You can validate a crypto address locally in Java by decoding it with the rules for its specific chain and address format, then checking its checksum and network context. That confirms the string is structurally plausible; it does not prove who controls the address or whether it can spend funds.
What offline address validation can—and cannot—tell you
A wallet address is not a universal format. Bitcoin supports several formats, and Ethereum uses a different hexadecimal representation. A regex or a matching prefix is not enough: a useful validator must parse the address and check the rules that apply to its format.
A successful check establishes that the input satisfies encoding, checksum, payload, and network rules that your implementation verifies. It does not identify the intended recipient, prove ownership of the corresponding private key, or guarantee that a transaction will be accepted. Those limits follow from what address-encoding procedures validate, rather than from a blockchain lookup. See the Bitcoin address conversion reference and BIP-173.
Choose the chain and network before parsing
For transfers, require the caller to select the intended chain and network, or apply an explicit policy describing which combinations you accept. Do not infer a network solely from a text prefix: the same broad shape can occur across networks, and a format check without network context can accept an address intended for somewhere else.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
After selection, apply a chain-specific decoder. Reject whitespace or unsupported characters according to a documented input policy, and check decoded payload size and format constraints as well as the checksum. Return a result with explicit fields—such as validForFormat, chain, network, addressType, and warnings—instead of a bare “valid” that could be mistaken for recipient verification.
Validate Bitcoin legacy addresses with Base58Check
Legacy Bitcoin P2PKH and P2SH addresses use Base58Check. To validate one locally, decode Base58, separate the version and payload from the trailing checksum, calculate SHA-256 twice over the version plus payload, and compare the first four bytes of that digest with the supplied checksum. Then verify the payload length, address type, and network version. The Bitcoin Developer Reference lists these version bytes:

When converting decoded Base58 values to byte arrays, preserve leading zero bytes. Dropping them can turn a valid encoded value into an incorrect byte sequence and cause parsing or checksum checks to fail.

bitcoinj documents parsing an address with new Address(params, input). Its Java guide says the constructor throws for an unparseable string or an address for the wrong network. Supply the intended NetworkParameters; do not guess the network from the input alone. This describes bitcoinj’s documented parser behavior, not universal support for every chain or Bitcoin address format. Check the library’s current release, maintenance, and format coverage before adopting it. See the bitcoinj Java guide.

Validate Bitcoin SegWit addresses with Bech32 or Bech32m
A Base58Check-only validator misses SegWit addresses. SegWit uses Bech32 rules for some witness versions and Bech32m for newer ones; use the checksum variant required for the witness version. Also validate the human-readable prefix, case rules, witness version, and witness-program length. The relevant specifications are BIP-173 and BIP-350.
Bitcoin’s SegWit human-readable prefix is bc, as noted in the ERC-2304 encoding overview. Prefer a maintained implementation whose supported witness versions and test vectors match the relevant BIPs over a partial, hand-written checksum check. Be careful when converting a decoded witness address into a script: an incorrect conversion can create an unspendable or insecure output.

Validate Ethereum addresses and EIP-55 checksums
An Ethereum address represents 20 bytes, usually written as 0x followed by 40 hexadecimal characters. EIP-55 adds a mixed-case checksum: calculate Keccak-256 over the lowercase hexadecimal address text, then use each corresponding hash nibble to determine whether each alphabetic address character should be uppercase or lowercase. The algorithm is specified in EIP-55.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a mixed-case input, recompute the checksum and compare its casing; reject it if the checksum does not match. Decide explicitly how your application treats all-lowercase and all-uppercase inputs: these can be accepted as valid but unchecked forms, with a warning, while a mixed-case checksum failure should be rejected. ERC-2304 recommends warning users about unchecksummed forms and requires rejection of mixed-case inputs with an invalid checksum. Do not use standardized SHA3-256 in place of Ethereum’s Keccak-256.

EIP-55 estimates that a mistyped randomly generated address has a 0.0247% chance of accidentally passing the mixed-case check. This is the proposal’s estimate, published in 2016—not a measurement of real-world wallet errors.
Build and test a useful validation result
A practical offline flow makes the limits of each check visible to callers:
- Require an explicit chain and network, or a documented supported-format policy.
- Apply a consistent input policy for whitespace and unexpected characters, then parse with the chain- and format-specific decoder.
- Check decoded payload size and format constraints.
- Verify the format’s checksum and the selected network’s version or human-readable prefix.
- Return structured format, chain, network, and address-type results, along with warnings for accepted but unchecked forms.
- Test valid and invalid reference vectors, checksum mutations, wrong prefixes, malformed lengths, mixed-case checksum failures, and network mismatches.
EIP-55 includes examples of lowercase, uppercase, and mixed-case inputs. BIP-173 and BIP-350 provide the relevant Bitcoin SegWit specifications and vectors; bitcoinj’s guide documents its parser’s network-aware behavior. A test suite should exercise the formats your application actually accepts rather than assuming one parser covers them all.
Choose Java support by format, not by a “crypto address” label
There is no established cross-chain Java package in the cited materials that covers every format in this guide. bitcoinj is a documented option for Java Bitcoin parsing with network context, but its documented behavior should not be treated as proof that it supports all current Bitcoin formats or Ethereum. Evaluate candidate implementations against the formats and versions you need, including:
