The reliable way to check an Android phone is to test its exact IMEI with the carrier you plan to use, then confirm the phone is unlocked and that its SIM or eSIM can be activated. An unlocked label alone does not prove compatibility: Verizon requires both an unlocked device and hardware and software that work with its network. T-Mobile likewise warns that non-T-Mobile phones can have different capabilities and features.

What carrier compatibility actually means

Compatibility is specific to a destination carrier. A phone can work on one U.S. network and be rejected, limited, or only partially supported on another. The carrier evaluates the device identity, network capabilities, software configuration, lock status, and activation method together.

There are three separate questions to answer:

  • Will the carrier accept this exact handset? The carrier’s IMEI or bring-your-own-device (BYOD) checker gives the most useful answer.
  • Is the handset unlocked? A carrier lock can prevent activation even when the hardware is technically capable.
  • Can you activate the needed service? Physical-SIM and eSIM support, voice and data features, and carrier-specific functions may differ from the phone’s original network.

A positive checker result is an eligibility signal, not a promise that every feature or performance characteristic will match a phone sold directly by that carrier. T-Mobile states that it cannot test non-T-Mobile devices’ call quality, performance, data speed, feature compatibility, or other functions, and that experiences can vary with settings from the original carrier.

Information to collect before checking

Exact model and variant

Record the manufacturer’s model number, not just the marketing name. A single Android family can have regional, storage, chipset, or carrier variants with different internal technology and software. Use the model information shown in Settings > About phone; also note the software version if the carrier asks for it.

IMEI and, when relevant, EID

The IMEI identifies the cellular device. Verizon’s guidance says Android users can find it in Settings > About Phone, and its checker also supports the dial code *#06#. Menu wording varies by manufacturer and Android version, so search Settings for “IMEI” if the listed path is different.

Many dual-SIM phones show more than one IMEI. Enter the IMEI for the SIM slot or eSIM profile you intend to use, following the carrier’s instructions. Do not confuse an IMEI with the serial number. For eSIM eligibility, T-Mobile may use the device’s EID, which is a separate identifier.

Original-carrier and account details

Identify the carrier that sold or financed the phone. You may need that carrier to confirm an unlock or remove a block. If the phone was reported lost, stolen, or associated with an unpaid obligation, a destination carrier can reject the IMEI even when the model otherwise supports its network.

Step-by-step: check an Android phone before switching

1. Find and copy the device identifiers

  1. Open Settings and choose About phone, About device, or the closest label provided by the manufacturer.
  2. Copy the IMEI exactly. If the phone has two IMEIs, keep both available and identify which one belongs to the intended SIM or eSIM line.
  3. If Settings does not show the number, open the Phone app and enter *#06#. Some devices display the IMEI in a pop-up instead of placing a call.
  4. For an eSIM check, locate the EID in the SIM or network information area if the carrier requests it.

Keep the number private. An IMEI is not a password, but publishing it unnecessarily can expose identifying information about your handset.

2. Open the destination carrier’s BYOD checker

Use the official compatibility or bring-your-own-device page for the carrier where you want service. Select the device-check option rather than relying on a generic “unlocked phone” statement from a retailer. Verizon’s checker requests a 15-digit IMEI. T-Mobile uses the IMEI to evaluate network capabilities and whether the device is unlocked.

  • Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
  • Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Enter the digits without transposing any characters. If the form rejects the number, verify that you entered an IMEI rather than a serial number, removed spaces if the form requires that, and selected the correct device type. A dual-SIM phone may require testing each IMEI separately.

3. Read the complete result, not only the headline

Save or screenshot the result, including any notes about limitations. T-Mobile identifies several possible outcomes, including full compatibility, partial compatibility, incompatible, blocked, unknown, and eSIM-related results. These labels have different consequences:

Result What it tells you What to do next
Full compatibility The submitted device identity meets the carrier’s stated compatibility checks. Confirm unlock status, choose the supported SIM or eSIM path, and follow activation instructions.
Partial compatibility Some network capabilities or features may work while others are limited. Decide whether the missing voice, data, roaming, messaging, or carrier features matter to you before switching.
Incompatible The carrier cannot support the submitted handset for service. Do not buy a plan for that phone until the carrier explains a correctable error; test another device or choose a different carrier.
Blocked The IMEI is associated with a block, such as a lost, stolen, or otherwise ineligible device. Contact the original carrier. A destination carrier generally cannot clear another carrier’s block for you.
Unknown or unable to determine The checker did not establish eligibility. Recheck the IMEI and exact model, then ask the destination carrier to review the device manually.
eSIM not supported or unavailable The phone or submitted identifier cannot use the carrier’s eSIM activation route. Ask whether a physical SIM is supported and use that route if available.

Do not interpret “full” as a guarantee of identical coverage, speed, call quality, or every carrier-branded feature. Those can depend on software, settings, location, congestion, and the device’s particular variant.

4. Confirm the phone is unlocked

Check the phone’s lock status separately when the result does not state it clearly. A phone can pass a hardware check and still refuse a SIM from another carrier. Contact the original carrier and ask whether the exact IMEI is unlocked and eligible for use elsewhere. If the phone is financed, has an unpaid balance, or has not met the original carrier’s unlock conditions, request the carrier’s specific remedy.

Do not rely only on a seller’s claim that the phone is “factory unlocked.” Verify the status with the carrier or with the phone’s SIM-status screen, because a device can be marketed as unlocked while a particular IMEI remains restricted.

5. Confirm the activation method

Basic network eligibility and activation method are separate checks. If you plan to use eSIM, verify that the exact handset supports the destination carrier’s eSIM process and provide the requested EID. If eSIM is unavailable, ask for a physical SIM and confirm that the phone has a compatible SIM tray.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a phone that supports two lines, ask which IMEI the carrier will provision and whether both lines can remain active. Do not erase an existing eSIM until you have the information needed to restore it or have completed the transfer.

6. Activate and test before discarding the old service

  1. Back up contacts, authentication apps, messages, and any eSIM information you may need.
  2. Install the destination carrier’s physical SIM or complete its eSIM download while connected to Wi-Fi if required.
  3. Restart the phone and wait for the carrier name or signal indicator to appear.
  4. Place a call, send an SMS, use mobile data with Wi-Fi disabled, and test any feature you consider essential.
  5. Keep the old line active until calls, texts, account access, and number transfer are confirmed.

If activation fails after a positive check, record the error message and the IMEI used. Support can use those details to distinguish a provisioning problem from a compatibility or lock problem.

Carrier-specific considerations

Verizon

Verizon’s BYOD checker accepts a 15-digit IMEI. Its Android instructions point to Settings > About Phone and also provide *#06# as an alternative way to display the number. Verizon’s BYOD requirement is explicit: the device must be unlocked, and its hardware and software must be compatible with Verizon’s mobile network.

Run the check for each IMEI shown on a dual-SIM phone if Verizon’s form asks for one specific identifier. If the result is not eligible, verify the model variant and ask the original carrier about an unlock or block before purchasing a Verizon line.

T-Mobile

T-Mobile’s IMEI process evaluates network capabilities and unlock status. Its result categories include full, partial, incompatible, blocked, and unknown outcomes, with separate guidance for eSIM. T-Mobile also cautions that performance and feature support for non-T-Mobile devices can vary because it cannot test every such handset under every original-carrier configuration.

When the IMEI check does not establish eSIM eligibility, ask about a physical SIM. If the phone is blocked or the result is unknown, confirm the number and exact model before requesting a manual review.

AT&T and dated compatibility lists

An AT&T supported-device PDF available in the materials for this guide states that it was last updated November 29, 2022. Treat that document as a historical model example, not as a definitive current approval list. Use AT&T’s current compatibility checker for the exact IMEI and model, and ask support to clarify any discrepancy between an older list and the current result.

How to compare two phones or two carriers

If you are deciding between an existing phone and a replacement, run the same checks for the destination carrier rather than comparing marketing names. Use this worksheet:

Troubleshooting a failed or confusing check

The checker says the IMEI is invalid

  • Re-enter all 15 digits and check for a missing or duplicated number.
  • Use the IMEI from About phone and compare it with the value shown by *#06#.
  • On a dual-SIM phone, try the other IMEI if the carrier asks for the active slot.
  • Confirm that you did not enter the serial number, EID, or an order number.

The checker says unknown

Unknown does not mean compatible or incompatible. It means the automated system did not establish an answer. Verify the exact model and software information, then contact the destination carrier with the IMEI and the displayed error. Ask whether the device can be reviewed manually.

The phone is compatible but activation fails

  • Ask the original carrier to confirm the unlock on the exact IMEI.
  • Check whether the destination carrier requires a particular SIM size, physical SIM, or eSIM profile.
  • Confirm that the line was provisioned for the intended IMEI, especially on a dual-SIM phone.
  • Restart the phone, install pending carrier or system updates, and retry activation on Wi-Fi if the carrier’s instructions require it.
  • Provide support with the checker result and the activation error instead of repeating the check with a different device description.

The result is partial

List the functions you actually use: calls, SMS, mobile data, hotspot, roaming, visual voicemail, Wi-Fi calling, or another carrier-specific service. Ask the carrier which of those are unsupported on the exact model. If an essential function is uncertain, do not cancel the old line until a live test succeeds.

The phone is blocked

Only the original carrier or the party that reported the device can usually resolve a block. A factory reset, software update, or new SIM will not change an IMEI block. If you bought the phone secondhand, return it through the seller’s process rather than paying for activation on another line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Checking only the word “unlocked.” Unlocking and network compatibility are separate requirements.
  • Checking a product name instead of an IMEI. Variant differences can change the result.
  • Using a stale PDF as final proof. The cited AT&T list carries a November 29, 2022 update date; current carrier tools take priority.
  • Assuming a positive result guarantees identical service. Non-carrier devices can have different software settings, feature support, and measured performance.
  • Ignoring eSIM or physical-SIM requirements. A phone may pass a network check but lack the activation method you need.
  • Canceling the old line too soon. Keep it until calls, messages, data, and number transfer work on the new line.
  • Publishing the IMEI publicly. Share it only with the carrier, seller, or support channel that needs it.

When replacing the phone is the sensible option

Consider another handset only after you have confirmed the exact IMEI, checked the destination carrier, verified unlock status, and resolved any SIM or eSIM question. Replacement is reasonable when the carrier confirms incompatibility, the device is permanently blocked, the original carrier will not unlock it, or a required feature is unavailable on a partial-compatibility result.

If you buy a replacement, require the seller to provide the exact model variant and a return option. Run the destination carrier’s checker with the replacement’s IMEI before moving your number or discarding the old SIM. No individual handset can be assumed eligible without that device-specific check.
