The reliable way to check a microSD card is to run a sequential read/write benchmark through a known-compatible reader, record the host and reader, and compare the measured MB/s with the exact card model and capacity’s datasheet. If you also suspect fake capacity, run a separate full-space write-and-verify test; that test writes across the card and is not a read-only speed check.

What a speed test can—and cannot—tell you

A benchmark measures transfer performance for one card, reader, host connection and workload. It does not reveal a universal speed that the card will achieve in every camera, phone or computer. A result can be limited by the reader, USB port, bus mode, operating system, file system, available free space, background activity or the test configuration.

For most card-to-computer comparisons, use sequential tests. Sequential read and write operations resemble copying large files, loading media and sustaining a recording stream. Random-access scores describe a different workload and should not be substituted for sequential results when you are evaluating large transfers or video recording.

A capacity test answers a different question: can the card store data across all of the space it reports and read that data back correctly? A card can pass capacity verification yet fail to reach its advertised peak speed, and a fast benchmark does not prove that the card’s full capacity is genuine.

The SD Association describes the limitation directly: “As a characteristic of flash memory, actual transfer speed varies.” Its bus guidance also notes that “Maximum speed differs from the bus I/F speed.” Treat every result as a measurement of the complete test setup, not as a permanent property independent of the device attached to it.

Prepare the card and test setup

1. Identify the exact card

Before testing, write down the label information and packaging details:

  • Brand and complete product name
  • Rated capacity, such as 128 GB or 1 TB
  • UHS or other bus/interface marking
  • Speed-class symbols, including C10, U1, U3, V30, V60 or V90 where present
  • Any application-class marking, such as A1 or A2

Find the manufacturer’s current datasheet for that exact model and capacity. Do not compare a benchmark with a family-level headline when the manufacturer publishes different limits for different capacities. Keep the printed capacity and the computer’s formatted capacity separate in your notes; formatting and file-system overhead can make the usable space appear smaller without indicating a fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Use a capable reader and host

Connect the card through a compatible built-in slot or a USB card reader. The reader must support the card’s interface, and the computer port must be fast enough not to become the bottleneck. A microSD-to-SD adapter can provide the physical connection for a full-size SD slot, but the adapter does not make the host bus faster.

Record the computer, operating system, reader model, connection type and port used. Note whether the reader is connected directly or through a hub. Repeating the test with another reader or host can produce a different result because the measurement includes those components.

3. Protect your data

Copy important files elsewhere before any test that writes to the card. A full-capacity verification test can overwrite existing data. Use an empty card, or make and check a backup before proceeding. A sequential benchmark may also write test files, depending on the utility and settings, so read the utility’s prompts instead of assuming every speed test is read-only.

Run a repeatable sequential benchmark

Choose a benchmark utility that reports sequential read and sequential write results in MB/s for your operating system. No single application, test size, cache policy or duration is universal across Windows, macOS, Linux and mobile devices, so state the utility and its configuration whenever you publish or compare a result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Insert the card. Close applications that may be reading from or writing to it, then confirm that the computer shows the expected volume and capacity.
  2. Choose the card’s volume. Verify the drive letter or mount point carefully; selecting the wrong disk can destroy unrelated data.
  3. Select sequential read and sequential write tests. Use the same operation names and units for every card you compare. A random-read score is not a substitute for a sequential-read score, and a write score cannot be compared with a read claim.
  4. Run the test under the chosen settings. Do not change the reader, port, card file system or background workload between cards in a comparison. Keep other transfers and cloud-sync activity stopped where practical.
  5. Record the complete result. Save the read and write figures in MB/s together with the utility, settings, host, reader, port and date.
  6. Repeat an unexpectedly low result. Reconnect through a known-good, compatible reader and host. If the second setup is materially faster, the first setup was limiting the measurement.

A single run is an observation, not a guaranteed maximum. If repeated runs differ, preserve the conditions and report the spread or the separate readings rather than silently choosing the highest number. Manufacturer figures normally use “up to” language and are measured under stated conditions; your benchmark is an observation under your own conditions.

Verify the card’s full capacity separately

Windows: H2testw procedure

TP-Link’s SD-card guidance names H2testw for Windows as a way to check whether a card can be written to its advertised capacity and read back correctly. The guide’s example calls for formatting the card, selecting all available space, and choosing Write + Verify.

  1. Back up the card and format it as appropriate for your device.
  2. Open H2testw and select the card’s volume, not another disk.
  3. Set the test to use all available space.
  4. Choose Write + Verify and allow the program to complete.
  5. Read the final report for unreadable or overwritten areas and retain it with the card’s identifying details.

This procedure writes test data across the selected space. It is therefore destructive to files left on the card, and its run time depends on capacity, speed and the computer. No single duration applies to every card. Do not use an interrupted or partial run as proof that the entire capacity is valid.

macOS: F3 procedure

The same TP-Link guidance names F3 for Mac. Follow the F3 documentation for the installation method and commands appropriate to your macOS version, select the mounted card, and perform a complete write-and-verify cycle. Confirm the mount point before starting and keep the card backed up or empty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

F3/H2testw results are capacity-authenticity results. They do not replace a sequential performance benchmark and do not demonstrate that a camera will sustain a particular video rate. If the utility reports verification errors, stop using the card for valuable files until the cause is understood; a counterfeit or failing card can lose data even when its label looks genuine.

Understand speed-class labels

Speed classes are minimum sequential write guarantees under defined conditions, not promises of peak read speed. The host must support a compatible bus mode, and the card and host class combination matters.

Marking What it communicates How to use it
C10 Class 10 minimum sequential-write category Use it as a floor for sustained writing, not as a measured read result.
U1 UHS speed-class category for a lower minimum sustained write tier Check the device’s required UHS mode and recording specification.
U3 UHS speed-class category associated with a 30 MB/s minimum sequential-write tier under class conditions Suitable only when the host and device can use the required UHS mode.
V30 Video Speed Class category associated with a 30 MB/s minimum sustained write tier The SD Association lists U3/V30 for Full HD through 4K recording examples.
V60 Video Speed Class category associated with a 60 MB/s minimum sustained write tier The SD Association lists V60 for 4K UHD through 8K recording examples.
A1/A2 Application-performance classes Do not substitute them for sequential read/write benchmark results.

Video labels describe intended sustained-recording use; they do not guarantee that every camera will support the same resolution, frame rate or bus mode. A camera may require a specific class even when a computer benchmark looks fast, so check the device’s own card requirements before recording. Conversely, a class marking is a minimum category and does not tell you the card’s maximum read speed.

Compare your numbers with the right specification

Match model, capacity and operation

Compare sequential read with a published read figure and sequential write with a published write figure. Match the exact capacity because manufacturers can assign different limits within one product family. Keep the units consistent and note whether the datasheet says “up to,” gives a minimum, or describes a class requirement.

For example, a SanDisk datasheet for one Extreme UHS-I microSD family lists up to 245 MB/s read for its 2 TB, 1 TB, 512 GB and 256 GB versions, while write limits differ by capacity. Those are manufacturer maximums, not independent test results, and the datasheet says specifications may change. A result below 245 MB/s is not automatically a defect: the published figure may require a particular reader and host, and your card may be a capacity variant with a different write specification.

Use a comparison record

Field Record
Card identity Exact model, rated capacity and markings
Published figures Capacity-specific read/write maximums and class minimums
Measured read Sequential result in MB/s
Measured write Sequential result in MB/s
Test conditions Utility, settings, operating system, reader, port and date
Capacity check Pass/fail result from a complete write-and-verify test, if performed

This record prevents an advertised read maximum from being compared with a class minimum or with a random-access score. When comparing two cards, keep the workload the same: large-file transfer, sustained video writing and application loading exercise different aspects of storage performance.

Diagnose a result that looks too slow

The reader or port is the limit

Retest with a reader known to support the card’s bus and a high-speed host port. If the score rises substantially, the original reader, adapter, hub or port was limiting throughput. Keep the faster setup in the report rather than silently replacing the first result.

The host cannot use the card’s advertised mode

A card’s maximum speed and the host bus-interface speed are separate specifications. A phone, camera or older computer may operate the card in a slower mode. Check the host’s supported interface before treating a lower result as a card fault. The same card can therefore produce different valid readings on two devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The comparison uses unlike figures

Check that both results are sequential, use the same units, and represent similar test sizes and conditions. An “up to” manufacturer maximum is not a guaranteed everyday rate, and a speed-class symbol is not a peak read claim. Also check that you did not compare a result from one capacity with a datasheet entry for another.

The card may be counterfeit or failing

A suspicious capacity report, files that disappear after the card fills, or verification errors justify a complete H2testw or F3 write-and-verify test. Back up first. If capacity verification fails, stop trusting the card with data. If capacity passes but speed remains low, retest with a compatible reader/host and compare the exact model’s datasheet before concluding that the card is defective.

Choose the right test for the job

Your question Use What the result means
How fast can this setup copy a large file? Sequential read/write benchmark Transfer performance for this card, reader, host and configuration.
Does the card really contain its reported capacity? Full-space write-and-verify with H2testw or F3 Whether data survives a complete write/read verification across the selected space.
Will my camera record reliably? Speed-class and device-compatibility check, followed by a workload test on the actual device Whether the card meets the device’s stated class and interface requirements; a computer benchmark alone cannot guarantee recording behavior.
Which of two cards is better for large media files? Run the same sequential benchmark on both through the same reader and host A like-for-like comparison of measured transfer performance, not a universal ranking for every device.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Testing through a slow hub or reader and blaming the card.
  • Comparing a 1 TB card with a different capacity’s datasheet figure.
  • Calling a speed-class minimum a measured read speed.
  • Running a full write-and-verify test without backing up existing files.
  • Using a capacity utility as though it were a standardized performance benchmark.
  • Reporting a number without the reader, host, utility and test conditions.
  • Assuming A1 or A2 application markings predict sequential video or file-copy performance.
  • Comparing a sequential score with a random score or mixing MB/s with another unit.
  • Declaring a card counterfeit after one low result without testing a compatible reader and host.

A practical reporting template

For a useful result, report the card’s exact model and capacity, the class and bus markings, the operating system, reader and port, the benchmark utility and settings, and the sequential read/write scores in MB/s. State whether the figures are one run or repeated runs. If you performed a capacity check, identify it separately as a complete write-and-verify test and say that existing data was backed up or the card was empty.

Include the date of the datasheet or product page you consulted when possible, since manufacturer specifications can change. Preserve the utility’s final capacity report rather than summarizing it as a speed score. This level of detail lets another reader reproduce the setup and understand why a result may differ on a camera, phone or another computer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a card pass a capacity test and still be slow?

Yes. Write-and-verify testing checks whether data can occupy and be read back across the reported capacity. It does not establish a peak or sustained benchmark speed on every host.

Why is my benchmark lower than the number on the package?

The package figure may be an “up to” maximum measured under specified conditions. Your reader, host bus, port, workload and card capacity can produce a lower result.

Should I test the card in my camera instead of a computer?

Use the computer benchmark for repeatable sequential figures, then confirm that the camera supports the card’s class and bus mode. A computer result alone cannot guarantee a camera’s recording behavior.

Does a microSD-to-SD adapter increase speed?

No. It can provide the physical connection for a full-size SD slot, but it does not make the reader or host bus faster. The adapter and slot remain part of the measured setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many times should I run the benchmark?

There is no universal run count. Record the initial sequential result, and repeat when the number is unexpectedly low or when you are comparing cards. Keep the reader, host, settings and background workload unchanged.

Is H2testw or F3 a speed benchmark?

No. These utilities perform a full-space write-and-verify check for capacity authenticity. Use a separate sequential benchmark for read and write performance, and back up files before the capacity test.

Are U3 and V30 the same as a 30 MB/s read speed?

No. They describe a minimum sustained sequential-write category under class conditions. They are not peak read-speed claims, and the host must support the required bus mode.

Why do two capacities in the same card family have different results?

Manufacturers can publish different maximum write or read limits for different capacities. Compare your measurement with the datasheet entry for the exact model and capacity, not just the family name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Benchmark sequential read and write through a compatible reader, document the entire setup, and compare like-for-like results with the exact capacity’s specifications. Use H2testw or F3 separately when you need to verify that the card’s full reported capacity is genuine.
