To see what is using space on an Apple TV 4K, open Settings > General, scroll to Usage, and select Manage Storage. The list shows each installed app and the space it uses. You can then turn on automatic offloading, or choose Offload or Delete for individual apps. Offloading removes the app but keeps its data; deleting removes both the app and its data.
What storage management on Apple TV 4K actually covers
Apple TV 4K is primarily a streaming device: video and music are streamed, while apps are stored locally. The storage-management controls described in Apple’s tvOS 27 Apple TV User Guide focus on those installed apps. They let you identify large apps and remove software you no longer need without buying an accessory or replacing the Apple TV.
Apple does not publish a storage-capacity figure in the storage-management material used for this guide. Do not assume that a particular Apple TV 4K model has a specific amount of free space, or that an external drive can expand it, based on these instructions. The available menu wording can also vary by tvOS release and hardware model; Apple notes that not every feature or item of content is available in every region or on every Apple TV model.
How to check which apps use storage
- From the Apple TV 4K Home Screen, open Settings.
- Select General.
- Scroll down to the Usage section.
- Select Manage Storage.
- Review the list of apps and the amount of space shown for each one.
Apple describes the result this way: “A list of the apps on your Apple TV 4K shows how much space each item is using.” Use that list as your decision point rather than guessing which app is large. An app near the top is simply a candidate for review; it is not automatically safe to remove if it contains data you still need.

Understand the two ways to remove an app
When you select an app in the storage list, Apple TV 4K can present Offload and Delete. They are not interchangeable.

Check the confirmation choice on the screen before approving it. The distinction matters most for apps that keep information locally. Offloading is the preservation-oriented option; deleting is the irreversible-in-practice cleanup choice for that app’s stored data.
Free space automatically with Offload Unused Apps
Apple TV 4K can remove apps you are not using while keeping their data. To enable that behavior:

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Turn on Offload Unused Apps.
After an app is offloaded automatically, its icon remains on the Home Screen with a download icon. Selecting that icon downloads the app again if it is still available in the App Store. Apple says the app’s data is restored in that situation when the app remains available.

This setting suits a shared Apple TV or a device where you want the system to reclaim app space without manually deciding on every unused title. It does not mean that every app disappears immediately, nor does it guarantee that an app will always be recoverable: availability in the App Store is a condition of downloading it again.
Manually offload or delete from Manage Storage
The storage list gives you the most direct, app-by-app control.
- Go to Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage.
- Find the app you want to manage in the list.
- Select the trash button beside that app.
- Choose Offload to remove the app while retaining its data, or choose Delete to remove the app and its data.
- Read the confirmation prompt and confirm the option you actually intend to use.
Use this route when you want to compare the space amounts before taking action. It also avoids removing an app merely because it is visible on the Home Screen: the usage list gives you the storage figure associated with each item.

- Highlight the app on the Home Screen.
- Press and hold the clickpad or touch surface on the Apple TV remote.
- Choose Delete App.
- Select either Delete or Offload when Apple TV presents the choices.
- Confirm your selection.
The Home Screen route is convenient when you already know which app you want to remove. The Manage Storage route is better when your goal is to discover what is consuming space, because it displays the per-app amounts first.
How to choose between offloading and deleting
Choose Offload when the data may matter later
Offloading is the safer choice when you may use the app again and want to preserve its data on the Apple TV. The app is removed to recover space, but the icon remains available so you can download the app again. This is especially useful when you are cleaning up temporarily rather than abandoning the app.
Choose Delete when you want the app and its data gone
Deleting is appropriate when you no longer need the app and do not want its local data retained. It recovers space by removing both components. Treat the confirmation as a data-removal decision, not merely an icon-removal decision.

Apple TV presents the action before it is completed. Stop if the prompt says Delete when you intended to preserve data, or says Offload when you intended a complete removal. This short pause is the practical safeguard Apple’s two-option design requires.

What happens when you download an app again
An offloaded app
An automatically offloaded app appears on the Home Screen with a download icon. Selecting it downloads the app again if it is still available in the App Store, and Apple says its data is restored in that case. Availability is therefore part of the recovery path; an app that is no longer offered cannot be downloaded through that route.
A deleted purchased app
Apple says a purchased app that you delete can be downloaded again without purchasing it again. That statement concerns the purchase itself. It does not guarantee that the app’s data will return: deleting removes the app and its data, so any information that existed only on the Apple TV may not be restored.
Why the distinction matters
If preserving a return path is more important than maximum cleanup, offload before deleting. If you have decided that the app and its local information should no longer remain, delete it and accept the data consequence shown by the confirmation prompt.
A safe storage-cleanup workflow
- Measure first. Open Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage and inspect the app list.
- Identify the decision. Decide whether you are trying to reclaim space temporarily or remove an app permanently.
- Protect needed data. For an app you may use again, select Offload rather than Delete.
- Remove unwanted data. For an app you no longer need, select Delete only after accepting that its data will be removed.
- Recheck the list. Return to Manage Storage to review the remaining apps and decide whether another item needs attention.
- Automate future cleanup if appropriate. Turn on Settings > Apps > Offload Unused Apps when you prefer automatic handling of unused apps.
This sequence separates observation from deletion. It also lets you make the offload-versus-delete decision while the app and its reported space use are visible.

Common situations and the right response
You cannot remember which app is large
Do not start by deleting icons at random. Open Manage Storage; Apple’s list is the place provided for seeing how much space each app uses. Review the figures and then choose an action for a specific app.
You want space back but may need an app later
Use Offload, either for a selected app in Manage Storage or through Offload Unused Apps. The manual option gives you control over one app; the setting lets Apple handle unused apps automatically.
You deleted an app and now want it again
Download the purchased app again without repurchasing it, as Apple describes. Plan for the possibility that its previous data is not restored, because deletion removes that data.
An offloaded app shows a download icon
Select the icon to download the app again. This depends on the app still being available in the App Store. Apple says the data is restored for an automatically offloaded app when it remains available.
Your menus do not match these labels
The cited guide is for tvOS 27 and Apple TV 4K. Apple notes that features and content can vary by region and hardware model, and the available evidence does not establish the exact wording for every earlier tvOS release. Look for the equivalent General, Usage, and app-management controls rather than assuming every version uses identical labels.
What these controls do not establish
- They do not provide a published storage-capacity number in Apple’s storage-management guide.
- They describe app cleanup, not a method for expanding the Apple TV’s capacity with external storage.
- They do not guarantee that data will return after a deletion; Apple specifically warns that deleted-app data may not be restored.
- They do not guarantee that an automatically offloaded app can be reinstalled if it is no longer available in the App Store.
Keep those limits in mind when planning a cleanup. The controls are designed to show app usage and reclaim space through offloading or deletion, not to promise a particular capacity or recovery result.

Final decision
Start with Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage to see exactly which apps use space. Select Offload when you want the app gone but its data preserved, and select Delete only when you accept removing both the app and its data. For hands-off maintenance, enable Settings > Apps > Offload Unused Apps and remember that reinstalling depends on the app remaining in the App Store.
