Use Android’s Privacy dashboard first: it shows which apps recently used sensitive permissions and when. Then review each app in Permission manager, run Google Play Protect, and read the app’s Google Play Data safety section before installing it. These checks can expose an app whose access does not match its purpose, but a clean history or scan is not a forensic guarantee that a phone contains no spyware.
Menu names differ by Android version and manufacturer. On many phones, you can find the relevant screens by opening Settings and searching for Privacy dashboard, Permission manager, or Play Protect.
What an Android spyware check can—and cannot—tell you
Spyware is software that abuses access to collect information, monitor activity, or control functions without a legitimate reason or the user’s meaningful consent. Android’s consumer controls are designed to help you inspect access and remove unwanted apps. They are not a laboratory examination of every process, file, or network connection on the device.
A permission by itself is not proof of spyware. A navigation app may need location, and a messaging app may need camera access to attach photos. Concern increases when the requested access has no clear connection to the app’s advertised function, is broader than necessary, is always-on without a reason, or is requested through pressure to change a sensitive setting.

- Useful evidence: recent permission-access history, the permissions currently granted, Play Protect warnings, update status, and the app’s stated data practices.
- Not a certification: none of these screens proves that an app or the entire phone is spyware-free.
- Context matters: evaluate the feature you are using, whether access is needed in the foreground or background, and whether a narrower option works.
Follow this checking workflow
1. Inspect recent access in Privacy dashboard
- Open Settings.
- Go to Security and privacy or Privacy, then open Privacy dashboard. If you cannot see it, use Settings search for “privacy dashboard.”
- Select a sensitive category such as Camera, Microphone, or Location.
- Review the apps listed and the recorded times. Ask whether each access matches something you intentionally did, such as taking a photograph, recording audio, or navigating.
- Open an unfamiliar app from the list to continue to its permission controls, if your phone offers that shortcut.
Google’s Android Help guidance says the dashboard shows the last seven days of activity on Android 13 and the last 24 hours on Android 12. The exact history window, categories, and navigation can vary by version and manufacturer, so an empty or short history is not evidence that no earlier access occurred.
2. Review permissions app by app or by category
For an individual app, use the common path Settings → Apps → [app name] → Permissions. You can also open Permission manager and choose a category such as location, camera, microphone, contacts, call logs, SMS, notifications, or files to see which apps have access.
For each permission, compare the grant with the app’s core function and the particular feature you use. On many devices, location, camera, and microphone controls may include choices such as Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, or Don’t allow. Choose the narrowest option that still supports the feature.
- Open the app’s permission page.
- Select a permission that does not appear necessary.
- Change it to a more limited choice or select Don’t allow.
- Use the app normally. If a feature fails, decide whether that feature is worth restoring the access.
- Repeat for other sensitive categories, especially permissions that allow background or broad access.
Revoking access can stop functions from working. That result is expected and is preferable to granting unnecessary access simply to avoid an error. You can restore a permission later if you confirm why the app needs it.

3. Review device-wide security and privacy controls
On Android 13 and newer, relevant controls may be grouped under Security and privacy. Android 12 and older may show Security and Privacy as separate sections. Open the area that contains your phone’s security overview and check:
- Any Google Play Protect warning or recommended action.
- Privacy permissions and recent access.
- Whether Android reports that a system update is available.
- Security recommendations or alerts shown by the device.
These labels are not identical across manufacturers. If a listed item is missing, search Settings for the specific term rather than assuming the control does not exist.
4. Run Google Play Protect
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Select Play Protect.
- Review the latest scan result and follow any warning or remediation prompt.
Google says Play Protect checks apps before they are downloaded from Google Play and periodically scans apps already on the device, including apps installed from other sources. Depending on the finding, it can warn you, deactivate an app, or remove a harmful app. Treat a clean result as one protective signal, not a promise that spyware is impossible. Play Protect may not identify every form of unwanted behavior, and a scan result does not replace reviewing permissions and app purpose.

- Open the app’s listing in Google Play.
- Scroll to Data safety.
- Open the details and read what the developer says about collection, sharing, and security practices.
- Compare those disclosures with the app’s purpose, the permissions it requests, and the feature you plan to use.
Data safety information applies to apps distributed through Google Play and is supplied by the developer. Google explains that it is different from the technical permissions list. A permission can be used locally without being described as data collected, and the disclosure can vary with how the app is used, the user’s region, and age. Therefore, Data safety is a useful disclosure to question and compare—not an independent audit.

6. Stop and verify requests for restricted settings
Some capabilities are more powerful than an ordinary camera or location grant. In particular, accessibility access can allow an app to read content on the screen and interact with other apps. There are legitimate accessibility tools, but an unrelated app that insists on this access deserves careful scrutiny.
Android may block or warn about restricted settings. Google’s guidance states: “We don’t recommend that you allow restricted settings unless you trust the app developer.” Do not enable the setting merely because an app says it is required. Verify the developer, the app’s stated purpose, and the exact feature that needs the access. If the request is unexpected, cancel it and investigate before proceeding.
7. Act when an app seems suspicious
- Return to Settings → Apps → [app name] → Permissions and revoke access that does not fit the app’s function.
- If you do not trust the app or do not recognize installing it, uninstall it from its app-information screen or the Play Store.
- Open Play Protect again and review any alert or recommended action.
- Install available Android and app updates through the normal system and Play Store update controls.
- Recheck Privacy dashboard activity after removal to see whether the app continues to appear; an entry may remain in the history for the period the dashboard retains.
If the phone belongs to an employer or school, an administrator may control app installation, permissions, security settings, or Play Protect behavior. In that case, contact the organization’s administrator before removing a managed app or changing a policy-controlled setting.

Use the following table as a question guide, not a spyware score. The same permission can be reasonable for one feature and excessive for another.

Google Play policy frames sensitive access around functionality expected by, or consented to by, the user. An app should limit access and use to what its feature requires. A request that conflicts with the app’s description, especially when paired with pressure or unexplained background use, is a reason to pause and verify rather than an automatic diagnosis.

Start with the feature, not the permission name
Ask what you were trying to do when the prompt appeared. A camera permission while scanning a document is easier to explain than the same prompt from a basic calculator. Location used while navigating is easier to justify than location requested continuously by an app with no location-based feature.
Prefer limited and visible access
Foreground-only access, “ask every time,” and one-time choices reduce exposure compared with an always-on grant when the feature does not require it. If the app works after you deny background access, keep the narrower setting.

Compare the app’s advertised purpose, its Android permission requests, and its Google Play Data safety disclosure. They will not be identical: Data safety is a developer disclosure, while permissions describe technical access. A mismatch is a prompt to investigate the developer and feature, not proof by itself.

Take pressure seriously
Urgent messages demanding accessibility access, notification access, or another restricted setting are stronger warning signs than an ordinary runtime permission prompt. Close the prompt, verify the app independently, and do not enable a powerful setting solely to continue.
A practical framework for comparing two apps
When two apps perform a similar job, compare them using the same questions rather than relying on a vague “safe” label.

This framework helps you choose the less intrusive option without pretending that any consumer screen is a certification.

When the menus or history do not match
- Different menu name: search Settings for “privacy,” “permissions,” “permission manager,” or the specific permission.
- No Privacy dashboard: the phone may use an older Android release, a manufacturer-specific interface, or a limited implementation. Review the app’s Permissions page and Permission manager instead.
- Different history period: Android 13 and Android 12 have different documented windows, and other versions may differ.
- Permission choice missing: available options depend on the permission, Android version, and device. Use the narrowest choice your phone presents.
- Play Protect unavailable or controlled: a work or school administrator may manage security settings. Ask the administrator before changing them.
Limits of a settings review
A clean Privacy dashboard does not show activity outside its retention window or prove that every operation was recorded. A clean Play Protect result means no warning was produced by that scan; it does not establish that the device has no spyware. Data safety can describe developer-reported practices but cannot independently verify runtime behavior. These tools are best used together as layers: inspect access, reduce unnecessary permissions, check warnings, and keep software updated.
If you need evidence for a legal, employment, or high-risk security matter, ordinary Android settings are not a forensic examination. Preserve relevant information and seek qualified professional assistance rather than repeatedly changing settings and assuming the result proves what happened.
Bottom line
Start with Privacy dashboard, restrict permissions to what each feature genuinely needs, review Play Protect, and read Data safety before installing. Treat unexplained background access, pressure to enable restricted settings, and mismatches between purpose and behavior as reasons to stop and verify. Use the controls as practical risk reduction—not as a promise that a phone is completely free of spyware.
