For a U.S.-focused check, use the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) Sanctions List Search tool. Paste the complete recipient address into the ID # field and search. Address queries are exact matches, so one missing or altered character can hide a listed address. A result requires investigation before you send; no result is not proof that the recipient, wallet, or transfer is safe or permitted.
This procedure addresses OFAC screening. It is not a complete worldwide sanctions check. Your location, citizenship, business activity, transaction, and other applicable laws can determine which rules you must follow.
What an OFAC wallet-address check actually does
OFAC can publish a digital-currency address as identifying information associated with a blocked person on the Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons (SDN) List. Its search tool lets you query that alphanumeric address directly. The result answers a narrow question: does the address you entered exactly match an address currently listed in the search data?

OFAC states that U.S. persons and people otherwise subject to OFAC jurisdiction have sanctions obligations for digital-currency transactions just as they do for transactions in traditional fiat currency.

OFAC’s own warning is important: “OFAC’s digital currency address listings are not likely to be exhaustive.” A search is therefore one control in a decision process, not a certificate of approval.
Decide which sanctions rules apply before searching
Use the OFAC procedure when U.S. jurisdiction is relevant
The documented steps below are for OFAC. They are most directly relevant when you are a U.S. person, operate in the United States, conduct a transaction through a U.S. business or service, or otherwise fall under OFAC jurisdiction. A person elsewhere may also have obligations under local, regional, or other national sanctions regimes.
If you are unsure which authority applies, do not assume that an OFAC no-match resolves the question. For a business payment, a high-value transfer, or a transaction involving a potentially restricted person or location, obtain advice from a qualified sanctions or compliance professional before proceeding.

A wallet address is an alphanumeric destination identifier. It may be associated with a particular currency and network. OFAC address entries identify the currency as well as the address, so the asset and network matter when you compare a search result with the address you intend to use.
Prepare the information you need
- The complete recipient address: copy it from the destination wallet or payment request rather than retyping it.
- The asset and network: record the coin or token and the chain on which the transfer will occur. Similar-looking strings on different networks are not interchangeable.
- The transaction context: know who is receiving the funds, what the payment is for, and which country or service is involved. An address lookup cannot supply that context.
- Your jurisdiction: identify whether you or the organization sending the funds is subject to OFAC or another sanctions authority.
Keep the copied address intact. Do not shorten it, remove a prefix, insert spaces, or paste only the first and last characters. A partial or altered value is a different search query.

Step-by-step: search a crypto address in OFAC’s tool
- Confirm the governing authority. Treat this as an OFAC/U.S. screening step, not a universal global check. If another sanctions regime may apply, plan a separate review under that regime.
- Copy the full destination address. Capture the exact string supplied by the recipient or displayed by your wallet. Confirm the asset and network in your wallet before you search.
- Open OFAC’s live Sanctions List Search tool. Use the official tool at the time you intend to send. Sanctions lists and applicable rules can change.
- Enter the address in the “ID #” field. OFAC specifically identifies this field for digital-currency address or hash queries. Do not put the address into a name field.
- Run the search without changing the string. OFAC says, “The ID # field does not use fuzzy logic, so only exact matches will be returned when searching for digital currency addresses with the Sanctions List Search tool.” A visually similar address, a typo, or a different capitalization where the network treats characters differently may not return the listed entry.
- Inspect any returned entry. Compare the full address, the currency label, the listed person or entity, and the current entry details with your transaction. Save the result and the date if you are acting for a business or need an audit trail.
- Pause if the result could be a match. Do not send while the result is unresolved. Escalate through the compliance process that applies to you rather than trying to make the transaction look different.
- Interpret a no-match narrowly. It means that this exact address did not produce a listed-address result in that search. It does not establish that the recipient is not blocked, that the address is not connected to a sanctioned person, or that the transfer is allowed.
How to evaluate a potential match
Check the address and currency together
Read the entire result, not just a name or a warning banner. Confirm that the address is identical to the destination you copied and that the currency shown in the listing corresponds to the asset and network you plan to use. An entry for one currency should not be casually treated as an entry for every asset or chain.
Verify the listed party and context
OFAC may list an address as identifying information associated with a blocked person. A search hit is a reason to stop and investigate; it is not, by itself, a complete legal analysis of your transaction. Review the current list entry and your organization’s procedures, then obtain appropriate professional guidance when required.

Changing the address, dividing the payment into smaller transfers, using an intermediary, or asking the recipient for a replacement address does not resolve the underlying sanctions concern. Those actions can create additional compliance issues. Keep the transfer on hold until the possible match has been assessed.
What a no-match does—and does not—establish

OFAC says its published digital-currency address listings are not likely to include every address. It also notes that some blocked persons or categories may not appear on the SDN List, including persons blocked under the 50 Percent Rule. That is why a clean address search cannot be described as “safe,” “approved,” or legal clearance.
Address searches and name searches are different
The search tool’s behavior depends on what you are querying. Address screening is an exact-string lookup; name screening uses a different matching method.

If you know the recipient’s legal name, that information can be part of a broader review, but it should not be substituted for checking the actual destination address. Conversely, an address search cannot validate a person’s name or identity.

Why one lookup is not a complete sanctions screen
Published addresses are not exhaustive
OFAC’s warning about incomplete address listings means that an unlisted address can still be associated with a blocked person or other sanctions risk. The absence of a match is a limitation of the available list data, not evidence that the recipient is cleared.
Not every blocked category is represented on the SDN List
OFAC explains that some blocked persons or categories may not be on the SDN List. The 50 Percent Rule is a specific example: entities owned 50 percent or more, directly or indirectly, in the aggregate by one or more blocked persons can be blocked even when the entity is not separately named on the list. A single address query cannot perform that ownership analysis.
Ownership and transaction purpose require context
Blockchain addresses are identifiers, not identity documents. Determining who controls an address, why funds are moving, and whether a transaction involves a sanctioned jurisdiction or service requires information outside the address field. For a consequential transfer, gather the relevant customer, counterparty, and payment details through your applicable compliance process.
Controls for businesses and repeated transfers
OFAC’s virtual-currency industry guidance recommends tailored, risk-based controls rather than a one-time search. A business that sends or receives digital currency may need to screen customer information and transactions, rescreen on an ongoing basis, and investigate connections to listed addresses or other sanctions risks.
Use a documented workflow
- Record the address exactly as screened, the asset and network, the search date, and the result.
- Document who reviewed a potential match and what evidence resolved or escalated it.
- Define when a transaction must be held, rejected, reported, or referred to counsel or a compliance officer.
- Rescreen when list data, customer information, or transaction risk changes rather than relying indefinitely on an old result.
Consider broader analytical controls at scale
OFAC’s industry guidance also discusses blockchain-analytics tools that can help identify connections to listed addresses or other sanctions risks. Such tools supplement, rather than replace, the official list, a risk-based program, and human investigation. The guidance does not endorse a particular provider.

Escalate material uncertainty
If the transfer is for a business, involves substantial value, or produces a possible match, stop the transaction and use the organization’s compliance process. A consumer-facing search page cannot decide every factual or legal question for you.

Searching a shortened address
Symptom: You paste only the beginning and end of the address. Correction: copy and search the complete string. Exact matching cannot evaluate an abbreviated value.
Using the wrong field
Symptom: You put the wallet address into a name-search field. Correction: use the ID # field specified for digital-currency address queries.

Symptom: You alter one character or rely on a visually similar address. Correction: paste directly from the source and compare the complete result character by character.
Ignoring the asset or network
Symptom: The address text appears similar, but the listed currency differs from the transaction asset. Correction: verify the network and currency in both your wallet and the list entry before deciding what the result means.

Treating no result as permission
Symptom: You send immediately after seeing no match. Correction: remember that listings are not exhaustive and that some blocked categories may not be on the SDN List. Complete the other checks required by your jurisdiction and risk level.
Using an old result
Symptom: You rely on a screenshot or search performed long before the intended transfer. Correction: use the live tool at the time of the transaction and retain the date and address that were actually screened.
A practical pre-send decision checklist
- Have you identified whether OFAC or another sanctions authority applies to you?
- Did you copy the complete recipient address without editing it?
- Did you confirm the asset and network?
- Did you enter the address in OFAC’s ID # field?
- Did you inspect the full result, including currency and listed-party details, rather than relying on a headline?
- If there was a potential match, did you place the transfer on hold and escalate it?
- If there was no match, did you avoid treating that as proof of safety or legal permission?
- For a business or high-consequence transfer, did you follow documented, risk-based controls and keep an appropriate record?
How current is the official guidance?
Use the live OFAC search tool when you are ready to send because list contents and applicable rules can change. The FAQ explaining exact address searches was published May 18, 2021. FAQs describing digital-currency address listings and the treatment of digital-currency obligations are dated March 19, 2018; the FAQ defining address information is dated June 6, 2018; the FAQ explaining address identifiers is dated October 15, 2021; and the FAQ discussing categories not necessarily listed on the SDN List was updated August 21, 2024.
Those dates describe the official explanatory material, not a guarantee that the list or your legal obligations remain unchanged. For an unresolved or high-stakes case, rely on current list data and qualified compliance advice.
The safe way to use the result
Use OFAC’s exact address query as an early, documented screening step. A potential match means stop and investigate. A no-match means only that the exact string was not found in that search; it does not prove the recipient is clear or the transfer is allowed. That distinction is the key to checking a wallet address responsibly before sending funds.
