Android updates help reduce mobile-banking risk by fixing software issues and improving device security features. They are an important layer of protection, not a guarantee: updates cannot stop every phishing attempt, scam call, stolen-password attack, malicious app, or account compromise. Check your phone’s patch status and your bank’s own device requirements rather than assuming every bank requires the newest Android version.
Why updates matter when you bank on Android
A phone’s operating system and security components are part of the environment in which a banking app runs. Google says ongoing Android updates provide fixes for possible issues and upgrade device safety features. Keeping an eligible phone updated can therefore reduce exposure to known software weaknesses, but it does not make banking risk-free. Google’s Android update guidance explains how to check and install updates.
Updates address only some risks. A current phone can still be exposed to phishing links, impersonation, social engineering, reused or stolen credentials, unsafe app installation, or a scammer persuading someone to transfer money. As Eugene Liderman, Google’s director of Android Security & Privacy, wrote in a May 12, 2026 Android security post: “Scammers are impersonating financial institutions to trick users into transferring money or revealing their account information.” Google’s Android security post discusses additional protections, but users still need to verify requests through trusted channels and protect their login details.
Check your Android version and patch dates
- Open the device information screen. Go to Settings → About phone or About tablet, then tap Android version. Record the Android version, Android security update date, and Google Play system update date. Menu wording may differ by manufacturer.
- Check for available updates. Go to Settings → System → Software updates, or use the update option shown on your device. Follow the on-screen steps if an update is available. Google says most system updates and security patches install automatically, but checking the status can reveal one that needs attention.
- Check support for your exact model. Update availability and timing vary by device, manufacturer, and carrier. Look up the manufacturer’s published support information for the precise handset, and contact the manufacturer or carrier if the schedule is unclear. A newer Android version on another model does not establish what your phone can receive.
Know which update you are looking at

Keep app and account safeguards in place
- Keep Google Play Protect enabled and install your banking app from the bank’s official Google Play listing. Google says Play Protect checks apps regardless of where they were downloaded. Its scanning is an additional app safeguard, not a substitute for system updates. Google Play Protect details.
- Avoid sideloading apps you do not trust, especially apps that request accessibility, screen-sharing, or device-administration permissions without a clear need.
- Do not follow banking links in unexpected texts, emails, or calls. Open the bank app directly or contact the bank using a number from its official website or your card.
- Use a unique password for online banking and protect the phone with a screen lock. Never disclose one-time codes or approve a transfer because a caller claims it is urgent.
Google reported that real-time scanning identified more than 27 million malicious apps from outside Google Play in 2025, and that it blocked 266 million risky installation attempts and addressed 872,000 unique high-risk applications. These are Google-reported figures, not independent counts of all Android malware or a measure of banking fraud; they illustrate why app screening matters alongside updates. Check your bank’s compatibility rules
There is no single Android minimum that applies to every bank. Banks set their own app and device requirements, which can change over time. Check the bank’s current mobile-banking support page or ask its support team about the minimum Android version, whether your exact device is eligible, and whether rooted or modified software is allowed.
For one dated U.S. example, Hilltop Bank’s March 2025 policy listed Android 11 as its minimum and said devices unable to upgrade to that stated minimum might be prevented from installing or using its mobile banking app. The same policy supported only an unmodified manufacturer operating system and excluded rooted devices. What to do if your phone no longer receives security updates
A phone that has stopped receiving patches is not automatically proof that your bank account has been compromised, but it leaves known and future software issues without the same ongoing device-level maintenance. Decide based on the exact phone and bank rather than relying on the Android version number alone.

- Confirm the latest security patch date in Settings and check the manufacturer’s update-support policy for your model.
- Check whether the bank still supports the Android version and device, and whether it requires an unmodified operating system.
- If the manufacturer no longer provides patches or the bank app is no longer supported, consider moving banking to a supported device. Before buying, verify the replacement model’s published security-update commitment and your bank’s compatibility requirements.
- If you cannot replace the phone immediately, keep available updates and Play Protect enabled, avoid installing apps outside trusted sources, and use the bank’s official support channel to ask what access options remain. Do not treat these precautions as a replacement for missing manufacturer patches.
