If a drive shows a SMART warning, fails a diagnostic, makes unusual noises, or starts producing repeated disk errors, protect your files before troubleshooting. Copy important data to separate storage, then use a drive-health check and a file-system check for their different purposes. SMART and a manufacturer’s self-tests examine drive telemetry and hardware behavior; CHKDSK and macOS Disk Utility examine or repair the file system and volume structure. A single passing test is useful evidence, not a guarantee that the drive will never fail.
Start with data protection
A hard drive can remain usable while its reliability is declining. If the computer reports a SMART error, the drive intermittently disappears, files take unusually long to open, or you hear repeated clicking, grinding, or spin-up attempts, treat the symptoms as a data-protection problem first.
Seagate support states: A system S.M.A.R.T. error means you should backup your data as soon as possible and maintain consistent backups.
A SMART alert deserves that response even when Windows or macOS still appears normal. Seagate also notes that some other tests can report PASS after the system has already reported a SMART error.

- Stop activities that write heavily to the suspect drive, such as large downloads, game installations, or video exports.
- Copy irreplaceable documents, photos, project files, browser profiles, and other personal data to a separate disk or network location. An external hard drive is suitable as a backup destination; it stores a copy but cannot repair the failing drive.
- If copying stalls, produces read errors, or makes the drive vanish, copy the most valuable folders first and avoid repeatedly restarting the disk. A failing mechanical drive can deteriorate during prolonged use.
- After the important files exist elsewhere, run diagnostics. Do not make a repair command your first response to a SMART warning when the data has not been secured.
What each health check actually measures
“Drive health” is not one universal test. The following checks answer different questions, so a result from one category cannot substitute for another.

| Check | What it examines | Typical operation | Time and connection considerations | What a result means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SMART status | Telemetry reported by the drive, such as read retries, slow spin-up, temperature, and bad-sector conditions. | Usually a quick status read; it does not repair the file system. | SMART availability depends on the drive and the connection path. USB enclosures and controllers may not pass every SMART feature through. | An alert is a reason to back up promptly. Attribute thresholds and meanings vary by drive design and manufacturer. |
| Manufacturer short self-test | A built-in diagnostic sequence supplied by the drive maker. | More targeted than a status display and generally convenient for an initial check. | Usually much faster than a long test, but support varies by model and interface. | A failure is strong evidence that the hardware should be replaced or presented for warranty service. |
| Manufacturer long or generic/read test | Reads substantially more of the disk surface and performs a more extensive diagnostic. | Read-focused testing; it is not a file-system repair. | Duration depends on capacity and drive speed and can be considerably longer than a short check, particularly on large disks. | A failure means you should preserve data and plan replacement rather than rely on software repair. |
| Windows CHKDSK | File-system and volume metadata, with optional handling of logical and physical errors. | Read-only inspection by default; switches such as /f and /r request repair-oriented work. |
Can take a long time on a large or damaged volume. Repair options can alter file-system metadata. | Useful for volume problems, but it is not a SMART reader and does not replace a manufacturer’s drive self-test. |
| macOS Disk Utility | APFS, HFS+, and other volume or partition structures through its First Aid workflow; it may also display SMART hardware status. | First Aid checks and may repair volume structures. | Apple says many disks include SMART hardware, not all. An unavailable SMART reading is not a “pass.” | A clean First Aid result means the checked volume structures were not found to have the reported problems; it does not certify the underlying hardware for life. |
Recognize signs that justify an immediate check
Investigate promptly when you see a SMART alert, repeated operating-system disk errors, files that become unreadable, unexplained pauses during access, or unusual mechanical sounds. SMART monitors conditions including read retries, slow spin-up, high temperature, and excessive bad sectors, but the exact attributes and thresholds differ among drive designs. No warning system catches every mechanical or electronic failure in advance.
- SMART warning: The firmware has crossed a condition it considers significant. Back up before running lengthy tests.
- Repeated disk errors: The operating system may be reporting a volume problem, a hardware communication problem, or both.
- Access problems: A drive that repeatedly disconnects, takes much longer to open folders, or freezes during reads needs protection before diagnosis.
- Noise: Clicking, grinding, repeated spin-up attempts, or a new pattern of vibration can indicate a mechanical problem. Do not assume that a quiet drive is healthy; some failures are silent.
Check a Windows drive with the manufacturer’s diagnostic
Use the drive maker’s current diagnostic utility whenever one is available. Seagate’s SeaTools is an example that Seagate lists for Windows, Linux, and bootable media. The labels differ among manufacturers, but the workflow is generally the same: identify the physical drive, read SMART status, run a short self-test, and use a long read test when the data is safe elsewhere.
Run the status and short checks
- Install or start the manufacturer’s diagnostic utility from its official support channel. If Windows cannot stay stable, use the maker’s bootable version where the utility provides one.
- Confirm the model and serial number shown by the utility match the physical drive you intend to test. Be especially careful when several disks are attached.
- Read the SMART or health panel first. Record the exact warning, attribute, or error code rather than relying only on a color indicator.
- Run the short drive self-test. Keep the computer powered and avoid disconnecting the drive while it runs.
- If the short test passes but symptoms or a SMART alert remain, run the long or generic/read test after confirming that valuable data is backed up.
A short test is convenient, but it samples less of the device than a long test. Seagate describes its long test as reading the drive; the duration depends on capacity and speed, so a large disk may take considerably longer than a quick status check. Do not infer a universal number of minutes or hours.

Account for the connection path
A diagnostic may not expose every feature through an external USB enclosure, dock, RAID layer, or unusual controller. If SMART is unavailable or a test cannot start, check the utility’s supported-device notes and, where practical, test the drive through a direct internal connection. “Not supported” means that this path cannot provide the reading; it is not evidence that the disk is healthy.
Interpret a failed manufacturer test
A manufacturer diagnostic error is a hardware-replacement signal. Seagate’s guidance is to replace the drive when SeaTools generates an error. Preserve the data you can still read, save the diagnostic code, and contact the seller or manufacturer about replacement or warranty support where applicable. A file-system repair cannot restore worn heads, failing media, unstable electronics, or a degrading spindle.
Use CHKDSK for Windows file-system problems
CHKDSK answers a different question: are the file-system and volume structures consistent, and are there logical or physical errors that Windows can report or handle? Microsoft describes it as checking file-system and volume metadata for logical and physical errors. It does not read SMART status and does not replace the drive maker’s self-test.

Inspect without requesting repair
- Open Command Prompt as administrator: select Start, type
Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the prompt. - Run
chkdsk C:, replacingC:with the letter of the volume you need to inspect. - Read the final summary and save it if you are troubleshooting recurring errors. A clean result describes the checked volume; it does not certify the physical disk.
Request file-system repair only after backup
The /f switch requests correction of file-system errors. The /r switch requests work that includes locating bad sectors and recovering readable information. Both can take substantial time, and repair-oriented operations can change file-system metadata. If Windows says the volume is in use, follow its prompt to schedule the check for the next restart. Do not use repair switches as a substitute for copying data from a drive that is already showing SMART or mechanical symptoms.

Check a Mac drive with Disk Utility
Apple’s Disk Utility can check the health of many Mac disks. Apple qualifies this because many disks provide SMART hardware status, but not all do. Disk Utility therefore may show a SMART status for one device and no SMART reading for another.

Run First Aid
- Open Finder, choose Applications, open Utilities, and launch Disk Utility.
- Choose View and, when available, Show All Devices so the physical disk, containers, and volumes are visible.
- Select the volume you want to inspect and choose First Aid, then select Run. If Disk Utility presents a hierarchy, work from the volume upward through its container and physical device as the interface allows.
- Read the completion message. Save any error text before closing the window.
First Aid deals with volume and file-system structures. It is not equivalent to a manufacturer’s long surface test. If the disk’s SMART field says that status is unavailable, do not interpret that wording as a clean bill of health; the connection or device may simply not expose SMART to macOS.
When First Aid reports an error
First Aid may be able to repair a volume structure, but a successful repair does not prove that the physical disk is reliable. If the Mac also shows SMART warnings, repeated read failures, or worsening access behavior, keep the backup and replacement plan in place. For an external drive, test whether the issue follows the cable, enclosure, or port only after securing the data; changing connections can help isolate a communication fault but cannot erase evidence of a failing disk.

How to read SMART results without overinterpreting them
SMART is a collection of firmware measurements, not a universal health score. One manufacturer may expose an attribute that another does not, and threshold calculations vary by design. A high temperature, increased read-retry count, slow spin-up, or growing bad-sector count is a reason to investigate, but the number alone does not provide a reliable failure date.

- SMART status unavailable: Check the connection path and device support. Lack of a reading is not proof of health.
- SMART passes and no symptoms exist: Continue normal backups and monitoring. Passing means no alert was reported at that moment, not that the drive is guaranteed for its remaining lifetime.
- SMART passes but symptoms continue: Investigate cables, power, the enclosure or controller, operating-system errors, and intermittent faults. Seagate notes that some problems remain when its tests find no drive trouble.
Decide what to do with the combined results
| Observed result | Practical decision |
|---|---|
| SMART warning, regardless of current usability | Complete or update the backup first. Run diagnostics only after the important data is protected, and prepare for replacement. |
| Manufacturer short or long test fails | Preserve readable data, keep the error code, and arrange replacement or warranty support. Do not expect CHKDSK or First Aid to make failing hardware dependable. |
| CHKDSK or First Aid reports file-system errors, while hardware diagnostics pass | After backup, perform the appropriate repair and then monitor for recurring errors. A repeat problem warrants checking the connection and hardware again. |
| All available checks pass, but the drive still freezes, disconnects, or produces errors | Do not declare the drive definitely healthy. Test the cable, port, enclosure, controller, power, and operating-system logs, and maintain a current backup while isolating the fault. |
| No SMART reading is available | Treat the result as unknown. Verify whether the disk, adapter, or enclosure supports SMART and rely on other diagnostics and observed behavior. |
A safe troubleshooting order
Use this order when you need a repeatable workflow rather than a single command:
- Protect: Copy irreplaceable data to separate storage, starting with the files that would be hardest to recreate.
- Observe: Note warnings, error messages, unusual noises, disconnects, and when the problem began.
- Identify: Confirm the physical disk and interface before launching a test.
- Read SMART: Use the maker’s utility or the status exposed by the operating system, recognizing that support varies by connection.
- Run a short self-test: Use it as an initial diagnostic, not as a lifetime guarantee.
- Run the long read test: Use it when the data is safe and the drive can remain powered for the required, capacity-dependent duration.
- Check the volume: Use CHKDSK on Windows or Disk Utility First Aid on macOS for file-system and metadata issues.
- Act on the strongest evidence: A failed hardware diagnostic or SMART warning takes priority over a clean file-system check.
- Replace when indicated: Move ongoing work to a known-good disk instead of repeatedly repairing a device that is reporting hardware failure.
Common mistakes that make a bad situation worse
- Running repair before backup: A repair operation can change metadata while the drive is unstable. Secure the files first.
- Assuming CHKDSK is a health test: It checks the volume, not the drive’s SMART telemetry or the manufacturer’s internal self-test.
- Treating PASS as a guarantee: A drive can appear normal, or pass a particular test, after the system has already issued a SMART warning.
- Repeating long tests on a failing disk: Extended reads add operating time. Once a test has produced a replacement-level error, prioritize data preservation.
- Ignoring an unsupported SMART reading: The interface may be hiding the data. Check the adapter or direct connection rather than calling the drive healthy.
- Replacing only the cable without recording evidence: A cable or port can cause disconnects, but changing it does not invalidate a SMART alert or a failed self-test. Keep the original messages and diagnostic codes.
Maintain protection after the check
Health checks are snapshots. Keep consistent backups of important files rather than waiting for the next warning, and periodically verify that the backup can actually be opened. A second copy on separate storage reduces the consequence of a single-disk failure; it does not turn an aging drive into a safe primary copy.
When a replacement is required, copy the data to the new device, confirm the files, and only then retire or securely erase the old disk according to the sensitivity of its contents. If the old drive is still under warranty, retain the diagnostic result and follow the manufacturer’s return instructions.
