Before sharing an Instagram photo, check three separate things: whether Instagram location sharing is on, whether the post has a location tag, and whether the image itself contains clues that reveal where it was taken. These controls work independently, so turning off one does not automatically address the others.
What can reveal a photo’s location?

Check Instagram’s location settings before posting
- Check Map location sharing. Open Instagram’s Map feature and look for its location-sharing status indicator. Confirm the sharing choice and audience you intend, or turn sharing off if you do not want to share your location. Instagram’s labels and availability can change, so use the current in-app controls rather than relying on an older menu path. Meta’s October 6, 2025 announcement describes the indicator and opt-in sharing.
- Check the content’s location field. While creating a post, Story, or Reel, inspect any location shown or selected. Remove it or leave the field empty if the place is sensitive. Meta says adding a location tag to a post, Story, or Reel can make it populate on Map. Meta’s announcement
- Review previously shared content. If an older post or other content identifies a sensitive place, check its tag and remove it where Instagram allows. eSafety advises reviewing mapped posts near sensitive places. eSafety’s guidance
Inspect the photo file and camera settings
On iPhone or iPad
Open the image in Apple Photos and view its information to see whether a location is attached. If needed, use the location adjustment or removal control in that information view. Apple’s exact labels can vary by iOS version. Apple’s instructions for viewing and changing photo locations
To prevent future camera photos from receiving location information, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera and select Never. This changes Camera’s access to location for future capture; it does not remove Instagram tags or obscure visual clues in existing photos. Apple Support

On Android
Open the image’s details or information view in your current photo app and check whether a location is listed. Also review the Camera app’s location permission in your device settings if you want to prevent future camera geotagging. Android menus differ among devices and software versions, so follow the labels on your phone rather than assuming one universal path.

Check what the picture shows
Metadata tools cannot conceal information that is visible in the image. Before sharing, look for street names, building numbers, distinctive landmarks, school or workplace identifiers, and views that friends or followers may recognize. Cropping or choosing another image may reduce those clues; removing file metadata alone will not.

What these privacy controls do—and do not do
- Map sharing and content tags are separate. Turning off Map location sharing does not by itself remove location tags from existing posts. Check both the sharing control and the content you have already published.
- File metadata and Instagram tags are different. eSafety says Instagram removes photo location data, while a location tag is a separate label attached to content. If privacy matters, inspect the original file too—especially if you may share it through another service.
- Device permissions only address device access. Restricting Camera or app location access can affect future access to location, but it does not delete existing tags or hide a recognizable scene.
- A private account limits the audience, not the clues. It can restrict content to approved followers, but followers may still recognize a place, and private-account status does not make a sensitive location tag harmless. eSafety’s Instagram guidance
