If your Samsung Galaxy is running out of space, start at Settings > Device care > Storage and check what is using storage. Then remove files or apps you no longer need, clear an individual app’s cache if appropriate, or move eligible files to cloud storage or a microSD card supported by your exact model. Avoid clearing app data unless you are prepared to reset that app.
Check what is using storage
On supported menus, open Settings > Device care > Storage. Review the categories Samsung displays, such as images, videos, audio files, and documents. Select only files you recognize and intend to remove. You can also use the My Files app to locate and manage files.
Samsung notes that menu names and paths can vary by model and software version. If you do not see Device care or Storage at that path, look for storage management in Settings or use Settings search for “Storage.”
Choose a way to reclaim space
| Method | Useful when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Delete unwanted files or apps | You want to reclaim local space immediately and no longer need the selected items. | Verify the selected files are ones you intend to remove; deleting may be difficult to undo. |
| Clear an app’s cache | An app’s temporary files are taking up space. | Clear cache, not app data, unless you specifically want to reset the app. |
| Move or sync files to cloud storage | You want off-device access to eligible files. | Confirm the files are available in the cloud before deleting local originals. Samsung lists Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and Dropbox as options compatible with Samsung devices in its low-storage guidance: Samsung’s low-storage troubleshooting guidance. |
| Use a microSD card | Your specific Galaxy model has a compatible card slot and the content can be stored on the card. | Check your exact model’s card support and transfer instructions. Samsung says many apps cannot be moved to an SD card: Samsung’s storage-space support page. |
Clear cache without resetting an app
Cache is temporary data an app stores, and clearing it is different from clearing the app’s data. The available controls and path can differ by software version, but the app’s information page in Settings typically provides separate Clear cache and Clear data options.

Choose Clear cache when you want to remove temporary files. Samsung describes Clear data as returning the app to its factory defaults; it can remove settings and locally stored app information. Check what the app keeps on the device before using Clear data. Samsung explains storage management and cache clearing.
Move files only if your Galaxy supports a microSD card
A microSD card can provide removable storage for eligible files on supported Galaxy phones and tablets, but it is not a universal way to expand internal storage. Confirm that your exact model has a card slot and check Samsung’s instructions for transferring the type of file you want to move. Samsung cautions that “Many apps are not eligible to be moved to a SD card.” A card therefore does not guarantee that apps can be installed or moved there.

Cloud syncing or uploading can keep files accessible off-device, but seeing a cloud option does not by itself prove that a safe copy exists. Open the cloud service and confirm the files have uploaded and can be accessed before deleting the originals. Samsung’s low-storage guidance identifies Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and Dropbox as compatible options; availability and account terms are determined by those services.

Temporary Cloud Backup is not permanent archive storage
Samsung’s Temporary Cloud Backup is a separate, time-limited device-backup feature. Samsung states that backups are kept for up to 30 days; availability may depend on country, carrier, and model. Samsung Electronics’ 2023 announcement also states that the feature requires Wi-Fi for transfers and limits each individual file to 100 GB. The announcement described the service as free with no total storage limit, but those details describe Temporary Cloud Backup, not every Samsung Cloud service or other cloud providers. See Samsung Cloud support and Samsung’s 2023 Temporary Cloud Backup announcement.
