The reliable way to assess a used electric vehicle (EV) is to obtain a dated, VIN-linked battery report, understand exactly what it measured, and compare the verified usable range with your routes. Do not confuse state of health (SoH) with the charge shown on the dashboard: SoH describes battery condition relative to when it was new, while state of charge is the energy available right now.

A displayed full-charge range is only an estimate. Before buying, verify the battery’s test method, capacity or SoH result, fault history, repairs or replacement, warranty terms, and the exact model-year procedure used. Requirements differ by make, market, and warranty contract.

Battery health, state of charge and range are different things

State of health (SoH) expresses the battery’s condition or remaining capacity compared with its original condition. New Zealand’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) describes SoH as a useful way to judge how much life a used EV battery has left. Australian government guidance similarly describes it as condition or performance relative to when new.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

State of charge (SoC) is the current charge level, such as 42% or 80%. A battery can show 100% SoC while having substantially less total capacity than it did when new.

Range is the distance the car estimates it can travel. It depends on usable capacity, recent driving, speed, temperature, terrain, payload, heating or air conditioning, and driving style. BMW’s consumer guidance specifically identifies vehicle type, conditions, terrain and driving style as range influences. Therefore, none of these dashboard observations alone proves battery health:

  • A high current charge percentage.
  • A single displayed kilometre or mile estimate.
  • Low odometer mileage.
  • The number of charging sessions shown by an app.

EECA notes that a low-mileage EV can still have reduced SoH, including after storage, while a higher-mileage vehicle can have better SoH. Compare documented condition rather than assuming mileage tells the whole story.

Step 1: Identify the exact car before testing it

Battery warranties and diagnostic procedures are tied to a particular vehicle, not merely to an EV badge. Record these details from the registration documents and the vehicle itself:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Make, model, trim and drivetrain.
  • Model year and current odometer reading.
  • Vehicle identification number (VIN).
  • Original in-service date, which can differ from the model year.
  • Battery size or chemistry if stated by the manufacturer.
  • Country and market in which the car was originally sold.

Ask whether the traction battery is original, has had individual cells replaced, has been partially rebuilt, or has been replaced as a complete pack. Request invoices, workshop reports and warranty claims. NIST’s November 2025 consumer-valuation study treats original packs, partial cell replacement and full pack replacement as separate attributes because refurbishment history can affect a used EV’s value and risk.

Step 2: Request a meaningful battery report

Ask the seller for a dated OEM or service report before you pay a deposit. If no useful report exists, arrange an independent EV inspection while you still have the right to walk away.

  1. Ask for VIN identification. The report should identify the same VIN shown on the car and paperwork.
  2. Confirm the date. A result from several years ago may not describe today’s capacity or faults.
  3. Identify the method. Ask whether the result came from an OEM capacity test, battery-management data, an onboard diagnostic scan, an app, or a calculated estimate.
  4. Find out what was measured. It might be SoH, usable capacity, a range estimate, a fault scan, or a warranty pass/fail result. These outputs are not interchangeable.
  5. Request fault information. The report should distinguish active faults from stored or historical codes and state whether any battery-management warnings were present.
  6. Ask about repairs. The provider should record pack, module or cell work and identify replaced components when known.
  7. Get the stated tolerance or threshold. A percentage has little meaning without the test definition and the warranty limit against which it was judged.

Australian government buying guidance says many EVs expose health information through onboard diagnostics or apps, but an independent check may be preferable. It also recommends using a mechanic experienced with EVs. A compatible OBD reader or Bluetooth adapter can be useful only after you verify that the exact make, model and year expose relevant battery data; there is no universal reader or app that works identically across EVs.

What an independent inspection should include

Ask the inspector to state whether the service includes a battery-management scan, capacity or SoH estimate, visual inspection for damage, charging operation, insulation or isolation faults, and a written interpretation. Confirm the technician is qualified for high-voltage systems and the specific vehicle. A generic code scan that does not access the traction battery is not a battery-health test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Understand what the report actually says

Use the report’s definitions, not just its headline percentage. NIST’s DCI 008 (November 2025) defines SoH in its consumer study as the percentage of original capacity remaining and treats electric range separately as distance on a full charge under typical conditions. Those definitions clarify the terms but do not certify any particular car or diagnostic product.

Report item What it can tell you What it cannot prove by itself
SoH percentage Estimated or measured capacity relative to the battery when new, if the method is disclosed. Exact real-world range, future degradation rate, or absence of intermittent faults.
Usable capacity Energy available between the vehicle’s operating limits, usually more relevant to driving than gross pack size. How that energy will translate into range in your weather, traffic and terrain.
Gross capacity Total designed cell energy before the vehicle’s safety buffer and operating limits. Energy the driver can actually use.
Full-charge range estimate The car’s current prediction based on its algorithm and recent use. A laboratory capacity measurement or guarantee of distance.
Fault scan Detected active or stored diagnostic codes and warning conditions. Proof that a battery with no stored code has full original capacity.
Warranty test result Whether the car passed a manufacturer’s specified procedure and threshold. A universal definition of a healthy battery for every EV.

Compare two reports only when their methods, capacity definitions and test conditions are comparable. A quick scan, a dashboard estimate, a manufacturer capacity test and an independent report may answer different questions.

Step 4: Use the manufacturer’s procedure when one exists

Tesla Model S Battery Health Test

The US Model S owner manual describes an optional Battery Health Test that uses battery-management data to compare expected energy retention for the battery type, age and use. It requires AC charging, can take up to 24 hours, and has prerequisites including low charge and no relevant active alerts. When complete, the touchscreen displays a percentage comparing energy retention with when the battery was new, and the instrument-cluster range estimate may be recalibrated.

This is a Model S feature described in that manual, not a procedure that should be assumed for every Tesla model or every market. Follow the current manual for the exact car, or ask a service centre to perform the documented test. Do not interrupt charging or clear warnings merely to obtain a more favourable result.

Volkswagen workshop capacity testing

Volkswagen Group of America’s technical bulletin, released December 7, 2023, applies to specified US vehicles: 2015–2019 e-Golf and 2021–2024 ID.4. It instructs technicians to address relevant battery-management fault codes before determining capacity. It describes a Battery Health Status process and, when needed, a longer Battery Health Certificate test if the first result cannot establish which side of the warranty threshold the vehicle falls on.

The bulletin identifies a 70% capacity threshold for its covered vehicles and warranty process. Customer-requested testing is not covered by the bulletin’s warranty policy. Do not generalise that threshold, procedure, model-year coverage or US-market rule to another Volkswagen, another country or another EV.

Other model-specific indicators

Some vehicles expose a manufacturer-specific indicator rather than a percentage. EECA notes that Nissan Leaf condition may also be represented by the number of battery bars out of 12. Treat such an indicator as the manufacturer’s own scale and ask what it measures; do not convert it into a precise SoH percentage without supporting documentation.

Step 5: Check the battery under realistic charging conditions

A report should be supplemented by observing whether the car charges normally. With the seller’s permission and appropriate safety precautions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Inspect the charge port for corrosion, bent contacts, contamination or physical damage.
  2. Check the included cable for cuts, heat damage and intact connectors.
  3. Confirm the plug type and that it matches the charging equipment you intend to use. Australian buying guidance specifically recommends checking plug type, cable and port.
  4. Connect to a compatible AC charger and confirm that charging starts without repeated errors.
  5. Observe the displayed charge power and whether it remains stable. A slow rate can have many causes, including the charger, temperature or the vehicle’s settings, so it is not by itself proof of battery degradation.
  6. If possible, confirm that the car can use its supported rapid-charging system and that no battery or isolation warning appears.

Do not open a high-voltage pack or attempt cell-level measurements yourself. Physical pack diagnosis requires trained personnel and proper protective equipment.

Step 6: Estimate remaining range for your actual routes

Start with the exact model, trim and model-year range specification, then adjust your expectations using the battery report and the car’s current full-charge estimate. The original published range is a reference point, not a promise for a used vehicle.

Build a route-based requirement

  1. List your normal daily distance, including commuting, school runs and errands.
  2. List your longest regular trip and identify charging locations at the destination and along the route.
  3. Account for motorway or high-speed driving, hills, winter temperatures, heavy payloads, roof equipment and frequent heating or cooling.
  4. Choose a conservative reserve that reflects the reliability of your charging network and the consequences of arriving low. Do not plan to use the displayed maximum as if it were guaranteed.
  5. Compare the resulting requirement with the vehicle’s verified usable capacity and full-charge estimate.

For a used EV, the useful question is not “How many miles does this model get?” It is “How much usable range does this exact car provide on my routes, in the conditions I actually face, with a sensible reserve?”

Why two identical cars can show different estimates

The range algorithm learns from recent consumption. A car driven gently in mild weather may show a higher estimate than the same model after fast motorway driving in cold weather. Terrain and payload also matter. A changed estimate after a battery test may reflect recalibration rather than a sudden physical loss of capacity.

Step 7: Verify warranty and legal coverage by VIN

Obtain the written battery warranty for the exact market and vehicle. Check all of the following:

  • Remaining time and mileage or kilometre limit.
  • The capacity threshold and the test method used to establish it.
  • Whether the warranty covers the complete pack, modules, cells, or only defects.
  • Exclusions for accident damage, misuse, flooding, modifications or neglected service.
  • Transferability to a second owner.
  • Required maintenance records and approved repair procedures.
  • How to make a claim and which dealer or service network can perform the test.

Australian government guidance says many manufacturers offer battery warranties lasting eight years or 160,000 km, but that is a broad description, not a universal guarantee. BMW USA describes an eight-year/100,000-mile term for its certified all-electric vehicles; that term applies to the specified BMW programme, not to other makes or markets.

A UK Parliament written answer answered on March 19, 2026, reported that different studies estimate average batteries retain 81.6% to 85% of original capacity after eight years. This is a population-level range of estimates, not a prediction for an individual car and not a substitute for a VIN-specific warranty test.

Step 8: Compare used EV candidates on evidence, not just price

Comparison Questions to ask
Verified condition Is there a recent VIN-linked report, with method, result and test date?
Usable range Does the exact trim and model year meet your routes after weather, speed, terrain and reserve are considered?
Warranty protection How much time or distance remains, what threshold applies, and does coverage transfer?
History quality Are pack, module or cell repairs documented with invoices?
Charging practicality Are the port, cable and connector type compatible with your home, workplace and public charging plans?
Evidence consistency Do the report, dashboard behaviour, service records and physical inspection tell the same story?

A car with slightly higher mileage but a strong, well-documented battery result may be a better risk than a low-mileage car with unexplained storage, missing records or no test.

Common mistakes and how to resolve them

“The dashboard says 100%, so the battery is healthy.”

That is a state-of-charge reading. Request SoH or usable-capacity evidence from a documented diagnostic method.

Check recent driving conditions, temperature, speed, terrain and climate-control use. Then compare with a capacity report and the exact original range specification.

“The car has low mileage, so degradation must be minimal.”

Storage and usage patterns can affect SoH. Ask for the report and repair history instead of inferring condition from the odometer.

“Every EV should be rejected below 70%.”

The 70% figure belongs to the specified Volkswagen US warranty procedure and covered vehicles. Thresholds vary by manufacturer, model, market and contract.

“A generic OBD app provides the definitive answer.”

Verify compatibility and data definitions. Some apps expose estimates, some expose limited codes, and some cannot access the traction battery at all.

“The seller refuses an inspection, but the price is attractive.”

Make an independent battery check or EV-experienced inspection a condition of purchase. If the seller declines, either price the unknown risk explicitly or choose another vehicle.

Printable pre-purchase checklist
