To find out whether a website is down, start with the service owner’s official status page. Confirm that you are on the provider-controlled page, select the exact product or component you use, open any active incident, and read its newest update and timestamp. Then check scheduled maintenance and recent incident history. If the page reports no relevant event, continue troubleshooting your own device, DNS, network, ISP route, account, or browser; a green provider dashboard cannot test your individual connection.
This process separates a provider-reported outage from a problem limited to one location or access path. It also gives you a reliable way to follow changes without guessing from social-media posts or third-party outage charts.

- Find the official status source. Search the service name with “status,” or open the status link in the provider’s help center. Make sure the page is operated by the service owner, not merely an outage-aggregation site.
- Choose the exact service and scope. Look for the product, API, feature, data center, country, or component involved. A top-level “operational” banner can coexist with a problem affecting one component or region.
- Open an active incident. Read the stated impact, the first report time, the most recent update time, the current investigation or mitigation stage, and the provider’s stated resolution status.
- Check maintenance and history. A quiet current summary does not rule out a recently resolved incident or scheduled maintenance affecting your service.
- Subscribe if the problem matters. Use the provider’s available email, feed, webhook, chat, or other notification option so you do not have to refresh the page.
- If no relevant event is listed, test your access path. Try another network or device, check DNS and browser behavior, and contact the provider when the evidence points to an account or regional issue.
Do not promise yourself a restoration time unless the provider actually publishes an estimate. Status pages often provide investigation and mitigation updates without a guaranteed end time.

What a status page can—and cannot—prove
A status page is an incident-communication record for systems the provider has chosen to publish. Atlassian’s official 2020 audit attachment describes Statuspage as “an incident communication tool used by organizations as part of their incident management process.” That description explains its purpose: communicating the provider’s view of an event, rather than remotely diagnosing every visitor.
What it can show
- Whether the provider has declared an incident or maintenance event.
- Which products, APIs, infrastructure components, services, or locations are affected.
- The provider’s current state, impact description, update text, and timestamps.
- Past incidents and, on some dashboards, scheduled maintenance.
- Available channels for receiving subsequent notices.
What it cannot show
- Whether your particular computer, phone, browser, or local network is functioning.
- Whether your DNS resolver, ISP, corporate firewall, VPN, or route can reach the service.
- Whether your account, tenant, payment state, permissions, or device-specific session is affected.
- Whether every customer and region is experiencing the same symptom.
Therefore, a green page is evidence that the provider has not reported a matching event; it is not proof that the website is reachable from every network. Conversely, an incident marked resolved means the provider has closed its incident, not that every individual’s local or account-specific problem has disappeared.
How to locate the provider’s official status page
Search and verify the source
- Search for the service’s name followed by status. Include the product name if the company operates several services.
- Prefer a link from the provider’s own help center, documentation, login page, or support article.
- Check the page’s domain and branding before trusting a status statement. Be cautious with look-alike domains, screenshots, and posts that do not link to the provider-controlled page.
- Bookmark the page once verified. For a business-critical service, record its incident-feed or API endpoint as well.
Third-party outage aggregators can provide useful signals from user reports, but they are not authoritative evidence of what the service owner has declared. Use them as a prompt to investigate, then confirm against the official source.
Examples of official sources
Atlassian Status is a public hub for Atlassian products. It presents an overall state, past incidents, and Atom or RSS feed links. Its separate history view groups incident records by month.
Cloudflare Status is a service and network dashboard. It separates services and locations, lists incident updates and maintenance, links to an API, and presents a historical uptime view. Cloudflare support guidance directs customers to this dashboard when they encounter unexpected behavior.

The Google Workspace Status Dashboard provides official status information for services in Google Workspace. When a company offers multiple dashboards, use the one covering the specific product rather than assuming a corporate-wide page includes every service.
Read the component and region details
Status systems commonly use a hierarchy: an overall service, a product or feature, and one or more infrastructure or geographic components. Always expand that hierarchy before deciding that an incident does or does not match your symptom.

|---|---|---|
| Top-level status | Is any broad incident currently declared? | A broad label is a summary and may hide a partial issue. |
| Product or API | Does the affected feature match the one I use? | A website, login service, API, and billing system can have separate states. |
| Component | Which backend or capability is listed? | A failure in one component may produce errors only for certain actions. |
| Location or region | Is my data center, country, or network region included? | Regional incidents can leave the rest of the service operational. |
| Customer scope | Does the notice describe all customers or a subset? | Some events affect selected tenants, plans, or accounts. |
Cloudflare’s dashboard explicitly lists services and locations separately, illustrating why the location line deserves the same attention as the headline. If a page says “operational” at the top but shows a degraded component in your region, the component notice is the relevant evidence.
Interpret incident states and timestamps
Open the incident rather than relying on a colored icon. Read the timeline from the first report through the newest update, and note the time zone used by the page.
Common stages
Cloudflare’s example uses stages such as investigating, identified, monitoring, and resolved. Other providers may use different labels or combine stages.

- Investigating: The provider is examining the cause and impact. It is not a restoration estimate.
- Identified: The provider says it has found a likely cause or affected system; service may still be impaired.
- Monitoring: A mitigation or change has been deployed and the provider is watching results. Some users may continue to see errors.
- Resolved: The provider has closed the incident according to its criteria. Individual, regional, or account problems can remain.
Which times to record
- First update: When the provider first acknowledged the event.
- Current update: When the latest information was posted; this is the best indicator of how fresh the notice is.
- State-change time: When the incident moved from investigation to identification, monitoring, or resolution.
- Maintenance window: The planned start and end times, including the published time zone.
Compare your first failure with these timestamps. A problem that began before the provider’s first update can still be related, but the page may have lagged detection. A failure that began after a resolution notice may require separate troubleshooting.
Check scheduled maintenance and incident history
Look beyond the current summary. Scheduled maintenance can explain intermittent errors without an active incident, while history can reveal a recently closed event that matches the time you experienced trouble.
Maintenance
Open the maintenance section and check the affected component, planned window, expected customer impact, and any progress notes. Maintenance records may remain visible after work is complete, so verify whether the page marks the event completed.
History
Use the history view to search by date and component. Atlassian’s history page organizes incident records by month, making it possible to inspect a specific period instead of scrolling through an undifferentiated list. A prior incident is context, not proof that the same cause is recurring.
Historical data for automation
Atlassian’s Status API documentation describes endpoints for summary and component status, unresolved incidents, all incidents, and upcoming, active, and all scheduled maintenances. These endpoints are useful for monitoring workflows and internal dashboards; most people checking a one-time outage can use the web page without an API.

Cloudflare’s dashboard also provides incident and maintenance records and a historical uptime view. Its 90-day display is a dashboard window, not an independently measured reliability guarantee and not a promise of uninterrupted service for the next 90 days. Atlassian support-status examples likewise label a 90-day uptime window; do not compare those windows as if they were standardized performance statistics.
Subscribe to incident updates
If the service is important, subscribe after you have identified the matching component. Notifications prevent repeated manual checks and preserve a time-stamped record of changes.
Available channels vary
Cloudflare documents email, webhook, Slack, Discord, and Google Chat notification options. A provider may also expose Atom or RSS feeds; Atlassian Status lists those feed links. Select only the products and components you need so routine notices do not bury a critical alert.
Notification safety and delivery
- Use an address or channel monitored by the people responsible for the service.
- Confirm the subscription by completing any verification step.
- Check which event types are included: incidents, maintenance, resolution, or all updates.
- Keep the status page open when the event is urgent; notifications can be delayed or filtered.
Cloudflare says its status-page notifications are delivered independently of Cloudflare infrastructure. That design can help notifications remain available during an infrastructure event, but it does not guarantee that every message arrives instantly.

When evaluating any other provider, ask the same five questions: Is the page owned by the provider? Does it cover the exact product, region, and component? Are updates clearly time-stamped? Are history and maintenance available? Can you receive notifications?
If the status page is green but the site still fails
A clear provider page changes your next step; it does not diagnose the cause. Work from the least disruptive checks to the more technical ones.
- Confirm the symptom. Record the exact URL, error text, time, and action that fails. A login error is different from a timeout or a missing API response.
- Try a second access path. Test another browser, device, or network such as mobile data. If one path works and another does not, the problem may be local, DNS-related, ISP-related, or route-specific.
- Check DNS behavior. Compare resolution through your normal resolver and another trusted resolver. Do not change corporate DNS settings without authorization.
- Inspect local controls. Temporarily test without a browser extension, cached session, VPN, proxy, or security filter when policy permits. Restore settings after the test.
- Check account and tenant scope. Verify that other users, projects, or accounts can reproduce the problem. A provider dashboard may not list customer-specific failures.
- Contact support with evidence. Include timestamps with time zone, affected region, account or tenant identifier, request IDs, screenshots, and the status-page incident number if one exists.
Do not infer that the provider is at fault merely because your device shows an error, and do not infer that your device is at fault merely because the status page is green. The dashboard and your access tests answer different questions.

Status information is provider-defined and can lag an emerging event. A newly developing incident may not appear immediately, and a localized or customer-specific problem may never qualify for a public notice. A single page can also omit a dependency operated by another company.
- Recheck the official page after several minutes when symptoms are widespread or worsening.
- Compare the incident’s component and region with your own location rather than relying on the headline color.
- Read the newest update, not only the original announcement.
- Keep your own timeline; provider timestamps help correlate events but do not replace local evidence.
- Treat “resolved” as the provider’s closure of its incident, not as a universal guarantee that every request now succeeds.
Dashboard labels, notification channels, APIs, and layouts are volatile. The examples described here were checked on October 13, 2026; verify the current page and documentation when you need exact interface details.
A reusable status-page checklist
- Official provider-controlled URL verified.
- Exact product, API, component, and region selected.
- Active incident opened rather than inferred from the summary banner.
- Impact statement and latest timestamp recorded.
- Current state understood: investigating, identified, monitoring, resolved, or the provider’s equivalent.
- Scheduled maintenance checked.
- Recent history reviewed for the relevant date and component.
- Notifications enabled for the needed services and channels.
- Independent device, network, DNS, and account checks performed if no matching incident exists.
- Support ticket prepared with time zone, symptoms, scope, and evidence.
The practical verdict is simple: use the provider’s status page to establish what the provider has reported, then use targeted access tests to establish what is happening on your path to that service. Keeping those two kinds of evidence separate prevents both false outage alarms and wasted local troubleshooting.
