Before signing in to a used Android phone, check it in three layers: inspect the chassis without an account, verify the boot chain and bootloader state without unlocking anything, then review Play Protect, certification and update status. Treat any unexplained failure as a reason to stop setup and preserve evidence.
What this inspection can—and cannot—tell you
“Hardware tampering” can mean several different things: a phone may have been opened and reassembled, repaired with non-original parts, had its storage or modem replaced, or been modified together with its boot software. No single Android screen can detect all of those conditions.
Android’s official security specifications concentrate on the boot chain, verified boot, attestation and application safety. They do not provide a universal consumer test that proves every screw, chip, seal or interposer is original. The checks below therefore produce evidence and risk indicators, not an absolute guarantee.

For a phone that will hold high-value credentials, enterprise access or sensitive investigative material, consumer checks are not a substitute for the manufacturer’s or an authorized service center’s inspection and a documented chain of custody.

Prepare an evidence-preserving inspection
Do the first inspection before putting your accounts, payment details or work profile on the phone. You want to record the device as received, not after a reset, update or attempted repair changes its condition.
- Keep the phone offline initially. Do not sign in to Google, work, banking or messaging accounts while you are still deciding whether the device is trustworthy.
- Photograph the condition. Take clear pictures of the front, rear, every edge, camera glass, screws, SIM tray and any warning screen. Include close-ups of scratches, gaps, adhesive residue and damaged seals.
- Record identity details. Write down the model, serial number, IMEI, build number when available, and the seller’s description of the phone’s history. Compare those details with the label, packaging or sale listing, but treat the seller’s description as a claim rather than proof.
- Do not perform an unlock test. Do not enable OEM unlocking, issue an unlock command or flash software merely to see what happens. Unlocking changes the security state and normally erases user data.
- Keep the original evidence. Save photographs and notes before returning the phone, requesting a refund or allowing a repair shop to open it.
Layer 1: inspect the physical phone before account setup
Check the frame and display fit
Examine the frame under bright, even light. Look for a display that sits higher on one side, an uneven bezel, a panel that does not follow the frame consistently, bent metal or a color and texture that do not match the rest of the phone. A replaced display can be genuine and professionally installed, so a visual difference is a lead to investigate, not proof of malicious tampering.
Run a finger around the perimeter without pressing hard. A seam that changes width, a corner that lifts, or adhesive visible where the display meets the frame suggests that the phone may have been opened. Record the location rather than trying to reseat the panel yourself.
Inspect the rear cover and camera area
Look for a rear cover that is not flush, fresh adhesive lines, fingerprints or dust trapped under a camera window, and a camera glass piece whose color or coating differs from the other lenses. Check that the cover’s texture and color match the frame. A replacement back can result from an ordinary repair, but it matters when the seller described the phone as unopened or original.
Examine screws, seams and seals
Use the camera on another device if necessary to photograph screw heads and small gaps. Disturbed screw heads, nonstandard fasteners, missing covers, torn seals, tool marks or adhesive that looks newer than the rest of the phone are physical risk indicators. Compare left and right sides and inspect every corner; one clean side does not cancel a disturbed side.

Test ports, tray and buttons for mechanical abnormalities
Insert the correct cable only far enough to confirm that the port feels mechanically normal. A loose, misaligned or unusually tight port can indicate damage or replacement. Inspect the SIM tray for a bent edge, a different finish or a seal that no longer fits. Press each button once and compare its travel and resistance with the other buttons. Do not force a tray, scrape adhesive or remove a cover as part of a consumer check.
Compare the physical model with the software identity
After the exterior inspection, compare the model shown in Android settings with the model you can identify from the chassis and the seller’s description. Record the serial number and IMEI displayed by the phone. A mismatch, an identity that changes between screens, or a device whose software claims a different model is a stop signal until an authorized service provider explains it.

Layer 2: verify the boot chain without unlocking anything
Read startup warnings before dismissing them
Power the phone on normally and read every warning instead of tapping through it. A message about an unlocked bootloader, failed verified boot, an untrusted operating system or a custom recovery deserves the same treatment as a physical gap: stop, photograph the screen and do not enter credentials.
Manufacturers place these messages in different screens and use different wording. The important point is whether the device itself reports that its trust state is not normal for a retail phone.

Understand the LOCKED and UNLOCKED states
Android’s compatibility requirements call for tamper-evident storage of bootloader state, physical confirmation for a lock-to-unlock transition, rollback protection and secure erasure during state changes. The Android Open Source Project documents that the bootloader reports a LOCKED or UNLOCKED state.
Check the state using the manufacturer’s normal information screen or the bootloader information screen, if the device exposes one. Merely viewing the state is different from changing it. An unexpected UNLOCKED state on a phone sold as stock is a stop signal. Do not attempt to “fix” it by locking the bootloader yourself: the documented state-transition command is fastboot flashing [unlock | lock], and state transitions wipe data partitions and ask for confirmation before deletion.
Look for custom recovery or failed verified boot
A recovery environment that is clearly not the manufacturer’s, a screen that says verification failed, or an operating-system warning that persists after a normal restart indicates that the expected boot chain may not be intact. Do not flash a factory image, install a new recovery or accept a seller’s suggestion to unlock first. Those actions can destroy evidence, trigger a wipe or alter the very state you are trying to assess.
Preserve the warning with photographs, note the exact wording and contact the seller or an authorized service provider. If the phone contains someone else’s data, do not browse through it while collecting evidence.
Interpret Play Integrity on supported Android versions
On Android 13 and higher, the MEETS_DEVICE_INTEGRITY verdict includes hardware-backed proof that the bootloader is locked and that the loaded operating system is a certified device-manufacturer image. MEETS_STRONG_INTEGRITY adds a recent-security-update requirement for all relevant partitions.

These verdicts are normally consumed by apps and services rather than shown as a universal phone setting. Report a pass only when a trusted diagnostic actually displays the verdict for that device. An app opening normally, passing a login screen or showing a generic “secure” label is not proof that either verdict was issued. Availability and exact verdicts depend on Android version, device support and the service requesting the check.

Review Play Protect certification
In the Google Play Store, open your profile menu, choose Settings, then About, and review the Play Protect certification status. Menu names can vary slightly by Play Store release and manufacturer skin, so use the Settings search field if the item is not visible.
A device reported as not certified should not be treated as a normal stock phone until the seller or an authorized service provider can explain it. Certification is a software and device-compatibility signal; it does not certify that the chassis, storage, modem or camera modules are original.
Run the Play Protect scan
Open the Play Store profile menu, choose Play Protect, and start a scan. Google describes Play Protect as a service that automatically scans Android applications and works to prevent harmful installations; its screen also lets you view the last scan and the applications examined.
Record the result and any detected package name. A harmful-app detection is a reason to stop setup and investigate rather than simply dismissing the notification. A clean scan lowers the risk of known harmful applications, but it is not a forensic examination of hardware or a guarantee that an altered system has never been present.

Record update and build information
Open the phone’s Settings search and look for Android security update, Google Play system update and Build number. Depending on the manufacturer, these items may appear under About phone, Android version or Security and privacy. Record:
- Android security-patch date.
- Google Play system-update date, where the phone displays one.
- Build number and Android version.
- Model, serial number and IMEI.
- Any update error, warning or message that the device is unsupported.
An implausibly old patch, a failed update that the seller cannot explain, or a build identity that does not fit the physical model is a reason to stop. A recent patch reduces exposure to known vulnerabilities, but it cannot establish that the phone was never opened. Patch age is one maintenance signal, not a substitute for the physical and boot-chain checks.
How to decide what to do with the results

Evaluate the four axes independently. A clean result on one axis never cancels a failure on another: Play Protect cannot clear a disturbed chassis, and a perfect exterior cannot clear an unlocked bootloader.

- Stop account setup. Do not enter passwords, recovery codes, payment details or enterprise credentials while the finding is unresolved.
- Preserve the state. Photograph warnings, record dates and copy down the exact model, serial number, IMEI, build and patch information. Avoid actions that wipe data or change the boot state.
- Contact the seller in writing. Describe the observed condition and attach only the evidence needed to establish the issue. Ask for the repair history, an explanation of the software state or a return under the sale terms.
- Use an authorized service channel for technical verification. A service provider can determine whether a part was replaced or whether a boot warning has a documented cause. Request written findings if the phone will be used for work or investigations.
- Escalate high-consequence cases. For devices intended to protect valuable credentials, enterprise access or sensitive investigations, require an authorized inspection and documented chain of custody rather than relying on a seller’s verbal assurance.
When it is reasonable to begin using the phone
Only begin normal account setup after the physical condition, boot state, software health and maintenance state are consistent with what you were promised. Keep your inspection record so you can distinguish a later repair or warning from the condition in which the phone arrived.
If you later see a new verified-boot warning, an unexpected bootloader state, a certification failure or a harmful-app detection, treat it as a new incident. Do not assume that an earlier clean scan proves the device remains unchanged.
