Token ACL is a permissioned-token design for Solana’s Token-2022 program, not another name for a honeypot. It uses account freeze-and-thaw controls and a Gate Program to decide whether an account meets an allow/block policy. To assess a specific token, inspect its exact mint, its mint and freeze authorities, and—if Token ACL is configured—the gate and the policy it applies. A live freeze authority is worth investigating, but it does not by itself prove fraud.
What Token ACL does
Token ACL, described in Solana’s Permissioned Tokens with Token ACL (sRFC37) guide, is an access-control design for Token-2022 tokens. It combines freeze/thaw account state with a Gate Program that evaluates an allow/block policy. In the documented setup, a Token ACL configuration receives the mint’s freeze authority. An account can be thawed permissionlessly when the configured gate approves it; permissionless here means that the account holder does not need an issuer to perform the thaw, not that every account automatically qualifies.
The ABL Gate is a reference implementation, not the only possible policy. The specification defines an interface that issuers can use with custom gate logic, so the actual rules depend on the Gate Program configured for a mint. Identifying a token as using Token ACL does not, on its own, tell you who will be allowed or blocked.
How Token ACL differs from a Transfer Hook
Both mechanisms can add rules to Token-2022 tokens, but they act at different points. Token ACL is used for account activation through freeze/thaw and gate checks; a Transfer Hook runs custom logic on every transfer involving a hook-enabled mint. Solana documents them as distinct approaches that can also be used together.

How to check whether a Solana token may be a honeypot
There is no single authority setting that proves a token is safe or fraudulent. Use the exact mint address and investigate what the relevant authorities and any token-specific programs can do.

- Confirm the exact mint address and token program. A name or ticker is not unique; Solana identifies a token by its mint address. Verify the address from a source you trust, then check which token program governs it. See Solana’s token and account concepts.
- Check mint authority and freeze authority separately. Mint authority can create additional token units; freeze authority can freeze token accounts. These are separate powers, not interchangeable labels. Solana explains minting tokens and freezing an account.
- If Token ACL is present, identify its configuration and Gate Program. Determine the actual allow/block policy and how it applies to your wallet. Delegating freeze authority can be an intentional part of this design, so that delegation alone is not proof of a honeypot.
- Evaluate the controls in context. Ask whether the policy is disclosed and understandable, and whether the mint’s configuration matches what the issuer claims. A generic scanner badge or a claim that authorities are “renounced” is not a complete safety assessment.
Freezing an account prevents it from receiving, transferring or burning tokens until it is thawed. Revoking the freeze authority prevents future freezes through that authority role. Setting an authority to None permanently removes that role; this does not remove other authority roles or establish that a token is risk-free. A live freeze authority is a consequential capability because it can restrict account activity. It merits scrutiny, but Token ACL may use delegated freeze authority deliberately to enforce an access policy. Conversely, the absence of a live mint or freeze authority does not establish that a token is safe: those checks do not reveal every relevant token policy, market or liquidity risk, or program-specific behavior.

The cited Solana technical documentation explains authority behavior and Token ACL mechanics; it does not provide a complete honeypot-detection algorithm. Treat authority checks as a starting point, not certification. You still need to investigate the token’s configuration and any custom programs that affect your ability to hold, transfer or sell it.

As of the Solana Token ACL guide checked on October 7, 2026, the guide listed Token ACL and ABL Gate program addresses as deployed on devnet and said a mainnet release would follow after audits. This is documentation-reported, time-sensitive status, not confirmation that a program is currently deployed on a particular cluster. Verify the cluster and program deployment before interacting.

The same guide characterizes Token ACL as an educational reference implementation and says custom Gate Programs need their own security review. The sRFC37 specification says Token ACL requires a Token-2022 mint using the Default Account State extension and delegation of freeze authority. Separately, Token-2022 documentation lists completed audits for the Token-2022 program as of March 20, 2025. That program-level audit listing does not establish that every Token ACL program, custom gate, deployment or integration has been audited; see the Token-2022 documentation.
