To verify an SSD before buying, identify the exact model and hardware revision, then confirm NAND type, controller, and country of origin from first-party documents and the physical label. Treat a missing specification as unknown; do not infer TLC, QLC, or a controller from a family name, capacity, price, or a software utility alone.
The reliable process is: record the complete SKU, read the manufacturer’s product brief or datasheet, cross-check an installed sample with its firmware and NVMe identification data, and verify origin on the label or invoice. This matters because manufacturers can change components under one retail family name.
Why the exact SKU matters more than the product family
SSD families often contain several capacities, interfaces, generations, and hardware revisions. A 1 TB model may not use the same NAND package or controller as a 2 TB model, and a later revision can change components without changing the family name printed on a retailer’s page. A listing that says only “Series X NVMe” is therefore not enough to establish the drive’s internal parts.
Before checking specifications, copy the complete identifier from the listing and, if possible, from the drive label. Record:

Keep the seller’s SKU, the manufacturer’s SKU, and the label’s model string side by side. If they differ, stop treating the listing as a confirmed match until the seller or manufacturer explains the difference.
How to verify NAND type (TLC, QLC, MLC, or SLC)
Start with first-party documentation
Search the manufacturer’s product brief, datasheet, or support page for the exact part number and capacity. Look for a field explicitly named NAND, NAND flash, flash memory, or memory type. The document should identify the cell type as TLC, QLC, MLC, SLC, or another stated technology.
SanDisk’s support guidance sets the appropriate evidence standard: “Public information about the type of NAND flash memory, drive, or SSD used in Sandisk products will be in the Product Brief or Data Sheet if published by Sandisk.” In practical terms, a manufacturer statement in a document for your exact SKU is stronger evidence than a retailer description, forum post, teardown photograph, or an assumption based on the brand’s usual parts.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat to do when NAND is not stated
If the product brief and support material do not name a cell type, record NAND: unspecified. Do not convert silence into “probably TLC” or “probably QLC.” The absence of a NAND field can mean that the manufacturer does not publish the information, that the drive has multiple approved component configurations, or simply that the document is incomplete. None of those possibilities proves a particular cell type.
Do not treat a controller model, benchmark result, capacity, endurance rating, or advertised speed as proof of NAND. Those characteristics can be shared by drives using different flash configurations.
Check that the document matches the drive you intend to buy
Compare every identifier in the document with the listing: model suffix, capacity, interface, form factor, revision, and regional part number. A datasheet for a 2 TB PCIe drive does not establish the NAND in a 1 TB SATA variant, even if both use the same family name. Record the document title and publication or access date in your buying notes so you can detect a later revision.

How to identify the SSD controller
Find a controller field in the manufacturer’s specification
Use the same exact-SKU search, but look for a separate field labelled controller, controller IC, or controller model. Samsung’s support page for the 983 DCT illustrates the desired level of disclosure by presenting both “Controller” and “NAND Flash” fields. A product document that lists both fields lets you record them independently rather than guessing one from the other.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy a controller does not prove NAND type
Controller compatibility spans multiple flash types. Marvell describes controllers intended for TLC and QLC, while Microchip documents support for SLC, MLC, TLC, and QLC. Therefore, discovering a controller model does not establish which NAND package a particular retail drive contains. Record two separate entries:
- NAND: the cell type explicitly stated for this exact SKU, or “unspecified.”
- Controller: the controller model explicitly stated for this exact SKU, or “unspecified.”
Do not fill one field from the other. If a manufacturer lists the controller but omits NAND, the correct record is “controller identified; NAND unspecified.”
Account for revisions and approved alternatives
A manufacturer can qualify more than one component while retaining a common family name. If a document says “controller A or controller B,” record the alternatives exactly and ask the seller which revision is shipping. If the document is revision-specific, match the revision printed on the drive or box. A retailer’s photograph may show an older board than the unit currently in stock, so treat photos as identity clues, not definitive component documentation.
Using software to cross-check an installed SSD
What CrystalDiskInfo can and cannot tell you
CrystalDiskInfo supports most current SATA and NVMe controllers and can expose identifying information for an SSD already connected to a computer. Use it as a cross-check against the model, serial number, firmware, and revision you recorded from the label or documentation.
Its documentation warns that most RAID controllers are unsupported. If the drive is behind a hardware RAID controller, the utility may show no drive, incomplete data, or the RAID volume rather than the individual SSD. That is a support limitation, not evidence that the SSD lacks a controller or NAND specification.

Compare NVMe Identify data
For an NVMe drive, inspect the controller-identification data provided by the system or an NVMe-capable utility. Compare at least:
- Model number.
- Serial number.
- Firmware revision.
- Hardware revision, where exposed.
The model and serial should correspond to the physical label, while the firmware and revision should be plausible for the manufacturer document and seller listing. Software can confirm what is installed today; it cannot guarantee that every unit sold under the same listing will use the same future bill of materials.
Do not use a utility as the sole buying proof
A software report describes a drive you already own or can inspect. It does not authenticate an unopened unit, establish the origin printed on its packaging, or prove that a retailer will ship the same revision. Use software identification after you have first locked the exact SKU and gathered first-party specifications.

How to verify country of manufacture or country of origin
Understand what “country of origin” means
Country of origin is not necessarily the country where NAND wafers were fabricated. Assembly or another legally recognized substantial transformation can determine the origin shown for the finished SSD. Intel states: “The COO of Intel® SSDs is generally the country where the assembly of the SSD occurs.” Use the wording on the manufacturer’s label or commercial documentation rather than assuming the wafer-fabrication country.
Check the box or drive label
Inspect the retail box and the SSD label for a country-of-origin or “Made in” marking. Photograph the label and retain the image with the model, serial, and date. The marking should be legible and tied to the exact unit you are buying, not merely to a product family page.
Check the commercial invoice
For procurement, import, or tax records, compare the label with the commercial invoice. The invoice may contain the origin declaration required for your transaction even when a consumer listing omits it. Keep the invoice because a later software report cannot establish where the unit was assembled.

Request confirmation from the manufacturer
Intel’s documented request route asks for the SSD model or part number, the requester’s country, the import country, and the approximate purchase date. Supply those details when origin affects customs, government purchasing, warranty routing, or regulatory compliance. Ask for confirmation for the exact part number, not a general statement about the brand.

Check that the label, listing, and NVMe identity agree
The Open Compute Project specification requires the NVMe model, serial number, and hardware revision printed on the label to match the values returned by Identify Controller data. It also requires country-of-origin marking. Use those requirements as a practical consistency check even when you are buying a consumer drive.
- Model mismatch: the listing, label, and software may represent different capacities or revisions.
- Serial mismatch: the software may be reporting a different drive, a RAID volume, or a substituted unit.
- Revision mismatch: the listing may describe an earlier hardware revision.
- Origin missing: the unit may not meet your procurement or import documentation requirement.
Any mismatch is a reason to pause the purchase and contact the seller. Do not “average” conflicting identities or assume the most favorable specification is correct.
A complete pre-purchase verification workflow
- Lock the listing. Copy the full model or part number, capacity, form factor, interface, hardware revision, and seller listing date. Save the listing page or an image of the identifying section.
- Locate first-party documents. Search the manufacturer’s support site for that exact part number. Open the product brief, datasheet, or support entry rather than relying on a family overview.
- Record NAND. Enter the explicitly stated cell type. If no document names TLC, QLC, MLC, SLC, or another type, write “unspecified.”
- Record the controller separately. Copy the controller model exactly as documented. Do not infer it from NAND, interface speed, or a teardown of another capacity.
- Record other comparison fields. Capture DRAM or host-memory-buffer design when published, interface and PCIe generation, endurance rating, warranty, firmware information, and capacity.
- Verify origin evidence. Check the drive or box label and the commercial invoice. If origin matters legally or commercially, request manufacturer confirmation with the model, requester’s country, import country, and approximate purchase date.
- Cross-check an accessible sample. If you can inspect a drive, use CrystalDiskInfo for SATA or NVMe identification, remembering that most RAID controllers are unsupported. For NVMe, compare model, serial, firmware, and hardware revision with Identify Controller data.
- Resolve discrepancies before payment. Ask the seller to identify the exact shipping revision or provide a photograph of the label. If the answer remains unclear, choose a listing with complete, matching documentation.
- Archive your evidence. Save document names, revision dates, label photographs, invoice details, and the date checked. This record protects you if a family name later covers a different component configuration.
Comparison table: fields that should match before you compare drives
Use one row per exact SKU and hardware revision. “Not stated” is a valid result; it is preferable to a guess.
| Field | What to record | Acceptable evidence | If absent or conflicting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model and revision | Full part number, capacity, form factor, hardware revision | Label, manufacturer document, listing | Pause; family name alone is insufficient |
| NAND cell type | TLC, QLC, MLC, SLC, another stated type, or “unspecified” | Exact-SKU product brief or datasheet | Record “unspecified”; do not infer |
| Controller | Controller model or “unspecified” | Exact-SKU controller field | Do not derive it from NAND or speed |
| DRAM or HMB | Published DRAM or host-memory-buffer design | Manufacturer specification | Write “not stated” |
| Interface and PCIe generation | SATA or NVMe and applicable PCIe generation | Manufacturer document and listing | Do not compare unlike interfaces as equivalent |
| Endurance and warranty | Published rating and warranty terms for the exact capacity | Manufacturer specification and warranty page | Write “not stated” for the missing field |
| Firmware | Version on the inspected unit or documented baseline | Drive utility, label, or manufacturer notice | Record the date; versions can change |
| Country of origin | Country marked for the finished SSD | Box, drive label, invoice, manufacturer confirmation | Request confirmation when required |
How to handle common buying problems
The retailer lists TLC, but the manufacturer does not
Mark NAND as unspecified until the manufacturer publishes the claim for the exact SKU. Ask the seller for the source and the shipping revision. A retailer may have copied a specification from another capacity or an earlier revision.
The controller appears in a teardown but not in documentation
Treat the teardown as an observation of that particular sample, not a guarantee for unopened stock. Record the controller as unspecified for your purchase unless the manufacturer ties it to your exact model and revision.

The utility reports a different model string
Check whether the drive is behind RAID, a storage adapter, or a virtual volume. Reconnect it through a supported direct SATA or NVMe path if possible, then compare serial and firmware with the label. If the mismatch remains, stop and ask the seller to verify the unit.
The box and invoice show different origins
Do not choose one informally. Ask the seller for a corrected invoice or manufacturer confirmation for the exact part number and purchase date. Keep both documents for customs or procurement review.
The listing has no revision or origin information
Request those details before ordering. If the seller cannot identify the hardware revision or provide origin evidence required by your rules, select a listing with transparent documentation rather than assuming that all units in the family are identical.

Compare like for like: the same capacity class, interface, PCIe generation, and hardware revision. Then compare NAND cell type, controller, DRAM or host-memory-buffer design, endurance, warranty, firmware, and country of origin. Record the source and date beside every field.
Do not rank one drive as better merely because its family page names a controller while another page is silent. The first is documented; the second is unknown. Likewise, do not treat a stated country of assembly as a statement about where the NAND wafer was fabricated.
Decision rule before you buy
Proceed when the exact SKU is identified, the manufacturer documents NAND and controller independently or clearly marks them as unspecified, the label and listing agree, and origin evidence meets your requirements. Pause when a seller relies on a family name, mixes capacities or revisions, omits origin, or presents software identification as proof of an unopened unit. This discipline prevents a common mistake: paying for a specification that was never established for the drive you will actually receive.
