To change your Tumblr icon in the app, open your blog from the account button, tap the palette icon to edit its appearance, then tap the blog avatar and choose a new image. Tumblr calls the icon an avatar or profile picture; it recommends an image that is 128×128 pixels or larger, no more than 10MB, and in JPEG, PNG, or WEBP format.
Change your Tumblr icon in the app
- Tap the account button to view your blog.
- Tap the palette icon at the top of the screen to open the appearance editor.
- Tap the blog avatar to upload a new image. The same control also lets you hide the avatar.
Tumblr’s appearance guide does not describe a separate save or confirmation step. The avatar is part of your blog’s appearance, not its custom theme, and appearance changes apply in mobile and web views.
Prepare an image that fits Tumblr’s guidance
Tumblr recommends an avatar image of 128×128 pixels and a file size of 10MB or less. The listed formats are JPEG, PNG, and WEBP. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every image will look identical in every context.

Tumblr describes the avatar as “what people will associate with your Tumblr” in its Getting Started on Tumblr guide. You can make one yourself or commission another user, but get permission before using someone else’s art.

If your Tumblr avatar will not update
- Check the file first. Confirm it is JPEG, PNG, WEBP, or a GIF you are comfortable having converted to a static image, and that it meets Tumblr’s stated size guidance.
- Consider whether the blog was flagged as mature. Tumblr says this may be why an avatar reverted to the default or cannot be updated after format checks. It is a possible cause, not a diagnosis; consult Tumblr’s troubleshooting guidance and follow its appeal information if relevant.
Change the icon on Tumblr’s website instead
If you cannot use the app, Tumblr’s other documented route is to open Settings, select the blog, and choose Edit appearance. This edits the same blog appearance as the app route, so the change applies in mobile and web views.
