Start with Play Protect, then review every unfamiliar app in Android’s app list and remove only software you do not recognize, trust, or authorize. Afterward, install pending Android and security updates and run Google Account Security Checkup. If suspicious behavior continues, preserve essential data and contact the phone manufacturer; Google says a reset may be necessary.
A remote-access capability is not automatically malware. It may belong to a support technician, an employer’s device-management system, an accessibility tool, or a monitoring app that was knowingly installed. The goal is to establish authorization and purpose before deleting anything, while treating persistent pop-ups, unexpected account activity, or unexplained messages as warning signs rather than proof.
What counts as a remote-access app?
“Remote-access app” describes software that can view, control, manage, or assist with a phone from another location. A family-support tool, enterprise management client, remote-help session, accessibility service, or security product may legitimately need powerful permissions. An app installed without your knowledge, or one that conceals what it is doing, deserves investigation.
Google Play policy defines a backdoor as “Code that allows the execution of unwanted, potentially harmful, remote-controlled operations on a device.” The policy is available in the Google Play Malware policy. Google also permits some monitoring apps when they disclose their monitoring function, show a persistent notification and unique icon while operating, and do not hide or cloak tracking. Those are distribution requirements for apps on Google Play, not a guarantee that every copy on a phone behaves properly.

Before removing anything, compare the app’s name and publisher with what you remember installing. Consider how it arrived: Google Play, a work administrator, a phone retailer, a family member, or an APK downloaded elsewhere. An unfamiliar name alone does not establish that an app is malicious, and a familiar name does not prove that a particular installation is safe.
Check authorization before changing a managed phone
Use the following questions as an investigation framework, not as a mathematical test. No single answer proves that an app is safe or harmful.

If the phone belongs to an employer or school, ask the administrator before uninstalling management software. Removing it can break required access or violate policy. If you fear that another person may be monitoring or retaliating against you, do not treat immediate deletion or confrontation as a universal safety step; obtain advice from a trusted, authoritative safety service that understands your circumstances.

1. Run Google Play Protect first
Play Protect is Android’s built-in app screening service. Google says it checks apps before download from Google Play and also checks apps obtained from other sources. It can warn about a potentially harmful app, disable an app until it is removed, or remove some known harmful apps. Google describes a lightweight daily automatic scan and says you can start a full device scan at any time; details are in the Android Ecosystem Security FAQs.
- Open the Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Choose Play Protect.
- Read the current scan status. Use the available Scan or equivalent control to start a scan if one is offered.
- Open Play Protect settings and make sure Scan apps with Play Protect is enabled.
- If you have installed apps from outside Google Play, enable Improve harmful app detection when that option appears.
Labels can move between Android releases and manufacturer interfaces. Use the Play Store search or Android Settings search if a label is different. A clean result means Play Protect did not identify a known potentially harmful app in that scan; it does not certify that every form of unwanted access is absent. Continue with the manual review below, especially if the phone’s behavior remains abnormal.

2. Look for warning signs without treating them as a diagnosis
Google’s malware guidance lists several possible signs: persistent pop-ups that do not belong to the apps you are using, unexpected sign-outs from accounts, unusual device behavior, and messages sent to your contacts that you did not write. These clues can have other causes, such as a buggy app, a compromised online account, a bad notification setting, or a network problem.
- Pop-ups: Note whether they appear on the home screen or over several unrelated apps, and record the wording or app attribution.
- Account activity: Check whether sign-outs, password alerts, or security notifications match actions you took.
- Messages and calls: Ask a recipient whether a message really came from you before assuming the phone itself sent it.
- Performance or battery changes: Treat unexplained heat, data use, or slowdown as a reason to investigate, not as proof of remote control.
Write down the time, app name, and exact symptom. A short record helps you distinguish a one-time glitch from a repeatable pattern and gives manufacturer support something concrete to troubleshoot.
3. Review every installed app
Start with the app list rather than searching only for names that contain “remote” or “spy.” Unwanted software may use an ordinary-sounding label, while legitimate support or management software may have a name you do not recognize.
Use Android Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, Apps & notifications, or the closest equivalent.
- Choose See all apps or open the complete installed-app list.
- Review the list alphabetically and open any app you do not recognize or no longer need.
On some phones, Settings includes a search field. Search for “apps,” “device admin,” “accessibility,” or the app’s name when menus are hard to find. System components can be unfamiliar and may be required for the phone to work, so do not delete a component merely because its name is technical.
Check identity and context
On the app’s information screen, note the icon, version, installation source if shown, storage use, recent activity, and permissions. Compare the publisher and support details with the service you intended to install. Check whether the app is associated with a work profile or an administrator. A permission such as accessibility access or device administration is powerful, but its presence alone does not prove abuse; some legitimate tools require it.

Look for disclosure in the app itself and in Android’s notification area. Google Play policy expects monitoring apps distributed through Play to disclose monitoring functionality and show a persistent notification and unique icon while running. If an app claims to monitor secretly, or its behavior contradicts its description, stop and seek support rather than assuming that a name change will solve the problem.
4. Uninstall an app you do not trust
Use the route that is available on your phone. Google documents both a Play Store method and a Settings method; menu wording differs across Android versions and manufacturers.
Play Store route
- Open Play Store and tap your profile icon.
- Tap Manage apps & devices.
- Open Manage.
- Select the app you want to remove.
- Tap Uninstall and confirm.
These labels and some related steps can vary by Android version. Google’s general instructions are in Delete apps on your Android device; that page notes that some steps apply only to Android 13 and later.
Settings route
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps & notifications or Apps.
- Choose See all apps if necessary.
- Select the app.
- Tap Uninstall, then confirm.
Google’s malware instructions show this general path as Settings > Apps & notifications > See all apps > select the app > Uninstall. The exact labels on your phone may differ. If you are unsure whether an app is required by an employer, school, accessibility setup, or another authorized service, pause and verify before confirming.
What to do when “Uninstall” is missing or disabled
A missing or disabled uninstall control does not by itself prove that software is hidden malware. Android can protect system components, and an organization can manage apps through administrator privileges. Manufacturer interfaces also place controls in different locations.

- Open the app’s information page and look for a separate Disable, Remove updates, or management notice. Do not use a control you do not understand.
- Search Settings for Device admin apps, Device administrators, Accessibility, or Work profile and identify which organization or service controls the phone.
- If it is a work or school device, contact the administrator before changing management settings.
- Use the phone manufacturer’s official support for the exact model and Android version. There is no single, universal procedure for every administrator-protected or non-removable app.
Avoid downloading an unverified “removal” utility to force deletion. Such tools can request the same powerful access you are trying to investigate and may complicate later support.
5. Install Android and security updates
After removing an app—or while you are still investigating—check for all available updates. Google recommends checking Android software updates, Android security updates, and Google Play system updates. Open Settings and search for System update, Security update, or Google Play system update; the exact locations depend on the manufacturer.
Install updates from the phone’s built-in updater, keep the phone connected to power when appropriate, and restart if prompted. An update can fix a vulnerability or a system bug, but it does not confirm that a particular app was responsible for earlier symptoms.

If an app or another person may have obtained account credentials, use a device you trust to open Google’s Security Checkup and malware guidance. Review security alerts, signed-in devices, recovery options, and third-party access, and resolve the issues Google identifies.

Can Play Protect find spyware or every remote-access app?
Play Protect can identify some known potentially harmful apps and may warn, disable, or remove them. Its documented daily scan and user-started full scan are valuable first checks, particularly for apps installed outside Google Play. However, a scan is not a universal forensic examination. A legitimate remote-support tool, a newly emerging threat, an abused account, or a configuration problem may not produce a harmful-app detection.
Use the result as one piece of evidence alongside authorization, publisher identity, installation history, permissions, notifications, account activity, and the phone’s continuing behavior. Do not promise that a “no problems found” message proves the phone is clean.
7. Escalate when symptoms continue
If pop-ups, unexpected sign-outs, unexplained messages, or other warning signs continue after the app review, updates, and account checks, Google says you may need to reset the Android device or ask the company that made it for help. The statement appears in Google’s Remove malware or unsafe software guidance.
Prepare before a reset
- Read the manufacturer’s reset instructions for your exact model; button combinations and menu names are not universal.
- Decide which photos, contacts, documents, authenticator records, and other data must be preserved, and verify that backups are current and usable.
- Make sure you know the Google Account credentials needed after a reset and understand any factory-reset protection on the phone.
- Record evidence of suspicious behavior and the names of apps or accounts involved so support can investigate.
A factory reset removes local data and settings, so do not start one casually or before considering what you need to preserve. If the phone is managed by an employer or school, coordinate with that administrator and the manufacturer rather than following a generic reset recipe.
