To check a drive’s file system in Windows 11, open File Explorer, select This PC, right-click the drive, choose Properties, and read the File system field on the General tab. This shows the current format without changing or formatting the drive.
1. Use File Explorer Properties
This is the simplest way to check one drive. Microsoft documents the steps for viewing a drive’s file system in Windows File Recovery.
- Open File Explorer and select This PC.
- Right-click the drive you want to check and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, find the File system field.
The field identifies the format Windows sees for that volume, such as NTFS or exFAT. Do not choose Format to check it; formatting is a different operation that can erase data.

2. Check a specific drive with PowerShell
Use PowerShell when you know the drive letter and want a concise result. Microsoft documents the Get-Volume cmdlet and its drive-letter filtering in Get-Volume (Storage).

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Open Start, search for PowerShell, and open it.
- Run
Get-Volume -DriveLetter E, replacingEwith the target drive letter. - Read the
FileSystemvalue in the result.
For example, if the drive is F:, use Get-Volume -DriveLetter F. The command inspects volume information; it does not reformat the drive.
3. List volumes with PowerShell
To inspect multiple volumes in one view, run Get-Volume without a drive-letter filter. The cmdlet returns volume objects for volumes it finds; check the FileSystem column to identify each file system. This is useful for surveying available volumes, while the filtered command is more direct when you already know which drive to check.

4. Use fsutil in Command Prompt or Windows Terminal
Microsoft’s fsutil fsinfo volumeinfo command reports volume details including the file-system name. Microsoft lists Windows 11 as supported in its fsutil fsinfo reference.

5. Inspect the drive in Disk Management
Disk Management is a built-in Windows tool for viewing and managing disks and volumes. Open it by right-clicking Start and selecting Disk Management, searching Start for Create and format hard disk partitions, or running diskmgmt.msc. Microsoft describes these options in Disk Management in Windows.
Locate the relevant volume in the tool. If its file-system value is not clear in the view you have, use the volume’s Properties or check it with File Explorer or one of the commands above. Disk Management’s layout can vary between Windows builds.

Windows also provides volume details under Settings > System > Storage > Disks & volumes. Select the target volume and open its properties. Microsoft documents this navigation in Storage settings in Windows.

What the file-system name tells you
Windows documentation gives NTFS as an example for computer disks and external hard drives, and FAT or exFAT as examples for SD cards and flash or USB drives. Those are examples, not a reliable way to infer the format of a particular device. Check the actual volume rather than guessing from its type or intended use; see Microsoft’s file-system examples.
