Use the mutual-fund scheme’s portfolio disclosure when you want to know whether a particular scheme owns an Indian company’s shares. Use the company’s NSE or BSE shareholding-pattern filing when you want the company-level ownership breakdown. These are different disclosures: one reports a scheme’s investments, while the other reports how the issuer classifies its shareholders. Always record the relevant portfolio or “as on” date beside any figure.
First decide which shareholding question you are asking
“How much of this company is held by mutual funds?” can mean two different things. Your source and interpretation depend on which answer you need.
| Question | Correct source | What the data covers |
|---|---|---|
| Does one particular mutual-fund scheme hold the company, and what does it report holding? | The scheme’s portfolio disclosure from its asset-management company (AMC) or the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) | One scheme, for a stated reporting period |
| How does the listed company report its shareholders by category? | The company’s shareholding-pattern filing on NSE or BSE | The issuer’s ownership categories for a stated “as on” date |
Do not treat a company-level “mutual funds” category as a list of every individual scheme. Unless the filing supplies scheme-level detail, it cannot establish which specific funds own the shares.

Identify the company precisely
Write down the company’s legal name and, if it is listed, its exchange symbol. Names can be similar, and a symbol makes the exchange search more reliable. If the portfolio file supplies an ISIN (International Securities Identification Number), use that identifier to distinguish the security from similarly named instruments.

Choose a reporting period
Portfolio disclosures are periodic, not live price-terminal data. Decide whether you need the latest available month or half-year, or a historical period for comparison. For an exchange filing, note the issuer’s “as on” date rather than relying only on the day you downloaded the file.
Keep the scope written down
Before recording a number, label it either “scheme portfolio” or “issuer shareholding pattern.” This single note prevents the most common error: presenting a scheme’s position as though it were the company’s entire mutual-fund ownership, or presenting an issuer category as though it identified an individual scheme.
Route A: check a particular mutual-fund scheme’s holding
This is the appropriate route when your question names a scheme, such as whether a particular equity, balanced, or index scheme holds the company.
Recommended Free Tools
Step 1: Open an official portfolio-disclosure page
- Start with AMFI’s mutual-fund portfolio-disclosure facility at www.amfiindia.com, or open the relevant AMC’s own disclosure page.
- Select the fund or scheme. Schemes with similar names may have different plans or options, so choose the exact scheme shown in the disclosure list.
- Select the applicable reporting period. The available periods depend on what the AMC and AMFI have published.
Step 2: Search the downloadable portfolio
Open the spreadsheet or other downloadable portfolio file and search for the company name. If the name appears more than once, compare the security description and ISIN. Searching by ISIN is the safer way to disambiguate ordinary shares from another security or a similarly named issuer.
Step 3: Read the holding in context
Record the value exactly as the file presents it and copy the portfolio date into your notes. A portfolio may show a security description, ISIN, quantity, market value, or percentage depending on the AMC’s format. Do not create a missing field by estimation. If the file reports only a value or only a percentage, describe only that reported measure.
Check the column heading before copying a number. A quantity, a rupee market value and a percentage of the scheme’s assets are different measures. Keep the unit, currency and any stated scale with the number; a figure without its heading is not an auditable holding.
Step 4: State what the result proves
- If the company appears, the selected scheme’s disclosure reports a position for that reporting period.
- If the company does not appear, the file does not report a holding for that period. It does not prove that the scheme has never owned the shares or that no related scheme owns them.
- If you need the fund with the largest reported position, repeat the same search across the schemes and periods you intend to compare, using the same measure and date. A search phrase such as “which mutual fund has the highest holding of a particular stock?” describes this task, but it is not itself an official ownership statistic.
How often portfolio data is published
A SEBI-hosted 2025 disclosure document says mutual funds and AMCs disclose each scheme’s portfolio, together with ISINs, as of the last day of the month or half-year, as applicable, on the AMC website and AMFI within 10 days after the close of that month or half-year. The document describes a user-friendly, downloadable spreadsheet format.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe 10-day period is a stated publication requirement, not a guarantee that every website will always upload on schedule. If the expected period is missing, check the AMC’s page, AMFI’s current period selector, and any notice explaining a delay. Never label a prior period as the current position simply because it is the newest file you found.

The date “as of the last day” identifies the snapshot, while the upload date identifies when readers could access it. Keep those concepts separate in notes and reporting. A file downloaded in a new month can still describe holdings at the preceding month-end or half-year-end.
Route B: check the company’s reported shareholder categories
Use this route when you want the listed issuer’s overall shareholding pattern, including the category in which it reports mutual funds.
Step 1: Locate the issuer filing
- Search the company or symbol in the NSE corporate-filings area, or use the corresponding BSE shareholding-pattern filing route. SEBI’s corporate-filings directory points users to these exchange pages.
- Confirm that the result is a shareholding-pattern filing for the correct company, rather than a price, financial-results, or corporate-action document.
Step 2: Check the dates shown by the exchange
NSE’s interface identifies the company, status, date, and download fields. Inspect the “as on” date first. Also note the submission date and, where shown, the revision date. A later submission or revision date does not change the ownership date covered by the filing.
Step 3: Download the structured file
The NSE interface provides a CSV download and an XBRL file link. Use the CSV when you want to sort or filter the reported categories in a spreadsheet. XBRL can be useful when you need the filing’s structured facts or want to preserve the exchange’s machine-readable representation. BSE provides a corresponding shareholding-pattern filing route, although the page layout and download controls may differ.
Step 4: Interpret the mutual-fund category carefully
Read the category label and the date together. The filing answers how the company reports ownership by category for that date. It does not automatically identify each scheme, each AMC, or the quantity held by a named scheme. To obtain that level of detail, return to the scheme portfolio route and open the relevant disclosures.
If a filing has been revised, use the version marked as current or revised for the same “as on” date and retain the revision information. Do not compare a revised issuer file with an unrevised copy without recording that difference. The exchange’s status, submission date and revision date are useful metadata even when your main result is the category total.
What each disclosure can and cannot tell you
A scheme portfolio line is evidence about the position reported by that scheme at one snapshot date. It is not a promise that the scheme still held the shares on the day you read the file, and it is not evidence about another scheme with a similar name. A missing line is likewise limited: it says the selected file did not report the company for that period, not that the fund has never invested in it.
An issuer filing aggregates ownership into the categories used by the company’s shareholding-pattern disclosure. It can answer the company-level question for the filing’s “as on” date, but it may not identify the underlying schemes. Do not reverse-engineer scheme identities by dividing a category total or by matching a few selected portfolio files. Unless the filing supplies that detail, the category remains an issuer-level figure.

Neither route should be described as a live position. The official material describes periodic disclosures and publication windows, so a current price, a later trade or a later portfolio change may not appear until a subsequent filing.
Why the two numbers may not match
| Comparison point | Scheme portfolio | Issuer shareholding pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | One selected mutual-fund scheme | The company’s reported ownership categories |
| Date | Portfolio date, normally the last day of the published month or half-year | Issuer “as on” date shown in the exchange filing |
| Publication timing | AMC/AMFI disclosure published after the period closes; SEBI-hosted material describes a within-10-days window | Exchange filing has its own submission and possible revision dates |
| Security identity | May include an ISIN and security description | Uses the issuer’s shareholding-pattern categories and filing fields |
| Best use | Finding whether a named scheme reports a position | Understanding the company-wide category breakdown |
These sources can cover different dates and different populations of holders. Even when the dates look close, do not add scheme figures and compare the result with the issuer’s category as if both were constructed from the same data set. The disclosures are complementary, not interchangeable.
How to compare reporting periods
For a month-to-month or half-year comparison, put the portfolio date or issuer “as on” date in its own column. Keep the publication, submission and revision dates in separate columns. A change between two numbers may reflect a new snapshot, a revised filing, a different scheme selection or a changed unit rather than a trading event you can date from the download alone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the same security identifier wherever possible. If one file uses a company name and another uses an ISIN, verify that they refer to the same security before calculating a change. Compare quantity with quantity, market value with market value, and percentage with percentage; do not rank unlike measures together.
How to document a result so it remains auditable
Use a short record for every figure you save:
- Company: legal name and exchange symbol, if applicable.
- Security identity: name and ISIN when the file provides one.
- Source type: named scheme portfolio or issuer shareholding pattern.
- Scheme or issuer: the exact scheme name, or the company filing source.
- Reporting date: portfolio date or “as on” date.
- Publication details: exchange submission date and revision date when shown; for a portfolio, the file’s publication period.
- Reported measure: quantity, market value, percentage, or category total—using the label in the source.
- File name: preserve the downloaded CSV, XBRL, or spreadsheet name if you need to reproduce the check.
This record makes it clear whether a later change reflects a new portfolio period, an exchange revision, a different scheme, or a different definition of ownership. Save the relevant page or file alongside your notes when possible, because portal layouts and available periods can change.
Checking several schemes or finding the largest reported holder
No single scheme disclosure page establishes which fund has the highest holding across the market. To make that comparison responsibly, define the universe first: for example, a specified AMC, a set of schemes, or all schemes for which you can obtain the same reporting period. Then:
- Collect each scheme’s portfolio for the identical period, or mark periods that differ.
- Match the company by ISIN where available; do not rely only on a shortened security name.
- Choose one comparison measure—such as reported quantity, market value, or portfolio percentage—and do not mix them.
- Record “not found” separately from “zero.” A security omitted from a file is not proof that its holding was zero unless the file’s format and notes establish that interpretation.
- Sort only after checking that all figures use the same currency, units, and date.
If your question is instead the company’s total mutual-fund ownership, use the issuer filing’s mutual-fund category and quote the category exactly as reported. Do not sum selected schemes and call the result company-wide unless you have established that the selected files cover every relevant holder and use compatible dates and definitions.
When ranking schemes, preserve the list of schemes searched and the period selected. Otherwise, “largest holder” can be misleading: a scheme omitted from the search universe, or a file from a different month, can change the ranking. State whether you ranked quantity, market value or portfolio percentage, because each produces a different interpretation.

Common problems and fixes
The company name returns no result
- Try the listed legal name and exchange symbol.
- Search the portfolio by ISIN if one is available.
- Check whether you selected the correct reporting period and scheme plan.
- Confirm that you are searching the security description column rather than a sheet containing only summary totals.
The exchange page shows several dates
Use the “as on” date to describe the ownership period. Keep the submission date and revision date as metadata. If a revision exists, use the revised file and say that it is a revision rather than silently substituting it.
You found only an old portfolio
Portfolio publication is periodic. Check both AMFI and the AMC, then verify the period label. Report the date plainly; do not call the old file a live holding.
The issuer filing lists mutual funds but no scheme names
That is a scope limitation of the issuer-level disclosure. Use the named schemes’ own portfolio files for scheme-level identities instead of trying to infer them from the category total.

Compare ISIN, security type, and description. Different lines can represent different securities or classifications. If the file does not make the distinction clear, report the ambiguity rather than combining the lines without evidence.
CSV and XBRL appear different
Check the filing date, revision status, units, and category labels before concluding that the values conflict. A revised filing or a different representation can explain a difference. Preserve both files if you need to investigate the discrepancy.
The period selector or portal layout has changed
Official pages can change their controls and newest available periods. Follow the current AMFI, AMC, NSE or BSE labels, and record the period shown in the downloaded file rather than relying on an old set of navigation instructions.

Final checklist
- Did you decide whether you need a scheme portfolio or an issuer shareholding pattern?
- Did you identify the company by legal name and symbol?
- Did you use the ISIN when the portfolio supplied one?
- Did you select and record the correct reporting period or “as on” date?
- Did you preserve NSE submission and revision dates where applicable?
- Did you distinguish a missing line from a confirmed zero?
- Did you avoid presenting one scheme’s figure as the company’s total mutual-fund ownership?
- Did you state whether your result is scheme-level or issuer-level?
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use an NSE or BSE shareholding pattern to identify a particular mutual-fund scheme?
Usually no. The exchange filing reports the issuer’s ownership categories. If it does not name schemes, use the exact scheme’s AMFI or AMC portfolio disclosure.

Is a mutual-fund portfolio a live holding?
No. It is a periodic snapshot, generally dated to the last day of the published month or half-year. Always show that portfolio date.

What does the 10-day publication period mean?
A SEBI-hosted 2025 disclosure document describes publication on the AMC and AMFI websites within 10 days after the applicable month-end or half-year-end. It is a stated timing requirement, not a promise that every upload will appear on schedule.
Which date should I quote from an NSE filing?
Quote the filing’s “as on” date for the ownership period. Keep the submission date and any revision date as additional metadata.
What if the company appears twice in a portfolio spreadsheet?
Compare the ISIN, security description and security type. Do not combine lines unless the file clearly establishes that they are the same security.

Not safely unless you have established that the files cover every relevant holder and use compatible dates, units and definitions. For company-wide ownership, quote the issuer filing’s mutual-fund category.
How do I find the mutual fund with the highest holding of a stock?
Define the scheme universe and one reporting period, collect each scheme’s file, match the company by ISIN where possible, choose one measure such as quantity or market value, and rank only comparable figures.
Does a missing company name mean the scheme owns zero shares?
Not necessarily. It means the selected file did not report that company for the period. Treat “not found” as distinct from a confirmed zero unless the file’s format and notes support a zero interpretation.
The Bottom Line
Use AMFI or the AMC for a named scheme’s reported position, and NSE or BSE for the listed company’s category-level ownership filing. Match the company and ISIN, record the portfolio or “as on” date, preserve submission and revision details, and never present one disclosure’s scope as the other’s.
