To check a laptop display in Windows 11, first confirm its brightness, color, and resolution settings. Then compare the built-in screen with an external display if you can. Use HDR calibration only on a display that supports HDR. These steps can help narrow down a problem, but Windows does not provide one universal built-in test that confirms every physical panel fault or dead pixel.
1. Check brightness and color settings

Open Settings > System > Display and select the laptop’s built-in display if more than one display is listed.

Adjust the brightness slider, if one is available. Some laptops support automatic brightness, and the controls shown can vary with the hardware and connected displays. For an external monitor, use its physical buttons or on-screen menu when Windows does not provide a brightness control. If colors look tinted or unusually warm, check whether Night light is on and review the display’s color settings. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it affects the image.

2. Check resolution and display layout
With the laptop panel selected under Settings > System > Display, check Display resolution and the related layout options. The recommended resolution offered for that screen is the sensible starting point; the correct setting depends on the particular display. If Windows is managing multiple screens, verify that you are changing the intended one. Microsoft’s resolution and layout instructions cover selecting a display and changing its resolution.
3. Use HDR calibration only on an HDR-capable display
Go to Settings > System > Display > HDR and check the selected screen’s capabilities before using HDR tools. HDR availability and brightness behavior depend on the display, configuration, and power state; some HDR-capable laptops turn HDR off on battery under their default power settings. Microsoft describes HDR as a way to make the screen look “more vivid and lifelike” in What is HDR in Windows?
HDR Calibration for games and apps
The Windows HDR Calibration app is intended for HDR-capable displays with HDR turned on. Run it full screen. Its three test patterns let you set the darkest visible detail, brightest visible detail, and maximum brightness. Graphics hardware and driver requirements apply, so the app may not be suitable for every laptop. This calibrates HDR presentation; it is not a general test of the panel’s physical health. HDR video streaming
Some built-in laptop screens support HDR video streaming without supporting HDR games and apps. For that case, Microsoft directs users to Display calibration for HDR video in HDR settings. It adjusts the balance of detail in bright and dark scenes while you assess supported HDR streaming video. This is a visual calibration for video, not a broad panel diagnostic. The steps are in Microsoft’s built-in HDR video calibration guide.
4. Compare the laptop with an external display
If you have a monitor or TV available, connect it and press Windows + P to check the projection mode. Compare whether the symptom appears on the external screen as well as the laptop panel. If the external display is blank or unreliable, simplify the connection: disconnect docks, dongles, and adapters, secure the cable, and try another cable. If possible, test the external display with another system. Microsoft outlines these checks in its external-display troubleshooting guidance.
This comparison is evidence for narrowing down the source, not proof that a particular internal component has failed. A problem limited to the laptop panel points attention toward that screen or its connection, while a symptom on both screens can also involve Windows, graphics, or the connection path.

5. Follow the right path for a blank screen or flicker
If the screen is blank

Check that the laptop and any external display have power and that connections are secure.

Press Windows + P and cycle through display modes to check whether the image is being sent to another screen.

Disconnect external displays and peripherals as appropriate, then check whether the laptop screen returns.

Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting steps also cover power, connections, display mode, and related checks.
If the screen flickers
Flicker alone does not establish that the panel is defective. Microsoft identifies display-driver problems and incompatible apps as common causes and provides separate steps for investigating them in its screen-flicker troubleshooting guide. Follow that symptom-specific path rather than treating every flicker as a hardware failure.

6. What Windows can—and cannot—tell you about dead pixels
The Windows display and HDR tools described above adjust or assess how an image looks; they do not establish a universal Windows 11 dead-pixel test or a manufacturer-independent physical-panel diagnostic. If a suspected pixel defect persists after checking settings and viewing different content, consult the laptop maker’s diagnostic and repair guidance for your exact model. A model-specific diagnosis matters before considering a replacement panel.

Choose the next check by the symptom

Dim, bright, or tinted image: check brightness, Night light, and color settings first.

Soft or oddly arranged image: confirm the selected display, resolution, and layout.

Problem only in HDR content: verify HDR support and use the appropriate HDR calibration path.

Blank or flickering image: use the separate connection, display-mode, driver, or app troubleshooting steps for that symptom.

Apparent pixel defect or physical damage: seek model-specific manufacturer diagnostics rather than treating a Windows setting as proof of panel health.
