Check the exact spot trading pair on the venue you will use, not the coin’s headline volume. For your intended order size, inspect recent completed activity, the bid–ask spread, cumulative order-book depth, and estimated slippage. Then check the sell side as well, separate trading fees from market impact, and refresh the book immediately before submitting an order. A tight top quote or large reported volume is not proof that a larger order can be filled at a reasonable average price.
Liquidity belongs to a specific market
In practical terms, liquidity is the ability to buy or sell an asset without moving its price substantially. It is not a permanent characteristic of an altcoin’s ticker. Crypto liquidity is fragmented among venues and pairs, so the same asset can have different prices, spreads, available quantities, and execution costs in different markets. S&P Global’s framework treats volume, spread, depth, and slippage as separate liquidity measures; its analysis covers selected markets and a historical period, not a live rating for every token. Read the framework at S&P Global.
This guide is for a contemplated spot purchase. Select the exact asset, quote currency, exchange, and pair you would actually trade. An aggregate figure for all venues, or a chart showing a different pair, cannot tell you how your order will execute on your chosen book.

Liquidity is relative to the order you plan to place. Write down these inputs before looking for a pass or fail:

Without a defined size, “liquid” has no useful meaning. A book may handle a small purchase near the best quote while forcing a much larger order through many increasingly expensive levels.
Use four signals together
1. Recent completed activity
Trading volume and transaction activity show what has actually changed hands during a period. Use them as context for whether the market is active, but do not treat them as currently executable inventory. Reported volume can be inflated by wash trading; Kraken explains why volume alone can mislead and discusses other dimensions such as spread, depth, stability, imbalance, fees, and price dispersion.
Look at the activity for the exact pair and venue. Compare the recent trade flow with the quantities visible in the book. A high number beside the ticker is less persuasive when the current book contains little quantity near the market price or when activity appears in short, concentrated bursts. Completed trades also do not guarantee that the same liquidity will remain when you submit your order.
2. The bid–ask spread
The best bid is the highest displayed buy price. The best ask is the lowest displayed sell price. Their difference is the quoted spread. For a comparable measure across markets, calculate the midpoint and express the spread relative to it:
midpoint = (best bid + best ask) / 2relative spread = (best ask − best bid) / midpoint
A buyer crossing the spread with a market order normally pays at least the ask rather than the midpoint; a seller crossing it normally receives the bid. The spread therefore contributes to the cost of an immediate round trip, before trading fees. A narrow spread is useful evidence only when enough quantity is available at and near those quotes.
3. Cumulative order-book depth
An order book lists displayed limit orders by price and quantity. To test a buy, start at the lowest ask and add the quantities at successive ask levels until you reach your intended amount. To test an exit, perform the same exercise down the bid side. The KTX order-book guide describes this cumulative-depth approach and why larger orders consume multiple levels.
Record how much is available within a price band you can tolerate, not just at the first level. For a buy, calculate the weighted average of the asks your order would consume; for a sell, calculate the weighted average of the bids. Compare that average with the starting quote or midpoint. Check both sides: a purchase that is easy to enter may still be difficult to unwind.

Displayed depth is a snapshot, not a commitment. Orders can be filled, edited, or cancelled. A large bid or ask wall may disappear before your order reaches it, so do not treat a wall as guaranteed support or resistance.
4. Estimated slippage and price impact
Slippage is the difference between the price you expected and the price you actually receive. Before buying, estimate it by walking the asks for your full size and comparing the resulting weighted-average fill with your reference price. Use the midpoint when you want a neutral market reference, or the best ask when you want to measure impact beyond the immediately available offer.
Keep three costs separate:
- Quoted spread: the gap between the best bid and best ask.
- Price impact or book slippage: the deterioration caused by consuming successive levels for your order size.
- Trading fee: the venue’s charge, which is applied according to its fee schedule and order type.
Coinbase’s explanation of spread and slippage and Binance.US’s explanation of price impact both distinguish the expected quote from the eventual execution. Low activity or shallow liquidity can increase slippage. Neither platform’s particular controls should be assumed to apply to another venue.

A repeatable liquidity check
- Open the actual market. Confirm the asset, quote currency, venue, and spot pair. Do not substitute a global or cross-venue volume figure for the book where your order will execute.
- Fix the order size. Enter the amount you would really buy, and write down the amount you might later sell. Test the larger of the two if you want a conservative check.
- Timestamp your observation. Record when you read the book and recent trades. Market conditions can change between analysis and submission.
- Review completed activity. Check recent volume and trade flow for that pair. Treat the result as context, and look for a mismatch between reported activity and the quantities that are actually displayed.
- Capture the best bid and ask. Compute the midpoint and relative spread. Note whether the quote changes or widens while you watch it.
- Walk the depth. Add ask quantities level by level for the purchase and bid quantities for the planned exit. Stop at your full size and record the worst price and weighted average.
- Estimate the all-in execution. Compare the weighted-average fill with your chosen reference price, then add the applicable trading fee separately. This is an estimate, not a promise: visible orders can be cancelled or replaced.
- Choose an order type and recheck. Refresh the book immediately before placing the order. If the spread, depth, or estimated cost has changed beyond your tolerance, reduce the size, choose a different market, postpone the trade, or do not trade.
Calculate a weighted-average fill
Suppose your buy consumes quantities q1, q2, …, qn at ask prices p1, p2, …, pn. The estimated average fill is:
average buy price = (p1 × q1 + p2 × q2 + … + pn × qn) / (q1 + q2 + … + qn)
For a sell, use the bid prices and quantities in the same way. A simple impact estimate against the midpoint is:
estimated impact = (average fill − midpoint) / midpoint

Read the book in context
Do not inspect only a single screenshot. Watch whether the best quotes remain in place while you review them, whether quantities refill after trades, and whether the spread repeatedly widens. A stable-looking book that changes dramatically from one observation to the next offers less dependable liquidity than a similarly sized book whose quotes persist. Kraken identifies stability as a liquidity dimension, particularly in volatile conditions.
Also distinguish displayed quantity from executed quantity. A large order at one level may be genuine, but it may also be cancelled or moved. Conversely, several smaller orders spread across nearby prices can provide more usable depth than one prominent wall. The order book reveals displayed intentions, not every participant’s plans, and it cannot by itself indicate where price will go.
Entry liquidity and exit liquidity are different tests
A buy consumes asks, while an exit consumes bids. A market can therefore look attractive from the entry side and still expose you to substantial liquidation cost. Repeat the same cumulative-depth and weighted-average calculation for the amount you might sell. If the bid side is much thinner, use that side when setting your personal cost limit.

Consider the quote currency as well. A pair quoted in one currency may show a different nominal price and activity pattern from a pair quoted in another. Compare relative spread, quantities converted into the same value basis, and the fee schedule rather than comparing raw token units or headline volume.
Choose between market and limit orders deliberately
| Order type | What it prioritizes | Main liquidity risk | Possible fill outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market order | Immediate execution | It can consume several levels and incur price impact when depth is thin or conditions move. | The order may fill, but the final average price is not fixed in advance. |
| Limit order | A maximum buy price or minimum sell price | The market may never reach your limit, or the visible quantity at that price may be insufficient. | It can fill partially or remain completely unfilled. |
Binance.US documents the market-versus-limit trade-off, and KTX explains how displayed levels affect execution. A limit order controls the acceptable price condition but not execution certainty. A market order emphasizes completion but not the eventual price. Neither order type guarantees a desirable result in a fast or shallow market.
Compare two venues or pairs at the same moment
If the same altcoin is available in more than one market, compare like with like: use the same order size, the same side of the book, and observations taken as close together as possible. Fragmentation means the venue with the largest headline volume is not automatically the venue with the best execution for your trade.
| Comparison | What to record | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Relative spread | Best bid, best ask, midpoint, and spread relative to midpoint | A smaller spread generally reduces the cost of crossing the market, provided adequate quantity is present. |
| Near-market depth | Cumulative bid and ask quantities through the price levels your order would consume | More usable depth can support a larger order with less price impact; inspect both entry and exit sides. |
| Estimated execution | Weighted-average fill and impact for the identical proposed size | This is more decision-relevant than comparing tickers or top quotes alone. |
| Recent activity | Completed trades, volume, and whether activity is concentrated | Use it as context and test whether reported activity corresponds to executable quantities. |
| Fees and order behavior | Applicable fee and whether market or limit orders receive the behavior you require | A superficially cheaper quote can lose its advantage after fees or an unfilled limit order. |
| Stability and imbalance | How quickly quotes change and whether one side is much deeper than the other | An unstable or one-sided book can make a displayed advantage disappear during execution. |
How to compare reported volume with the book
Volume is a measure of completed transactions over a chosen period; depth is the quantity currently displayed near the price. They answer different questions. A market can report substantial activity while offering little near-price depth at the moment you need to trade. Conversely, a quiet period can leave a reasonably deep book that has not yet turned over much.
Check whether recent trades are distributed through the period or concentrated in a few bursts. Look at the size and frequency of trades, then compare those observations with the quantities available at successive levels. This does not prove that volume is genuine, but it helps identify a mismatch that deserves caution. Because wash trading can inflate reported volume, executable quotes and your own estimated fill should carry more weight than a ranking by volume alone.

Red flags that deserve a second look
- High volume with little nearby quantity: completed activity does not match the depth available for your order.
- A tight spread only at the first level: the next levels are far away, so your full order would have a poor weighted average.
- One-sided depth: buying appears easy, but the bid side cannot support a comparable exit.
- A large wall that vanishes: the displayed order was changed or cancelled before execution.
- Rapidly widening quotes: the snapshot is becoming stale as you analyze it.
- Different prices across venues: the apparent discount may reflect weaker depth, higher fees, or a different quote currency rather than a free opportunity.
- Activity in isolated bursts: volume may not represent a continuously executable market; investigate the book and trade distribution.
Do not infer price direction from order-book depth alone. The KTX guide, updated September 28, 2026, states that an order book shows only currently displayed limit orders and that orders can be filled, changed, or cancelled; it cannot predict price direction by itself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set a personal decision rule, not a universal threshold
There is no spread, depth, or slippage number that makes every altcoin liquid enough. Acceptable cost depends on the exact pair, venue, order size, market conditions, fees, urgency, and your tolerance for execution risk. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal benchmark.
Before trading, choose limits that fit your strategy: a maximum relative spread, a maximum estimated impact for the full order, and a minimum amount of usable depth on both sides. Apply the same rule when comparing venues. If a market fails it, practical responses include reducing the order, waiting for a more stable book, using a carefully priced limit order, or choosing another pair or venue. Reducing size can lower impact but cannot remove volatility or execution risk.
A simple worksheet for the decision
Put the observations in one table rather than relying on memory. Record the pair and venue, observation time, intended buy size, possible exit size, best bid, best ask, midpoint, relative spread, each price level consumed, cumulative quantity, weighted-average buy and sell prices, estimated impact, and the applicable fee. Mark whether the quote changed while you were collecting the data. This makes two markets comparable and exposes an assumption such as using a small displayed quantity to justify a much larger order.
When the order is large relative to nearby depth, test smaller slices as well as the complete order. The result can show how much the estimated average improves when size is reduced, but it does not guarantee that separate orders will receive the same prices. Each slice is exposed to a new market snapshot, and visible liquidity may change between submissions.
Record the decision and recheck at submission
Keep a short record so you can see whether the market changed while you were deciding:
- Exact asset, quote currency, venue, and pair
- Observation time and intended buy and exit sizes
- Best bid, best ask, midpoint, and relative spread
- Cumulative quantities and price levels used in the weighted-average calculation
- Estimated impact, venue fee, and estimated all-in cost
- Selected order type and its price condition, if applicable
Refresh the live book after making that record and immediately before submission. If the quantities or prices no longer support the calculation, make a new estimate rather than relying on the earlier snapshot. Liquidity is a changing market condition, not a permanent property of the coin.

How deep should an altcoin order book be before I buy?
There is no universal depth threshold. Compare cumulative asks with your purchase size and cumulative bids with the amount you may sell. Decide what weighted-average impact and total cost you can tolerate.
How can I estimate slippage before placing a buy?
Add the displayed ask quantities level by level until they cover your intended size, calculate the weighted-average ask price, and compare it with the midpoint or best ask. Add the trading fee separately.
Is a tight bid-ask spread proof that a market is liquid?
No. A tight spread at the first quote may conceal very little quantity. Walk through the next price levels and test the weighted-average fill for the full order.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchShould I use a market order or a limit order for a thin altcoin?
A market order prioritizes completion but can consume several levels and has no fixed final average price. A limit order sets a price condition but may fill partially or not at all. Choose based on your urgency and cost tolerance, then recheck the book.
Can I rely on a large order-book wall as support?
No. Displayed orders can be filled, changed, or cancelled. Treat a wall as a temporary snapshot, not guaranteed liquidity or a prediction of price direction.
Why can the same altcoin look liquid on one exchange and illiquid on another?
Liquidity is fragmented by venue and pair. Each market has its own participants, spread, depth, fees, and stability, so compare the exact books at nearly the same time.
The Bottom Line
Judge an altcoin’s liquidity at the exact venue and pair you will trade. For your actual order and possible exit, combine recent activity with relative spread, cumulative depth, weighted-average execution and separate fees. Recheck the changing book immediately before choosing a market or submitting an order; volume and a tight top quote alone are not enough.
