Before buying a Windows laptop, verify three things separately: the battery’s reported condition, the exact capabilities of its physical ports, and whether important parts can be serviced. A Windows battery report can show full-charge and design capacities, but it cannot predict your runtime. USB-C may provide charging, data, video, or Thunderbolt—or only some of those. Repairability depends on the exact model, generation, configuration, documentation, and parts supply.
Use the procedures below for a new or used laptop. For a used purchase, ask the seller for screenshots or a battery-report file before you travel, then repeat the checks in person whenever possible.
Start with a requirement list
Write down what you must connect and what you may need to replace during the laptop’s useful life. Include the charger, external monitor, dock, USB-A accessories, wired network, memory cards, headphones or microphones, and any specialized equipment. This list becomes your acceptance test; a laptop that looks attractive but lacks one essential connection is the wrong purchase.

- Record the exact product name, screen size, processor generation, and model or machine type. Similar names can hide different port layouts, batteries, and soldered components.
- Decide whether you need charging over USB-C, a particular display output, Thunderbolt or USB4, an SD or microSD slot, Ethernet, or replaceable memory and storage.
- For a used laptop, ask the seller to provide the model identification screen, a battery report, clear photographs of every port, and photographs showing the charger label.
Check the battery with Windows’ built-in report
Windows 11 includes the powercfg /batteryreport command. Microsoft’s official instruction is: “At the command prompt, type powercfg /batteryreport, then press Enter.” The resulting HTML file contains Installed battery, Recent usage, and Battery usage sections. Use the report as evidence about capacity and past use, not as a promised runtime figure.

Have a seller generate the report
- Ask the seller to open Command Prompt. It need not be an administrator window for the normal battery-report command.
- Have them enter
powercfg /batteryreportand press Enter. - Windows displays the location of the generated HTML file in the command window. Ask for that file or a full-resolution screenshot of each relevant section.
- Check that the report belongs to the laptop being offered. The model and battery information should be consistent with the machine’s photographs and serial or model details.
The command and report guidance are documented by Microsoft Support.
Read the three important sections

Calculate a capacity ratio, carefully
For a rough condition indicator, divide full-charge capacity by design capacity and multiply by 100. For example, a report showing 42,000 mWh full-charge capacity and 50,000 mWh design capacity gives 84% reported capacity. This is a comparison of the battery-management system’s estimates; it is not a laboratory measurement of runtime.
Interpret the ratio alongside the laptop’s age, charging history, current charge level, and report completeness. Capacity alone cannot tell you how long the laptop will run while compiling code, streaming video, driving an external display, or sitting idle. Screen brightness, power mode, background activity, processor load, wireless use, and thermal conditions all change actual runtime. Do not convert the ratio into a number of hours.

When the report is incomplete or inconsistent
- Ask for a fresh report after the laptop has been used normally and charged, rather than relying on an old screenshot.
- Request the report’s full HTML file when screenshots omit dates, capacities, or history.
- Compare the battery’s listed design capacity with the exact model specification. A replacement battery may have a different rated capacity from the original.
- If the report has no useful history, conflicting capacities, or a suspiciously recent installation date, treat that as missing evidence rather than proof of good health.
- For an in-person purchase, run a short, repeatable task on battery and observe whether the charge percentage falls abnormally fast. This is an observation under your conditions, not a runtime benchmark.
Surface-specific guidance is not a universal Windows rule
Microsoft provides a Surface Repair Tool for supported newer Surface models and a Surface Diagnostic Toolkit for other supported devices. Microsoft says a Surface battery below 70% of designed capacity may be replaced when the owner wants more capacity, and explains the calculation as full-charge capacity divided by design capacity. That 70% figure is a Surface-specific vendor guideline. Do not use it as a pass/fail threshold for every Windows laptop.
Inspect for a dangerous swollen battery
Look along the keyboard deck, trackpad, bottom cover, and seams for case separation, bulging, or a trackpad that has lifted. Microsoft advises stopping use immediately if a battery expands beyond its enclosure. Do not press, puncture, charge, transport for normal use, or continue operating a visibly swollen laptop; arrange appropriate service or disposal instead.
Verify what every port actually does
Port shape is not a specification. USB-C identifies the connector, not the functions available through it. Depending on the laptop, port, cable, and peripheral, USB-C may support charging, ordinary data, a particular transfer rate, DisplayPort alternate mode, Thunderbolt, USB4, or none of those beyond basic USB data. Microsoft’s guidance emphasizes that the computer, cable, and peripheral must all support the feature, and that alternate modes may work only through a designated port.

Map your required connections
- List each device you plan to use: charger, monitor, dock, USB-A equipment, Ethernet adapter, card reader, headset, storage drive, and any specialist hardware.
- Count the laptop’s actual connectors and note their shapes and symbols. Photograph both sides so you can identify them later.
- Open the exact manufacturer specification or manual for the full model number and generation. Do not rely on a product-family page that combines several configurations.
- Record the supported function beside each physical port: charging input, data speed or standard, display output, Thunderbolt or USB4, audio, networking, or card-reader support.
Use this USB-C verification matrix

A USB-C port can therefore charge a laptop yet fail to drive a monitor, or drive a monitor while accepting only limited charging. The connector and a small logo are not sufficient evidence.

- Bring the laptop’s supplied charger, or verify that the seller has the correct adapter. Check the adapter’s output rating against the model requirement.
- Test charging at each port that the documentation identifies as a charging input. Watch for a Windows slow-charging notification.
- Connect a known-good USB device and confirm that it appears in File Explorer or Device Manager. Test more than one port if the laptop has several.
- Connect your monitor or dock using the cable you intend to keep. Confirm video, USB peripherals, network, audio, and charging rather than assuming that one successful function proves all others.
- Test the card slot, headphone jack, Ethernet, and any unusual connector with the equipment you actually use.
- Wiggle neither the plug nor the port aggressively; intermittent disconnects, looseness, or a connector that works only at an angle are service concerns.
A slow-charging warning can result from an underpowered or incompatible charger, an unsuitable cable, or the wrong charging port. Verify the adapter, cable, and model requirement before concluding that the battery is defective.
Check the operating-system context
If a listing still focuses on Windows 10, remember that Microsoft’s USB-C guidance notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Confirm that the exact hardware supports the Windows version you intend to run and that required drivers and firmware remain available.

Assess repairability by exact model and generation
Repairability is not a permanent trait of a brand or product family. Search the complete product name, generation, processor configuration, and machine type together with service manual, maintenance and service guide, parts, and battery replacement. Then verify that the documents and parts match the configuration you are buying.
Check the documents first
- Is an official service or maintenance manual publicly available?
- Does it show safe procedures for the battery, storage, memory, keyboard, fan, and ports?
- Does the manufacturer publish a parts catalog or replacement-part numbers?
- Can you buy those parts in your country, with realistic shipping and warranty terms?
- Does the procedure require ordinary tools, or proprietary equipment and adhesive that raise repair cost?
An official manual proves that a procedure is documented; it does not prove that the part is stocked in your market or that the operation is economical.
Evaluate the parts most likely to fail or wear

Use iFixit scores with their version context
iFixit describes its laptop scores as teardown-based ratings from zero, meaning unrepairable, to ten, meaning easiest to repair. Its stated standard is that a repairable device should be straightforward to disassemble and allow broken parts to be replaced with parts and instructions supplied or endorsed by the manufacturer. iFixit also says, “We update our scoring rubric frequently to stay current with new technologies, materials, and design trends.” Read the scorecard version and compare models assessed under contemporaneous rubrics; an older number is not a permanent grade for every later generation.

Current examples on the accessed iFixit scores page include the 2026 Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 and T16 Gen 5. The page describes those named models as having readily repairable storage and memory, an easily replaced battery, individually replaceable Thunderbolt ports, and Lenovo repair instructions and parts. Those statements apply to the configurations and models named on that page, not to every ThinkPad.
For the Framework Laptop 13, the model-specific repair pages list battery-replacement guides and identify a T5 Torx screwdriver among common tools. The page describes four USB-C slots for user-selectable expansion cards, while limiting Thunderbolt support to named processor generations. Do not generalize those details to every Framework generation or configuration; read the guide for the exact machine.
Consider regional parts availability
A laptop may be technically repairable yet impractical to maintain if batteries, keyboards, ports, or motherboard assemblies are unavailable where you live. Before paying, search the exact part number in your market, confirm whether it is new or refurbished, and check the manufacturer’s warranty and return conditions. For a used laptop, ask the seller whether the battery or display has already been replaced and request the invoice or part number when available.

Compare two or more candidates on the same evidence
Do not let a strong battery result compensate for missing display output, or a high repair score compensate for unavailable parts. Record the same fields for every candidate.

Keep runtime claims separate from capacity evidence. A candidate with a higher reported capacity ratio is not automatically the better performer for your workload, and a repairability score does not establish battery life.
Purchase-day checklist
- Confirm the exact model and generation in Windows and on the chassis.
- Open the manufacturer’s specification or manual and match every required port to a documented function.
- Run or inspect
powercfg /batteryreport; verify Installed battery, Recent usage, and Battery usage. - Calculate full-charge capacity divided by design capacity, while recording the report date and the laptop’s age.
- Inspect the case for swelling, separation, damaged hinges, liquid evidence, and loose connectors.
- Test charging with the correct adapter, then test USB, display, dock, audio, network, and card-reader functions that matter to you.
- Search the exact model and generation for a service manual, parts catalog, and replacement battery, storage, memory, keyboard, fan, and port options.
- Confirm that the parts are obtainable in your region and that soldered components do not conflict with your upgrade plans.
- Save photographs, the battery report, the seller’s written description, and the serial or model information before completing the transaction.
Red flags that should change the deal
- The seller refuses to provide a battery report or supplies only a claimed “excellent battery” rating.
- Full-charge and design capacities are missing, contradictory, or inconsistent with the battery’s stated age.
- A USB-C port is advertised as “full function” without an exact specification identifying charging and display support.
- The supplied charger has the wrong wattage, triggers slow charging, or works only through an undocumented port.
- The laptop’s bottom cover, keyboard, or trackpad is visibly lifted, indicating possible battery expansion.
- No service manual exists for the exact generation, or the only available parts are motherboard assemblies when a battery, storage, or port fails.
- An iFixit score is quoted without the assessed model or rubric context.
- Required replacement parts cannot be found in your country, even though the laptop is technically disassemblable.
Make the decision from evidence, not labels
A sound purchase combines a plausible battery report, tested ports matched to your equipment, and a repair path supported by model-specific documentation and obtainable parts. If one of those areas cannot be verified, treat the uncertainty as a cost: negotiate accordingly, choose a different configuration, or keep looking. The most useful question is not whether a laptop is “good” or “repairable,” but whether this exact machine can perform your required connections and be maintained where you live.
