Use an AI itinerary as a planning draft, never as a booking record. Before you pay or rely on a safety or entry claim, verify each flight, train, bus, ferry, hotel, attraction, transfer and policy on the current website of the operating provider or the relevant government authority. Record the page and the time you checked it: prices, availability, schedules and rules can change after the itinerary was generated.
Why an AI itinerary can look right and still be wrong
Generative AI produces fluent text, not a guaranteed live reservation search. It may combine old schedules, incomplete source data and plausible-sounding details into an itinerary that has never existed as a bookable trip. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Smartraveller service warns that AI “doesn’t verify” the information it gives and that output may be “inaccurate, incomplete or out of date.” The Government of Canada gives a similar warning: generated content can look credible while being inaccurate, nonsensical or inconsistent with source data, so users should not treat it as authoritative.
Typical travel errors
- A flight or public-transport departure time is from an old timetable.
- A marketing airline is named even though a different airline operates the flight.
- A hotel has closed, is unavailable for the requested dates or has a different room policy.
- An attraction is seasonal, sold out or no longer operating.
- A visa, border, vaccination, customs or local-law statement applies to a different nationality or date.
- A quoted price omits taxes, mandatory fees, baggage, seat selection, deposits or service charges.
- A cancellation rule is summarized without the deadline, no-show condition or refund method.
How common is AI-assisted travel planning?
Smartraveller reports that, in Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade research for 2026, 30% of Gen Z travellers used AI to plan overseas trips. The same research found that 28% used AI for visa and entry information, 27% for safety advice and 19% for local laws and customs. Although 82% were likely to cross-check information supplied by AI, that leaves a substantial group at risk of acting on an unchecked answer. These percentages describe the surveyed Australian population, not all travellers worldwide.

Start with a claim-by-claim verification ledger
Do not try to validate an entire paragraph at once. Convert the itinerary into individual claims, then mark each claim unverified until a live, authoritative page confirms it. A spreadsheet, notes app or printed checklist works.
One row for every bookable or consequential item
- Create a row for each flight leg, train, bus, ferry, hotel night, attraction, airport transfer and policy statement.
- Copy the provider or property name exactly as shown by the AI, including the service number or room type.
- Enter the origin, destination, local date, local departure and arrival times, and the time zone for each location.
- Record the assumptions: passenger ages and count, room occupancy, cabin or fare class, luggage, currency and requested dates.
- Write down the AI’s quoted total, what it says is included, the cancellation deadline and any stated conditions.
- Add a source column and leave the status as unverified until a current provider or government page supports the claim.

Verify prices from the seller’s live booking flow
An AI number is an estimate, not a locked fare. Re-run the exact search with the same dates, travellers, route, cabin or room type and currency. Continue far enough to see the amount that the seller would actually charge, without assuming that the first search result is the final total.

- Open the operating airline’s current booking flow.
- Enter the exact origin and destination, travel dates, passenger count and passenger types used in the itinerary.
- Select the same cabin and fare family, not merely the same flight number.
- Compare the displayed total with the AI amount and note the search and checkout times.
- Open the baggage, seat, change and cancellation details before payment. Record each charge separately from the base fare.
- Confirm that taxes, government fees and mandatory carrier surcharges are included in the advertised total. In the United States, Department of Transportation rules require advertised airfares to show that total price.
A price can change between the search page and checkout because inventory or currency conversion changed. Record both values if that happens; the AI figure is not a price guarantee.

Lodging check
- Search the property’s own booking page or the booking channel that will take your payment.
- Match the check-in and check-out dates, number of guests, room type, meal plan and cancellation option.
- Advance to the final price page and identify mandatory resort, destination, cleaning and service fees, plus taxes and deposits.
- Compare the complete total, not the nightly headline rate, with the AI amount.
- Save the room rules and the precise cancellation deadline shown for that rate.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission says mandatory fees for short-term lodging must be included in the total price shown to consumers. That rule is U.S.-specific; other jurisdictions can use different disclosure requirements.
Compare offers on equal terms

Confirm schedules and the provider that actually operates the service
Schedules require more than matching a time printed in the AI response. Open the current timetable or booking engine for each operator and check the complete movement.
Flights
- Match the flight number, operating carrier, marketing carrier, departure airport, arrival airport and local dates.
- Check whether an arrival after midnight changes the calendar date.
- Recalculate every connection using the actual arrival and departure times, terminal or station changes and any required transfer process.
- Look for current service alerts, seasonal operation and aircraft or route changes.
U.S. Department of Transportation guidance requires clear identification of the airline actually operating a codeshare flight. A marketing-carrier name in an AI itinerary is therefore insufficient.

Use the operator’s current timetable or booking engine rather than a general travel page. Smartraveller specifically warns that AI can provide outdated public-transport schedules. Verify service days, reservation requirements, station names, platform or terminal information when provided, and the last connection needed to reach your lodging.

When a named service cannot be found
- Search the provider’s own site using the exact service number or property name.
- Try the local date and the adjacent date, because an overnight trip may be displayed under a different departure date.
- Check whether the AI confused a marketing name with the operating provider or translated a name inaccurately.
- If no authoritative result exists, mark the item rejected and replace it only after finding a current, bookable alternative.
Read the full fare or room rules before paying
A short AI summary can omit the condition that matters most. Open the complete fare conditions, room terms or ticket rules attached to the exact option selected.
Airline policy checklist
- Refundability and whether a refund returns to the original payment method or another form.
- Change fee, fare difference and the deadline for making a change.
- Baggage allowance, excess-bag charges and seat-assignment conditions.
- Cancellation deadline, no-show treatment and whether one missed segment cancels later segments.
- Whether the rule belongs to the operating airline, the marketing airline or the booking channel.
DOT’s ancillary-fee rule requires airlines and ticket agents to disclose baggage, change and cancellation fees and policies before purchase. For qualifying airline tickets bought at least seven days before departure in the United States, DOT says the airline must offer either a 24-hour penalty-free cancellation and refund or a 24-hour hold at the quoted price. That requirement does not apply to tickets bought through online travel agencies or travel agents, and the rule is not a worldwide standard.
Lodging policy checklist
- Exact cancellation date and time, including the property’s time zone.
- Amount retained after cancellation and whether the first night, deposit or full stay is non-refundable.
- No-show rule and treatment of late arrival.
- Prepayment, security deposit, resort or destination charge and accepted payment method.
- Conditions for changing dates, shortening the stay or changing the guest name.
Save the terms tied to the selected rate, not a generic property policy. Two rooms at the same property can have different deadlines and refund conditions.

Verify visa, border, health, customs and safety claims separately
Use the official immigration, border, health, customs and travel-advisory authority for the traveller’s nationality, passport, residence status and travel dates. Do not accept an AI citation merely because it sounds official: open the linked page and confirm that it states the rule you need and applies to your circumstances.

Claims that need individual confirmation
- Visa, electronic travel authorisation and transit requirements.
- Passport validity, blank-page and onward-ticket requirements.
- Vaccination, health-document and quarantine rules.
- Customs limits, restricted goods and declaration procedures.
- Local laws, photography restrictions, dress rules and prohibited conduct.
- Safety advisories, demonstrations, weather hazards and emergency procedures.
Smartraveller warns that incorrect AI advice in these areas can cost money, cause stress, affect safety or create a risk of breaking local laws. A government page may also change without the AI conversation being updated, so record its publication or update date when available.
Preserve evidence and resolve disagreements
- Save a PDF or screenshot of each live fare, timetable, availability result and policy page.
- Record the page address, access date and time, currency, time zone and the search assumptions.
- Keep the AI response separately so you can identify exactly which claim changed.
- If the AI and the live provider disagree, follow the current provider or regulator, not the AI.
- If a price changes between search and checkout, record both amounts and the moment of change.
- If a policy is ambiguous, contact the provider through its official channel and retain the written answer with your ledger.
Evidence protects you from relying on a remembered headline price or a rule that applied only to a different fare, date or nationality. It also gives customer support the exact context needed to investigate a discrepancy.

Keep an itinerary item only when its identity, timing, price and applicable rules are confirmed by a current authoritative source. A single unresolved booking-critical field is enough to pause the purchase.

- Hold: the item exists but a fee, connection, operating carrier, cancellation deadline or legal condition is unclear.
- Reject: the service cannot be found, the property is closed or unavailable, the schedule conflicts with the live timetable, or the legal claim is unsupported for your nationality and dates.
For a multi-leg trip, treat each leg independently. One confirmed flight does not validate the next flight, hotel, transfer or entry requirement.

Common failure modes and the fix for each
The total is lower than checkout
Return to the seller’s final price page, identify taxes and mandatory fees, then compare baggage, seats, deposits and service charges separately. Use the checkout total for your budget.
The flight number exists but the itinerary still fails
Check the operating carrier, airports, local dates, terminals and connection interval. A real flight number can still be paired with the wrong airport or an impossible connection.
The hotel policy says “free cancellation”
Open the exact rate conditions and capture the deadline, time zone, no-show rule and refund method. “Free” is meaningful only within those conditions.
An attraction is mentioned but has no current listing
Check the attraction’s current official availability and operating season. If no authoritative listing confirms it for your date, remove it rather than building transport and lodging around it.
The government rule sounds plausible
Verify the rule on the relevant authority’s page for the traveller’s passport and dates. If the page does not clearly support the claim, treat it as unconfirmed and contact the authority or provider.
Final pre-payment checklist
- Every flight, train, bus, ferry and transfer has a current timetable result.
- The operating provider, service number and airports or stations match.
- Local dates, time zones and connection windows are workable.
- The final airfare or lodging total includes mandatory taxes and fees.
- Baggage, seats, deposits, meals and other inclusions are recorded.
- Cancellation, change, no-show and refund rules are attached to the exact fare or room.
- Visa, border, health, customs, local-law and safety claims are confirmed for the traveller’s nationality and dates.
- Each source page has been saved with its access time, currency and assumptions.
- Any unresolved discrepancy is on hold or removed, not silently accepted.
The reliable workflow is simple but deliberate: extract claims, check live seller and government pages, read the exact rules, preserve evidence and stop when a critical detail cannot be confirmed. AI can accelerate the first draft; only current authoritative information should decide what you book or what you rely on.
