Before paying for a used PS5 Pro, test the actual console, check that its serial number is intact, confirm it can reach PlayStation services, and ask PlayStation about warranty eligibility for that specific unit. A seller’s video or receipt can help, but neither proves the console is in good condition, lawfully owned, or covered for you.
Screen the seller and listing before you meet
Check the seller’s ratings, feedback, listing history, and return terms. Ask for a short, current video of the console being sold—not generic product footage. PlayStation recommends checking seller reputation and using your judgment when buying used products (PlayStation’s buying guide).

Ask the seller to demonstrate startup, controller connection, display output, buttons, accessible ports, and an internet connection. If the console has a disc drive attached, ask to see it operate. The PS5 Pro is sold without an internal disc drive, so this check applies only when an optional drive is part of the specific setup.

Inspect and test the console in person
A video can screen for obvious problems, but it cannot replace handling and testing the console. PlayStation specifically advises checking image quality, overheating, and physical condition in person, as well as checking functions shown in a demonstration (PlayStation’s buying guide).
- Match the console and included items to the listing. Inspect the shell, vents, connectors, feet or stand if included, and controller for damage or heavy wear.
- Power on the console and check for stable display output. Listen for unusual fan or drive behavior and watch for shutdowns or signs of overheating during a reasonable demonstration.
- Test the buttons, ports, controller, and network connection. If an optional disc drive is attached, test it too.
- Confirm the console can reach PlayStation services; a successful boot to the home screen does not establish online access.
- Locate the serial number on the console and make sure it is present and legible. Do not post it publicly or send it unnecessarily in a listing thread.
Walk away if the seller will not allow reasonable checks or if the console’s condition does not match the listing. A successful demonstration cannot guarantee that a used console will remain trouble-free, but refusing basic checks leaves you with less evidence about what you are buying.
Check identity and PlayStation-service access
Compare the console’s serial number and model details with the paperwork where available. A matching receipt and serial number, credible seller history, seller deactivation, and successful service access are useful risk checks, not definitive proof of ownership.
PlayStation warns that a console reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from its services. Ask the seller to show the console connecting to PlayStation services and to deactivate it and confirm they no longer have access. If online access fails, pause the transaction and ask PlayStation support to clarify before paying (PlayStation’s buying guide).
These checks do not establish lawful title: PlayStation’s cited guidance does not provide a public ownership database or say that an online check proves a console was not stolen. Treat service access as one useful check rather than a guarantee.

Does the PS5 warranty transfer to a new owner?
Do not assume that warranty coverage automatically follows a used console. The cited PS5 warranty terms are specifically for the United States and Canada: they provide a one-year period from original purchase for the original purchaser and require valid proof of purchase showing the original purchase date. Sony states: “A VALID PROOF OF PURCHASE IN THE FORM OF A BILL OF SALE OR RECEIPT FROM A RETAILER WITH THE DATE OF THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE MUST BE PRESENTED TO OBTAIN WARRANTY SERVICE.” Those terms also exclude certain unauthorized service or opening, and a product whose serial number has been altered, defaced, or removed (PlayStation PS5 warranty terms).
PlayStation’s US buying guide says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty; its UK guide says third-party used products may not be covered and notes that statutory rights are unaffected. Certified refurbished PlayStation products include warranty. Rules and wording differ by region, so consult the local terms and ask PlayStation to confirm eligibility for the exact console before counting any remaining coverage as part of the deal (PlayStation’s buying guide).
A receipt is evidence required for service under the cited US and Canada terms, but it does not by itself establish that a second owner can make a warranty claim. A missing, altered, or illegible serial number is a serious warning: the US and Canada terms exclude a console with an altered, defaced, or removed serial number. Do not treat a seller’s assurance, receipt, or estimated remaining time as confirmation of your eligibility.
Reset the console for a clean handover
Agree on the handover steps before payment. The seller should back up personal information, remove discs and USB devices, and restore factory settings. PlayStation recommends recording the serial number before transfer; it may help identify the console or establish ownership later (PlayStation’s transfer instructions).
- Before the reset, record the console’s serial number and have the seller back up any information they want to keep.
- Have the seller remove any disc and disconnect USB devices.
- Have the seller restore factory settings before handing over the console.
- Complete first-time setup using your own account. Do not keep using the seller’s account as a workaround for incomplete deactivation or access checks.
Make the decision on the whole deal
Compare more than the asking price. Consider what is included, the console’s tested condition, seller feedback, available paperwork, return protections, service access, and whether PlayStation confirms any warranty eligibility. A lower price may not offset missing checks or unclear coverage; without current prices and verified condition, there is no reliable way to call one listing the better value.
