For an NGX-listed company, calculate market capitalization by multiplying the share price by the number of outstanding shares: market cap = price × outstanding shares. Find the price, share count and trading statistics in Nigerian Exchange (NGX) data, then confirm that all figures refer to the same security and date. NGX’s online Data Library labels its displayed information 30 minutes delayed, so it should not be described as live.

What the two figures tell you

Market capitalization

Market capitalization is the market value investors assign to a company’s outstanding equity at a particular price. For one listed security, the calculation is:

Market capitalization = current share price × outstanding shares

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Outstanding shares” means shares that have been issued and fully paid. It is not the same as the company’s authorized-share limit, which is the maximum number registered for issuance. Using the authorized figure can materially overstate the company’s capitalization.

Capitalization changes when the quoted price changes. It can also change when a company issues additional shares, converts debt into equity, buys back shares, or otherwise changes the number of shares outstanding. For the total exchange market, listings and delistings also affect aggregate capitalization.

The result is a point-in-time figure, not a permanent description of the company. If the market price moves while the outstanding-share count stays unchanged, the market capitalization moves in the same direction. If the share count changes, the result can change even when the quoted price appears stable. This is why the date and security identifier belong beside every capitalization figure.

Trading volume

Trading volume is the number of shares exchanged during a stated period, normally a trading day when you are checking a daily quote. It measures activity, not the company’s value. NGX data separates traded volume (shares), traded value (currency amount) and number of transactions (deals). Always identify which field you are reporting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, a report that says a stock traded 250,000 shares is reporting volume. A naira amount for those trades is traded value, while the count of completed deals is the number of transactions. Those three numbers can describe the same session but answer different questions. Do not place a currency amount in a column headed “volume,” and do not assume a larger deal count necessarily equals a larger number of shares.

Use NGX’s Data Library for a direct lookup

The NGX Data Library is the most direct starting point for an NGX-listed security. Its listed resources include:

  • Daily Official List (Equities)
  • Market Capitalization
  • Shares Outstanding
  • Daily Summary and other market statistics

The current library display is marked “30 MINUTES DELAYED DATA” (NGX Data Library, accessed October 13, 2026). That label applies to the information displayed on the page; it is not a promise of real-time streaming. A downloadable end-of-day report and a delayed online display are different products, so retain the date and product name with every figure you save.

When saving a result, record the page or download title, the ticker, the displayed date and the time at which you accessed it. A delayed observation can still be useful for education, after-session comparisons and recordkeeping, but the delay must remain visible in your notes. Never remove it when copying the number into a spreadsheet or report.

Step-by-step: check a company’s market cap and volume

  1. Identify the exact security. Record the company name and NGX ticker. Make sure you are looking at an equity rather than a bond, fund or another instrument with a similar name.
  2. Open the NGX Data Library. Choose the equity data area and locate the Daily Official List (Equities), Market Capitalization, Shares Outstanding and Daily Summary resources.
  3. Set or record the trading date. Write down the date shown by the download or display before copying any numbers. If the page is delayed, record the delay as well as the calendar date.
  4. Find the price. Use the security’s current or closing price from the same date and instrument. A price from one session should not be paired silently with a share count or capitalization figure from another.
  5. Find outstanding shares. Use the Shares Outstanding resource or the corresponding field in the official equity list. Do not substitute authorized shares.
  6. Calculate the capitalization when necessary. Multiply the price by outstanding shares, preserving the currency (naira) and the date. If NGX already supplies a market-cap field, use it as the reported value and use the multiplication as a check.
  7. Find traded volume. In the Daily Summary or relevant equity data, select the traded-volume field for that ticker and date. Do not copy traded value or transaction count into a volume column.
  8. Save the provenance. Keep the source name, resource title, date, delay status and units beside the result. This prevents a delayed snapshot from later being mistaken for a live quote.

If the download contains several securities, filter by ticker rather than relying only on a company-name search. Before calculating, check that the price is expressed in naira per share and that the share count is a number of shares rather than a display scaled in thousands or millions. Keep the original downloaded row unchanged and perform calculations in separate columns.

Worked capitalization example

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Nigeria gives an illustrative calculation: 1,000,000 ordinary shares multiplied by a ₦20.00 market price equals ₦20,000,000.00. If the share count stays at 1,000,000 and the price falls to ₦15.00, the calculated capitalization becomes ₦15,000,000.00.

These are teaching figures from the SEC’s investor-education material published November 13, 2023, not a current quote for an NGX company. For a real stock, replace both inputs with the values for the same security and reporting date. A calculator can perform the multiplication, but it cannot supply an authoritative price, share count or volume.

The example also shows why a market-cap change does not automatically mean that the company issued or cancelled shares. With one million shares unchanged, moving from ₦20 to ₦15 reduces the computed value by ₦5 million solely because of the price movement. Conversely, an issuance or conversion can alter capitalization even if the price input has not moved between the two observations.

How to check historical or more detailed volume

Historical data through NGX X-DataPortal

NGX describes its X-DataPortal as a source for historical and real-time market products. Its Equity Level 1 Historical data includes historical price fields, OHLC information, current-price fields, traded volume and number of trades. The portal describes free access to seven days of historical price data alongside other reports, while additional products may have different access conditions.

For a historical check, select the equity, specify the date range and export or record the traded-volume field. Confirm whether the result is a daily total or another interval before comparing it with a daily summary. Product fields, retention periods and access terms can change; verify the current description shown by NGX when you use the portal.

A historical series is useful when you need to compare activity across several sessions, but every row still needs a date and field definition. If one file reports “number of trades” and another reports “traded volume,” they cannot be joined as though they were the same measure. Keep the units in the column heading and preserve the original interval stated by the product.

Real-time products

NGX describes Equity Level 1 Real-Time data for authorized clients. The real-time field set includes traded volume, traded value, transaction count and price fields. Authorization and commercial conditions apply, so the existence of a real-time product does not mean every visitor receives an unrestricted live feed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your use case depends on the latest trade during an open session, confirm the delivery timing and authorization for the specific product or channel. A delayed public display cannot be upgraded to real time merely by refreshing the page. Likewise, do not describe a vendor feed as NGX-authorized unless that status has been confirmed under NGX’s current market-data arrangements.

Daily Official List

The SEC describes the Daily Official List as a document for quoted equities and debt that is updated daily after trading. Its equity section contains the current market price and other company or security information, making it useful for an end-of-day lookup. That end-of-day document should still be distinguished from the NGX Data Library’s online display, which carries the 30-minute delay label.

Choose a data source by the question you need answered

Need Suitable NGX source or product What to verify
Current delayed snapshot NGX Data Library The page’s 30-minute delay, displayed date, ticker and units.
End-of-day equity reference Daily Official List (Equities) That the document is for the intended trading day and security.
Market-cap and share-count inputs Market Capitalization and Shares Outstanding downloads Whether the figures are reported directly or require a price-times-shares calculation.
Daily activity Daily Summary or equity statistics That you selected traded volume, rather than traded value or number of transactions.
Several days or a longer history X-DataPortal historical products Date range, available fields, download limits and whether the data are delayed or end-of-day.
Live or near-live monitoring X-DataPortal real-time product or an NGX-authorized channel Authorization, delivery timing, field definitions and current commercial terms.

Compare sources on five dimensions: recency (delayed, end-of-day or real-time), period (a current snapshot or historical series), fields (price, volume, value, trades, shares and market cap), access (open download, limited free report, authorized client or paid product) and provenance (NGX itself or an authorized vendor). A source that is excellent for an end-of-day article may be unsuitable for intraday monitoring.

NGX says it supplies real-time, end-of-day, reference and historical data directly or through authorized vendors under its Market Data Agreement. A third-party feed should not be called officially authorized until that status has been confirmed, and “free” should not be assumed for every product.

Keep dates, units and share counts aligned

Match the date

Suppose you take a Monday closing price and pair it with a Friday share count. The arithmetic is valid but the result may not represent either date if an issuance, conversion or other corporate action occurred between them. Put the date next to every input and state explicitly when a source uses a different date.

Match the security

Use the same ticker, share class and listing. A company can have more than one security, and a similarly named instrument can produce an entirely different price, share count or volume.

Match the units

Prices are normally quoted in naira per share, outstanding shares are a count, traded volume is shares, and traded value is naira. Do not report a naira value as “volume,” and do not divide or multiply by a display’s unit scale without checking the column heading.

Handle corporate actions

New equity issuance and conversion of debt to equity can increase outstanding shares. Buybacks or cancellations can reduce them. A stock split or consolidation can change the per-share price and share count together. When a result looks discontinuous, check the issuer’s corporate-action information and the effective date before concluding that trading alone caused the change.

The SEC’s definition is especially important here: outstanding shares are issued and fully paid shares. An authorized-share ceiling may remain unchanged while the outstanding count changes, so a company’s constitutional share limit is not a substitute for the number actually issued and paid.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Using authorized shares: Replace the authorized ceiling with issued and fully paid outstanding shares.
  • Calling delayed data live: Report the NGX Data Library display as 30 minutes delayed and identify the observation time.
  • Mixing dates: Re-run the calculation with price and share count from the same date, or disclose the mismatch prominently.
  • Confusing volume, value and deals: Label the field and unit in the table or sentence—for example, “traded volume, shares” or “traded value, ₦.”
  • Using a calculator as evidence: Cite the NGX or SEC source for the inputs; the calculator only performs arithmetic.
  • Assuming every feed is free: Check whether the selected report is an open download, a limited free report, an authorized-client service or a paid product.
  • Treating a vendor as automatically official: Confirm that the vendor is authorized under NGX’s current market-data arrangements.
  • Rounding too early: Keep the full share count and quoted price through the multiplication, then round the displayed naira result consistently.
  • Dropping the interval: State whether volume is a daily total, a historical interval or a real-time observation.
  • Copying a stale file: Retain the download date and displayed trading date so a later reader can distinguish an old snapshot from a current figure.

A reproducible worksheet for your records

For each observation, create one row with these columns:

  • Company name and NGX ticker
  • Share class or security type
  • Trading date and observation time
  • Price per share (₦)
  • Outstanding shares
  • Calculated market capitalization (₦)
  • Traded volume (shares)
  • Traded value (₦), if needed
  • Number of transactions, if needed
  • Source resource, delay status and download date

Then calculate the market cap in a spreadsheet with a formula such as =price_cell*shares_cell. Keep the source values unchanged in separate columns so another person can reproduce the result and identify whether a later revision came from the market data or from your arithmetic.

Add a notes column for a corporate action, a changed share count, a missing field or an unusual unit. If NGX supplies a market-cap figure as well as the inputs, retain both: the supplied figure is the reported value, while your multiplication is a transparent check. Do not overwrite the original values with rounded results.

When a delayed figure is good enough—and when it is not

Delayed data is generally suitable for

  • Learning how capitalization is calculated
  • Comparing companies after the trading session
  • Building an educational spreadsheet
  • Reviewing historical daily activity when the date is clear

Use a more timely or specialized product when

  • You must monitor price and volume during an open session
  • You need intraday rather than daily totals
  • You require a long historical series for analysis
  • You need machine-readable delivery or customized fields
  • A time-sensitive decision depends on the latest trade

NGX’s documented product categories cover these different requirements, but the exact fields, delay, retention and access conditions belong to the individual product. Check those terms before relying on a feed operationally.

Reporting the result clearly

A concise, auditable report can read: “As of [date], the NGX-listed [company] had a share price of ₦X and Y outstanding shares, implying a market capitalization of ₦Z. Traded volume was V shares; traded value was ₦W across T transactions. The figures came from [NGX resource] and were [30 minutes delayed/end-of-day/real-time], as applicable.” Put variable values in your own worksheet or report; do not omit the date, field name or timing.

This format prevents the most common misunderstanding: market capitalization is a value derived from price and shares, while volume is the number of shares traded during a period. They answer different questions and should never be used interchangeably.

Quick verification checklist

  1. Is the instrument an NGX-listed equity with the correct ticker and share class?
  2. Do the price and outstanding-share count refer to the same date?
  3. Did you use issued and fully paid outstanding shares rather than authorized shares?
  4. Is the reported activity field explicitly traded volume, not traded value or transaction count?
  5. Have you recorded whether the display is 30 minutes delayed, end-of-day or real-time?
  6. Are naira amounts and share counts clearly labelled and consistently rounded?
  7. If a vendor supplied the data, have you confirmed its NGX authorization and the applicable terms?

Frequently asked questions

Is market capitalization the same as the company’s authorized share capital?

No. Market capitalization uses the current market price multiplied by outstanding shares. Authorized shares are the registered ceiling for possible issuance. The SEC distinguishes that ceiling from shares issued and fully paid, so using authorized shares can overstate the calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I call the NGX Data Library quote live?

No. The NGX Data Library display is labelled “30 MINUTES DELAYED DATA.” Describe it as delayed and retain the displayed date. A separate real-time product may exist for authorized clients, but access and commercial conditions apply.

Where can I find a stock’s daily volume?

Start with the Daily Summary or relevant NGX equity statistics and select the traded-volume field for the ticker and date. The Data Library also lists Daily Official List, Market Capitalization and Shares Outstanding resources. Check the heading carefully because traded value and number of transactions are separate fields.

What if NGX already publishes market capitalization?

Use the published field as the reported figure and multiply the same-date price by outstanding shares as a reasonableness check. Keep the source row and your calculation separate so a later revision can be traced to the data rather than confused with an arithmetic error.

Can I combine a Monday price with a Friday share count?

You can multiply them, but the result may not represent either date if shares changed between the observations. Use matching dates whenever possible. If different dates are unavoidable, disclose both dates and check for issuance, conversion, buyback, cancellation or another corporate action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a free historical report provide a complete long-term series?

Not necessarily. NGX describes free access to seven days of historical price data through the X-DataPortal, while other products can have different fields, retention periods and access conditions. Confirm the current product description and date range rather than assuming unlimited history.

Is traded value a better measure than volume?

Neither is universally “better”; they measure different things. Traded volume counts shares, traded value measures the naira amount exchanged, and transaction count measures deals. Choose the field that matches your question and label it explicitly.

Can a calculator or spreadsheet provide an authoritative market figure?

No. It can multiply the price by the outstanding-share count and help reproduce the arithmetic. NGX or another properly identified data source must supply the price, share count and volume, along with the date and timing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula for a Nigerian stock’s market capitalization?

Multiply the current price per share by the number of outstanding, issued and fully paid shares. Do not use the authorized-share ceiling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I distinguish volume from value?

Volume is the number of shares traded. Traded value is the naira amount, and number of transactions is the deal count. NGX reports them as separate fields.

How delayed is the NGX Data Library?

Its displayed data are labelled 30 minutes delayed. A separate NGX real-time product may require authorized-client access and different commercial terms.

What should I record with a downloaded figure?

Save the ticker, security type, trading date, observation time, units, source resource, download date and delay status.

What is the SEC Nigeria example?

The SEC illustrates 1,000,000 ordinary shares × ₦20.00 = ₦20,000,000.00, and ₦15,000,000.00 when the price falls to ₦15.00 with the same share count. These are teaching figures, not a current quote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use the NGX ticker, same-date price and outstanding-share count to calculate market capitalization, and use NGX’s explicitly labelled traded-volume field for activity. Keep traded value and transaction count separate, record the 30-minute delay on the Data Library display, and verify access and authorization terms for historical or real-time products.
