The right way to check a portable Bose speaker’s battery depends on its exact SoundLink model and generation. Some models announce charge level with a voice prompt; others use button actions and model-specific light colors. First identify your speaker, then use the matching instructions below. A light’s meaning can also change when the speaker is charging, so do not rely on one universal Bose battery chart.

Identify your speaker before checking its battery

Find the complete model name and generation in the product documentation or on the speaker’s product information. This matters because button behavior and indicator colors differ between models. For example, the SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen) can announce the battery level, the original SoundLink Micro checks charge with a brief Power-button hold, and the SoundLink Revolve uses green, amber, and red battery indications.

Take care to distinguish a first-generation product from a second-generation one. A similar name or appearance does not mean the battery controls, light chart, charging requirements, or care advice are identical. In particular, the Power-button instruction for the original SoundLink Micro should not be assumed to apply to the Micro (2nd Gen) or another SoundLink speaker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once you know the model, check its Bose owner’s guide or model-specific support information for the battery and charging indicators. Also note whether the speaker is on battery power, plugged in and charging, or being queried for its remaining charge. Those are distinct states: a light that signals low battery during a battery check may have a different meaning while the speaker is connected to power.

If you are looking at the speaker while it is plugged in, first establish whether the indicator is reporting charging progress or remaining battery. If it is not clear, consult the guide for the exact model rather than comparing the light with a chart for another SoundLink product. This simple distinction helps avoid treating a normal charging indication as a low-charge warning—or a battery-check color as a charging status.

Check battery level by model

Model How to check the remaining charge Relevant indicator meanings
SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen) A voice prompt announces the battery level each time the speaker powers on. While it is on, press and hold Power until you hear a voice prompt to hear the level. A voice prompt also announces when the speaker needs charging. Solid white: full charge. Solid amber: low charge. Blinking amber: charging is needed. Slowly pulsing white: charging. Repeated white blinks: software update. Alternating white and amber blinks: error. Repeated three amber blinks: failed battery.
Original SoundLink Micro Briefly press and hold Power to check the battery charge. Bose says this check does not turn the speaker on or off. Use the original Micro’s own indicator information; do not apply the Flex or Revolve color chart.
SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen) Use the battery-check instructions for the second-generation model in its Bose documentation. A repeated three-amber-blink pattern indicates a failed battery; Bose recommends contacting customer service for this condition.
SoundLink Revolve Use the model’s battery-check information to read the remaining-charge indicator. While checking charge, green means medium-to-full, amber means low-to-medium, and red means low battery/charge needed. While charging, flashing amber means charging and green means complete.

The table is deliberately model-specific. Bose’s support information does not establish one set of button actions or light colors for every portable Bluetooth speaker it makes. If your speaker is a different model or generation, follow that model’s own instructions rather than inferring its status from a similar-looking speaker.

These examples also illustrate why battery indications are not necessarily percentages. The Revolve’s colors describe ranges—medium-to-full, low-to-medium, or low—rather than an exact numerical charge. The Flex voice prompt provides an audible battery-level update, but its instructions should be followed as written rather than translated into a percentage that the guide does not specify.

SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen): use the voice prompt and power light

The Flex (2nd Gen) announces its battery level when it powers on. If it is already running, press and hold the Power button until you hear the prompt. The power light provides a separate visual indication, with the meanings shown in the table. Interpret blinking patterns carefully: repeated white blinks indicate a software update, not an ordinary battery reading, while alternating white and amber blinks indicate an error.

Solid and blinking appearances matter. On this model, solid white means full charge, solid amber means low charge, blinking amber means charging is needed, and slowly pulsing white means the speaker is charging. Do not collapse those patterns into a simple rule such as “white is on” or “amber means charging”: the specific pattern and whether the speaker is plugged in both matter.

If the Flex battery is completely depleted to 0%, Bose says the speaker enters battery protection mode. Reconnect it to power, then press Power to reactivate it. A repeated pattern of three amber blinks is a failed-battery indication; Bose directs owners with that pattern to customer service rather than to a do-it-yourself battery repair.

Original SoundLink Micro: check without changing power

On the original SoundLink Micro, holding Power—even briefly—checks the charge and does not switch the product on or off. Do not assume that this control works the same way on a later Micro generation or another SoundLink model. For the Micro (2nd Gen), use its own instructions; Bose identifies three repeated amber blinks as a failed-battery state and recommends customer service.

If the original Micro is not charging as expected, Bose’s troubleshooting guidance calls for checking the charger’s current rating against the product specifications, as well as checking the cable and power source. A charger with too little current may charge slowly or not at all. The appropriate charger and cable depend on the speaker, so this is a reason to check that model’s specifications—not to choose a rating based on another Bose product.

SoundLink Revolve: distinguish charge from charging

On the Revolve, the battery-check colors indicate ranges rather than a precise percentage: green is medium-to-full charge, amber is low-to-medium, and red means low battery or that charging is needed. During charging, flashing amber means the speaker is charging and green means charging is complete. Check which state the speaker is in before interpreting the light.

In particular, amber has different descriptions in these two contexts: it marks a low-to-medium remaining level when checking the battery, but flashing amber indicates charging when the speaker is connected to power. Green likewise describes medium-to-full remaining charge in a check and a completed charge in the charging chart. Use the context and the exact light behavior together.

Charge safely and interpret the lights in context

Use the charger, cable, and charging instructions specified for your speaker. A charger’s current rating and the speaker’s requirements are not interchangeable across every Bose model. Bose’s original SoundLink Micro troubleshooting guidance advises comparing the charger’s current rating with the product specifications, checking the outlet and cable, and using a power supply approved by a safety agency and compliant with local requirements. An undersized charger may charge slowly or may not charge the speaker at all.

If charging appears unusually slow, first check whether you are reading a charging indicator rather than a battery-check indicator. Then confirm that the cable and power supply meet the specifications for your exact model, inspect the outlet and connections, and—where relevant—try another suitable cable or charger. Do not select a replacement based only on another speaker’s charging setup or a generic wattage recommendation.

For the SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen), Bose’s 2025 owner’s guide gives a specific charging benchmark: up to four hours to charge from 0% to 100% while the speaker is in standby, using a 5 V/1.5 A (7.5 W) USB-A power supply. Bose says charging time varies when that recommended supply is not used. This is a manufacturer figure for that model and those conditions, not a charging-time promise for the whole Bose range.

The conditions are important: the stated Flex charging time starts at 0%, ends at 100%, uses standby, and assumes that specified power supply. A different starting charge, a different supply, or another model is outside that exact benchmark. Treat “up to four hours” as the guide’s test-based reference, not a guarantee that every charging session will take the same amount of time.

When troubleshooting, record the charger’s current rating and compare it with the speaker’s own specifications. Check that the outlet works and that the cable and its connections are in good condition. For the original Micro, Bose says another USB cable or charger may be worth trying when relevant, but any replacement must still meet the model’s specifications and local safety requirements. Avoid assuming that a charger’s connector fitting the speaker proves it is the right supply.

Care for the battery between charges

Store it according to the model’s guidance

Bose’s SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) owner’s guide says, “When not in use, store the speaker in a cool place.” It also cautions against extended storage when the speaker is fully charged or has less than 10% charge remaining. Those instructions are specific to the Flex (2nd Gen); consult the guide for another model rather than treating them as a universal storage rule.

The warning covers both ends of the range named by Bose: do not leave this model stored for extended periods at full charge, and do not leave it stored for extended periods below 10%. The guide does not establish a universal ideal storage percentage or a storage interval for every portable Bose speaker, so do not substitute a made-up target. If you own another model, use its own owner’s guide for storage instructions.

Let a wet or temperature-stressed speaker recover before charging

For the SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen), Bose says not to charge the speaker while it is wet. After exposure to liquid, let it dry thoroughly before connecting it to power. If it has been exposed to extreme heat or cold, wait until it reaches room temperature before charging. These are precautions for the cited Micro generation; check your model’s own guidance if it has different water-resistance or operating instructions.

In practice, do not treat a wet charging port or a speaker that still feels temperature-stressed as ready to charge simply because a cable can be connected. The applicable instruction is to wait until it is thoroughly dry after liquid exposure, or until it has returned to room temperature after extreme heat or cold. The cited advice does not replace model-specific guidance for other products.

Use it in a way that fits your runtime needs

Battery runtime is not a fixed number. For the SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen), Bose’s 2025 owner’s guide lists up to 12 hours of playback in a manufacturer test using Bluetooth A2DP, 50% volume, default EQ, and a specified music mix. A separate test at 100% volume and default EQ yielded up to three hours. Bose’s tests used production-representative speakers at 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C), and the guide notes that performance varies with content, loudness, environmental temperature, and user conditions. These figures describe the Flex (2nd Gen) under specified tests; they are not a guarantee for an individual speaker or a runtime estimate for other Bose models.

The 12-hour figure is an “up to” test result, not a promised minimum. It was measured at 50% volume with Bluetooth A2DP and default EQ; Bose also specifies a music mix and a test temperature range of 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C). The three-hour result is likewise an “up to” figure, measured with Bluetooth A2DP at 100% volume and default EQ. The two results should not be treated as interchangeable estimates for every playlist, temperature, or listening level.

For a practical comparison, the guide’s two playback figures show why a quoted maximum runtime may not match listening at high volume: the test conditions differ, especially in volume. If you need the speaker to last longer between charges, reducing volume is a reasonable way to reduce one of the factors Bose identifies as affecting runtime. The guide does not quantify the improvement for a particular listening session.

Music content, loudness, environmental temperature, and user conditions all affect actual performance according to Bose. If a speaker plays for less time than an advertised maximum, compare your use with the manufacturer’s test conditions before concluding that the battery is faulty. Those conditions give context, but they cannot predict the exact runtime of an individual listening session.

Troubleshoot a battery reading or charging problem

The battery level seems inaccurate

  1. Confirm the speaker’s exact model and generation, then use its own battery-check method and indicator chart.
  2. Identify whether the speaker is plugged in, actively charging, or showing its remaining battery level. Do not interpret a charging light using a battery-check chart.
  3. If you have a SoundLink Revolve+ II that has been unused for a period, Bose notes that its battery light may not accurately show the remaining charge. Bose’s troubleshooting guidance is to use the speaker until the low-battery light appears, then recharge it fully to address the inaccurate indication.

The Revolve+ II guidance is specific to that model and situation. Do not apply its recalibration-like procedure to another speaker unless that model’s instructions say to do so.

If the displayed or announced level seems inconsistent, start by ruling out a model mismatch or a charging-versus-battery-check mismatch. For the Flex (2nd Gen), the startup prompt, press-and-hold prompt, and power-light chart are separate ways to get information; for the Revolve, the light chart depends on whether you are checking charge or charging. Only use the Revolve+ II procedure when the speaker is that model and has been unused for a period, as Bose describes.

The speaker will not charge, or charging is very slow

  1. For the original SoundLink Micro, compare the charger’s current rating with the speaker’s specifications. A supply that is undersized may charge slowly or fail to charge it.
  2. Check the power outlet and the USB cable. If appropriate for the model, try a different cable or charger that meets its specifications and local safety requirements.
  3. If the speaker has been wet or exposed to extreme temperatures, do not connect it until it is thoroughly dry or has returned to room temperature, as applicable to the SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen).
  4. For a Flex (2nd Gen) that has reached 0%, reconnect it to power and press Power to reactivate it from battery protection mode.

Do not treat any one charger rating or cable type as suitable for all Bose portable speakers. The cited 5 V/1.5 A supply is the Flex (2nd Gen) owner’s-guide condition for its stated charging time; it is not a universal charging specification.

Work through the checks in order: confirm the speaker’s power source, verify the outlet, check the cable and connections, then compare the charger rating with the exact model’s requirements. If trying another cable or charger, choose one that is appropriate for the model and meets applicable safety requirements. A replacement that works with a different SoundLink speaker is not automatically suitable for yours.

A failed-battery pattern appears

If a SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) or SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen) shows the repeated three-amber-blink failed-battery pattern, Bose recommends contacting customer service. Do not disassemble the speaker or rely on an unverified third-party battery replacement based on that indicator.

  • Lebakort Hard Case Compatible with Bose New SoundLink Flex 2nd Gen/Bose SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker

For the Flex (2nd Gen), alternating white and amber blinks are an error pattern, while repeated three amber blinks identify a failed battery. Repeated white blinks instead indicate a software update. These are distinct patterns, so describe exactly what the light does if you contact support. Bose directs owners with the error or failed-battery patterns to customer service; avoid attempting an undocumented reset or repair.

Quick checks before you contact support

  • Write down the exact speaker name and generation.
  • Note whether it was on battery power or connected to a charger when the light appeared.
  • Describe the indicator precisely, including whether it was solid, pulsing, or blinking and whether a pattern repeated.
  • For charging symptoms, note the charger rating and check it against the model’s specifications; also check the outlet and cable.
  • If the model-specific guide identifies the pattern as a failed battery or error, follow Bose’s support direction instead of trying an undocumented reset or repair.

If you are considering an accessory, verify compatibility with the exact model before buying. Bose’s Revolve product support page lists power supplies and a charging cradle among model accessories, but compatibility and availability should be checked for the particular speaker. A USB cable may be relevant when troubleshooting, but its fit and specifications must match the model. A new SoundLink speaker is not needed to check the battery on one you already own.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check the battery on a Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen)?

The Flex (2nd Gen) announces its battery level whenever it powers on. While it is running, press and hold Power until you hear the voice prompt. Its power light also reports status: solid white means full, solid amber means low, blinking amber means charging is needed, and slowly pulsing white means charging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does holding Power check the battery on every Bose SoundLink speaker?

No. Bose gives that brief press-and-hold battery-check instruction for the original SoundLink Micro, where it does not turn the speaker on or off. Use the instructions for your exact model and generation; do not assume the control is universal.

What do the Bose SoundLink Revolve battery light colors mean?

When checking remaining charge, green means medium-to-full, amber means low-to-medium, and red means low battery or charging is needed. During charging, flashing amber means charging and green means the charge is complete. Context matters because the same color can mean something different in the two states.

How long does a SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) take to charge, and how long does its battery last?

Bose’s 2025 owner’s guide says charging from 0% to 100% takes up to four hours in standby with a 5 V/1.5 A (7.5 W) USB-A supply. It lists up to 12 hours of playback at 50% volume and up to three hours at maximum volume in specified tests. Actual charging time and runtime vary with conditions; these figures are not guarantees or specifications for other Bose models.

Can I charge a Bose speaker when it is wet or very hot or cold?

For the SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen), Bose says not to charge while wet: let it dry thoroughly after liquid exposure. If it has been exposed to extreme heat or cold, wait until it reaches room temperature before charging. Check the instructions for your own model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if my speaker’s battery light seems inaccurate after storage?

For a SoundLink Revolve+ II that has been unused for a period, Bose says the battery light may not accurately show the remaining charge. Its troubleshooting guidance is to use the speaker until the low-battery light appears, then recharge fully. Do not apply this procedure to other models unless their instructions say to.

What does three repeated amber blinks mean on a Flex (2nd Gen) or Micro (2nd Gen)?

Bose identifies the repeated three-amber-blink pattern as a failed battery on these cited models and recommends contacting customer service. Do not disassemble the speaker or attempt an unverified battery replacement.

The Bottom Line

Identify the exact SoundLink model and generation before interpreting a battery prompt or light. Check battery status and charging status against that model’s instructions, use only an appropriate charger, and follow model-specific storage and wet-speaker precautions. If Bose identifies a repeated failed-battery pattern, contact customer service rather than attempting a repair.
