To check an iPhone, first identify where the warning appeared: an iOS alert naming an app is different from a “virus detected” message inside a webpage. Then review unfamiliar apps and configuration profiles, install the latest iOS update offered for your model, and check account access if you suspect someone is monitoring or using your data. These steps can reveal specific problems, but no quick check can certify that every kind of compromise is absent.
Start by identifying the warning
If iOS says an app contains malware
Apple says iPhone regularly checks installed third-party apps for malware it identifies. If iOS warns that a named app contains malware and cannot be opened, delete it from the alert or view its details in Settings and choose Delete App. Apple advises against reopening or re-enabling the flagged app because it could harm the device or compromise privacy. See Apple’s instructions for a malware alert.
If the warning is inside a website or pop-up
A scary message within a Safari page is not evidence that iOS scanned your phone and found a virus. Apple warns that pop-ups can impersonate trusted companies, make false security or prize claims, request personal or financial information, or push unwanted downloads. Don’t tap links, call phone numbers, download anything, or trust a fake close button in the message. Navigate away using Safari’s address or search field. In Settings, open Safari and turn on Block Pop-ups and Fraudulent Website Warning. Apple’s guidance is at Block pop-ups in Safari and handle persistent ads.
Review apps you do not recognize
Browse your App Library and look for apps you do not remember installing. If you are unsure what an app does, look it up in the App Store; delete it if you do not want it. To remove an app from App Library, touch and hold its icon, then tap Delete App. An unfamiliar app warrants a closer look, but its presence alone does not prove that the phone is infected.

Check configuration profiles and device management
Open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and review any listed profiles or management entries. Profiles can configure accounts and other device settings. A school or employer may legitimately manage a device or install a profile, so do not remove one from a work- or school-managed iPhone without checking with the administrator.
If the iPhone is personal and a profile is unexpected, find out where it came from before deciding whether to remove it. Removing a profile deletes its associated settings, apps, and data, and can disrupt services such as a school VPN. Apple explains the steps and effects in Install or remove configuration profiles on iPhone.

Install the latest iOS update offered for your iPhone
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Review the update offered for your device and follow the onscreen instructions to install it.
- Return to Software Update later if you want to check whether another update is available.
The newest version available depends on the iPhone model. Apple’s April 2, 2026 guidance calls keeping software up to date the single most important security step and notes that protections can vary on older devices. For the latest version appropriate to your phone, rely on Software Update rather than assuming one iOS release applies to every model. Apple’s guidance is Update iOS to protect your iPhone from web attacks; its security release notes are specific to each version and device, as shown in the iOS 26.6.1 and iPadOS 26.6.1 security-content notice.
If you suspect snooping, check sharing and account access
If your concern is that someone can see your location, data, or activity, review who and what has access rather than relying only on an app check. On iOS 16 or later, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check. Choose Manage Sharing & Access to review people and apps with whom you share information. Safety Check can also help review devices connected to your Apple Account, trusted phone numbers, and options for changing your Apple Account password or iPhone passcode. Use Emergency Reset if you need to quickly stop sharing.

What a check can—and cannot—tell you
- Battery drain, heat, or slow performance alone do not establish a virus. These are nonspecific problems, not diagnostic tests. Consider recent changes and install available iOS updates.
- No malware alert is not a clean bill of health. Reviewing apps and profiles helps with those specific checks, but does not prove an account or device is uncompromised.
- A third-party scanner cannot be assumed to scan all of iOS. Apple documents built-in app checks and multiple security protections, not a universal third-party scan of the entire operating system. An app that promises a complete iPhone virus scan cannot certify the whole phone as clean.
