Open the game’s Steam Store page, find System Requirements, and compare the section for your operating system with your PC. Then check that the drive where you plan to install the game has at least the listed available space. Steam says requirements are listed on each game’s Store page, but meeting the minimum does not guarantee a particular frame rate or smooth performance.
Find the game’s requirements on its Steam Store page
- Open the Steam Store page for the exact game you want to install.
- Scroll to System Requirements. Steam Support confirms that each game’s requirements are listed on its Store page: Steam Support: Troubleshooting Game Performance Issues – Software.
- Read the requirements for the operating system you will use. A listing may show separate requirements for Windows, macOS, and SteamOS + Linux; use the section that matches your platform.
For example, the Steam listing for Unpacking separates its platform requirements. Do not assume that figures listed for one operating system apply to another.
Compare your PC with every listed requirement
Check the game’s listed operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware, and any stated DirectX or other conditions. Compare your PC against the requirements for the platform you intend to use, rather than checking only the graphics card or processor.

If the listing separates Minimum and Recommended specifications, treat them as different targets. Minimum specifications are a baseline, not a promise of a specific frame rate or overall experience. Recommended specifications are a stronger target, not an absolute prerequisite for installing the game.

Steam cautions that “Simply meeting the system requirements does not mean you’ll have high FPS or strong in-game performance.” It also notes that updates can add features or improve graphical fidelity, potentially making a game run less well on older hardware. Check the game’s listing again if you are relying on specifications that may have changed: Steam Support’s performance troubleshooting guidance.
Check available space on the drive you will use
Find the game’s Storage or available-space requirement on its Store page. Compare that number with the free space on the drive where the game’s Steam library is located—not just the free space on another drive in your PC.

Steam game storage needs vary by title. When accessed on October 9, 2026, the Steam listing for Unpacking showed 1 GB of available space; PRAGMATA showed 40 GB; and The Alters showed 50 GB. These are examples from individual listings, not a standard size for Steam games.
Available space is not always the final installed size
Do not assume the listed space requirement equals the completed installation’s footprint. The Steam listing for The Evil Within showed 50 GB available for installation and said that the completed PC installation takes approximately 41 GB. Treat the listing’s available-space figure as the amount to have free before installation, even when the final installed size is lower.

If the intended drive does not have enough room
- Choose another Steam library drive if it has enough free space for the game.
- If no suitable drive has room, consider increasing storage capacity.
- Follow any storage-device note on the specific game listing. For example, PRAGMATA and The Alters include SSD-related recommendations or notes; that does not make an SSD a blanket requirement for every Steam game.
Confirm the installation drive’s available space and the game’s current listing before you start the download. Requirements and features may change as a game is updated.
