Before ordering, check the product’s actual fiber composition and its care directions—not just the fabric name in the marketing copy or the photos. Look for fiber names and percentages, then check washing, drying, ironing, bleaching, and any professional-cleaning instructions. If a detail that matters to you is missing or unclear, ask the seller before buying rather than guessing from appearance.
A useful pre-purchase check answers two separate questions: what does the listing say the garment is made from, and what routine does it require? Neither answer can reliably be supplied by a product photograph. Spend a moment checking both, then decide whether the information is complete enough for you to place the order.
Start with the product details, not the product name
Open the listing’s materials, product details, specifications, or care section. Retailers use different labels for these areas, and information can be split across multiple tabs or expandable panels. Search the whole listing for both composition and care instructions; finding one does not mean the other is present.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA style name, a phrase such as “soft-touch,” or a broad marketing description is not the same as a composition statement. Look for the names of the fibers and, ideally, their percentages. A clear composition makes it possible to compare two listings on the same basis. A photo, color, texture description, or garment name cannot establish the fiber content.

- Check the full product description and any dedicated materials or care panels.
- Look for specific fiber names and percentages, rather than a general claim about how the garment looks or feels.
- Check whether the care directions appear separately from the material description.
- Note any information the listing leaves unclear before you decide whether to order.
If you are using a retailer’s search or filter tools, treat them as a way to narrow the options, not as a substitute for reading the individual product page. A filter or category label may help you find candidates, but the listing is where you should verify the stated composition and care details. If a page has several color or size variations, check the details shown for the exact item you intend to buy rather than assuming every variation has identical information.
It can help to make a short note while comparing items: composition, care method, drying restrictions, and anything not stated. This keeps a prominent phrase in the product title from overshadowing the more specific details—or the gaps—in the rest of the listing.
Read the fiber composition carefully
Record each stated fiber and percentage. If the listing gives only a broad material phrase, does not provide percentages, or uses language that is difficult to interpret, treat the composition as incomplete for your comparison. Do not infer a blend or a fiber’s share from a product name or photograph.

The FTC’s Textile Fiber Rule describes fiber statements using generic fiber names and percentages by weight. Under FTC cotton-labeling guidance, fibers that make up at least 5% of the product’s weight are listed in order of predominance. These are US requirements for covered products, not a universal rule for every garment or market.
In practical terms, a composition statement gives you more to evaluate than a promotional phrase. “Cotton blend,” for example, does not tell you the percentages or identify every fiber in the blend. A phrase such as “linen look” describes an appearance, not necessarily the fiber content. Look for the actual fiber names and the stated shares, and treat marketing language as supplementary rather than as a replacement for those details.
Do not assume that percentages are percentages of the garment’s price, surface area, or number of panels: the FTC describes covered fiber statements by weight. When a listing provides figures, compare them as stated and avoid trying to calculate missing values yourself. If the figures appear incomplete, inconsistent, or unclear, ask the seller what the composition statement means before relying on it.
EU textile-composition guidance calls for composition to be shown in decreasing percentage order and clearly separated from other information, such as care instructions. That is EU-specific guidance; do not assume the same presentation or disclosure rules apply in every country.

When comparing listings, check whether both provide enough detail to understand their compositions. If one gives fiber names and percentages and the other offers only a broad description, you have less information for the second garment. That is a reason to ask for clarification, not a reason to guess what the missing figures might be.

In the United States, origin and responsible-business information are also practical parts of the check. The FTC says most covered textile and wool products must identify country of origin and the manufacturer or another responsible business, alongside fiber content. That description is limited to covered US products. Elsewhere, look at origin or seller information if it helps you assess a listing, but do not assume the same disclosure requirements apply in every market.
Find and interpret the care directions
Look for the care information independently of the composition. Read the complete set of directions, including any restrictions or warnings. Where stated, check:
- Washing: whether the garment is machine-washable, requires hand washing, or calls for professional cleaning; note a stated water temperature or other washing condition.
- Drying: whether the directions permit a dryer or specify another method or restriction.
- Ironing: whether ironing is allowed and whether a temperature or other limit is given.
- Bleaching: whether the instructions allow or prohibit it, or give a condition.
- Warnings: any instruction about a procedure that could harm the garment.
Do not treat “machine washable” as a complete care plan if the listing also gives limits on temperature, drying, or ironing. Likewise, do not assume that a garment can be washed at home simply because the listing does not mention professional cleaning. When the directions are absent or ambiguous, ask the seller rather than filling in the gap yourself.
To answer “How do I know whether clothes are machine washable?”, look for an explicit statement in the care directions. If machine washing is permitted, read the rest of the instructions for a temperature, conditions, or restrictions, and check the separate directions for drying, ironing, and bleaching. A broad fabric name or a photograph cannot confirm that the garment is machine washable. If the product page does not say, the safest pre-purchase conclusion is that you do not yet have enough information to know.
Care directions need to be read as a set. A listing may state a washing method but leave drying or ironing limits in another section. It may also include a warning about a procedure that could damage the garment. Do not stop at the first care phrase you find: scan for all the listed instructions, and record a missing step as “not stated” rather than assuming there is no restriction.
In the United States, the FTC Care Labeling Rule requires covered manufacturers and importers to provide regular care instructions for ordinary use and enjoyment and to disclose those instructions before sale. The rule also requires a reasonable basis for the instructions and warnings about procedures that could reasonably be expected to harm the garment. The FTC states that failing to disclose necessary regular-care instructions before sale is an unfair or deceptive act or practice for covered products. This US rule should not be read as a statement of care-label law worldwide.
The FTC’s Care Labeling Rule, 16 CFR Part 423, describes the pre-sale obligation this way: “To fail to disclose to a purchaser, prior to sale, instructions which prescribe a regular care procedure necessary for the ordinary use and enjoyment of the product” is an unfair or deceptive act or practice for covered products. For shoppers, the practical point is to look for the directions before checkout, not to assume they will be easy to discover only after the garment arrives. FTC consumer guidance says covered care information should be available before sale; where necessary, a shopper can also check for a visible hang tag or package information.
Decide whether the care routine fits your life
A garment can be a good choice even if it needs special care, but the time, access, and effort involved belong in the purchase decision. Compare the written directions with what you can realistically do, rather than assuming you will change your routine after the item arrives.

- Identify the routine the directions require. Note whether they call for machine washing, hand washing, professional cleaning, or a particular drying or ironing method.
- Check the details that affect your routine. A temperature limit, a drying restriction, or a warning may matter as much as the headline washing method.
- Consider your actual household setup. Ask whether you have the time, equipment, or access needed to follow the stated directions when the garment needs care.
- Decide before ordering. If a required step is impractical, treat that as a real drawback. If you are willing and able to follow it, the extra care may be acceptable to you.
There is no single “easy-care” standard in the information provided by a product page. Make the decision from the garment’s own instructions and your own routine. A missing instruction cannot be treated as permission to use the easiest method.
Try making the decision concrete. If you prefer to put everyday clothes through a machine wash, note whether the listing explicitly permits that. If it requires hand washing or professional cleaning, decide whether you are prepared to make that part of caring for the item. If the washing method seems manageable but the drying or ironing instructions do not, include those steps in your assessment too. This is not a judgment about which care routine is best; it is a way to avoid buying on an assumption that the garment will fit habits you do not actually have.
If you are choosing an item for frequent use, consider how often you expect to need to follow the directions as part of your own routine. The listing cannot tell you what level of effort is worthwhile for your household, and there is no universal threshold for “too much care.” Decide based on the stated instructions and the time, access, or equipment you can reasonably provide. If a key instruction is missing, resolve that uncertainty first rather than deciding that it will probably be simple.

When choosing between products, use the same questions for each listing. This prevents a polished description on one page from obscuring that it provides less practical information than another.
| What to compare | What to record | What the comparison tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Fiber composition | Fiber names and stated percentages; note if percentages are absent. | Whether each listing gives enough detail to compare the stated materials without guessing. |
| Washing | Machine wash, hand wash, professional cleaning, and any stated temperature or condition. | Which routine each garment calls for and whether it fits your habits. |
| Drying and ironing | Any stated methods, limits, or restrictions. | Whether the care routine includes steps beyond washing that affect your decision. |
| Bleaching and warnings | Any permissions, prohibitions, or warnings about procedures that could harm the garment. | Whether the directions identify limits you would need to follow. |
| Origin and responsible business | Country-of-origin and manufacturer or responsible-business information, where relevant. | Whether the listing supplies information useful for your assessment and, for covered US products, the disclosures described by the FTC. |
| Completeness | Whether composition and care details are available and understandable before purchase. | Whether you can make an informed decision now or need to ask the seller first. |
Keep the comparison factual. If one page does not state a percentage, care method, or origin detail, record it as not stated rather than assuming it matches the other garment. Origin and seller or manufacturer identity can be useful checks, but legal disclosure obligations vary by market and product.
For a quick side-by-side check, write down the details in the same order for both items: fiber names and percentages; washing method and any stated temperature; drying; ironing; bleaching; warnings; and what is missing. Then compare the care routine with your own habits. This makes it easier to distinguish a garment that is less suitable for you from a listing that simply gives you less information. Those are different issues: one is a choice about the garment’s stated requirements, the other is an unanswered question about what the requirements are.
Do not let a more detailed page automatically decide the purchase for you, either. Clearer information helps you assess the garment, but the actual composition and care routine still need to suit your preferences. Conversely, a short description is not proof that the garment has a particular composition or needs a particular method of care. Keep “what the listing says” separate from “what I would need to know to choose.”

“Could you confirm the garment’s fiber composition and percentages, and share the full care instructions, including washing, drying, ironing, and any warnings? I cannot find those details on the product page.”
If country of origin or the responsible business is relevant to your decision, ask about that specifically as well. Keep the answer with the listing information so you can refer to it when the order arrives.
- If the seller supplies a clear answer, compare it with the product’s other details and decide whether the garment suits your routine.
- If the reply is vague, does not address the missing point, or conflicts with the page, do not treat the uncertainty as resolved.
- If no answer arrives and the unknown detail matters to you, consider waiting or choosing a listing with information you can assess.
This is practical consumer advice, not a guarantee that every online listing is complete or that a seller will respond. Do not rely on product photographs, broad marketing language, or a fabric’s apparent texture to verify a composition or washability claim.
Make the question specific enough that the seller can answer the point you need. If the page gives a material phrase but no percentages, ask for the fiber names and percentages. If the material is clear but the care section is missing, ask for the full care directions rather than only asking whether the item is “easy to care for.” If one detail matters most to your decision, put that question plainly instead of relying on a general request for more information.
Before placing an order, check whether the seller’s answer actually resolves the uncertainty. A reply that repeats the marketing description does not supply a missing composition statement. A statement about washing alone does not answer questions about drying, ironing, bleaching, or warnings. If the response conflicts with the listing, do not decide that one version must be correct; ask for clarification or choose not to rely on the uncertain information.
Where care information is not visible in the main product description, look through the listing’s other details and any visible tag or package information shown to shoppers. In the United States, covered care information is required to be disclosed before sale, but the shopper’s practical next step remains to ask for the missing details rather than assume that an incomplete-looking page tells the whole story. Disclosure rules are market-specific, and this checklist does not promise that every page will be complete or that every seller will reply.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the physical label after delivery
Once the garment arrives, compare its physical label with the product page and any answer the seller provided. Follow the garment’s care directions. If the label and listing differ, or the label does not resolve an important uncertainty, contact the seller before using a care method you are unsure about. The pre-purchase check helps you decide with the information available online; the physical label is the next information to consult once you have the item.
Keep the product page or seller’s written answer available until you have checked the item. Compare the details rather than relying on memory: are the stated fibers and percentages consistent, and do the physical care directions answer the questions you had before ordering? If anything is different or still unclear, pause before washing or treating the garment in a way you cannot verify from its directions.

Why care details are worth checking before checkout
Care is not a minor detail for many shoppers: GINETEX reported that 82% of consumers across seven surveyed countries considered care instructions an important criterion on labels in its 2025 survey. That figure describes the survey’s respondents across those seven countries; it is not a global estimate. For an individual purchase, the useful question is whether the stated routine works for you.
The figure is a reminder that care is part of how shoppers assess a garment, not an afterthought to consider only once it needs cleaning. It does not establish that every buyer has the same priorities or that any one care method is preferable. Use it as context, then base your decision on the directions for the item you are considering and the routine you are willing and able to follow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I find clothing care instructions when shopping online?
Start with the product details, materials, specifications, and care sections; retailers may place information in separate tabs or expandable panels. Read beyond the first description and check for washing, drying, ironing, bleaching, and warnings. If care directions are not visible or are unclear, ask the seller before ordering. For covered products in the United States, the FTC Care Labeling Rule requires care information to be disclosed before sale.
Recommended Free Tools
How do I know whether clothes are machine washable?
Look for an explicit machine-washing direction on the product page or other care information available before purchase. Read any stated temperature or conditions and check the separate instructions for drying, ironing, bleaching, and warnings. Do not infer washability from a fiber name, garment title, or photo; if the listing does not say, ask the seller.
Is a material phrase such as “cotton blend” enough to compare two products?
It may not give you enough detail. Look for the generic fiber names and stated percentages so you can see what composition the listing actually reports. A broad phrase or a style description is not a substitute for checking composition, and you should not guess missing percentages from appearance or product names.
What should I compare when choosing between two garments?
Use the same checklist for both: fiber names and percentages; washing method and any stated temperature or condition; drying and ironing limits; bleaching directions and warnings; relevant origin or responsible-business information; and whether the details are complete and understandable. Record missing information as not stated, then decide whether to ask the seller before choosing.
What should I do if the product page does not give the fiber percentages or care instructions?
Ask the seller for the specific missing information before placing the order. Request fiber names and percentages or the complete care directions, including washing, drying, ironing, and any warnings. If the response is vague, conflicts with the page, or does not arrive and the detail matters to you, wait or choose a listing you can assess.
Do US and EU clothing-label rules apply everywhere?
No. The FTC describes US requirements for covered textile and wool products, including fiber content, origin, responsible-business identity, and pre-sale care information for covered products. EU guidance calls for textile composition in decreasing percentage order and separated from other information such as care. These are examples for their respective markets, not a worldwide summary.
Should I check the garment label after it arrives?
Yes. Compare the physical label with the product page and any answer the seller gave you, then follow the garment’s care directions. If information differs or remains unclear, contact the seller before using a care method you are unsure about.
The Bottom Line
Before checkout, verify the stated fiber names and percentages, read the complete care directions, and decide whether the routine fits your life. Treat missing details as unanswered—not as permission to guess from a photo or marketing phrase. Ask the seller when a detail could change your decision, and check the physical label against the listing after delivery.
