Open and inspect the television before you sign whenever the carrier’s terms allow it. Photograph the sealed carton, verify the exact model, examine the panel and bezel, perform a brief power-on and input test, and compare every accessory with the model’s packing list. If you see impact damage, a cracked screen or a mismatch, record it with the driver, notify the retailer through the order channel immediately, and keep all packaging. Delivery-damage deadlines vary by country and retailer; a manufacturer warranty may exclude shipping damage entirely.
What to do before the driver leaves
A large television can look fine from the outside yet have a broken panel, missing stand hardware or the wrong regional variant inside. Your safest sequence is to document the package, verify the order, inspect the set while it is supported, and test only what can be tested without risking a fall or additional damage.
- Ask whether inspection is permitted at the door. Some carriers or retailer contracts allow an open-box inspection; others require a signature first. Do not create a dispute with the driver by forcing a procedure the delivery terms prohibit. If inspection is allowed, keep the driver present.
- Photograph the unopened carton on every side. Include dents, punctures, crushed corners, torn tape, water marks, shipping labels and the model/serial label. Use continuous photos or a short video so the condition and labels are clearly connected.
- Match the label to your order confirmation. Check model number, screen size, color, tuner or regional variant, and quantity. A similar-looking model can have different ports, broadcast compatibility or included hardware.
- Open the carton without moving the unsupported panel. Follow the printed unpacking diagram. Keep foam and bags in place until the television is supported by its stand or by two people holding it upright.
- Inspect, power on and document. Under good light, look over the screen and frame, then perform a short picture-and-sound check before wall mounting. Photograph or video every fault.
Samsung’s published US guidance says to inspect for damage or defects before accepting and to tell the driver or refuse delivery if damage is found. That is a policy example, not a universal rule: the order’s own delivery terms control.
Carton and shipping-condition inspection
What to photograph
- All six sides of the carton, including the bottom if it can be photographed safely.
- Crushed corners, punctures, cuts, holes, bowed cardboard, loose tape or re-sealed seams.
- Water stains, dampness, dirt trails or labels indicating exposure to weather.
- The shipping label, model label, serial number and any “this side up” or fragile markings.
- The carton before opening and the internal foam after opening.
Photographs should show scale and context. Take a wide image of the whole box and close-ups of each defect. If a driver is present, include the delivery record or a time-stamped video when your phone supports it. Do not discard the carton because the retailer may require the original packaging for collection or exchange.

Accept, annotate or refuse?
If the carton is visibly crushed or punctured, ask the driver whether the delivery can be inspected. If the television is visibly damaged, use the carrier’s damage notation, refuse the shipment when the terms allow, or accept only after the damage is written on the delivery record. A clean signature can make a later transit-damage claim harder, although it does not automatically erase your statutory or contractual rights.
When the outside looks normal, still photograph it before opening. Hidden panel damage can occur without a dramatic carton defect, and the unopened-condition record helps establish when the problem was discovered.
Verify the exact television and included hardware
Model, size and regional variant
Read the full model code from the carton and the television label rather than relying on a shortened product name in the order listing. Confirm:
- Diagonal size and product family.
- Color or finish, if the range offers more than one.
- Tuner or regional version, especially for terrestrial or satellite broadcasting.
- Voltage or power-cord version where the retailer sells more than one market configuration.
- Quantity and any bundle components promised in the order.
Record the serial number before installation. Samsung India’s replacement guidance requires photographs and a serial, IMEI or other product identifier for damage or mismatch requests, illustrating why this information matters even when your local policy uses a different term.

Use the model-specific packing list
Do not assume that two televisions in the same series share the same contents. Open the manual or manufacturer packing list for the exact model and tick each item as it is removed. Samsung’s US TV return policy gives these examples of components that may need to be returned with the set:

A missing accessory is a fulfillment problem even if the panel works. Photograph the empty packaging location and the packing list, then ask the retailer whether it will send the part or arrange an exchange. Do not substitute a generic power cable, stand screw or One Connect cable until the manufacturer confirms compatibility.
Inspecting the panel and bezel safely
Visual inspection under good light
With the screen still supported, remove only loose outer packaging that the instructions identify as removable. Look at the panel from straight on and at shallow angles. Check for:
- Cracks, star-shaped impact points or a line running through the glass.
- Scratches, gouges, pressure marks and dark blotches.
- Frame separation, a bowed panel, lifted corners or gaps between bezel and chassis.
- Areas where the glass or display surface appears pushed inward.
- Loose trim, broken feet mounts or impact marks on the rear housing.
Never press the display to test a mark. Pressure can create permanent damage, especially on thin panels. Do not lift a large screen by one corner or carry it flat unless the model’s instructions specifically permit that method; use the recommended number of people and keep the panel upright.

Do not remove the wrong protective layer
Some televisions have a clearly identified shipping film; others have a layer that is part of the display construction. Sony warns that removing a layer other than the intended protective film can permanently damage the television. Follow the model’s illustrated instructions and remove only a film that is explicitly identified. If you cannot tell, leave it in place and ask the retailer or manufacturer.
What a first power-on can and cannot prove
After the television is on a stable surface or securely supported by an installer, connect power and perform a brief check before wall mounting. Confirm that:
- The standby indicator and panel light operate.
- The startup image fills the expected area without obvious lines, large black regions or severe blotches.
- Menus respond to the remote or control button.
- Sound comes from the built-in speakers at a moderate volume.
This is an acceptance check, not a laboratory pixel test. A short startup image may not reveal every uniformity characteristic, and the official delivery policies do not establish a universal pixel-defect threshold. Do not spend hours running stress patterns while the set is precariously supported. Record a short video of any obvious fault and stop if the panel behaves abnormally.

Port testing is most useful when it mirrors your planned setup. Use known-good cables and a device that works on another display. The official policies require inspection and evidence but do not prescribe one universal sequence, so follow the model manual for input selection, eARC settings and network setup.

HDMI inputs, ARC and eARC
- Connect a known-good source, such as a streaming box, game console or disc player, to the first HDMI input.
- Select that input from the TV menu and confirm a stable picture and sound.
- Repeat for each HDMI socket you need for your installation. You do not have to test unused inputs immediately, but test every port advertised as essential to your setup.
- If you use a soundbar or receiver, connect it to the labeled ARC/eARC port and follow the manual’s audio-control and eARC settings. Confirm that audio passes and that volume control behaves as expected.
A cable that works in one port but not another is evidence worth recording; it is not proof that the television alone is defective until the cable and source have been cross-checked.
Antenna, satellite and USB
- Connect the antenna or satellite lead if you depend on the built-in tuner, then open the source or channel-scan menu. You can verify that the input is detected without completing a full scan.
- Insert a known-good USB drive or accessory and check whether the TV detects it in the input menu. Avoid opening unknown files or installing software during the acceptance check.
Optical audio, Ethernet and Wi-Fi
For optical audio, connect the cable to the TV and an audio device, select optical output in sound settings and confirm a signal. For Ethernet, connect a working network cable and check the network-status page. For Wi-Fi, open the setup screen and confirm that nearby networks appear; you do not need to complete account setup merely to establish that the radio can scan. If your model uses a separate One Connect connection, inspect and test that connection exactly as the manual shows.
Photograph the port panel and any failure message. A bent socket, loose connector or intermittent picture should be reported before the TV is installed in a way that makes access difficult.

Evidence to keep
- Carton photos before opening and internal-packaging photos after opening.
- Clear images of the panel, bezel, rear housing, serial/model label and damaged or missing accessory.
- A short video showing a line, black area, startup failure, sound problem or port failure.
- The order confirmation, delivery date, delivery record and the exact time the defect was discovered.
- All foam, bags, labels, stands, screws and cartons.
Write the defect on the delivery record where possible. Then notify the retailer through the same order channel used for purchase, even if the manufacturer has a service form. State the model and serial number, describe when the issue was found, attach the evidence and ask for the available remedy: replacement, collection, repair or refund. Do not wall-mount, modify or dispose of the set while the claim is pending.

If the screen is cracked
LG USA instructs customers whose screen was cracked or damaged when the box was first opened to contact the retailer to receive warranty service. In practical terms, treat a cracked-on-opening panel as a retailer delivery or exchange claim first, not as a normal repair request. Keep the screen exactly as found and avoid powering it on if glass is loose or the chassis is unsafe.
If an accessory is missing
Send the model-specific packing list and a photograph of the opened packaging. Ask whether the retailer will ship the missing part or replace the complete unit. A replacement remote must match the exact model number; a remote from a visually similar series may not pair or may omit required functions.

There is no single worldwide deadline. The policy attached to your order and the delivery country govern. The following published examples show how sharply the rules can differ:

The Roku example demonstrates why “under warranty” does not necessarily mean “covered after delivery.” Transit, delivery, installation, cosmetic and impact exclusions can move responsibility to the retailer or carrier. Read the order’s return and damage section before delivery day, save a copy, and act on the shortest applicable deadline.
Decision guide: accept, refuse or accept with a written exception
Refuse or seek immediate carrier notation
- The carton is punctured through to the interior or visibly crushed over the panel area.
- The screen is cracked, the chassis is bent, or glass is loose.
- The model, size, region or quantity does not match the order.
Accept only after documenting and contacting the retailer
- There is cosmetic carton damage but no visible TV damage and the delivery terms require acceptance.
- An accessory appears missing but the set is safe to keep temporarily.
- A startup or port fault appears during the brief check.
In these cases, write a precise description on the delivery record, take photographs, keep every packing material and submit the claim immediately. “Box damaged” is less useful than “20 cm puncture on upper-left panel side; no inspection permitted; photos attached.”
Proceed with installation
Install only after the model is correct, the panel and frame are intact, required accessories are present, and the basic picture, sound and planned connections work. Keep the packaging until the exchange or return period has ended, even if the first test is successful.
Common mistakes that weaken a claim
- Signing without any record: A later claim may still be valid, but you lose useful evidence about the condition at delivery.
- Throwing away the carton: Collection services often need the original foam and box to protect the panel.
- Removing an unidentified screen layer: Sony warns that the wrong layer can cause permanent damage.
- Testing with questionable cables: Cross-check the cable and source before declaring a port defective.
- Mounting before testing: Wall removal makes an exchange harder and can introduce installation damage.
- Using a generic stand or screw: Incorrect hardware can make the television unstable or damage its mounting points.
- Waiting for a manufacturer repair appointment: For shipping damage, the retailer’s shorter exchange window may expire first.
- Describing only a symptom: Include the model, serial, input, cable, source device, error message and a video.
Printable delivery-day checklist
- ☐ Confirm inspection permission and keep the driver present when allowed.
- ☐ Photograph every carton side, shipping label, model/serial label and all damage.
- ☐ Match model, size, color, tuner/region and quantity to the order.
- ☐ Open with the TV supported; do not lift or press the panel.
- ☐ Inspect glass, bezel, frame, rear housing, feet mounts and connectors.
- ☐ Remove only the clearly identified shipping film.
- ☐ Compare the contents with the exact model’s packing list.
- ☐ Check remote, batteries, stand, screws, power cord, adapters, manual and any One Connect hardware.
- ☐ Power on safely and check startup image, obvious lines or black areas, menus and sound.
- ☐ Test the HDMI/eARC, antenna or satellite, USB, optical, Ethernet/Wi-Fi and One Connect connections you need.
- ☐ Photograph and video every defect or missing part.
- ☐ Note the issue on the delivery record and contact the retailer immediately.
- ☐ Keep the carton, foam, bags and labels until the return or exchange window ends.
Bottom line
Inspect first, sign second whenever the delivery terms permit. The decisive evidence is a dated record of the carton, model and serial label, panel condition, accessories and first functional checks. For a cracked or impact-damaged screen, start with the retailer’s delivery-damage process; for a missing component, use the model packing list; and for any deadline, follow the policy for your order and country rather than assuming a manufacturer warranty covers transit damage.
