Check the rules for the exact competition edition and category before you submit. A contest may ban fully generated pictures while allowing limited AI-assisted noise reduction, or it may prohibit any tool that adds or removes captured content. Read the entry rules together with manipulation guidance, disclosure requirements, file-verification instructions and the consequences of non-compliance. Save the applicable rule page or PDF, record its version and the date you checked it, and ask the organizer in writing whenever the wording leaves room for doubt.

Start with the exact edition and category

Photography policies are not universal. The same organizer can apply different standards to documentary, nature, portrait, commercial or open categories, and a rule can change from one annual edition to the next. Do not rely on a general FAQ, a previous year’s blog post or another entrant’s interpretation.

  1. Open the official page for the competition edition you intend to enter.
  2. Open the specific category rules, not only the competition homepage.
  3. Follow links to judging, manipulation, technical-specification and verification pages.
  4. Search each page or PDF for AI, artificial intelligence, generative, synthetic, generative fill, editing, manipulation, composite, retouching, original file, RAW and disclosure.
  5. Save a copy or print-to-PDF of the wording, and note the edition, version (if shown) and the date you checked it.

Keep the saved rule with your submission records. If the organizer later updates a web page, you can show which requirements you followed when you entered. A bookmark alone is not enough: pages can change, links can move and a general policy can coexist with a stricter category rule.

Separate the different kinds of AI use

“AI-edited” is not a single action. Eligibility usually turns on what changed in the picture, not on the software’s marketing label. Classify every operation you used before comparing it with the rules.

Operation What it does Questions to ask in the rules
Fully generated image Creates a picture without a camera capture of the depicted scene. Are synthetic, computer-generated or text-to-image entries eligible at all?
Generative fill or replacement Reconstructs an area or extends the frame with newly generated pixels. Is generative fill expressly banned? Are extensions, sky replacements or background replacements treated as additions?
Adding, removing or moving content Introduces an object, deletes a person or rearranges captured elements. Does the manipulation policy prohibit changes to image content, even when the tool is not labelled AI?
Enhancement that preserves content Adjusts noise, sharpness, exposure, colour or local contrast without changing depicted information. Are smart or AI-powered adjustments allowed only to a stated limit? Who decides whether a change is significant?
AI enlargement or reconstruction Upscales a file by estimating detail that was not recorded at capture. Does the contest regard invented detail as new information? Are named enlargement tools prohibited?
Disclosure and provenance Records the tools, edits or generation method used. Must you disclose AI assistance, retain a processing history or submit the original capture?

A tool can perform several of these operations. A denoise setting may preserve captured content, while the same application’s generative brush may add it. Describe the actual operation, not merely the application name, when you ask an organizer for a ruling.

Think in terms of captured information

For each edit, ask four practical questions: Was the scene photographed by a camera? Did the operation introduce information that the camera never recorded? Did it remove or rearrange information that was recorded? Did it merely make existing information easier to see? This framework helps when rules use different terminology. “AI,” “smart,” “synthetic,” “computer-generated,” “content-aware” and “reconstruction” are not interchangeable labels.

Make a chronological list rather than describing only the final look. A crop followed by denoising is different from a generative extension followed by a crop. A conventional healing brush can remove a person even though it is not marketed as AI. Conversely, automatic colour or contrast correction may leave the depicted content unchanged. The rule’s effect-based language normally matters more than the brand of software.

Read the manipulation guidance as carefully as the entry rules

Definitions and examples often contain the practical boundary that a short eligibility paragraph omits. Look for language about adding, deleting, rearranging, reversing, distorting or removing people and objects. Also check whether major colour or tonal changes are sent to a jury for a case-by-case decision.

World Press Photo’s manipulation guidance, for example, says that altering image content by adding, rearranging, reversing, distorting or removing people or objects makes an entry ineligible for an award. Its guidance separately discusses prohibited additions and says significant colour or tonal changes may be referred to the global jury. That means the visible result matters; a contest does not necessarily decide eligibility from the tool’s name alone. Read the full guidance at What counts as manipulation.

Do not assume that a familiar photographic convention is automatically acceptable. If a category permits compositing or specified adjustments, follow its exact limits. If the rules say that a jury decides whether a change is significant, treat that as uncertainty rather than a guarantee. Your own view that an edit is “subtle” does not replace the organizer’s standard.

What current official rules demonstrate

World Press Photo

The World Press Photo entry rules reviewed on 13 October 2026 require camera-made photographs. They state: “No synthetic or artificially generated images are allowed, and no use of artificially generative fill is allowed in post-production.” The same rules allow limited smart or AI-powered enhancement only when it does not significantly change the image as a whole, introduce new information or remove information captured by the camera.

The rules give denoise, automatic level/colour/contrast adjustments and object selection for local adjustments as examples that may be allowed to a limited extent. The organization and global jury determine the limit, so an example is not an automatic guarantee of acceptance. The rules identify AI-powered enlargement tools, including Adobe Super Resolution and Topaz Photo AI, as immediate breaches because they introduce new information. Read the complete wording at World Press Photo’s entry rules.

This example illustrates why “AI allowed” and “AI banned” are both incomplete summaries. Under this wording, a content-preserving enhancement may be possible, while a generated image, generative fill, or enlargement that invents detail is not. If the same application offers all three functions, assess the function you actually used.

World Photographic Cup 2026

The 2026 World Photographic Cup rules show why a category-by-category check is essential. Multiple categories prohibit AI or CGI elements, but the permitted editing and compositing differ. Nature Landscape, for instance, permits specified adjustments while disallowing added, deleted or moved elements; another category may impose a different boundary. The committee may request RAW or JPEG files containing original camera EXIF data to confirm eligibility. Read the category’s own text rather than applying the Nature Landscape wording to another entry.

When comparing categories, make a small matrix with one row for each category and columns for generated imagery, AI or CGI elements, compositing, additions and deletions, permitted adjustments, disclosure and requested originals. This prevents a permissive sentence in one category from being mistaken for a contest-wide exception.

Sony World Photography Awards Single Image

The official Single Image competition page reviewed here explains entry and image-use terms, but the accessible rule text did not establish its current AI-specific eligibility policy. Do not treat that absence as permission or a ban. Open the complete current terms for your award and category, or obtain a written answer from the organizer before submitting.

Compare contests on the same six axes

If you are choosing between competitions, compare their policies rather than assuming that a familiar organizer uses a familiar standard. Record the answer for each event on these axes:

  1. Generated-image eligibility: Can an image made without a camera capture be entered?
  2. Generative fill and content alteration: Are extensions, replacements, object removal, additions or rearrangements forbidden?
  3. Permitted enhancement: Are denoise, tonal correction, local adjustments, sharpening or other AI-assisted tools allowed, and is there a stated limit?
  4. Disclosure: Must entrants identify AI assistance, list tools, or describe processing?
  5. Original files and metadata: Can the organizer request RAW or camera JPEG files, EXIF data, a frame sequence or a contact sheet?
  6. Consequences: Does failure to disclose, provide files or satisfy the rule lead to rejection, elimination or another stated sanction?

Keep the comparison tied to the edition and category. World Press Photo’s camera-made requirement and limited-enhancement wording cannot be transferred to the World Photographic Cup, a local exhibition or a different category. A contest’s silence on one axis also does not answer the other five.

Check disclosure, originals and metadata requirements

A contest can allow an edit yet still require disclosure, or it can prohibit an edit and use original files to investigate compliance. Search for separate instructions headed “verification,” “technical requirements,” “original files,” “metadata” or “proof of capture.” Look for timing as well: some organizers ask for files only if an entry advances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

World Press Photo’s verification process says entrants whose images remain in the contest and are eligible to progress may be contacted during the stated judging window for camera-recorded originals. Accepted examples include a RAW file; a full-format JPEG delivered by the camera with a sequence of at least seven frames; a smartphone original with a sequence; or an unprocessed positive-film scan with a contact sheet. The organization says failure to provide required files leads to elimination, and that two independent digital analysts compare original files with contest entries. These are requirements of that contest and edition, not a universal standard. See the verification process.

Metadata is supporting evidence, not a substitute for reading the rules. If the World Photographic Cup committee asks for a RAW or JPEG with original camera EXIF data, exporting a new file or stripping metadata may make verification harder. Preserve the untouched file and do not overwrite it with an edited version. If a contest specifies a sequence, retain the neighboring frames in their original form.

Build an evidence file before you submit

Retain enough material to explain how the submitted file was made, even when the rules do not ask for it at entry.

  • The camera-original RAW or the untouched camera JPEG.
  • The final file exactly as submitted.
  • Adjacent frames or a contact sheet when they help show the sequence or context.
  • Original smartphone files when the image was captured on a phone.
  • A short log naming the software, tool or plug-in and the operation performed.
  • Export details, such as the file format and any resizing step.
  • A second copy of the originals and supporting files, for example on an external SSD stored separately from the working drive.

Do not assume that every organizer wants all of these files, and do not alter the only copy of an original to create your submission. The point is to be able to respond quickly if the rules permit a verification request. An external SSD is an optional storage method; no competition rule described here requires buying a particular drive, capacity or model.

Your edit log can be brief. Record the date, application, feature, setting or action, and whether it added, removed, reconstructed or merely adjusted captured information. If you used several programs, list them in order. Include the final export dimensions and format when those details matter to the submission portal.

A step-by-step eligibility workflow

  1. Identify the governing text. Write down the competition name, edition year, category and the official URLs for entry, manipulation and verification rules.
  2. Map your processing. List each operation in order: capture, crop, exposure or colour work, denoise, retouching, object removal, generative fill, compositing, sharpening and enlargement.
  3. Classify each operation by effect. Mark whether it preserves captured information, removes it, adds new information or reconstructs detail.
  4. Match operations to prohibitions. Check the exact wording for synthetic images, AI/CGI elements, generative fill, composites, additions, deletions, movement, retouching and upscaling.
  5. Check limits and exceptions. Note phrases such as “limited,” “not significant,” “specified adjustments,” “at the jury’s discretion” or category-specific allowances.
  6. Check procedural duties. Confirm whether disclosure, an edit list, RAW/JPEG files, original EXIF data, a frame sequence or a contact sheet is required.
  7. Preserve the evidence. Save the original, final export, supporting frames and edit log before uploading.
  8. Resolve uncertainty in writing. Send the organizer a concise description of the operation and ask whether the resulting image is eligible for the named edition and category.
  9. Archive the answer. Keep the reply with the saved rules and submit only if the response clearly covers your proposed image.

How to ask an organizer a useful question

Vague questions such as “Do you allow AI?” invite an equally vague answer. Identify the edition and category, describe the captured source and name the exact operation and result.

Common mistakes and what to do instead

Relying on a tool label

A feature called “AI” may be a content-preserving adjustment, while a conventional clone or healing tool may remove captured information. Describe the visible and informational effect.

Applying another contest’s policy

World Press Photo’s ban on synthetic images and its limited-enhancement wording cannot be transferred to the World Photographic Cup, a local exhibition or another category. Start again with that event’s current rules.

Assuming silence means permission

If a page does not mention AI, generation or manipulation, look for linked terms and ask the organizer. The absence of an accessible statement is not proof that an image is eligible.

Discarding originals after export

Some contests request camera files only after an image advances. Keep originals and relevant sequences until the judging and verification period has ended, and longer if the organizer’s terms require it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Submitting first and explaining later

Disqualification can follow a failed verification or an inability to provide required files. Resolve an ambiguous operation before the deadline, when changing the entry is still possible.

Confusing a crop with an extension

A crop removes part of the captured frame, while an extension creates pixels beyond it. Treat them separately and check whether the category permits either one.

Assuming “no new subject” means no new information

An enlargement or reconstruction can invent texture or detail without adding a recognizable object. Where rules prohibit new information, that distinction matters even if the composition looks unchanged.

Decision checklist

  • Have you read the current edition and the exact category rules?
  • Have you checked manipulation examples and verification instructions as well as the entry page?
  • Did you distinguish generation, content changes, enhancement and enlargement?
  • Does the contest require disclosure, original files, EXIF data or supporting frames?
  • Have you saved the rules and retained the RAW/JPEG, final export and edit record?
  • For any unclear operation, do you have a written answer that names the edition and category?

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I enter an AI-generated image in a photography competition?

Only if the exact edition and category rules allow synthetic or computer-generated images. Do not infer permission from silence or from another contest. Check the current terms and ask the organizer in writing if the wording is unclear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is AI denoising allowed?

Some rules allow limited denoise or other AI-powered enhancement when it does not significantly change the image, add new information or remove camera-captured information. World Press Photo gives denoise as an example, but says the organization and global jury determine the limit. That example is not a universal approval.

Are generative fill and object removal treated differently from ordinary editing?

They can be. Generative fill creates new pixels, while object removal deletes captured information. Manipulation rules may prohibit both, regardless of whether the software calls the feature AI. Check the contest’s definitions and examples.

What original files might a contest request?

Requirements vary. World Press Photo lists RAW files, full-format camera JPEGs with a sequence of at least seven frames, smartphone originals with a sequence, and unprocessed positive-film scans with a contact sheet. The World Photographic Cup 2026 rules say the committee may request RAW or JPEG files with original camera EXIF data. These are contest-specific examples, not a universal checklist.

Does a contest’s failure to mention AI mean AI edits are allowed?

No. Follow linked manipulation, technical and verification pages and ask the organizer for a written ruling. An accessible page that omits an AI statement does not establish eligibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I have to buy special storage for verification?

No purchase is universally required. Keep a second copy of originals and supporting files if practical; an external SSD is one optional method. Follow the organizer’s stated file requirements rather than buying equipment on assumption.

The Bottom Line

Eligibility depends on the exact edition, category and effect of each operation. Classify what your tools did, read the manipulation and verification pages, preserve camera originals and supporting frames, and obtain a written answer before submitting anything the rules do not clearly address.
