Check the page as it actually appears and works in a browser—not only the AI-generated mock-up or template. Start with W3C’s preliminary checks for titles, images, headings, contrast, resizing, keyboard use, forms, motion, media, and page structure. Then combine an accessibility checker with hands-on review of important controls and representative generated pages. A clean scan is not proof of accessibility: W3C says knowledgeable human evaluation is required to determine whether a site is accessible.
Use WCAG 2.2 as the reference point for your review. It became a W3C Recommendation on 5 October 2023, but the appropriate conformance level and any legal obligations depend on the project and its context. W3C does not establish a special accessibility certification for AI-generated layouts; the relevant question is whether the resulting web pages and interactions meet the requirements that apply to them.
What an accessibility check can—and cannot—tell you
An AI-generated website layout should be reviewed like any other web interface: inspect the rendered pages, test the interactions, and compare what you observe with an accessibility standard. The fact that a layout was generated by AI does not make it accessible or inaccessible by itself. W3C’s guidance concerns websites and their content, rather than a separate class of AI-generated sites.
WCAG 2.2 is the W3C guideline reference used here. W3C announced WCAG 2.2 as a Recommendation on 5 October 2023. Which conformance level to target depends on the site’s requirements; a project title or the use of an AI generator does not establish that level. If you are working to a legal, organizational, or client requirement, record the specific target before evaluating.

A first-pass review can uncover visible and functional barriers, but it is not a complete audit. W3C describes its Easy Checks as a preliminary first review, and notes that evaluation tools cannot determine accessibility on their own. Use automated findings as leads to investigate, not as a verdict. W3C’s evaluation overview says, “Knowledgeable human evaluation is required to determine if a site is accessible.” See W3C’s overview of evaluating web accessibility and its Easy Checks for a first review.
Set the scope before you start
A review is useful only if it is clear what was reviewed. Before checking anything, write down the target page or user journey, the intended conformance level if one has been specified, and the browser and device context. Note which parts of the page came from the generator and which were subsequently changed by a person. That distinction helps you locate where a problem entered the workflow, but it does not change whether the final page needs to be accessible.
For a single landing page, the scope might be the rendered page and the controls it contains. For a larger site, include representative pages and interactions rather than assuming that one template covers every output. W3C’s WCAG Evaluation Methodology (WCAG-EM) organizes a conformance evaluation around defining scope, exploring the product, selecting a representative sample, evaluating it, and reporting the results. W3C says WCAG-EM 2 was published on 23 July 2026. Its WCAG-EM overview is a useful structure for a broader evaluation.

- Target: Record the conformance level or other requirement if the project has specified one; do not assume it from the use of AI.
- Context: Note the browser and device used, and the version of the rendered page.
- Generated output: Record what the generator supplied and what was edited afterward.
- Coverage: State whether you checked one page, a sample, or the complete set in scope.
Inspect the rendered page, not just the design preview
A mock-up can suggest what a page will look like, but it cannot show whether the delivered page has meaningful text alternatives, a usable keyboard sequence, working form feedback, or accessible interactive states. Open the actual page in a browser and try its controls. Review the page at its normal rendered size and while resizing the text or view, since the real output—not the design intention—is what visitors encounter.

Include states that are easy to miss in a static preview: a menu after it is opened, a form after submission, any validation or error state, and any content that appears or changes in response to a control. If the layout is populated with generated or dynamic content, examine that content too. W3C cautions that evaluating templates alone is insufficient for dynamically generated pages: the generated content may itself contain, or need, accessible markup. The relevant guidance is in W3C’s evaluation approaches for specific contexts.
Run these first-pass checks
W3C’s Easy Checks provide a practical starting list. Treat each item as an opportunity to find a problem, not as a complete conformance test. Record what you saw and where; do not mark a page accessible merely because these preliminary checks did not reveal an issue.
Page title and structure
- Page title: Check whether the page has a title that identifies it meaningfully. A generic or missing title makes it harder to distinguish pages, especially when multiple tabs are open.
- Headings: Review whether the visible content is organized with a meaningful heading structure. A visually prominent line is not enough if the underlying page structure does not identify it as a heading.
- Basic structure: Check that the page’s content and controls have a coherent structure, rather than relying only on visual placement to communicate how pieces relate.
Images and other non-text content
Look at each meaningful image and ask what information or purpose it contributes. Check that its text alternative communicates that purpose. Decorative imagery and informative imagery do not serve the same role, so a repeated filename or an unhelpful generic description should not be treated as a meaningful alternative. A person needs to judge whether the alternative is useful in context; an automated checker may flag missing text but cannot reliably decide whether supplied wording conveys the image’s meaning.

Text contrast and resizing
Check whether text remains distinguishable from its background and whether it stays usable when the text or view is resized. A polished color palette or a visual design preview does not establish that the rendered text is legible. Look at the actual combinations used across the page, including text inside buttons or other components, and note any content that becomes difficult to read or use after resizing. These are preliminary observations; a full conformance evaluation may require more than a visual first pass.

Keyboard access and visible focus
Move through the page using a keyboard interface and try the important controls without relying on a pointer. Check whether each important function is available and whether you can tell which element currently has focus as you navigate. If focus disappears, is difficult to see, or moves in a way that makes the page hard to follow, record the control and sequence where it happens.
W3C’s guidance calls for functionality to be operable through a keyboard interface and for visible focus to be followed while navigating. Its technique G202: Ensuring keyboard control for all functionality provides related guidance. A keyboard pass is a practical check, not proof that every interaction is accessible.
Forms and errors
If the page has a form, check whether each field has a clear label and whether a person can understand what information belongs there. Try submitting the form in a way that produces an error, if that state is available. Look for feedback that identifies the problem and helps the person understand what needs attention. Do not stop at a screenshot of the empty form: labels and error handling are only fully observable when the form is used.

Motion, blinking content, and media
Look for content that moves or blinks and for audio or video that may need alternatives. Note where it appears and whether the page provides an appropriate way to access the information without relying on the media alone. The first-pass check is to identify the moving or multimedia content and investigate its alternatives; the presence of a media player or a decorative animation does not, by itself, show that the content is accessible.

Use an accessibility checker as an assistant, not a certificate
Automated and semi-automated tools can help surface candidate issues, but their coverage and conclusions are limited. Some accessibility aspects cannot be checked automatically, and tool results can be misleading. A checker may identify a missing attribute while being unable to judge whether the replacement text is meaningful; conversely, a page may have problems that a scan does not report.
Choose a tool according to what you need it to inspect: a scan can help surface issues in page markup, while other approaches may support manual evaluation. Make sure the pages or components you care about are actually in scope for the tool. Then confirm each finding in the browser and record whether it is a genuine barrier, a false positive, or a question that needs further review. W3C’s guidance is explicit: “Web accessibility evaluation tools can not determine accessibility, they can only assist in doing so.” Read W3C’s guidance on selecting web accessibility evaluation tools before interpreting a tool’s output.
| Approach | What it is useful for | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Automated scan | Surfacing candidate issues in the pages or components the tool can inspect. | Whether every accessibility requirement is met, or whether a flagged issue is always a real barrier. |
| Tool-assisted manual review | Guiding a person through checks that need interaction or contextual judgment. | Conformance by itself; the person still needs to inspect the page and interpret what happens. |
| Experienced human evaluation | Assessing issues that depend on meaning, context, and actual use of the site. | Coverage of pages or states that were not included in the agreed scope and sample. |
These approaches work best together. A high score, a short list of warnings, or no reported errors is evidence only about the particular checks performed; it is not a site-wide accessibility conclusion.
Test important interactions with a keyboard
A keyboard review is especially useful for generated layouts because visual arrangements can hide whether the interactive page works without pointer input. Set aside the mouse or trackpad and navigate through the page, testing the functions a visitor needs rather than only moving focus across decorative elements.

- Start at the beginning of the page. Use the keyboard to move through the available controls in sequence. Observe where focus appears and whether the sequence is understandable.
- Try each important control. Test links, buttons, menus, form fields, and other controls that perform a task. Confirm that the functionality can be reached and operated through a keyboard interface.
- Follow the visible focus. Keep track of the focused element as you move. Record controls where focus is hard to see or where its movement makes the current position unclear.
- Exercise relevant states. Open menus, reveal content, and use any interaction that changes the page. Check that the resulting content and controls remain usable in the keyboard sequence.
- Write down the failure precisely. Note the page, control, action, and result. “Keyboard issue” is less useful to a developer than a reproducible description of where navigation or operation failed.
W3C’s related technique is G202: Ensuring keyboard control for all functionality. A keyboard check should complement, not replace, review of the other areas in the preliminary checklist.
Sample generated pages and content variations
AI-generated site work often involves a layout that is reused while content changes. A template may be consistent, yet a page populated with different headings, images, forms, or media may introduce a new issue. For that reason, checking only the template does not establish that all generated pages are accessible.
For a larger site, select representative pages or content variations that reflect what the system actually produces. Include the pages and states most relevant to the site’s important tasks, and make the scope explicit in your notes. W3C’s WCAG-EM process includes representative sampling; its advice on context also calls out the need to consider generated content. The appropriate sample depends on the site and evaluation goal, so there is no universal number of pages established here.
Record findings so they can be acted on
A useful review leaves behind more than a score. Document the scope and method so another person can understand what was tested, reproduce a finding, and see what remains outside the review. W3C’s accessibility evaluation report template says that a conformance review combines semi-automated tools with manual evaluation by an experienced reviewer.
- Scope and target: List the pages, user flows, conformance goal if specified, and browser or device context.
- Sample: Identify the pages and generated content variations reviewed, and explain the scope of the sample.
- Method: Record the tools or manual checks used, including the keyboard and interaction checks performed.
- Findings: Describe the page or component, the steps to reproduce the issue, and the observed result.
- Unreviewed areas: Clearly identify pages, content, or states that were not checked rather than implying that they passed.
For a structured conformance evaluation, use the five WCAG-EM stages—scope, exploration, sampling, evaluation, and reporting—as the organizing framework. A brief first review can still document its narrower scope without presenting itself as a complete conformance assessment.
How to decide what to do next
If a preliminary check reveals a barrier, pass the finding to the person responsible for the page and verify the result after changes are made. If the initial checks reveal nothing, do not treat that as a reason to stop when the site has a defined conformance obligation or important interactive flows. Expand the review to the relevant pages and states, combine tool support with manual evaluation, and make the boundaries of the assessment clear.
The key distinction is between finding no issue in the checks you performed and establishing that a site conforms. W3C guidance supports the first-pass checklist as a way to spot common problems and evaluation tools as assistance; neither is a substitute for a properly scoped human review of the pages and interactions that matter.
