Godlike.Host offers hosted Palworld servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To change a Palworld dedicated server’s public name or description, stop the server, edit the ServerName and ServerDescription entries in the OptionSettings line of PalWorldSettings.ini, save the file, and start the server again. If a hosting panel or Docker image generates that file at startup, make the change in the panel or through its environment variables instead; otherwise your edit may be replaced.
What you need to edit
Palworld stores the dedicated server’s descriptive settings in an INI file named PalWorldSettings.ini. The two entries relevant to this task are:
ServerName— the name shown for the server.ServerDescription— the accompanying description text.
Both values belong inside the file’s single OptionSettings=(...) group. They are not separate INI sections. A valid fragment looks like this:
OptionSettings=(ServerName="Your Name",ServerDescription="Your description")Your file will normally contain many more settings before and after these keys. Keep the complete OptionSettings group intact and change only the values you need.

First determine how your server is managed
The correct location and editing method depend on whether you run the dedicated server yourself or a control panel or container starts it for you.

If you are unsure which category applies, check what launches the server. A normal executable started from a Windows shortcut, shell, or service is generally self-hosted. A web dashboard with Start/Stop buttons is a hosted panel. A deployment using a container compose file or a docker run command is Docker-managed.
Before editing: stop the server and make a backup
Stop the Palworld server cleanly before opening the configuration file. Community setup guidance reports that edits made while the process is running can be overwritten when the server shuts down. Stopping first also prevents the game from loading a partially saved line.
- Tell connected players that the server will be offline briefly.
- Use the server console, service manager, hosting panel, or container control to stop the server.
- Wait until the server process has exited completely.
- Copy
PalWorldSettings.inito a safe backup location before changing it.
Do not edit a copy in a download folder and assume it is active. Confirm that you are changing the file in the directory used by the running installation.
Where is PalWorldSettings.ini?
For a self-hosted dedicated server, the file is under the server’s Pal/Saved/Config/ directory. The final folder differs by operating system:

The path shown is relative to the dedicated server’s installation directory. If you installed the server through a management tool, its data directory may be elsewhere; search within that installation for the Pal folder rather than creating a second configuration tree.

Some installations do not create the saved configuration folders until the server has run at least once. Start the server once, stop it, and check the path again. If PalWorldSettings.ini is still absent, create it from the supplied default template:
- Find
DefaultPalWorldSettings.iniin the dedicated server files. - Copy that file into the appropriate
Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/orPal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/folder. - Rename the copy exactly to
PalWorldSettings.ini. - Open the renamed copy and edit its
OptionSettingsline.
Do not rename the original default template in place if the server may need it later. The required file is the copy named PalWorldSettings.ini.
Change the name and description on a self-hosted server
1. Open the correct file in a plain-text editor
Use an editor that preserves plain text, such as a basic text editor or a code editor. Avoid word processors, which can add formatting characters or “smart” quotation marks. Keep a backup open or available so you can restore the original if the server fails to start.
2. Find the OptionSettings line
Search for OptionSettings=. The settings are normally written as one comma-separated group beginning with OptionSettings=( and ending with ). Do not create a second OptionSettings line. If the line wraps visually in your editor, that does not necessarily mean it contains line breaks; preserve the file’s existing layout.

3. Replace the two string values
Change the text between the double quotes after ServerName= and ServerDescription=. For example:
OptionSettings=(ServerName="Co-op Valley",ServerDescription="Casual survival server for friends",Difficulty=None,DayTimeSpeedRate=1.000000)The surrounding settings in this example are illustrative; retain the values already present in your own file. The important formatting rules are:
- Use the exact key names
ServerNameandServerDescription. - Put a comma between adjacent settings.
- Enclose each value in straight double quotes.
- Keep the entire group inside the existing parentheses.
- Use
TrueorFalsefor Boolean settings elsewhere in the file; do not convert the whole line to JSON or YAML syntax.
If the keys already exist, edit their values instead of adding duplicates. Duplicate keys can produce ambiguous results, and a later occurrence may override an earlier one depending on the parser.
4. Save without changing the extension
Save the file as PalWorldSettings.ini, not PalWorldSettings.ini.txt. On Windows, enable file-name extensions in File Explorer if necessary so you can verify the final name. Preserve the existing encoding and line endings where possible.
5. Start the server and verify the load
Start the server using the same method you normally use. Watch the startup output or log for confirmation that the configuration loaded. Then check the server listing or connect from a client to confirm the displayed name and description. If the old text remains, stop the server again before troubleshooting; do not repeatedly edit a live process.

Change the values in a hosted control panel
Many game-server panels expose a Startup tab, an environment-variable page, or a command-line field. Some providers write ServerName, maximum player count, passwords, and related values into PalWorldSettings.ini every time the instance starts. In that setup, a manual INI edit can appear to work until the next restart and then revert.
- Stop the instance from the panel.
- Open the panel’s Startup, Variables, or Palworld configuration page.
- Look for a field labelled Server Name, ServerName, Description, or ServerDescription.
- Enter the new values in the panel’s fields or startup command, following its quoting rules.
- Save the panel configuration and start the server.
- Check the generated INI file or startup log only as verification; treat the panel as the authoritative source.
If the panel has no name or description field, ask the provider whether its startup script regenerates the Palworld settings file. Do not assume that uploading a modified INI will persist when the provider controls the launch command.

Docker images commonly translate environment variables into Palworld’s settings section during container startup. The johnnyknighten Palworld image documents the PALWORLD_ prefix mapping: PALWORLD_ServerName becomes ServerName in PalWorldSettings.ini. The equivalent description variable follows the same naming pattern, PALWORLD_ServerDescription, if supported by the image version you are using.
Set the variables in the compose file, stack definition, or container environment that actually starts your server. A generic compose fragment is:

PALWORLD_ServerDescription: "Casual survival server for friends"Use the image’s own documentation to confirm the exact variable list before deploying. Environment-variable support is an image feature, not a Palworld-wide standard. After changing the values, recreate or restart the container as required by that image so its startup script writes the new settings.

Why your Palworld server name is not changing
The server was running when you edited the file
A running process may keep the old values in memory, and community guidance warns that shutdown can overwrite an edit made during runtime. Stop the server, restore the intended values, save the file, and then start it again.
You edited the wrong installation
Multiple Palworld copies, test instances, or backup folders can contain identically named files. Identify the installation used by the active service or container, then follow its Pal/Saved/Config/ path. A change in an unused directory has no effect.

Confirm that the active file is exactly PalWorldSettings.ini. Common mistakes include leaving the template name as DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini or accidentally creating PalWorldSettings.ini.txt.
The OptionSettings syntax is damaged
Check for missing commas, unmatched parentheses, curly quotation marks, duplicate keys, or a line split by inserted hard returns. Compare the edited line with the original backup and change only the two quoted values. If the server stops loading settings, restore the backup and make one small edit at a time.
A panel or container rewrote the file
If the new value disappears immediately after startup, inspect the panel’s Startup settings or the container’s environment. Move the change to that authoritative configuration, then restart. Editing the generated INI alone will not survive regeneration.
The description is not visible where you expected
The server browser and client interface determine which fields they display. Confirm that the value is present in the loaded configuration and test from a fresh client session. A report from one user suggests that a unique name and a restart may be needed before a server appears in Community Servers search, but that behavior is unverified and should not be treated as a guaranteed requirement.

Version considerations
Pocketpair’s official parameter documentation page available for this guidance is labelled version 0.6.8 and points readers to version 1.0.4 as the latest release. The 1.0.4 page was not verified here, so the key names and general file pattern above should be checked against the documentation bundled with your current server build or hosting image. If a future update changes the path or configuration format, follow that release’s instructions rather than forcing an older template into the new installation.
Keep a dated backup of the working file before updating the server. After an update, compare the new default template with your backup and reapply only the custom values you still need. This reduces the risk of carrying obsolete parameters into a newer build.
