Start by measuring, not deleting. In WordPress, open Tools → Site Health → Info → Directories and Sizes to see the size of the WordPress directory, uploads, themes, plugins, database, and total installation. Then compare those figures with your hosting account’s disk-usage report. The host’s number is authoritative for your quota because it may also include backups, logs, mailboxes, staging sites, or other sites in the same account.

Once you know which category is large, make a recoverable backup, remove only confirmed disposable data, and check the quota again. This approach frees space without guessing at files that your site still needs.

What disk usage means on a WordPress site

WordPress storage is split between files and the database. Files include WordPress core, themes, plugins, images, documents, generated thumbnails, cached assets, logs, and backup archives. The database contains posts, pages, settings, comments, user records, revisions, transients, and data created by plugins.

A WordPress screen can show the size of the installation, but it does not necessarily represent every byte counted by your hosting plan. A host may count account-level backups, email, access and error logs, staging copies, or a second website. Conversely, a host’s report can show a large category without explaining which WordPress folder created it. You need both views before deciding what to remove.

WordPress core’s get_space_used() function reports used space in megabytes and, unless a filter changes its behavior, calculates that figure from the uploads directory returned by wp_upload_dir() and measured with get_dirsize(). That makes the core figure useful for understanding media usage, but it is not a substitute for the account quota shown by your host.

Take a safe baseline before deleting anything

Record the current state so you can tell whether a change worked and recover if it did not. Create or verify a backup that can actually be restored; a backup stored in the same full hosting account will not protect you from a quota or account failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write down the host’s current disk-usage total, available space, and inode count if the panel displays one.
  2. Export a fresh database backup and confirm that the archive can be opened. Keep at least one copy outside the hosting account.
  3. Record the sizes of the WordPress installation, uploads, plugins, themes, database, and any other large directories shown by Site Health or the host.
  4. Note whether the account contains mailboxes, staging sites, scheduled host backups, or other domains. They can consume the same quota.
  5. Make one class of change at a time, then test the site and measure again. A single large deletion is difficult to diagnose or undo.

Do not begin by selecting unfamiliar files in File Manager. Filenames such as wp-config.php, files in wp-includes, and active theme or plugin files are not safe cleanup targets simply because they look old.

Use Site Health to see WordPress directories

WordPress includes a built-in overview. The official Site Health documentation describes Directories and Sizes as showing where the different elements of the installation are located and what size those directories are.

  1. Sign in to the WordPress dashboard.
  2. Go to Tools → Site Health.
  3. Open the Info tab.
  4. Expand Directories and Sizes.
  5. Record the values for the WordPress directory, wp-content/uploads, plugins, themes, database, and total installation.

The figures give you a starting map, not a deletion list. A large uploads directory may be legitimate for a photography or publishing site. A small uploads directory does not rule out host-level backups, logs, or mail. Compare the categories with your baseline and investigate the largest unexpected item first.

Check the hosting account’s disk report

Open the storage, disk usage, or quota page in your hosting control panel. Labels vary by host, but useful reports usually break usage into files, databases, mail, logs, backups, and sometimes inodes. Treat this report as the number that determines whether an upload, update, or backup can succeed.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • Automatic host backups retained in the account.
  • Staging or development copies of the site.
  • Mailboxes and message attachments.
  • Web-server access and error logs.
  • Another domain or application sharing the account.
  • Large temporary files or cache folders created by a control panel or deployment process.

Ask the host which categories count toward your plan before removing anything managed by the host. Some panels let you delete old backups; others require support to change retention or storage location.

Drill into wp-content without guessing

Most site-specific files live under wp-content. Inspect its folders in a read-only way first, using the host’s directory-size view or a reputable disk-usage analyzer that does not modify files. The objective is to identify ownership and purpose, not merely the largest filename.

Uploads organized by year and month

The standard media library stores files under wp-content/uploads, commonly in year and month folders. Compare large folders with the Media Library and with content that is still published. Do not delete an image solely because it is not visible on the first media screen: it may be used in an older post, a custom field, a theme option, an RSS feed, or an external page.

Local backup archives

Backup plugins and migration tools may leave full-site archives, database dumps, or incremental packages in wp-content or a plugin-specific folder. Retain the copies required by your recovery policy, move older recoverable archives to storage outside the hosting account, and remove hosted copies only after confirming that an off-site copy opens and is complete.

Cache and optimization directories

Caches can become large because they contain generated page, CSS, JavaScript, image, or object-cache files. Use the plugin’s documented purge or reset function where available rather than deleting an active cache directory while requests are running. Purging cache may temporarily increase CPU usage as pages are regenerated, but it should not remove the source content.

Debug and error logs

Persistent debug logging can fill a quota quickly, especially when a plugin repeatedly emits the same warning. Download a copy if you need it for diagnosis, then rotate or remove old logs according to the host or plugin’s instructions. Disable verbose debugging on a production site after troubleshooting; otherwise the file will grow again.

Staging copies and generated folders

Staging, development, image-optimization, and import folders can contain complete duplicate media sets. Confirm which environment is live and whether a deployment process expects the folder before removing it. A staging site should have its own retention rule instead of being allowed to grow indefinitely.

Clean up media safely

Media is often the largest WordPress category. Housekeeping guidance from WordPress notes that many users upload graphics they never use and recommends moving unused images to a hard-drive folder when server space is limited.

Identify files that are truly unused

Use the Media Library, content search, theme settings, and any custom-field or page-builder references to verify a candidate. Treat image-size variants as a group: deleting only the original may leave generated thumbnails, while deleting a variant that a layout expects can create broken images. If a read-only analyzer reports orphaned files, manually confirm a sample before acting on the entire set.

Archive before removal

Download the original files and document their former paths or filenames. An external drive can serve as an archive destination, but it is not a replacement for a tested backup plan: keep another backup copy, protect the drive from failure, and periodically verify that files can be read.

Reduce future media growth

  • Set an appropriate maximum upload size and image dimensions for your editorial workflow.
  • Prefer correctly sized images instead of uploading a multi-megapixel original for a small display slot.
  • Review whether a plugin is generating unnecessary image sizes.
  • Schedule a monthly review of newly uploaded media and unused imports.

Compression can reduce transfer size, but it does not automatically remove the originals or every generated variant. WordPress.com documentation notes that Brotli compression applies to CSS, HTML, and JavaScript, not images, so do not expect page compression to solve a media-storage problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove inactive plugins and themes carefully

An inactive plugin usually keeps its files, and often its database tables, until you uninstall it. Deactivation therefore saves little or no disk space. Before uninstalling, check the plugin’s own data-retention behavior and export settings you may need later.

Plugins

  1. Go to Plugins → Installed Plugins and identify inactive entries.
  2. Confirm that no staging, rollback, integration, or scheduled task depends on the plugin.
  3. Export configuration or data if the plugin provides that option.
  4. Use the plugin’s Delete action rather than manually removing an unknown folder.
  5. Test the front end, dashboard, forms, cron-driven features, and integrations.

Do not delete a plugin that is inactive only because another plugin or a must-use configuration controls it. If you need a rollback copy, store it off-host instead of keeping several abandoned copies in wp-content/plugins.

Themes

Keep the active theme, its parent theme when applicable, and a fallback theme suitable for recovery. A child theme depends on its parent, so removing the parent can break the site even when the child is active. Delete older themes only after checking the active theme relationship and any staging or rollback requirement.

Investigate database growth

The database can grow through revisions, expired transients, orphaned metadata, logs, analytics records, and tables left by removed plugins. A large database is not automatically unhealthy; high-traffic sites may legitimately contain many posts, orders, or comments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure before optimizing

Use your host’s database-size view or a read-only analyzer to identify the largest tables. Match each table to WordPress core or the plugin that created it. A table with an unfamiliar name should be investigated, not deleted on sight.

Common candidates for review

  • Post revisions retained far beyond the number your editorial process needs.
  • Expired transients that are no longer referenced.
  • Orphaned post or user metadata left after content or plugins were removed.
  • Plugin tables documented as disposable after uninstalling that plugin.
  • Historical logs stored in database tables when a shorter retention period is sufficient.

WordPress housekeeping documentation acknowledges that databases can accumulate overhead, but it does not provide one universal cleanup query. Database cleanup is site-specific. Export a backup, make one category of change, and test publishing, login, search, forms, commerce workflows, and scheduled jobs before continuing.

Understand multisite quotas and upload failures

In a multisite network, an upload can be rejected even when the individual site appears to have free space. WordPress checks the remaining network quota and the configured maximum file size before accepting an upload through check_upload_size(). An exhausted quota produces an upload error.

Check the network’s storage settings, the affected site’s quota, and the host’s account quota separately. Removing an unused file from one site may not solve a network-level limit if another site or a host backup consumes the space.

Choose where to keep archives

Option Best fit Advantages Risks and checks
Off-host archive Old media and recoverable backup packages Reduces the hosting quota while retaining a copy Verify the copy, protect it from drive or account failure, and document retrieval
Host storage add-on A site that must keep files online and cannot change its workflow Quick capacity increase within the managed environment Recurring cost and possible retention limits; confirm exactly what storage is included
Larger hosting plan Persistent growth across files, database, mail, or multiple sites Raises the account-level limit rather than moving one category Higher recurring cost; check inode, database, CPU, and backup limits as well as gigabytes
Retained local copies Short-term rollback during a migration or redesign Fast recovery while changes are being tested Duplicates can consume the same quota; remove them after the rollback window

Compare measured directory and table sizes, backup retention and recoverability, what the host counts, cleanup risk, rollback options, and the recurring cost of external storage versus a larger plan. A larger quota is not a cleanup strategy if an automated process will fill it again.

Recheck the site after every cleanup batch

  1. Clear any relevant application cache through its normal control.
  2. Open the home page, representative posts, media-heavy pages, navigation, search, login, forms, and any revenue-critical workflow.
  3. Check the dashboard for Site Health errors and failed scheduled tasks.
  4. Upload a small test file if the original problem was an upload or quota error, then remove the test file.
  5. Refresh the host’s disk-usage report and record the new total.
  6. Keep the backup and change notes until the site has operated normally through a meaningful business cycle.

If the host total does not fall, the deleted WordPress files were not the largest quota consumer, the panel has not recalculated yet, or another account category is filling the space. Do not repeat the same deletion blindly.

Troubleshoot common symptoms

“WordPress says there is space, but uploads fail”

Check the host quota, inode limit, PHP upload limits, and—on multisite—the network and site quotas. A full account or inode limit can block uploads even when the uploads directory itself is modest.

“I deleted files, but the quota is unchanged”

Inspect host backups, mail, logs, staging copies, and other sites. Ask the host whether deleted files remain in a trash or snapshot area and when usage is recalculated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The database is large, but I cannot identify safe tables”

Stop before running a generic SQL cleanup. Match tables to the plugin or feature that created them, take a restorable export, and test one documented cleanup operation at a time.

“Deleting a theme or plugin broke the site”

Restore the removed files from your backup or reinstall the exact version, then check child-theme dependencies, plugin settings, and scheduled tasks. Keep a tested rollback copy before repeating the cleanup.

“The site fills up again after cleanup”

Find the recurring writer: backup retention, debug logging, cache generation, image variants, imports, or a runaway log table. Set a retention limit, rotate logs, reduce generated variants, or move archives off-host; simply buying capacity postpones the same failure.

Prevent disk pressure from returning

  • Review Site Health and the host quota on a fixed schedule, not only after an upload fails.
  • Set backup retention and destination rules so old archives do not remain in the live account indefinitely.
  • Keep production debugging quiet and rotate necessary logs.
  • Audit inactive plugins, themes, staging copies, and imported media after each project.
  • Track database growth by table and investigate sudden increases.
  • Maintain at least one recoverable backup outside the hosting account and periodically perform a test restore.
  • For multisite, monitor network quotas and per-site limits separately.

The practical rule is simple: measure the directory and database categories, compare them with the account quota, archive recoverable material off-host, remove only verified disposable data, and test after each change. That sequence restores capacity while preserving a path back if an assumption proves wrong.
