Open the Pokémon’s summary to see its CP, then open the Pokémon menu and choose Appraise. The appraisal shows a three-star rating plus separate Attack, Defense, and HP assessments. Check those values before transferring. To review upgradeability, inspect the Power Up button and its Stardust and Candy cost; the official help pages do not document a numeric power-up-level display, so CP alone cannot tell you an exact level.

What to check before you transfer

A safe transfer decision in Pokémon GO uses four pieces of information from the Pokémon’s own screens:

  • CP (Combat Power): the battle-performance measure shown on the summary screen.
  • Appraisal stars: the overall three-star rating from your Team Leader.
  • Attack, Defense, and HP assessments: the individual parts of the appraisal, commonly called IVs by players.
  • Power-up information: whether the Pokémon can be powered further and what Stardust, Candy, or Candy XL the next upgrade requires.

Review all four before selecting transfer. CP tells you the Pokémon’s current displayed combat strength, while appraisal describes its potential. The appraisal is not a universal ranking for every battle format, and the official help guidance does not define a single star, CP, or bar threshold at which every Pokémon should be kept or discarded.

How to check CP in the current Pokémon GO interface

  1. Start in Map View.
  2. Tap Main Menu.
  3. Tap Pokémon.
  4. Select the Pokémon you are considering transferring.
  5. Read the CP value on the Pokémon summary screen.

Niantic’s summary guidance identifies CP on this screen and also provides access to actions such as appraisal and transfer. If a label or button is positioned differently after an app update, use the Pokémon summary as the starting point and look for the Pokémon’s menu actions rather than assuming an older layout.

What CP means

CP, or Combat Power, is Niantic’s measure of how well that Pokémon will perform in battle. It is a current value for that individual Pokémon, not a direct readout of its appraisal or power-up level. Two Pokémon of the same species can show different CP values, and a higher CP does not by itself establish that one has the better Attack, Defense, or HP appraisal.

How to see a Pokémon’s IVs (the Appraise screen)

  1. Open the Pokémon’s summary by following the Map View, Main Menu, Pokémon path.
  2. Open the Pokémon’s menu.
  3. Tap Appraise.
  4. Read the Team Leader’s star rating and the separate Attack, Defense, and HP assessments.

“IVs” is the term players commonly use for these underlying individual values. Niantic’s user-facing label is appraisal. The official appraisal help page describes a three-star scale and separate assessments for Attack, Defense, and HP; more stars represent higher battle potential according to that guidance.

How to read the stars

The star summary is a broad potential rating. It is useful for separating a particularly strong appraisal from a weak one, but it does not state that every Pokémon with fewer stars is useless. A lower-rated Pokémon can still matter to a player’s collection, a particular battle situation, or a personal goal. The cited official guidance does not publish a universal transfer cutoff, so treat the stars as evidence for a decision rather than an automatic command to transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to read the Attack, Defense, and HP bars

The three assessments show how the Pokémon’s appraisal is distributed across Attack, Defense, and HP. Read them independently instead of looking only at the overall star count. For example, two Pokémon can have the same star summary while showing different distributions among the three attributes. The screen gives you a more specific comparison than CP alone, but it still does not tell you which distribution is best for every possible battle format.

Can you see a Pokémon’s exact power-up level?

The official help material reviewed for this workflow does not establish a numeric “power-up level” field or a conversion that lets you calculate an exact level from CP. Do not infer a level from CP alone. CP depends on more than the amount of upgrading represented by a number on the screen, so a CP comparison cannot serve as an official level readout.

What the Power Up button does show

On the Pokémon summary, inspect the Power Up button. The game displays the resources needed for the next upgrade, including Stardust and Pokémon-specific Candy. As a Pokémon becomes stronger, the displayed cost may rise. Higher CP upgrades may also require Candy XL. This cost is actionable information about the next upgrade, but it is not a numeric level label.

How to tell whether you have powered one up already

There is no documented numeric power-up-level readout in the official pages used for these instructions. The reliable in-app facts are the Pokémon’s current CP and HP and the resources shown for the next Power Up. If you recorded the Pokémon before upgrading it, you can compare those earlier values with the current summary. Without a prior record, the reviewed help material does not provide a guaranteed on-screen number that identifies how many upgrades have already been applied or the exact level reached.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After a power-up, CP and HP increase. That change can confirm that an upgrade occurred when you observed both states, but it still does not establish an exact level from the current CP alone.

What powering up changes—and what it does not

Action or value What the official guidance establishes How to use it before transfer
CP Shown on the Pokémon summary and described as a measure of battle performance. Record the current value; do not treat it as an exact power-up-level indicator.
Appraisal stars Three-star rating reflecting higher or lower battle potential. Use it as an overall comparison, not as an automatic keep-or-transfer rule.
Attack, Defense, HP appraisal Separate assessments supplied by the Team Leader. Compare the individual attributes when two candidates have similar stars or CP.
Power Up Raises CP and HP and shows the Stardust and Candy cost for the next upgrade. Check the cost and whether the upgrade is affordable before investing or transferring.
Appraisal after Power Up Powering up does not improve appraisal. Do not spend resources expecting the star rating or attribute assessments to increase.
Appraisal after evolving Evolving does not improve appraisal. Evaluate the appraisal before evolving or transferring; evolution is not a way to raise it.
Purifying a Shadow Pokémon Niantic says purification improves appraisal. Consider purification as a separate decision; do not confuse it with a normal power-up.

Niantic’s Help Center states: “Please note that Evolving or Powering Up a Pokémon will not improve its appraisal, however Purifying a Shadow Pokémon will improve its appraisal.”

Resources and limits shown on the Power Up button

Stardust and regular Candy

A power-up consumes Stardust and Candy specific to that Pokémon’s evolution family. The exact amounts appear beside the Power Up control for the next upgrade. Because costs can increase as the Pokémon becomes stronger, read the current screen instead of relying on a remembered price from another Pokémon or an earlier upgrade.

Candy XL

Candy XL is also tied to the Pokémon’s evolution line and can be required for higher CP. Niantic says Candy XL can be collected starting at Trainer level 31. The game’s displayed cost tells you when this resource is required for the next upgrade.

Trainer-level limit

Your Trainer level limits how far a Pokémon can be powered up. A Pokémon may have additional theoretical potential, but the game will not allow upgrades beyond the limit associated with your current Trainer level. This is another reason not to interpret the current CP as a complete statement of the Pokémon’s eventual strength.

A practical comparison method before transferring

When you have multiple Pokémon of the same species or evolution family, compare the information the app actually provides. A simple side-by-side record prevents a high current CP from hiding a more favorable appraisal or an expensive investment decision.

Comparison field Question to ask Why it matters
Current CP Which Pokémon is stronger right now according to the displayed CP? Useful for current battle readiness, but not an exact level or complete quality score.
Appraisal stars Which has the higher overall Team Leader rating? Indicates relative battle potential under Niantic’s appraisal system.
Attack How does each Attack assessment compare? Shows one component of the appraisal separately from Defense and HP.
Defense How does each Defense assessment compare? Prevents the overall star summary from hiding a meaningful distribution difference.
HP How does each HP assessment compare? Completes the three-part appraisal view.
Next Power Up cost How much Stardust, Candy, or Candy XL would the next upgrade use? Shows the immediate investment required and whether the upgrade is currently available.
Resources already invested Have you already spent resources on this Pokémon? Records your investment for your own decision; it does not improve the appraisal.

Do not let one column automatically dominate the others. The official pages do not provide battle-format-specific rankings or a universal transfer threshold. Your choice can reasonably depend on whether you value current CP, a stronger appraisal, lower future cost, or simply keeping a particular Pokémon.

Before-transfer checklist

  • Open the correct Pokémon from the summary screen, especially when several entries have similar names.
  • Record the displayed CP.
  • Open Appraise and check the star rating.
  • Read Attack, Defense, and HP separately rather than relying only on the stars.
  • Check whether the Pokémon is a Shadow Pokémon if purification is part of your decision, because purification can improve appraisal while ordinary powering up cannot.
  • Open Power Up and read the next Stardust and Candy requirement.
  • Note whether Candy XL is required and whether your Trainer level permits further upgrading.
  • Decide whether the Pokémon’s current CP, appraisal, resource history, and future cost justify keeping it.
  • Only then choose the transfer action.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: using CP as a substitute for IVs

CP is visible immediately and can feel like a quality score, but it is not the same as appraisal. Always open Appraise before transferring a Pokémon whose underlying attributes matter to you.

Mistake: assuming a power-up raises the star rating

It does not. Niantic explicitly says powering up does not improve appraisal. Spend Stardust and Candy to increase CP and HP, not to change the stars or the Attack, Defense, and HP assessments.

Mistake: assuming evolution raises appraisal

Evolution also does not improve appraisal. If the current appraisal is important, inspect it before evolving; evolution is not a correction for a low rating.

Mistake: treating every lower-star Pokémon as disposable

The star display describes potential, not a complete statement of every Pokémon’s usefulness. The official guidance does not define a universal transfer cutoff, so keep your own goals and intended use in the decision.

Mistake: calculating an exact level from CP

The reviewed official pages do not document a numeric power-up-level field or an official CP-to-level conversion for this screen. Use the displayed Power Up cost and your own records rather than presenting an inferred level as a game value.

What is and is not documented about transfer confirmation

Niantic describes transfer as a way to free Pokémon storage and receive Candy. The transfer material available for this workflow does not document every current warning dialog or all protected-Pokémon categories. Because those safeguards can vary by version and context, do not rely on a presumed warning to catch a mistake. Perform the CP, appraisal, and Power Up checks first, then read every confirmation screen that your version displays.

A fast decision sequence for storage cleanup

  1. Identify: open one Pokémon and verify that it is the individual you intend to review.
  2. Measure current state: note CP from the summary.
  3. Inspect potential: open Appraise and read stars, Attack, Defense, and HP.
  4. Price the next upgrade: open Power Up and read Stardust, Candy, and any Candy XL requirement.
  5. Check constraints: account for your Trainer-level limit and whether the displayed cost is worth paying.
  6. Choose: keep, reserve for a future decision, or transfer based on the complete comparison—not CP alone.
  7. Confirm carefully: review the final transfer interface and any warning shown by your current app version.

Answers to the questions players ask most

How do I check a Pokémon’s CP before transferring it?

From Map View, tap Main Menu, choose Pokémon, select the Pokémon, and read CP on its summary screen.

How do I see a Pokémon’s IVs?

Open the Pokémon’s menu and tap Appraise. Niantic calls this an appraisal; it shows stars and separate Attack, Defense, and HP assessments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What do the appraisal stars and bars mean?

The stars summarize the Team Leader’s assessment of battle potential, while the Attack, Defense, and HP displays show the three components separately. They help you compare Pokémon, but the official guidance does not set one universal keep-or-transfer threshold for every battle format.

How can I tell if I powered a Pokémon up already?

The reviewed official help pages do not provide a numeric power-up-level field. You can see the current CP and HP and the cost of the next Power Up; an exact prior level cannot be inferred from CP alone. A before-and-after record can confirm a change when you made that record.

Will powering up or evolving improve appraisal?

No. Niantic says neither powering up nor evolving improves appraisal. Its guidance says purifying a Shadow Pokémon does improve appraisal.

Why does the Power Up button mention Candy XL?

Higher CP upgrades can require Candy XL, which is specific to the Pokémon’s evolution line. Niantic says Candy XL collection begins at Trainer level 31, and your Trainer level limits how far you can power up a Pokémon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest rule before tapping Transfer

Use the summary for CP, the Pokémon menu for Appraise, and the Power Up button for the next resource cost. Treat appraisal as potential rather than a universal verdict, and do not claim an exact power-up level that the game’s documented interface does not show. Once those checks are complete, make the transfer decision with the current CP, appraisal, resource investment, and Trainer-level limits in view.
