Search the game’s exact title in the Australian Classification Board’s National Classification Database (NCD), open the matching decision, and read both the category and consumer advice. Then compare that result with the Australian rating shown by the retailer, digital storefront or packaging. If the listing says CTC (Check the Classification), the game is not classified yet, so check again closer to release.
Start with the official Australian record
The NCD is the strongest way to verify an Australian game classification. Storefront badges and packaging are useful cross-checks, but the NCD explains the decision and the content that led to it.
- Open the National Classification Database and search the game’s exact title.
- Include the subtitle, remaster name, edition or sequel number if those appear in the listing.
- Check that the result is for the Australian release and matches the format you intend to buy.
- Open the decision and read the classification category plus the consumer advice.
- Compare the result with the label on the retailer page, console store, mobile listing or physical box.
A close title match is not enough. A series may have several entries, and a remaster, expansion or materially changed release can have a different decision. A foreign badge such as an ESRB or PEGI age number is not an Australian classification.
What to record from the NCD entry
Copy the exact title, classification category, decision date if shown, and every line of consumer advice into your notes. This prevents confusion when a publisher has several similarly named versions. The record’s “Why this classification?” information can also explain which content drove the decision. If you are comparing games for a child, save the link or a screenshot so you can discuss the same information with another parent or caregiver.

What each Australian game rating means
Australian categories answer two different questions: whether access is legally restricted and what level of impact the Board found. The distinction between advice and restriction is especially important for families.

Do not treat an M symbol as a legal ban for younger teenagers. M means the Board does not recommend the content for under-15s, while MA 15+ and R 18+ are restricted categories.
Apply the rule to common family situations
A 12-year-old asking for an M-rated game is a suitability decision for the parent or carer, not an automatic legal violation. Read the advice, consider the child’s maturity and decide whether the content fits your family rules. A 14-year-old seeking an MA 15+ game falls into a legally restricted category; the parent or adult guardian exception has specific conditions, and a digital service may handle it differently from a cinema, shop or other venue. An R 18+ game must not be supplied to anyone under 18, regardless of parental permission.

Read the consumer advice beside the symbol
The category is a broad summary. Consumer advice identifies the impactful or frequent content that may matter to a particular child or household. It normally covers themes, violence, coarse language, drug use, nudity and sex. Computer-game advice can also identify online interactivity, in-game purchases, chance-based in-game purchases and simulated gambling.
Use the advice for a suitability decision
Apply two separate tests:
- Legal test: Is the category restricted for the buyer’s age?
- Family test: Does the described content fit this child’s maturity, sensitivities and your family rules?
A G or PG classification does not guarantee that every child will enjoy the game, and an M classification does not describe every scene in detail. Advice is a practical warning, not a substitute for your own judgement.
Pay attention to impact and frequency
Advice is intended to describe content that is impactful or occurs often enough to influence the classification. For example, a game may list violence but differ greatly in intensity, realism or frequency from another game with the same broad category. Read every listed element rather than relying on the symbol alone.
Look at combinations as well as individual words. “Themes” can signal a subject that is disturbing even when the game has little graphic action. “Online interactivity” tells you that communication or interaction with other players is part of the experience, but it does not by itself describe who the child will meet or how a particular platform moderates conversations. Treat each line as a prompt to check the game’s settings and your child’s comfort level.

The official guidance states: “Computer games containing simulated gambling have a minimum classification of R 18+.” A chance-based purchase is not automatically the same thing as simulated gambling, so check the exact wording in the title’s advice.
Australian Classification also quotes parenting expert Gen Muir: “Do your homework beforehand: check the game’s classification and any warnings about gambling.” This is particularly relevant when a child can spend money without understanding that a random reward may provide little or no value.
What CTC means on a trailer or store page
CTC means Check the Classification. It indicates that the game is unclassified at the advertising stage; it is not a temporary age rating and it does not mean the game is suitable for every age.
Check again nearer the release date. Once the decision is available, the Australian category and advice should replace CTC on advertising and listings. Do not infer an Australian rating from a foreign badge, a provisional marketing claim or a similar earlier game.
If the NCD has no matching title
A missing result can have several explanations: the title may be entered differently, the game may not yet have a decision, or the listing may describe a different edition.
- Search the precise spelling, subtitle and punctuation used by the publisher.
- Try the base title without a subtitle, then search distinctive words from the title.
- Check whether you are looking for a beta, expansion, remaster, bundle or regional release rather than the base game.
- Ask the seller or distributor which Australian version the listing represents.
- Do not treat the absence of a result as permission to assume any age rating.
Industry guidance allows a missing title to proceed toward a decision through an application, an approved classification tool or an accredited classifier. Those are routes for obtaining a classification, not evidence that a consumer may assign one independently.
Questions to send a seller
If a listing remains unclear, ask for the Australian Classification Board title or decision, the precise edition and platform, whether the product is an import, and whether downloadable content is included. Ask why the page says CTC or displays a foreign badge. A seller that cannot identify the Australian version has not given you a reliable basis for an age decision.
Checking different formats, editions and releases
An Australian classification generally applies across formats when the game is identical or when changes are exempt from classification. That does not remove the need to verify a release that has materially changed content.

- Same game on another platform: confirm that the content is identical before assuming the same decision applies.
- Remaster or definitive edition: search the edition by name; added scenes, modes or features may require a separate decision.
- Expansion or downloadable content: check whether it has its own classification or advice.
- Imported copy: use the Australian record and local retailer information, not the foreign age badge printed on the box.
- Online update: if substantial content is added after launch, review the current Australian listing and the storefront’s updated advice.
Where ratings should appear when you buy digitally
Australian Classification says ratings and consumer advice should appear on online gaming storefronts, digital downloads, streaming services and computer-game packaging. Mobile and online games may display an Australian category through the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) system.
IARC definitions use Australian categories such as M, MA 15+ and R 18+ for eligible online and mobile games. For a particular purchase, however, the NCD title record is the most direct verification when it is available. If the storefront and NCD appear inconsistent, pause the purchase and ask the seller which Australian decision applies.
Why a storefront label can differ temporarily
A store page may be created before a final decision, may display a regional badge, or may not yet reflect an updated edition. Check the Australian territory, not just the language of the page. For a physical box, inspect the Australian classification mark rather than relying on a photograph supplied by an overseas seller. When in doubt, the exact NCD entry and the seller’s identification of the version should agree.
Rating is not the same as total cost
An age classification says nothing about the complete price or the commercial terms. A game can be free to download and still charge for a subscription, expansion, cosmetic item, season pass or random reward.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) applies Australian Consumer Law to online and mobile games. Developers and retailers must not mislead consumers about descriptions, features, prices or subscriptions. The ACCC advises checking the game description and terms, watching for hidden costs and loot boxes, and using device payment restrictions where appropriate. The ACCC does not issue age classifications; use Australian Classification for the rating itself.
Check these spending details separately
- Whether the advertised price is a one-time purchase or an introductory offer.
- Whether online play requires a recurring subscription.
- Whether a free download contains optional purchases or paid progression.
- Whether purchases are random, and whether the game discloses odds or limits.
- Which account, card or mobile-payment method can authorize spending.
- Whether a child can make purchases from a shared device profile.
Set console, phone or tablet purchase controls before handing the device to a child. A rating cannot prevent accidental or unauthorized spending.
Online access and age assurance
The eSafety Commissioner’s FAQ, accessed on 13 October 2026, says users will have to complete some form of age assurance to access online games classified R 18+ by the Australian Classification Board. The same guidance says other games do not require those age checks under its stated rules.

A decision path for a family purchase
- Identify the product. Write down the exact title, edition, platform and whether it is a bundle or import.
- Verify the classification. Find the matching Australian NCD record and note the category and advice.
- Separate law from judgement. Establish whether the category is advisory or legally restricted, then decide whether the content suits the intended player.
- Check interactive risks. Review online interactivity, chat or multiplayer features, chance-based purchases and simulated gambling.
- Check the commercial terms. Confirm the upfront price, subscriptions, expansions and payment controls.
- Recheck unresolved items. If the result is CTC, missing, or inconsistent with the store page, delay the purchase until the version is clear.
This sequence avoids two common errors: assuming a legally available M game is automatically suitable, and assuming a low price or free download has no continuing cost.
A quick way to compare two games
When choosing between candidates, record the following in a simple comparison note:

The retailer shows a rating but the NCD result looks different
Check the exact title, edition, platform and Australian territory. The retailer may be displaying an international badge or an outdated listing. Ask for clarification before buying if the mismatch remains.
The listing says CTC immediately before launch
CTC means the classification was not available at the advertising stage. Recheck closer to release and do not rely on the publisher’s target audience or a foreign rating.
The game has an M rating but the child is 12
M is not legally restricted, but it is not recommended for under-15s. Read the advice and decide whether the content is appropriate for that particular child; legality and suitability are separate questions.
The game is MA 15+ and the buyer is under 15
MA 15+ is legally restricted. The under-15 accompaniment exception applies only under the parent or adult guardian conditions described in official guidance. Check the retailer or venue’s procedure rather than assuming every digital service handles the exception identically.

Search the NCD advice for simulated gambling or gambling themes. Since 22 September 2024, simulated gambling has a minimum R 18+ classification, while gambling themes that do not meet that threshold are assessed according to their impact.

The game is labelled “free”
“Free to download” does not necessarily mean free to play. Check subscriptions, expansions, season passes, cosmetic purchases, paid progression and random rewards, then apply device or account spending limits.
Five-minute pre-purchase checklist
- Exact title and edition searched in the NCD.
- Australian category recorded.
- Consumer advice read in full.
- CTC status ruled out or a later check scheduled.
- Gambling, loot-box and other purchase features identified.
- Retailer or packaging label checked against the NCD.
- Subscription, in-game spending and payment controls reviewed separately.
- Any R 18+ online-access or age-assurance requirement confirmed with the platform.

Are ESRB and PEGI ratings valid in Australia?
They are foreign systems and should not be treated as Australian classifications. Verify the Australian NCD record or the Australian rating shown by a local retailer.
