Check the exact game’s store page and the publisher’s support or legal pages before you pay. Separate five questions that listings often blur together: which client installs the game, which account must be linked, whether first launch needs internet, whether later launches need recurring authentication, and which features disappear offline.
A storefront’s offline switch is not a promise that every game in its catalog works without a connection. A title can be sold through one store yet open a second launcher, require an external account, or reject offline mode entirely. Use the workflow below to verify the specific PC edition and purchase channel you intend to use.
What you must verify before buying
Record each requirement separately. Labels such as “DRM-free,” “offline,” and “launcher required” are not interchangeable.

Find out whether the store application is needed only to download files or also to install, update, and launch them. Check for a second publisher launcher that opens after you click Play. A game can require both the store client and a publisher client even when the store page highlights only the first one.

Account and linking
Look for a required store account, publisher account, account linking step, subscription entitlement, or serial-key registration. The account used to purchase a game may not be the same account the game uses for authentication.
Activation
Determine exactly when a connection is needed: downloading, installing, unlocking the files, first launch, or every launch after a period offline. “Internet required” without a timing qualification is not enough to make a buying decision.
Offline launch
Verify whether the game starts after a successful online setup and whether it must remain installed and fully updated. Some clients offer an offline mode only for supported games, not as a universal catalog feature.
Offline scope
Identify the modes that remain usable. Multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, leaderboards, authentication-dependent campaigns, and other online services may stop working even when the executable opens.
Edition and storefront
Requirements can differ between standard, deluxe, subscription, remastered, regional, and publisher-direct editions. Confirm that every statement applies to the exact PC edition and seller shown on your checkout page.
A step-by-step pre-purchase check
- Open the exact product page. Confirm the operating system, edition, region, and seller. Do not rely on a franchise page or a general store policy.
- Read the system-requirements and feature sections. Search the page for terms such as
internet connection, online activation,third-party account, launcher,DRM, andsingle-player. Save the wording if it is important to your decision. - Inspect the publisher’s official support pages. Search the publisher’s site for the game title plus
offline, activation, account linking, andlauncher. Prefer a title-specific article over a general legal page. - Read the applicable EULA or legal disclosure. General terms can reveal possible DRM, installation limits, account obligations, and online-unlock conditions. Treat them as a warning to investigate the game page, not as proof that every title has every restriction.
- Write down the client chain. For example: store client → publisher launcher → game. Note which applications must be installed and which accounts must be linked.
- Classify connection requirements by timing. Mark each as download-only, first-run activation, periodic check, or persistent connection. If the documentation does not state the timing, record it as unknown rather than assuming it is offline-friendly.
- List what offline mode removes. Check for multiplayer, cloud synchronization, achievements, leaderboards, social features, and downloadable content that may depend on a server.
- Check current refund rules for the purchase channel. A refund window is a fallback for testing, not evidence that the game supports offline play. Rules differ between stores, direct sales, subscriptions, and physical retailers.
Storefront policies are signals, not guarantees
The following comparison shows what the major PC storefront documentation says at the platform level. “Varies by game” is intentional: the individual product page remains the authority for a purchase.
| Store or channel | Technical DRM or copy protection | Store client | External publisher launcher | Account or linking | First-run activation | Recurring or persistent internet | Offline play after setup | Features that may stop offline | Standalone installer |

| GOG | GOG’s developer QA rules require games to be DRM-free; the documentation states, “DRM-free is a MUST, copy protection is a NO.” | Galaxy is optional for the offline requirement described by GOG’s QA rules. | Check the individual listing for any separate account or service. | Store account is used for purchase and download; game-specific online services can still have accounts. | The QA rule is designed for offline play, but the listing remains the place to check exact content. | Persistent internet is inconsistent with the stated DRM-free offline requirement, but online features can still need a connection. | GOG’s developer documentation says games must be playable offline without Galaxy. | Multiplayer, cloud functions, achievements, and other network services may still require internet. | Whether a browser-downloadable standalone installer is offered is not stated by the QA rule; check the game page. |
The table summarizes platform documentation, not independent testing. Policies, launchers, and game builds can change, so recheck the current title page before purchase.

How the main PC storefronts describe offline mode
Steam: prepare while connected
Steam’s support page says, “Most games require an initial start-up while connected to the Steam Network before they will work in offline mode.” Start the game online, allow required updates and redistributables to finish, and only then test Steam’s offline mode.
Steam also states that games requiring an active connection or using an external launcher will not work in Steam Offline Mode. Therefore, a game’s presence in the Steam catalog does not establish that it can launch without internet. Look for a publisher launcher, a login prompt, or an online-only requirement on the game’s own support page.
Offline mode is a client feature. It does not bypass the game’s DRM, server authentication, or a publisher account check.
Epic Games Store: supported single-player titles only
Epic’s support article states, “Not all games support Offline Mode.” Its instructions apply to supported, already-installed games. Epic identifies multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, and other online services as features that may be unavailable while offline.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before disconnecting, sign in, install the game, apply updates, and launch it once. If the game does not appear as supported for Offline Mode or still requests an online service, assume that the offline claim is unproven until the title-specific documentation says otherwise.
EA app: a stated 30-day online-launch window
EA’s app guidance says a game will work offline for 30 days since it was last launched online. This is a platform support rule, not an independent measurement and not a promise that every EA title has identical behavior. A game with a persistent server requirement, online entitlement check, or online-only mode can still require a connection.
Launch the exact title online before travel or another period without internet. If the game is supplied through another store, check both the store’s account rules and EA’s requirements; the purchase channel can change which clients and links are involved.

Ubisoft: read the EULA, then verify the title
Ubisoft’s End User Licence Agreement says DRM may be installed, may limit the number of installations, and may require an online connection to unlock a game during installation or first launch. It also says a Ubisoft account and Connect client may be required.

GOG: the strongest store-level offline signal
GOG’s developer QA documentation requires games to be DRM-free and playable offline without Galaxy. That makes the store a useful starting point when avoiding client-enforced DRM is your priority.
The requirement does not make every feature local. Multiplayer servers, cloud synchronization, achievements, and other network services can still need internet, and the individual listing determines the exact edition, bonus content, and online features you receive.
DRM, launcher, account, and activation: what each term means
DRM or copy protection
Digital rights management is a technical control that checks whether software is authorized to run. It can be built into the game, handled by a store client, or supplied by a publisher. “DRM-free” addresses copy-protection checks; it does not automatically mean that online multiplayer or cloud services work offline.
Store client
A store client distributes files, applies updates, verifies ownership, and may provide cloud or social features. A client’s offline switch only controls the client’s own behavior. It cannot make a game with an independent online requirement work offline.
External publisher launcher
A second launcher can add another login, installation step, update process, and authentication dependency. If a game opens a publisher client, test that entire chain offline rather than testing only the store window.
Account linking
Linking connects your store entitlement to a publisher account. It may be a one-time setup or a continuing check. Record which email or account owns the entitlement; losing access to the linked account can prevent activation even when the game files remain on your drive.
Online activation
Activation can occur at installation, first launch, after a major update, or periodically. Ask for the exact trigger. A one-time first-run check is materially different from persistent authentication.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Testing offline without wasting a refund window
Testing is most useful after you have documented the official requirements and while a refund option remains available. Follow the purchase channel’s current terms; policies can change.
Steam purchases
Steam’s common refund guidance describes requests made within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. These are conditions in Steam’s policy, not a guarantee that every request will be approved in every circumstance. Read the current Common Refund Questions page before relying on them.
Other channels
EA says it cannot process purchases made on other platforms or from physical retailers. For an EA purchase, consult EA’s refund instructions; for another seller, use that seller’s policy. A refund route is limited by the channel that took payment.
A controlled offline test
- Install the exact edition while connected.
- Sign in to every required client and complete account linking.
- Launch the game and reach the main menu once.
- Close the game normally so credentials and licenses can be cached.
- Switch off Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet, or use the operating system’s network controls.
- Start the store client and publisher launcher, then launch the game.
- Record the result, including any error text, and test a representative single-player save.
- Reconnect before attempting updates, cloud synchronization, multiplayer, or a refund request.
This test does not prove that a future patch will preserve offline behavior. It only establishes what the installed build does under the tested account and edition.
Common buying decisions
You need a laptop game for travel
Prefer a title whose official page explicitly supports offline single-player after an online setup. Complete activation and updates before leaving home, then test with the network disabled. Confirm that the save location is local if cloud synchronization will be unavailable.
You only care about multiplayer
Offline support is not the deciding feature. Verify the game’s server status, account linking, and launcher requirements instead, because an offline-capable single-player mode does not imply that multiplayer works without authentication.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou want no second launcher
Search the exact listing and publisher support pages for third-party launcher language. A store’s own client requirement does not tell you whether another client opens after purchase.
You want a standalone installer
Look for explicit browser-download or offline-installer instructions from the seller. “Playable offline” describes runtime behavior, not necessarily the way files are delivered. GOG’s QA rule concerns offline play without Galaxy; it does not by itself state that every title provides a standalone installer.
You are considering a subscription
Separate entitlement from installation. A subscription can require periodic account validation even when the installed files are unchanged. Check the subscription’s current terms and the game’s own support page.
Red flags and how to resolve them
- “Offline mode supported” appears only in a store help article. Find the game-specific support page; platform support is conditional.
- The listing says “internet connection required” with no timing. Ask whether it applies to download, activation, every launch, or online features.
- A publisher launcher appears during setup. Add its account, update, and offline behavior to your checklist.
- The EULA mentions DRM or installation limits. Treat that as a prompt to verify the exact title, not as proof of permanent online play.
- Reviews disagree with the official page. Check the review date, edition, store, and game version. Player reports can expose failures, but current official requirements should control your purchase decision.
- An update breaks offline launch. Reconnect, verify files, complete the update, and retest. If offline access is essential, document the error and use the applicable refund policy before exceeding its conditions.
What can change after you buy
Launcher behavior, account policies, refund terms, and game requirements can change through updates or service decisions. Vendor documentation describes the provider’s current policy, not a permanent guarantee for every future build. Keep the exact support-page URL and check it again before a long trip or an operating-system reinstall.
Recommended Free Tools
The safest buying decision comes from matching the game’s exact edition to your own requirement: no external launcher, one-time activation, periodic authentication, or fully local single-player play. If the documentation leaves one of those points unstated, treat it as unknown and choose only when that uncertainty is acceptable.
