To check whether an Indian non-convertible debenture (NCD) is listed and saleable, identify the exact issue, series and ISIN, verify its current exchange status, read the issuer’s latest disclosures, inspect recent security-level trades, and ask your broker whether a live bid and offer are available for that ISIN. A listing only means the security is admitted to a market; it does not promise a buyer, a continuous order book or an exit at your target price.
Use this sequence before committing money: establish the instrument’s identity, confirm that it is active and not redeemed or suspended, review credit and payment information, examine recent trading, then check executable quantity, price, accrued interest and settlement with the broker. Treat every status and quote as time-sensitive.
What “listed” means for an NCD
Listing is an exchange admission status. It tells you that a particular security can be represented in the exchange’s systems, subject to the exchange’s rules and the security remaining active. It does not tell you that another investor is currently willing to buy your units.

National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) public-issue guidance states: "All Non-Convertible Debentures (NCDs) issued through Initial Public Offer gets listed on the Capital Market segment of the Exchange." That statement is specifically about NCDs issued through an initial public offer. Do not extend it to every privately placed or otherwise issued debenture, and do not treat an old offer document as proof of current tradability.

For a real transaction, the security—not merely the issuer or issue name—must match. An issuer can have several tranches with different maturities, coupons, seniority, symbols or series. The exchange symbol and series identify the trading line; the ISIN is the key identifier to match across the exchange, depository and broker.
What you need before searching
Collect these details from the allotment advice, demat statement, current offer document or issuer disclosure:
- Issuer’s legal name.
- Issue or tranche name and, where shown, the series.
- ISIN.
- Coupon rate and whether it is fixed, floating or otherwise structured.
- Final maturity date and any put, call or early-redemption terms.
- Whether the instrument is secured or unsecured, and the documented charge and seniority.
- Face value and the number of units you hold.
If two records disagree, stop and resolve the identity before looking at yield or placing an order. Searching only by a short issue name can return the wrong series.

Locate the exact exchange security
Use NSE’s debt-information and securities-available-for-trading resources. Search by issuer and then match the symbol, series, maturity and ISIN to your holding or the security you are considering. Record the exchange segment and the date on which you checked. If no exact match appears, do not assume the instrument is unlisted; it may be listed elsewhere, have a different series code, be inactive, or have been redeemed. Ask the issuer, registrar or broker to confirm the current ISIN.

Confirm current status, not just historical admission
Check the exchange’s current security record for an active, available-to-trade status. Look for suspension, redemption, delisting, maturity or other status changes. A historical listing in an offer document or an old finance-site page cannot establish that an order can be entered today.

Read the latest issuer and exchange disclosures
Review the most recent continuing disclosures and the exchange’s debt datasets. NSE provides resources covering credit ratings, interest payments, redemptions, default payments, settlement information and other debt-market records. SEBI’s disclosure framework for listed non-convertible securities sets obligations for material information. Check rating history rather than only the current grade, payment dates and actual payment status, redemption notices, defaults, restructuring, security or charge changes, and material events affecting the issuer.

A rating is an assessment of credit risk, not a guarantee that interest or principal will be paid. A rating change or missed payment can also reduce the number of willing buyers even when the security remains technically listed.

Inspect security-level trading history
Open the relevant NSE debt reports, including security-wise trades, online trades and trade statistics. Examine the dates of trades, how often they occurred, traded quantity or value, and whether activity is recent. Separate activity in your exact ISIN from trades in another series of the same issuer.
There is no universal numerical liquidity threshold established in the official material for all NCDs. A trade recorded last month, or a large historical turnover figure, is evidence of past reported activity only. It is not a standing bid for your units today.

Check executable conditions with your broker
Ask the broker or trading platform to confirm support for the exact ISIN and intended route. Before submitting an order, check the current bid and offer, quantity available at each price, quote time, minimum tradable quantity, price increments, accrued-interest treatment, brokerage and other charges, and settlement details. If the screen shows only a last-traded price but no executable bid, you do not yet have evidence that you can sell at that price.
For a purchase, calculate the cash outlay including the quoted clean price, accrued interest and charges. For a sale, calculate the net proceeds after those items. The resulting yield depends on the transaction price, payment schedule, redemption value, holding period and assumptions; a headline coupon or last price is not the same as a realized return.

Identify the transaction route
Determine whether the order will be matched on an exchange order book, negotiated over the counter and reported through an exchange platform, or handled through an applicable request-for-quote (RFQ) facility. SEBI’s operational circular dated August 2021 describes OTC-trade reporting through exchange platforms and RFQ interaction for eligible participants. That circular is not a substitute for checking later SEBI and exchange notices, participant eligibility or instrument-specific conditions.

Recheck immediately before dealing
Listings, quotes, broker support, issuer disclosures and regulatory procedures can change. The official material reviewed for this guide was current to 13 October 2026; verify the latest exchange record, issuer filing, broker screen and applicable circular again on the day you trade.
How to judge liquidity rather than merely listing
Liquidity is the practical ability to sell the amount you own, within your required time, at a price close to the market value. It has at least three separate dimensions:
- Presence: whether the security is active and a route exists for orders or negotiated trades.
- Depth: how much quantity is available at prices near the current market.
- Continuity: whether buyers and sellers appear often enough to support an exit when you need one.
Use the following evidence together; none is sufficient alone.

Thin or stale activity should be treated as an exit-risk warning. You may need to accept a wider price concession, wait for a buyer, negotiate privately or hold the instrument until redemption. Do not invent a market-wide turnover cutoff: the official sources provide security-level data, not a single pass/fail liquidity percentage.
Exchange orders, OTC reports and RFQ are different
A debt trade appearing in an exchange report does not reveal the same thing in every case. Understand the route before interpreting the record.

SEBI’s August 2021 operational circular is a reference point for reporting and RFQ provisions, but procedures, eligible participants and operational details may have changed. Confirm the current rules with the exchange and broker rather than relying on a remembered workflow.

What to check in the issuer’s terms and disclosures
Liquidity cannot be separated from credit and legal terms. A security may trade rarely because buyers are concerned about the issuer, the structure or the cash-flow timing.

Confirm each term for the current issue. Generic exchange pages describe the market and provide data resources; they do not supply every contractual term for every NCD.
How to compare two or more NCDs
Compare securities on a common basis and write down the assumptions behind any yield calculation. A higher coupon can simply reflect higher credit, duration or liquidity risk.

Reject comparisons that use one NCD’s last-traded price against another’s live executable quote, or one security’s gross coupon against another’s yield after accrued interest and costs.

What to do when the checks fail
The issuer or symbol appears, but your ISIN does not
Compare the full ISIN and series with your demat statement. Ask the registrar or broker whether the security was renamed, redeemed, suspended or listed under a different symbol. Do not place an order in a similar-looking series.
The security is listed, but there is no current bid
Listing has not produced an executable buyer. Ask whether the broker can solicit an OTC or RFQ quote for eligible participants, and what minimum size, price and settlement conditions apply. If no route is available, your practical choices may be to wait, negotiate through an authorised channel or hold to redemption, subject to the instrument’s risks.
The last trade is old
Use the age of the last trade as a warning that the displayed price may not represent current value. Request a fresh bid and offer and ask how much quantity is available, rather than relying on the historical number.
The broker rejects the order
Ask for the precise reason: unsupported ISIN, inactive security, route restriction, quantity rule, price-band issue, settlement requirement or participant eligibility. Obtain the current rule or broker instruction before trying another order.
The quote is different from the amount you expected
Check whether the difference comes from accrued interest, brokerage, taxes or other charges, and whether the quote is a clean price or a consideration amount. Recalculate net proceeds or total cost using the contract note’s conventions.
A rating change or missed payment appears
Read the underlying disclosure and payment status before trading. A security can remain listed while its credit risk and likely buyer pool have changed materially. Do not infer repayment from listing status or from the original rating.
A practical go/no-go checklist
Proceed only when you can answer all of these questions for the exact security:
- Do the issuer, series, maturity, coupon and ISIN match the instrument you intend to buy or sell?
- Does the current exchange record show an active, eligible status rather than redemption, suspension or another restriction?
- Have you read the latest rating, payment, redemption, default and material-event disclosures?
- Have you checked recent security-wise trade dates, frequency, quantity and value?
- Does your broker support this ISIN and the route you intend to use?
- Is there a current executable bid or offer, and is its quantity sufficient for your order?
- Do you understand clean price, accrued interest, charges, settlement and the assumptions behind your yield?
- Have you checked the latest SEBI and exchange notices, including any eligibility conditions for a liquidity window or RFQ?
If any answer is unknown, treat the NCD as unverified rather than assuming that a listing or a historical trade makes it liquid. The most defensible liquidity conclusion is always security-specific and date-specific: what traded recently, what can be executed now, and what terms and risks govern the cash flows if no buyer appears.
