On a Galaxy Z Fold, YouTube’s Android app lets you change quality for the video currently playing, set separate defaults for mobile data and Wi‑Fi, adjust playback speed, and seek in 10-second jumps. The menus are YouTube controls, not special Fold hardware controls, and labels can shift slightly as the app is updated. The same basic paths apply whether you watch with the phone closed on the cover screen or unfolded on the larger inner display, although the available resolutions still depend on the video and current conditions.
Change quality for the video you are watching
Use this method when one video is blurry, buffering, or consuming more data than you want. It changes the current stream without necessarily changing your account-wide preferences. A one-video change is useful for testing whether a connection can handle a sharper stream without committing all future mobile playback to that setting.
- Open the YouTube app and start a video.
- Tap the player once to reveal the on-screen controls.
- Tap Settings (the gear icon).
- Tap Quality.
- Choose Auto, Higher picture quality, Data saver, or Advanced.
- If YouTube asks you to choose a resolution, select the resolution you want for this video.
Advanced may not appear for every video. The available resolutions are determined by the upload, YouTube’s available formats, your connection, the player and screen, and device or browser support. Selecting a higher option cannot turn a standard-definition upload into a true high-definition source. If the list stops at a lower resolution, that can reflect the video itself rather than a fault with your Galaxy Z Fold.

What each quality option does
| Option | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Auto | Everyday viewing when conditions change | YouTube changes stream quality as your connection and viewing conditions change, so the picture may move between resolutions. |
| Higher picture quality | Sharper detail on a reliable connection or large unfolded screen | Uses more data and can take longer to start or buffer more often. |
| Data saver | Mobile networks, limited data plans, or weak connections | Reduces picture quality; playback may start faster. |
| Advanced | Choosing a particular resolution when YouTube exposes that control | Only resolutions offered for that video and supported under current conditions can be selected. |
YouTube describes Auto as adapting stream quality to your viewing conditions. A Fold’s larger inner display does not create additional detail that is absent from the source upload. It can make existing detail easier to inspect, but it does not make a standard-definition recording into a high-definition recording.
How to decide between the options
Compare four things before choosing: data use, visible detail, startup and buffering behavior, and whether the current upload exposes the resolution you want. Higher picture quality is sensible when a dependable Wi‑Fi connection and extra data use are acceptable. Data saver is more practical when cellular data is limited or a video needs to start promptly. Auto is the least hands-on choice when you move between stronger and weaker connections. Advanced is for viewers who want to select from the resolutions actually listed for a particular upload.
Do not interpret the word “Higher” as a guarantee of the maximum possible resolution. It is a quality preference, not a promise that every video will play at a particular number. Likewise, Advanced does not guarantee a 4K option or any other specific maximum on every Fold or every upload.
Set default quality for mobile data and Wi‑Fi
Use the preference menu when you want YouTube to begin future videos with a predictable data or quality policy. You can choose independently for cellular data and wireless networks, which lets you conserve a mobile plan while allowing more detail on Wi‑Fi.
- Open YouTube and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Video quality preferences.
- Under the mobile-network setting, choose Auto, Higher picture quality, Data saver, or Advanced.
- Under the Wi‑Fi setting, choose a preference separately.
- If YouTube prompts for a resolution after you choose Advanced, select the resolution to apply when it is available.
These are starting preferences, not a promise that every video will play at one fixed resolution. YouTube can still be limited by the source upload, connection speed, player or screen size, and supported formats. If a video offers no matching resolution, the app uses an available option instead. You may still open the current video’s Quality menu and make a one-time change.
A practical default for a Fold
- Choose Data saver for mobile networks if avoiding data use is more important than maximum detail.
- Choose Higher picture quality on dependable Wi‑Fi when you normally watch on the unfolded display.
- Choose Auto if you move between strong and weak connections and prefer YouTube to adapt.
- Use Advanced only when you routinely need to select a resolution and understand that the desired choice may not be available for every upload.
There is no Fold-specific performance ranking among these modes. The right choice depends on your network, plan, the video’s source quality, and whether avoiding buffering or preserving detail matters more for that session. A setting that works well on home Wi‑Fi may be unsuitable on cellular data, so the separate controls are worth using rather than choosing one compromise for both.

Why a default may not look consistent
Even after you choose a preference, the picture can vary from one video to another. Uploaders provide different source qualities, and YouTube may expose different formats for different videos. Connection speed can also change while you travel or move between networks. The player and screen, including whether the Fold is open or closed, are additional factors in what YouTube can present. A preference guides playback; it does not override those limits.
Change YouTube playback speed
Playback speed is controlled from the same in-player settings menu. It changes how quickly the video runs without changing the video’s resolution. You can use it for lectures, demonstrations, interviews, tutorials, or review without changing your quality choice.
- Open a video in the YouTube app.
- Tap the video once to show controls.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Playback speed.
- Select a speed from the list shown by your app.
The exact list of speed values can vary with the current YouTube interface, so use the values displayed on your Fold rather than assuming a particular minimum or maximum. Android 5.0 or later is required for different playback speeds according to YouTube’s Android help. The speed menu and the Quality menu are separate: changing one does not automatically change the other.
When to use different speeds
- Use a slower setting when following a lecture, demonstration, instructions, or unfamiliar accent.
- Use a faster setting to review familiar material or shorten a long talk, while checking that you still understand key details.
- Return to the normal setting when timing, music, dialogue, or on-screen demonstrations must remain natural.
If a tutorial becomes difficult to follow, slowing it down can help you inspect each step; if you are revisiting material you already know, a faster setting can save time. Choose from the values the app displays instead of relying on a remembered list, because YouTube can change the interface.
Rewind or fast-forward by 10 seconds
YouTube provides a quicker alternative to dragging the progress bar:
- Double-tap the left side of the player to rewind 10 seconds.
- Double-tap the right side of the player to fast-forward 10 seconds.
Tap the video once first if the controls are hidden. The gesture applies to the video player; it is separate from playback-speed and quality preferences. Use the left-side gesture when you miss a sentence or instruction, and the right-side gesture when you want to skip a repeated introduction or other section.

Fix blurry video or buffering
Start with the current video’s quality menu so you can tell whether the problem is a selected mode or a limitation of the stream. Test the menu while the video is playing rather than assuming that the unfolded screen itself is responsible.
Check the available quality choices
- Tap the video to reveal controls.
- Open Settings > Quality.
- See whether a higher or lower choice is available.
- If a higher choice is available but playback stalls, try Auto or Data saver.
- If the picture is unexpectedly soft, check whether the upload itself has only lower-resolution options.
A missing high-resolution choice does not prove that the Fold is malfunctioning. The video may have been uploaded in standard definition, YouTube may not have generated a higher format, or current device and connection conditions may limit the available choices. Conversely, seeing a higher option does not mean your connection will sustain it without pauses.
When buffering is the main problem, Data saver can reduce the amount of video data needed and may start faster. Auto lets YouTube respond to changing conditions. Higher picture quality is appropriate only when you accept its greater data use and the possibility of longer starts or more buffering. There is no universal setting that is best for every connection.

Clear the YouTube cache only when broader playback trouble persists
Cache clearing is a troubleshooting step, not a routine quality setting. If multiple videos continue to behave abnormally after checking Quality, clear the app’s cached files through Android:
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Tap Apps.
- Select YouTube.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Reopen YouTube and replay the video.
Use Clear cache, not a storage-wipe option, unless you deliberately want to remove the app’s stored data and sign-in state. If the problem affects only one upload, cache clearing is unlikely to add a resolution that the upload does not provide. After clearing the cache, check both a previously affected video and another upload to determine whether the issue was app-wide or source-specific.
Understand the difference between YouTube and Samsung video controls
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 manual documents controls for videos played through Samsung Gallery and its video player. Those controls are not replacements for YouTube’s in-player menus. A setting that changes how Samsung displays a local video does not choose a YouTube stream or alter YouTube playback speed.

Samsung’s Video brightness setting
On the Z Fold6, Samsung documents Settings > Advanced features > Video brightness > Bright. Samsung says the feature is available only in some apps and increases battery use. It changes the phone’s display treatment; it does not select a YouTube stream resolution, set YouTube’s mobile and Wi‑Fi defaults, or alter playback speed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you enable that Samsung option and a YouTube video still looks soft, return to YouTube’s own player and inspect Settings > Quality. Display brightness and stream quality solve different problems. A brighter image can improve visibility, but it cannot restore detail absent from the upload.
Why the model distinction matters
The title does not identify a Fold generation. Menus can differ among Fold models, One UI versions, and YouTube app builds. Do not assume that a Samsung Gallery option documented for the Z Fold6 appears identically on every Galaxy Z Fold. For YouTube, use the app’s own Settings > Quality, Video quality preferences, and Playback speed controls. Wording or placement can shift slightly after an app update, but these are the labels to look for.
Choose settings by situation
| Situation | Current-video action | Default preference to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Video looks blurry on a strong Wi‑Fi connection | Open Settings > Quality and inspect available resolutions; choose a higher option if offered. | Higher picture quality for Wi‑Fi, if extra data and possible buffering are acceptable. |
| Playback keeps pausing on cellular data | Try Auto or Data saver in the video’s Quality menu. | Data saver for mobile networks. |
| You want the sharpest available stream for one upload | Use Advanced and select a listed resolution. | Advanced only if you are comfortable choosing per-video resolutions. |
| You need to review a tutorial quickly | Open Settings > Playback speed and select a faster value shown by the app. | No quality preference is required; speed is independent of resolution. |
| You missed a sentence | Double-tap the left side of the player to rewind 10 seconds. | None. |
| You want to skip a repeated section | Double-tap the right side of the player to advance 10 seconds. | None. |
Limits to keep in mind
- No guaranteed maximum resolution: YouTube does not expose the same choices for every upload, and the available list can change with conditions.
- No source-quality upgrade: Choosing a higher setting cannot add detail that was not present in the original upload.
- Quality and speed are separate: Playback speed changes timing, while Quality changes the stream’s picture format.
- Data and buffering trade places: Higher picture quality generally consumes more data and can take longer to start or buffer more; Data saver reduces quality and may start faster.
- App labels can change: YouTube may revise Android menu wording or placement, so look for the equivalent labels if your build differs slightly.
- A larger screen is not a faster network: Unfolding the Fold gives you more viewing area, but it does not increase the upload resolution or your connection capacity.
- Advanced is conditional: It appears only when YouTube provides that control, and it cannot expose a resolution missing from the upload or unsupported under current conditions.
- Brightness is not quality: Samsung’s Video brightness feature affects display treatment in supported apps and can increase battery use; it does not change YouTube’s stream.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does YouTube look blurry on my Galaxy Z Fold?
Open the playing video’s Settings > Quality menu and inspect the available choices. The current stream may be set to Auto or Data saver, the connection may be limiting quality, or the upload may only exist in a lower resolution. A higher selection cannot create detail that was not included in the original upload.
Will unfolding the Galaxy Z Fold make YouTube use a higher resolution?
No. The larger inner display provides more viewing area, but available quality still depends on the source upload, connection, player or screen conditions, and supported formats. Unfolding does not create a higher-resolution source.

Higher picture quality favors more detail but uses more data and may take longer to start or buffer more often. Data saver lowers picture quality and may start faster, which can be preferable on a limited or weak mobile connection.
Best Value
- Expansive foldable 7.6″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display with adaptive 1–120 Hz refresh rate, offering a tablet-like canvas for multitasking, split-screen productivity, and immersive media — while folding down to a compact form for easy portability.
Can I set one YouTube quality preference for Wi‑Fi and another for mobile data?
Yes. Open your profile picture > Settings > Video quality preferences, then choose the mobile-network preference and the Wi‑Fi preference separately. These choices guide future playback but cannot override a video’s available formats or current conditions.
Why can’t I find Advanced or a particular resolution?
Advanced may not be available for every video. YouTube only lists formats exposed for that upload and supported under the current connection, player, screen, and device conditions. The absence of a desired resolution does not by itself indicate a Fold problem.
How do I change YouTube playback speed on a Fold?
Open the video, tap it to show controls, tap Settings, choose Playback speed, and select one of the values shown. YouTube’s Android help requires Android 5.0 or later for different playback speeds.
How do I jump backward or forward without dragging the timeline?
Double-tap the left side of the player to rewind 10 seconds or double-tap the right side to fast-forward 10 seconds. Tap the video once first if the controls are hidden.
Should I clear YouTube’s cache to fix every quality problem?
No. First check the video’s Settings > Quality menu. If multiple videos continue to have broader playback trouble, clear only the cache through Android Settings > Apps > YouTube > Storage > Clear cache, then reopen YouTube. Cache clearing cannot add a resolution that an upload does not provide.
Is Samsung’s Video brightness setting the same as YouTube quality?
No. On the Z Fold6, Samsung documents Settings > Advanced features > Video brightness > Bright for supported apps. It changes display treatment and can increase battery use; YouTube’s stream resolution, quality preferences, and playback speed remain controlled inside YouTube.
The Bottom Line
For a single video, use YouTube’s player Settings > Quality. For ongoing behavior, set mobile-network and Wi‑Fi choices under profile picture > Settings > Video quality preferences. Use Playback speed for timing and double-tap the player sides to move 10 seconds. If quality is missing or buffering persists, remember that the upload and current connection set real limits; Samsung’s separate video-brightness controls do not change YouTube’s stream.
