You can check the mobile number saved with your Aadhaar through UIDAI’s official verification service. If the number is wrong, lost or inaccessible, UIDAI’s FAQ directs you to request a change at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or through the postman service. UIDAI’s current Aadhaar app page also lists mobile-number update, but the app and the myAadhaar website are separate services, and availability or eligibility may depend on what the live app currently offers.
Use only UIDAI services. Do not use a third-party “Aadhaar lookup” site or give your Aadhaar details to an agent claiming it can reveal the linked number.
Check the mobile number currently linked to Aadhaar
UIDAI provides a verification feature for the mobile number declared during Aadhaar enrolment or during the latest Aadhaar detail update. Start at UIDAI’s Updating Data on Aadhaar page and use the official mobile-number verification option shown there.

- Select the option for verifying the mobile number declared at enrolment or in the latest update.
- Enter the details requested by the official service and complete its on-screen authentication or verification step.
- Record the result. If the number is current and you can receive messages on it, you can continue using Aadhaar online services. If it is old, incorrect or unavailable, arrange an update rather than trying to recover the number through an unofficial site.
UIDAI says, “Registered mobile number is essential to access Aadhaar Online Services.” That statement appears on its official guidance page, last updated 17 September 2026, and explains why a disconnected or incorrect number can block online actions.

Checking a number is different from changing it
The verification service tells you what UIDAI has on record. It does not itself replace the number. A replacement is a demographic-data update and must follow one of UIDAI’s currently supported update routes.
- To verify: use UIDAI’s official mobile-number verification feature.
- To change: use the route that is available to you: the current Aadhaar app if it presents the mobile-update service and instructions for your case, an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre, or the postman route described in UIDAI’s FAQ.
- If you lost the old SIM: UIDAI’s FAQ says the old mobile number is not required for the mobile-number update.
- If you do not have a supporting document for the number change: the same FAQ says a supporting document is not required for this update.
Which update route should you use?
UIDAI’s pages describe three practical routes, but they do not establish identical availability or eligibility for every holder. The following comparison keeps the distinctions clear.

There is an important wording difference in UIDAI’s own material. The FAQ on the Your Aadhaar page says mobile update is “not permitted through online mode,” while the current Updating Data on Aadhaar page lists mobile-number update in the Aadhaar app. Treat the app listing as a current service indication, not as a promise that every holder can complete the change remotely. The myAadhaar web portal should not be assumed to support the update merely because the Aadhaar app does.

Use the Aadhaar app only after checking its live service list
UIDAI’s current service page lists mobile-number update in the Aadhaar app, but the cited pages do not provide a complete app workflow, rollout schedule, authentication requirements or eligibility rules. That means the safest app procedure is to verify availability first rather than relying on an old online guide.
- Install or open the official Aadhaar app from your device’s authorised app store.
- Check the app’s current service list for mobile-number update.
- Read the in-app eligibility, identity-authentication and confirmation instructions before submitting anything.
- Proceed only if the app accepts your situation and shows the applicable charge, if any.
- Save the acknowledgement or reference shown by the app and wait for UIDAI’s confirmation notification.
If the service is absent, fails its authentication step, or does not accept your case, do not keep retrying through unofficial apps or websites. Use the explicit centre route in UIDAI’s FAQ instead. The fact that an app listing exists does not establish that all users, regions or account states can use it.
Update the number at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre
The enrolment-centre route is the clearest procedure in UIDAI’s published FAQ and is the fallback when the app is unavailable or your old SIM is gone.
1. Find an official centre
Use the centre-locator link referenced on UIDAI’s Aadhaar Seva Kendra page. The page points to UIDAI’s Bhuvan-based locator for finding an Aadhaar centre. Select an official location rather than relying on a search advertisement or a private agent.

2. Book an appointment if it helps
UIDAI says appointment booking is free and does not require the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. That matters when the number you are replacing cannot receive an OTP. Use the appointment system linked from the Aadhaar Seva Kendra page, choose the relevant demographic-update service, and keep the appointment details.
Walk-in arrangements and available time slots can vary by centre. The booking page and the centre itself are the authority for the current schedule.
3. Request a mobile-number update
At the centre, tell the operator that you need to update the mobile number linked to Aadhaar. UIDAI’s FAQ specifically says that the old mobile number and a supporting document are not required for this update. You must still complete whatever identity or biometric authentication the centre’s current process requests; the cited UIDAI pages do not define a universal list of documents or authentication steps, so follow the operator’s official instructions.
4. Review the details before submission
Check every digit of the new number on the operator’s screen or form before confirming. A single transposed digit can send future OTPs and notifications to someone else. Ask for the acknowledgement slip or reference number and verify that the requested service is recorded as a mobile-number or demographic update.

UIDAI’s current Aadhaar Seva Kendra fee information lists ₹75 for a standalone demographic update, including a mobile-number update. The listed charge includes applicable taxes. The same demographic update is free when it is performed together with a biometric update.
Because fees can change, check the amount displayed at the centre before authorising payment. UIDAI says the applicable charge is displayed at the centre and on the acknowledgement slip. Keep that slip until the update is confirmed or any complaint is resolved.
Do not pay an agent an additional “unlock,” “OTP” or “urgent processing” fee. The official appointment is free, and the centre’s displayed charge is the reference for a centre submission.

What happens after you submit the change?
UIDAI says it sends a notification to the newly supplied mobile number or email after a mobile-number or email update. It does not issue a new Aadhaar letter for those contact-detail changes, so waiting for a replacement letter is not the right way to check progress.
UIDAI’s Your Aadhaar page states that normally 90% of update requests are completed within 30 days. This is an aggregate service statistic, not a guarantee that an individual request will finish within 30 days. Keep the acknowledgement reference and use UIDAI’s official status or grievance channels if the request remains unresolved.
If you lost the old SIM or cannot receive OTPs
You can still request the change
UIDAI’s FAQ says the old mobile number is not required for a mobile-number update. It also says a supporting document is not required. Therefore, losing the SIM does not by itself make the update impossible.
Book the appointment without the old number
UIDAI says its appointment booking does not require the Aadhaar-registered mobile number. Use another reachable number for appointment communication if the booking form asks for one, and take the booking confirmation to the centre.
Do not attempt to bypass authentication
A missing SIM does not justify sharing Aadhaar details with a third party that promises to “retrieve” the number. The centre or an officially available Aadhaar-app flow must complete the required authentication. If the app rejects the request, use the centre route rather than trying an unverified workaround.
If the verification result is not what you expected
The displayed number is an old number
Submit a mobile-number update through the app only if its current service and instructions support your case. Otherwise, use an enrolment centre or the postman route named in UIDAI’s FAQ. There is no need to keep the old SIM active solely to qualify for the centre update.
The displayed number is correct but messages do not arrive
First check whether the SIM is active and can receive ordinary SMS messages. If the number works for other services but Aadhaar messages do not arrive, keep the verification result and acknowledgement reference, then contact UIDAI through its official support channel rather than submitting repeated changes.

The update is still pending after submission
Use the reference on your acknowledgement slip when checking the request status or raising a grievance. UIDAI’s 30-day figure is a normal aggregate completion statement, not an individual deadline. If you need help, UIDAI lists helpline 1947 for grievances.
You received a notification but the number is still unusable
Confirm that the number in the notification matches the number you intended to submit. If it does not, return to an official update route and report the discrepancy with your acknowledgement details. Do not disclose OTPs to anyone who contacts you claiming to be from UIDAI.

myAadhaar website versus the Aadhaar app
Many instructions use “online Aadhaar update” as a catch-all phrase, but the channel matters here. UIDAI’s FAQ says a mobile update is not permitted through online mode, while another current UIDAI page lists the service in the Aadhaar app. The app is therefore not interchangeable with the myAadhaar web portal.
- The myAadhaar web portal should not be treated as a confirmed mobile-number-change route based on the cited FAQ.
- The Aadhaar app currently has a mobile-update listing on UIDAI’s service page, but the live app determines whether the feature is available to your account and circumstances.
- The enrolment centre remains the explicit, published fallback when the app does not offer the service or cannot complete your request.
Before starting, read the current wording in the app itself. If its instructions conflict with an older article or video, follow the live UIDAI service instructions and retain any reference number it generates.

- Use UIDAI pages whose domain is uidai.gov.in and the official Aadhaar app.
- Never use a site that claims it can reveal an Aadhaar-linked number without verification.
- Never share an OTP, app login code or authentication response with a caller or agent.
- Check the new number digit by digit before submitting.
- Keep the acknowledgement slip and any app reference until confirmation arrives.
- Compare the amount requested with the fee displayed by the centre. The current listed standalone demographic-update charge is ₹75, inclusive of applicable taxes.
- For a complaint or unresolved request, use UIDAI’s official support route and helpline 1947.

Before you leave the centre
Use a short final check to prevent avoidable corrections. Confirm that the operator has selected a mobile-number or demographic update, read the new number back digit by digit, and make sure the amount paid matches the charge displayed at the centre. The acknowledgement should show the service request and provide a reference you can retain. If the operator asks for an extra amount or claims that an old SIM or supporting document is mandatory, ask for the applicable UIDAI rule and use the official helpline if the issue is not resolved.

Web pages, videos and older centre instructions may use different wording because UIDAI’s channels are updated at different times. Give priority to the live UIDAI page, the current Aadhaar app screen and instructions at an official centre. In particular, do not infer that a mobile-number update is available on the myAadhaar website simply because the Aadhaar app lists it. Conversely, do not assume the app listing guarantees access for every account. Save screenshots or references only as your own record; never send them, along with OTPs, to an unverified contact.

Requests can remain pending or require follow-up, so retain the centre slip or app reference. If the status does not change after a reasonable wait, use UIDAI’s official status and grievance channels and quote the reference instead of submitting duplicate requests.
