Change a FiveM server’s listing identity in the server’s server.cfg file. Use sv_hostname for the server-specific hostname, sets sv_projectName for the project name, and sets sv_projectDesc for the short project description. Save the file, perform a full server restart, then verify the listing. Restarting an individual resource does not reload these convars.
Cfx.re’s server-command documentation lists these as string server variables and shows the sets prefix for project metadata: Cfx.re server commands documentation.
Which FiveM setting controls each piece of text?
FiveM uses three related convars. They are often confused because players may see more than one of them while browsing or connecting. Keep all three intentional so the name shown in different parts of the client is consistent.

The sets prefix is required for the two project fields. Do not add sets before sv_hostname unless your configuration specifically documents a different convention. Cfx.re’s support material warns that omitting either project field can produce a startup warning or prevent the server from appearing correctly in the list: Cfx.re server issues.

Before editing: locate the active configuration
You need access to the configuration file loaded by the process that starts your FiveM server. In a self-managed installation this is normally server.cfg in the server root or the directory passed to the startup command. A host control panel may generate or override that file, so the text you edit is not always the text the running instance uses.
Confirm the file and make a backup
- Stop the server gracefully from its console or hosting panel.
- Open the server root and identify the
server.cfgreferenced by your startup command or panel. - Make a copy such as
server.cfg.backupbefore changing anything. - Search the entire file for
sv_hostname,sv_projectName, andsv_projectDesc. Duplicate declarations can cause the last value read to win, making an earlier edit appear ineffective.
Use a plain-text editor. Save the file as UTF-8 or the format already used by your host, and keep quotation marks straight: ". A forum report claims that typographic “smart” quotes can break parsing; this is not confirmed by official documentation, but avoiding them is a sensible configuration practice.

Step-by-step: change the name and description in server.cfg
- Open the active file. Edit the
server.cfgthat your startup command or panel actually loads. - Replace the hostname line. Add or edit one line in this form:
sv_hostname "My City RP | Serious Roleplay". - Set the project name. Add or edit:
sets sv_projectName "My City RP". - Set the project description. Add or edit a concise sentence:
sets sv_projectDesc "A serious roleplay community with custom jobs and vehicles.". - Remove conflicting duplicates. Leave one active declaration for each variable. Comment out obsolete lines with the comment style already used in your file, or delete them after taking the backup.
- Save the file. Check that every opening quote has a matching closing quote and that no line contains an accidental line break inside the value.
- Start the complete server process again. A resource restart, script reload, or reconnect is not enough; these convars are read when the server starts.
- Verify the result. Refresh the FiveM server list and inspect your entry. Also test a direct connection or the connection screen, because clients and builds may present hostname and project metadata in different places.
Here is a complete minimal example:

Choosing values that display cleanly
Write the hostname for recognition
sv_hostname is the server-specific name. Put the identifying information players need first: language or region, roleplay style, and the community name. Keep promotional text short so the useful part is not cut off in a narrow list view. For example:
sv_hostname "[EN] My City RP | Serious RP"sv_hostname "[EU] Harbor County | Economy RP"sv_hostname "New Horizon Freeroam"
Some third-party FiveM listing guidance reports that color codes ^1 through ^9 work in sv_hostname. Treat colors as optional formatting, and test them in your current client because rendering can vary: xGamingServer’s hostname-tag guide.
Use the project name as the stable identity
sv_projectName should normally be the community or project name without a long advertisement. Keep it aligned with the recognizable portion of sv_hostname. If the project name is missing, a forum report says FiveM may fall back to a truncated hostname; that report is community experience rather than an official guarantee. Setting the project name explicitly avoids relying on that fallback.
Make the description a short sentence
Cfx.re describes sv_projectDesc as a short description written as a sentence. Explain what a player will find rather than repeating the title: game mode, language, region, or a defining feature are useful. Examples include:
sets sv_projectDesc "A serious roleplay community with custom jobs and vehicles."sets sv_projectDesc "English-language economy roleplay with whitelisted emergency services."sets sv_projectDesc "Casual freeroam, custom maps, and regular community events."
No authoritative current character limit was confirmed. Third-party guidance ranges from roughly one line to one or two sentences, so favor a compact sentence and avoid stuffing the field with links, repeated punctuation, or a second advertisement.

Where players may see the values
The exact presentation is not consistent across the available reports. Community forum users describe the project name and description as listing metadata, while sv_hostname is also reported in direct-connect or connection contexts. Other guides say the description appears after expanding a list entry or on the connecting screen. Client builds can change this UI, so do not promise one fixed location.
After restarting, check the server browser entry, expand the entry if the client offers that control, and perform a direct connection test. If one view still shows old text while another is current, continue with the troubleshooting checks below rather than assuming the file syntax is wrong.

Restarting correctly
A full restart means stopping and starting the FiveM server process that reads server.cfg. It does not mean restarting a resource with a console command. The convars are loaded during server startup, and a resource reload cannot replace them.
Self-managed server
- Announce a maintenance window if players are online.
- Use the server console’s normal stop procedure and wait until the process exits.
- Confirm that no second instance is still running from a service manager, screen session, or scheduled task.
- Start the same launch command used previously.
- Watch the startup log for configuration or quote errors, then check the listing.
Managed hosting panel
Use the panel’s stop and start or restart controls, not only an in-game resource restart. Some managed hosts expose server variables in a separate settings page and regenerate server.cfg. A Cfx forum reply reports that a hosting panel can override file values; verify the panel’s hostname and project fields before editing the file again.
Configuration file or hosting panel?
There are two practical ways to make this change. With a self-managed server, editing server.cfg gives you a visible, repeatable source of truth. You can keep the three lines in version control, review a change before deployment, and restore the backup if startup fails. The trade-off is that you must know which launch command and included files are active.
With managed hosting, the panel may be the authoritative interface. It can expose hostname and project fields, then write them into a generated configuration at restart. This is convenient, but a manual edit can be replaced the next time the panel saves settings. If the panel offers both a text editor and dedicated variables, determine which one wins by changing one value, restarting, and checking the resulting file or startup output. Do not maintain different values in both places.

Saving a panel form or uploading a file does not make a running process adopt the new convars until the complete server is stopped and started.
Plan the three values before you save
Writing the text first prevents accidental mismatches. Decide on the durable community name, then derive the other fields from it:

- Project identity: choose the short name players should remember. Use that wording in
sv_projectName. - Browser hostname: add only useful qualifiers, such as
[EN],[EU], or the server mode. Put the project identity where it will remain recognizable if the client narrows the display. - Description: write one compact sentence that explains the experience. Mention a defining mode or feature instead of duplicating the hostname.
Read the three lines together before restarting. A different spelling, inconsistent capitalization, or an old invitation link can make players think they found a different server. Because no authoritative character limit is established, preview the values in the actual client and shorten them if the interface truncates them.
How to validate a successful change
Validation should distinguish a configuration problem from a listing refresh or client-display issue. First, inspect the startup output for a parsing error and confirm the process started from the expected directory. Next, refresh the browser and search for the project name rather than relying on the old position in the list. Open the entry if the client provides an expanded view, then perform a direct connection test. Record which text appears in each view.

The reports about display location are inconsistent, and client builds can present project metadata differently. Recheck the active file, duplicates, panel settings, and restart status first.
Troubleshooting when the old name remains
The file was not the active file
Many installations contain more than one configuration file. Check the startup command, service definition, or panel configuration to see exactly which file is passed to the server. Edit that file, restart, and inspect the startup log for the path being loaded.
A duplicate declaration wins
Search every included configuration file for all three variables. An exec line can load another file after your edits. Remove or update later declarations so only the intended values remain active. Keep a backup before restructuring includes.
The server was not fully restarted
If you only restarted a resource or reconnected your client, the old convars remain in the running process. Stop the complete server and start it again, then allow time for the listing to refresh.

Compare the saved file with the panel’s startup or variables page. If the panel owns the setting, change it there and restart from the panel. Otherwise, the panel may overwrite your manual edit at the next start.
The project fields are missing
Cfx.re support guidance says missing sv_projectName or sv_projectDesc can trigger a startup error or prevent correct list visibility. Add both lines with the sets prefix, use straight quotes, and restart.

Quotes or characters broke parsing
Replace curly quotation marks with ordinary straight quotes and remove unescaped line breaks. Temporarily simplify the values to letters, numbers, spaces, and basic punctuation. Restart and verify; then add optional color codes or separators one at a time.

Refresh the server list, close and reopen FiveM, and test from another client if possible. Compare the browser entry with a direct connection. If only one view is stale after a confirmed restart, the discrepancy may be client-side or related to how that build displays project metadata.
A false “hostname rework” notice appears
A Cfx.re bug report documents a false notice on Windows artifacts b31623 and b31689 even when sv_projectName and sv_projectDesc were correctly set. The report is artifact-specific and does not establish that every such notice indicates a configuration failure: Cfx.re bug report.
Editing safely in a team or production environment
- Keep one source of truth. Decide whether Git, a deployment script, or a hosting panel owns
server.cfg; do not maintain competing manual copies. - Record the restart. Note the time and artifact or build used when making a naming change so you can correlate startup logs and listing refreshes.
- Use a rollback copy. If startup fails after an edit, restore the backup, start the server, and then reintroduce the change with simpler text.
- Separate identity from announcements. Put a durable community name in
sv_projectName; avoid changing it for every event, since players and staff use it to recognize the project. - Test in the real client. Configuration syntax can parse successfully while the final text is truncated or displayed differently in a particular FiveM build.

How long can the description be?
No authoritative current character limit was confirmed. Keep sv_projectDesc to one compact sentence, roughly one line when possible, and verify how it renders in your client.
Can I use color codes in the server name?
Third-party guidance reports that ^1 through ^9 work in sv_hostname. Treat this as optional formatting and test the result in your current FiveM client because rendering can vary.
Will restarting a resource update the listing?
No. These convars are read when the server process starts. Stop and start the full FiveM server, then refresh the listing.
Where will players see the description?
