Usually, leaving Bluetooth earbuds charging overnight will not overcharge them if the exact model has a documented system that stops or pauses charging at full charge. That behavior is not universal: check your model’s instructions, use its recommended charger, and do not charge earbuds or a case that is damaged, wet, or unusually hot.
What “overcharging” means for earbuds
People use “overcharging” to mean leaving a device connected after its battery reaches full charge. Some models manage this by stopping or pausing charging; a different and more serious concern is charging a battery that is damaged or being used outside the manufacturer’s limits.
The behavior depends on the model. Bose says the lithium battery in its QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds has an auto-off feature when full, and that charging starts again only after the battery drops below a threshold. Nothing says the charging case for its Ear (stick) stops consuming power once full. These examples describe those products, not all Bluetooth earbuds.
Is it okay to leave earbuds charging overnight?
If your intact earbuds or case have a documented full-charge cutoff, overnight charging may be acceptable under the manufacturer’s instructions. If you do not know how your model behaves, unplugging it when full is the more cautious choice. The Government of Singapore’s Consumer Product Safety Office advises monitoring lithium-ion devices while charging and unplugging them once full. Its guidance is general safety advice; the agency’s charger-safety mark recommendations are specific to Singapore.

Do not treat overnight charging as risk-free when a product is old, modified, counterfeit, damaged, or unidentified. Follow the exact model’s manual, and avoid charging it unattended if you have reason to suspect a problem.
How to charge earbuds more safely
- Use the recommended power supply. Check the product manual rather than assuming any adapter is suitable.
- Choose a suitable location. Charge on a hard surface with airflow, away from direct sunlight and other heat sources.
- Keep moisture away. Dry wet earbuds before charging when the manufacturer instructs you to, and do not charge a wet product.
- Check the device while it charges. Stop if it becomes excessively hot or shows signs of battery damage.
For example, Xiaomi’s Buds 6 guidance says to use a standard branded 5 V charger and Type-C cable, charge between 0 °C and 45 °C, avoid charging in high humidity or while wet, and dry the earbuds before putting them in the case. These are Buds 6 instructions, not universal requirements for other earbuds.

What to do if the earbuds or case seem damaged
Stop using and charging a product if its battery appears swollen, leaks, smells unusual, or becomes excessively hot. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Do not open the case or attempt to modify a built-in battery. The Consumer Product Safety Office’s lithium-ion battery safety guidance specifically warns against charging devices with suspected battery damage, including swelling, chemical leakage, or excessive heat.

Avoid leaving earbuds discharged for a long time, but use your model’s own storage guidance rather than applying one charging interval to every product. Xiaomi recommends charging the Buds 6 earbuds and case at least monthly during extended storage. For the Liberty 3 Pro, soundcore’s guidance recommends regular use to avoid over-discharge, not routinely waiting until 20% or less to recharge, keeping the case charged during storage, and cleaning the charging contacts. These are separate product-specific recommendations, not universal percentage rules.
