On Windows, identify the USB drive’s letter in File Explorer and run chkdsk X: /f in Command Prompt or Terminal, replacing X: with the drive’s actual letter. On a Mac, open Disk Utility and run First Aid on the flash drive’s volumes, containers, and physical device. Before either repair process, copy any important files you can still read to another location: repairs can change damaged filesystem information, and neither utility guarantees that every file can be recovered.
What these checks can—and cannot—tell you
CHKDSK on Windows and First Aid in macOS Disk Utility examine filesystem information: the structures the operating system uses to organize files and directories on a volume. CHKDSK can report errors without changing them, or attempt logical repairs when run with /f. First Aid checks and can repair certain problems related to a disk’s formatting and directory structure.
Neither check is a complete test of a flash drive’s physical hardware or memory. Apple says Disk Utility cannot detect or repair every problem a disk may have, so a clean First Aid result is not proof that a drive is healthy. A drive can also be physically failing even if a filesystem check does not report a problem.
| Tool | What it checks | Repair behavior | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| CHKDSK on Windows | A volume’s filesystem | Use /f to correct logical disk errors; Windows must be able to lock the volume. |
It is not a comprehensive flash-memory hardware diagnostic. On FAT filesystems, repairs can change the file allocation table and may affect data. |
| First Aid in Disk Utility on Mac | Storage formatting and directory-structure errors | Checks and attempts to fix certain errors. | Apple says it cannot detect or repair all disk problems; a clean result does not certify hardware health. |
The checks are most useful when a drive is acting strangely or the operating system reports a filesystem problem. If the drive contains important data, preserving readable files takes priority over trying repeated repairs.

Before you run a check: protect readable files
Copy important files from the USB drive to another drive or computer before attempting repairs, if the files are still accessible. A repair can modify filesystem metadata—the information that maps files to storage—and cannot guarantee that damaged files will be restored. Apple recommends making a current backup before using First Aid; Microsoft documents a risk of data loss during CHKDSK repairs on FAT filesystems.
- If the files open: copy the most valuable ones first and verify that the copies are on a different storage device.
- If files are unreadable or the drive is reported as failing: do not treat repeated repair attempts as guaranteed recovery. Prioritize any remaining accessible data.
- If you do not need the contents: destructive options such as erasing are separate from checking and repairing. Do not erase a drive while you still need files from it.
A practical order of operations
- Stop writing new files to the USB drive and avoid opening more files than necessary.
- Copy readable, irreplaceable files to a separate location.
- Confirm that the computer sees the expected USB device and, on Windows, identify its correct drive letter.
- Run the appropriate built-in check once and save or note the result.
- Decide on the next step from the result: continue using it for noncritical work, try a more extensive check where appropriate, seek service, or replace a drive that is reported as failing.
The built-in utilities are included with Windows and macOS, so this procedure does not require a paid diagnostic application or a special cable. A replacement drive is a sensible purchase only after the current drive is failing or cannot be repaired; a new drive does not recover data from the old one.
Check and repair a USB drive on Windows
1. Confirm the correct drive letter
Connect the flash drive and open File Explorer. Find the USB drive and note its assigned letter, such as E:. Check carefully that the letter belongs to the flash drive, not another disk. Running a check against the wrong volume can affect a different drive than intended.

Check the connection, try another USB port, or test the drive on another computer as basic troubleshooting. Once Windows displays the removable volume, return to File Explorer and verify the letter immediately before running CHKDSK.
2. Run CHKDSK with the repair option
Open Command Prompt or Terminal, then enter the command below, replacing X: with the letter you confirmed:
chkdsk X: /f
For example, if File Explorer shows the flash drive as E:, run chkdsk E: /f. Microsoft documents chkdsk d: /f as an example of checking and fixing errors; the letter in that example is not a universal USB-drive letter.
The /f option tells CHKDSK to correct logical disk errors. Without /f, CHKDSK can report errors but does not fix them. Let the command finish and read the status report rather than assuming that starting the scan means the drive has been repaired. Keep the window open until the final message appears, and do not unplug the drive during the check.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. If Windows cannot lock the volume
CHKDSK needs access that locks the volume in order to make repairs. If Windows says it cannot lock the drive, close open files and applications that may be using it, then try again. File Explorer windows, document editors, media players, backup programs, or a copy operation can keep a volume in use. After closing them, wait for any visible file activity to finish and rerun the same command.

A lock message is not a reason to disconnect the drive while Windows is working. Interrupting a check or removing a device during writes can leave the filesystem in a worse state. If the volume remains in use, treat the inability to lock it as a condition to resolve rather than repeatedly forcing repairs.
4. Understand the FAT-filesystem warning
On a FAT filesystem, CHKDSK repair may change the file allocation table, and data can be lost. Microsoft documents a prompt that can appear about lost allocation units and an option to save recovered chains as .chk files. These files are not a promise that the original files will be restored intact.
If you see a lost-allocation warning, pause and consider the value of the contents. If you have not already copied readable files, do that before accepting a repair whenever Windows still allows access. A repair may make the filesystem mountable while leaving some files incomplete, renamed, or represented only by recovered chains. Do not describe a successful command completion as proof that every original file survived.

Microsoft describes /r as checking for physical disk errors and attempting to recover data from affected sectors. It performs a more extensive read and can take longer than a routine logical check. It is not a necessary first step for every filesystem check, and it does not turn CHKDSK into a definitive hardware-health test.
For a drive that merely has a suspected directory or filesystem problem, begin with the documented /f command and interpret its report. Consider /r when the situation calls for a deeper read, such as a report involving physical errors, while recognizing that reading affected areas can take substantially longer and still may not recover every file. Preserve data first rather than using a long scan as a substitute for a backup.
6. Read the result instead of relying on a pass/fail label
A report that says Windows found and corrected errors means CHKDSK changed logical structures it could repair. A report that found no errors applies to the filesystem examination that ran; it does not certify the flash memory, connector, or controller. If errors return, files become unreadable, or the drive repeatedly disappears, stop treating another routine scan as a complete diagnosis.
Run First Aid on a USB drive on Mac
1. Back up what you can
Before repair, copy important readable files elsewhere or make a current backup. Apple advises backing up before using Disk Utility because errors may be unrepairable or files may need recovery. First Aid is a repair workflow, not a substitute for preserving a separate copy of the data.

2. Show the drive’s full structure
- Open Disk Utility from Applications > Utilities.
- Choose View > Show All Devices, if that option is available. This displays the device hierarchy in the sidebar, including devices, containers, and volumes.
A volume is the formatted storage area where files are organized. A container may sit between a physical device and its volumes. The sidebar items actually shown for a particular drive determine what you can select. Showing all devices helps you distinguish the physical USB device from the volume mounted on it.

3. Run First Aid from the volumes upward
- Select the last, or lowest-level, volume shown for the flash drive and click First Aid, then Run.
- Continue upward through the drive’s other volumes and any containers shown in the sidebar.
- Finish by selecting the physical USB device and running First Aid on it.
If the drive has no container, follow the items that are present in the sidebar rather than looking for one that is not shown. Allow each operation to finish before moving to the next item. Running the checks from the volumes upward follows Apple’s device hierarchy and gives each layer an opportunity to be checked before the parent layer.
4. Interpret the result in context
First Aid checks and can fix certain errors involving formatting and directory structure. A report that it found no problem applies to the checks it performed; it does not establish that every part of the flash drive’s hardware is healthy. Apple explicitly notes that Disk Utility cannot detect or repair every disk problem.
If First Aid reports that it repaired an issue, copy important files while the drive is available and continue watching for symptoms. If it cannot repair the issue, do not erase the drive merely to make the message disappear when its files still matter. Erasing is destructive and should follow a backup or a deliberate decision to discard the contents.
If the drive is missing, failing, or still has errors
The drive does not appear in Disk Utility
Check that the external drive is connected properly, and check its cable, connections, and power if applicable. You can also try another USB port or another computer as basic connection troubleshooting. If it still does not appear, Apple says the Mac or storage device may need service. A drive absent from Disk Utility cannot be checked there through the steps above.
Do not confuse an unmounted volume with a missing physical device: use View > Show All Devices when available to see whether any part of the drive appears in the sidebar. If nothing appears after connection checks, repeated First Aid attempts cannot operate on a device the Mac does not detect.
The utility reports that the disk is about to fail
Apple’s guidance is to back up the disk and replace it. Copy accessible files as soon as possible, then plan to stop relying on that drive. Replacing it is not a way to recover files from the old device; keep the old drive until you have recovered or deliberately discarded any data you need.
A failure warning changes the priority from routine maintenance to data preservation. Do not spend the remaining access time repeatedly running repairs if doing so risks the files you have not copied. Once the needed data is safe, replacement is the appropriate long-term decision rather than a promise that another check will make the device reliable.

The check finds errors it cannot repair, or files remain unavailable
Do not assume that rerunning a repair will restore every file. If important data remains unreadable, avoid treating additional repair attempts as a guaranteed recovery method. Keep any files that are still readable backed up, and consider whether the drive needs service or replacement based on the utility’s report and its behavior.

Neither CHKDSK nor First Aid is described as a complete file-recovery service. Their role is to check and, where possible, repair filesystem structures. A file that was already damaged, missing, or stored in an unreadable area may remain unavailable after the directory structure is repaired.
The drive seems fine after the check
Continue to keep important files backed up elsewhere. A filesystem check can address the errors within its scope, but it cannot rule out every physical problem. When finished using the drive, remove it safely rather than pulling it out during active use or writing.
Windows and Mac: which procedure should you use?
Use the utility belonging to the operating system currently accessing the drive. On Windows, CHKDSK targets the selected volume and requires /f when you want logical errors corrected. On macOS, First Aid is the graphical check-and-repair workflow, applied to the volume, then any container, and finally the physical device. Both procedures should follow a backup or file-copy step.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Remove the USB drive safely
Microsoft recommends safely removing USB flash drives and external hard drives before disconnecting them. On Windows, the removal policy affects whether writes may be cached: Quick removal does not cache writes, while Better performance can cache them and requires safe removal. If Better performance is enabled, safely remove the drive before unplugging it. Even when using Quick removal, wait until file copies or other drive activity have finished before disconnecting.
Safe removal does not repair existing filesystem errors; it helps avoid disconnecting while the operating system may still be using the device. A check that has finished is not the same as a device that is safe to pull while another application is writing. Close files, allow transfers to complete, and use the operating system’s removal command before disconnecting.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the wrong drive letter: verify the letter in File Explorer immediately before running CHKDSK.
- Repairing before copying files: logical repairs can change metadata and, on FAT filesystems, the allocation table.
- Assuming a clean report proves hardware health: both utilities have a limited scope.
- Forcing a repair while the volume is in use: close applications so Windows can lock the volume.
- Unplugging during a check or write: wait for operations to finish and remove the device safely.
- Erasing to silence an error: erasing is destructive and should not be suggested while needed data remains.
- Buying a new drive as a recovery method: replacement provides new storage but does not retrieve files from the old drive.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Windows command to check and repair a USB flash drive?
Confirm the USB drive’s letter in File Explorer, then run chkdsk X: /f in Command Prompt or Terminal, replacing X: with that letter. The /f option tells CHKDSK to correct logical filesystem errors.
What if CHKDSK says it cannot lock the volume?
Close files, File Explorer windows, and applications using the USB drive, then try the command again. CHKDSK needs to lock the volume to make repairs. Do not unplug the drive while the check is running.

Can CHKDSK delete files?
Microsoft warns that repairs on FAT filesystems can change the file allocation table and may cause data loss. Copy readable files elsewhere first. Windows may offer to save recovered chains as .chk files, but those are not guaranteed restorations of the original files.
Should I use CHKDSK /r first?
Not for every routine check. Microsoft describes /r as a more extensive read that checks for physical disk errors and attempts to recover data from affected sectors. It can take longer and is not a complete hardware diagnostic.
How do I run First Aid on a Mac USB drive?
Back up readable files, open Disk Utility, choose View > Show All Devices when available, and run First Aid on the lowest-level volume first. Continue through other volumes and containers, then run it on the physical device.
What does a clean First Aid result mean?
It means First Aid found no problem within the formatting and directory-structure checks it performed. Apple says Disk Utility cannot detect or repair every disk problem, so the result does not certify the flash drive’s physical health.
What should I do if the USB drive is missing from Disk Utility?
Check the connection, cable, and power where applicable, then try another USB port or computer. If the device still does not appear, Apple says the Mac or storage device may need service.
Is a paid diagnostic app or special cable required?
No. Windows CHKDSK and macOS Disk Utility are built-in tools for these checks. A replacement drive is appropriate only when the existing one is reported as failing or cannot be repaired; it does not recover data from the old drive.
The Bottom Line
Protect readable files first. On Windows, verify the USB letter and run chkdsk X: /f; use /r only when a more extensive read is warranted. On a Mac, use Disk Utility’s First Aid from the lowest-level volume upward through containers and the physical device. Treat clean results as filesystem information, not a hardware guarantee. If the drive disappears, cannot be repaired, or is reported as about to fail, prioritize backup, avoid destructive erasing, and replace or service it rather than relying on repeated scans.
