Start with Google Play Protect, then check for Android updates and review unfamiliar apps. These steps can identify known harmful apps and help diagnose suspicious behavior, but a clean scan cannot guarantee that every app installed by the phone’s maker is safe. If an unremovable built-in app still concerns you, contact the manufacturer or seller.
Run a Play Protect scan

Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, then tap Play Protect.

Review the scan result and settings. Make sure app scanning is enabled. If you installed apps from outside Google Play, enable improved harmful-app detection.

Run a scan if needed. Play Protect checks apps on the device, including apps from outside Google Play, and may warn about, disable, or remove detected harmful apps. Google describes its background check as a regular lightweight daily scan; you can also request a scan yourself. Google explains how Play Protect works.

A result saying Play Protect found no harmful apps is useful, but it is not proof that every factory-installed app is safe.
Check for Android and security updates
In Settings, look for options to check for Android updates, security updates, and Google Play system updates. The exact menu labels and paths vary by phone and Android version; use your manufacturer’s instructions if you cannot find them. Updates address known security issues, but installing them does not verify that a particular preinstalled app is trustworthy. Google includes update checks in its Android malware-removal guidance.

Review apps you do not recognize
In Settings, open the apps list and look for apps you do not recognize or trust. Consider whether each app is necessary and whether its permissions make sense for what it does. Remove apps you do not need when Android allows it.

Some apps bundled by a phone maker or carrier cannot be uninstalled. An unfamiliar name alone is not evidence that an app is malicious.

Do not remove or disable a core system component solely because you do not recognize it; doing so can break device functions.

If a built-in app seems suspicious and cannot be removed, ask the phone maker or seller to identify it and explain its purpose.

Android’s developer guidance treats preinstalled apps as part of the security threat model: it recommends that device makers scan them for potentially harmful applications and limit them to necessary permissions. That is a recommendation for manufacturers, not a consumer-facing test that certifies each app on your phone. Read Android’s app security best practices.

Possible warning signs include persistent pop-up ads, unexpected virus alerts, unusual slowness, unexplained storage loss, device malfunctions, browser redirects or changed settings, antivirus software that stops working, and messages sent from your accounts. These signs can also have ordinary explanations, such as browser notifications, software faults, or a failing device; none by itself proves malware.

Check where an alert came from. A web page claiming that your phone is infected is not the same as a Play Protect warning. If you see messages you did not send or other suspicious account activity, review your Google Account security as part of the response. Google lists these symptoms and account checks in its Android guidance.
Use safe mode to check for downloaded-app problems
Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If the symptoms stop in safe mode, Google says a downloaded app is likely causing the problem. Remove recent downloads one at a time, restarting normally and checking whether the issue returns after each removal.
How you enter and leave safe mode varies by manufacturer and phone model, so follow your maker’s instructions. Safe mode helps isolate problems caused by downloaded apps; it is not a malware scan and does not certify preinstalled apps. See Google’s instructions for finding problem apps with safe mode.
Know what Play Protect certification does—and does not—mean
Certification is separate from a malware scan. A Play Protect-certified device has passed Google’s compatibility testing and is eligible to include licensed Google apps; certification does not mean Play Protect scanned the phone and found it clean. Google says uncertified devices may not receive Android or app updates and may not be secure. You can check a device’s status in the Play Store under Settings and About, then consult the maker if it is not certified. Google explains how to check certification status.
Escalate if the concern persists
If suspicious behavior continues after checking apps and updates, contact the phone’s manufacturer. A factory reset may be necessary, but it erases device data, so back up essential information and follow the manufacturer’s reset instructions. Google’s guidance says that persistent malware signs may require a reset or help from the company that made the device.
