Check the game-key card’s packaging for the required free-space amount, or find the same figure on the game’s digital Nintendo Store or Nintendo eShop page. Then compare it with the free space shown in your Switch 2’s Data Management settings. A game-key card provides a key to download the game; it does not contain the full game data.

Find the game’s required free space

  1. Check the package. Look for the required free-space amount on the game-key card packaging. Nintendo says the amount is indicated there. Nintendo’s Game-Key Card overview explains that the card is used to download the game rather than supplying the complete game data.
  2. Look up the digital listing if you do not have the package. Search for that game in the Nintendo Store or Nintendo eShop and check its listing for the required free space. Nintendo identifies the digital listing as another place to find the requirement.

The figure is specific to the game. There is no single download-size number for game-key cards as a category, so use the packaging or listing for the title you plan to play.

Compare the requirement with free space on Switch 2

Open the console’s Data Management display to check how much space is actually available. Compare that free-space figure—not the console’s headline capacity—with the game’s required amount. Nintendo lists Switch 2’s storage capacity as 256 GB, with a portion reserved for system use; that total is not all available for games. See Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ for storage information.

Switch 2 game software can be stored in system memory or on a microSD Express card. If you need more room, use a microSD Express card; ordinary microSD cards cannot be used to store Switch 2 software. Check the game’s packaging or digital listing for its specific requirement before deciding whether additional storage is necessary. Nintendo’s microSD Express guidance covers compatible storage.
