To change common Bing preferences, open Bing.com, select the menu in the upper-right corner, choose Settings, then select the relevant section. For SafeSearch, open More, choose Strict, Moderate, or Off, and select Save. Suggestions, language, location, personalization, and history use separate controls, so changing one setting does not change all of the others.
Microsoft Support describes SafeSearch as “a Bing setting that filters out inappropriate web content.” Search history for a signed-in Microsoft account is managed through the Privacy Dashboard, while Windows has a separate Search SafeSearch control that can override the Bing.com choice on that device.
What “search settings” means in Bing
Bing does not have one master switch for every search-related behavior. Its settings are grouped by function, and some controls live outside Bing.com.

- Search suggestions: controls predictions that appear while you type.
- Language and location: help tailor result language, regional results, and related features.
- Voice search and personalization: control additional search behaviors when those options are available in your session or region.
- Search history: controls whether new searches are recorded and whether existing activity is removed.
- Windows Search permissions: a separate Windows setting that can impose SafeSearch on Bing in the browser.
The labels and available controls can differ by country or region, account type, browser session, and Microsoft product updates. If a control is missing, it may not be offered in your region or for the account you are using.

Change SafeSearch on Bing.com
SafeSearch is the setting to use when you want Bing to filter explicit content. The change is made from Bing.com and must be saved.
- Open a browser and go to Bing.com.
- Select the menu in the upper-right corner of the page.
- Select Settings.
- Open More.
- Under SafeSearch, select Strict, Moderate, or Off.
- Select Save.
Run a new search after saving to confirm that the page reflects the selected behavior. If the setting appears unchanged, check whether Windows Search is enforcing Strict mode, as described below.
What each SafeSearch mode filters
| Mode | Filtering behavior | When it is useful |

| Moderate | Filters explicit images and videos, but does not filter explicit text. | A middle setting when image and video filtering is wanted without filtering text results. |
| Off | Does not filter explicit content. | For adults who deliberately do not want Bing’s SafeSearch filtering. |
Microsoft says Moderate is the default in most countries and regions, but local norms or laws can affect the default. People under 18 may have SafeSearch set automatically to Strict to comply with local law. Some SafeSearch features are not available in every country or region, so the options shown on your screen take precedence.
Turn search suggestions on or off
Search suggestions are the predicted queries Bing displays as you type. They are independent of SafeSearch.

- Open Bing Settings.
- Go to the Search section.
- Clear See search suggestions as you type to turn suggestions off, or select it to turn them on.
Microsoft states that suggestions remain off until you clear your cookies or turn the option back on. If suggestions return unexpectedly, clearing site cookies may have reset the preference; repeat the steps and leave the option cleared.
Set language, location, and related preferences
Bing Settings can include controls for language, location, SafeSearch, voice search, suggestions, and personalization. Language and location choices can change the language of the interface and help Bing tailor results to your area.
- Open Bing.com and select the upper-right menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Review the sections shown for your account and region.
- Adjust the language, location, voice-search, suggestion, or personalization control you need.
- Use Save whenever the page presents a save button, then run a fresh search.
Do not assume that every Bing user sees identical menus. Microsoft can expose different controls by region, product version, sign-in state, or feature availability. A location preference also does not necessarily replace device location permissions or the location used by another Microsoft service.
Manage Bing search history and privacy
History has two separate jobs: stopping future entries and removing entries that already exist. Turning history off does not erase older activity.

Stop new searches from being added
- Open Bing Settings.
- Go to the Search History page.
- Turn off Show new searches here.
This prevents new searches from being added to the Bing history view. Existing entries remain until you clear them separately.
Clear existing Bing history
On the Search History page, use the available clear or delete control to remove previous entries. Follow the confirmation prompt before leaving the page. Deleting the displayed Bing history is a different action from disabling collection of new searches.
Use the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard for account activity
When you are signed in to a personal Microsoft account, search activity and related data controls are handled through the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard. Open the dashboard from your Microsoft account privacy controls, review the search-activity section, and use its clear controls for the records you want removed.
Searches made while you are not signed in are not shown on that dashboard. Work or school accounts have their own history controls administered through the organization’s Microsoft account environment, so a personal-account procedure may not apply.

Change the Windows Search SafeSearch setting
Windows Search has a separate SafeSearch setting. It can affect Bing searches made in the browser on that device, even when Bing.com shows a different preference.
Windows 10
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Search.
- Select Permissions & History.
- Review the SafeSearch choice and select the level you need.
Windows 11
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Search permissions.
- Review and change the SafeSearch choice.
Microsoft’s Windows behavior is important when settings conflict: a Windows Strict selection is shared with Bing in the browser and overrides the Bing.com SafeSearch preference for that device. Windows Moderate or Off defers to the SafeSearch choice made on Bing.com.

SafeSearch changed but results still look filtered
- Check Windows Search permissions. Windows Strict can override Bing.com.
- Confirm that you selected Save after choosing the Bing mode.
- Check whether local law, age protections, or regional availability is enforcing Strict mode.
- Start a new search or refresh the page after saving.
Suggestions keep returning
Open Bing Settings > Search and clear See search suggestions as you type again. Microsoft notes that cookie clearing can reset the preference, so review the setting after deleting cookies or using a privacy-focused browser session.

Turning off Show new searches here only stops future additions. Return to Search History and use the separate clear control for existing entries. If the activity belongs to a signed-in Microsoft account, also review the Privacy Dashboard.

The Privacy Dashboard does not show a search
Confirm whether the search was made while signed in. Microsoft says searches made while signed out are not displayed on the dashboard. If you used a work or school account, use that account’s organizational history controls instead of a personal-account dashboard.
A setting or menu is missing
Sign-in state, country or region, account type, and staged product changes can affect which controls are available. Review the settings that are actually presented in your Bing session rather than assuming another region’s menu will be identical.
A practical checklist for changing Bing preferences
- Start at Bing.com and open the upper-right Settings menu.
- For SafeSearch, choose More, select a mode, and select Save.
- For suggestions, use Search and change See search suggestions as you type.
- For language, location, voice, or personalization, edit the corresponding control shown in Bing Settings.
- For history, distinguish stopping new entries from clearing existing entries.
- For a signed-in personal account, use the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard for account-level activity.
- For Windows devices, check the operating-system Search permissions page if Bing.com and your results disagree.

The correct path depends on what you are trying to change. SafeSearch, suggestions, history, account privacy, and Windows enforcement are related but separate controls, so changing one will not automatically update the others.
