To change a FiveM server icon, create a PNG that is exactly 96×96 pixels, place it in the same directory as server.cfg, add load_server_icon "your-file.png" to that configuration file, and restart FXServer. The icon may not refresh immediately on the main server-browser page, so verify it by connecting directly to the server IP as well.
The exact method
FiveM uses the FXServer configuration command load_server_icon to select the image displayed for a server. The command reads a PNG file from the server’s own filesystem and sets that file as the server icon. It does not fetch an image from a web URL.
- Prepare a PNG image with dimensions of exactly 96×96 pixels.
- Upload the PNG to the server root, in the same folder that contains
server.cfg. - Open
server.cfgand add a line such asload_server_icon "my-server.png". - Save the file and restart FXServer.
- Check the icon from a direct server connection if the public browser listing still shows the old image.
The filename in the configuration must be the complete filename, including its extension and capitalization. For example, MyServer.png and myserver.png are different names on systems with case-sensitive filesystems.

One forum user reported that an icon was rejected because of file size and suggested keeping it at or below 100 kB. That is an individual report, not a confirmed official limit, so treat 100 kB as a practical troubleshooting target rather than a guaranteed rule. If a valid 96×96 PNG still fails, exporting a smaller, optimized copy is reasonable.

Prepare a 96×96 PNG
Start with a square canvas
Open the logo or artwork in an image editor and create a square canvas. Set both width and height to 96 pixels before exporting. If the source image is rectangular, cropping it to a square generally preserves a recognizable mark better than stretching it. When an editor offers a “resample” or “keep aspect ratio” option, make sure the final document reports 96 pixels in both directions; a 96-pixel width with a different height will not satisfy the requirement.
Keep important details inside the safe area
The icon is small, so thin outlines, long text, and fine decorative details can disappear after reduction. Keep the main symbol centered, leave a small margin around the edges, and use strong contrast between the foreground and background. If the logo includes words, test it at its actual 96×96 display size rather than judging it only while zoomed in.
Export as PNG
Use the editor’s export or “save as” function and select PNG. Confirm that the resulting file name ends in .png, not a double extension such as logo.png.png. Transparency is permitted, but a transparent logo should still have enough contrast against the backgrounds where players will see it.
Remove problematic metadata when necessary
A forum user reported that Adobe Photoshop metadata caused trouble for an icon and suggested re-exporting without metadata. This is not documented as a universal requirement, but it is a useful recovery step when the dimensions, format, path, and filename are all correct. In that situation, open the image in another editor or use an export option that strips ancillary metadata, then save a fresh PNG.

Find the server root and upload the file
What “same directory” means
The required location is the directory that contains the active server.cfg file. It is often called the server root in hosting panels and setup guides. Do not assume that a resource directory, the resources folder, or a local downloads folder is the correct location. The command resolves the filename from the server’s configuration context, so the PNG must be available on that machine in the directory expected by the running instance.
Using a hosting control panel
- Open the panel’s file manager or file-upload area for the FiveM server.
- Navigate to the folder where the active
server.cfgis shown. - Upload the 96×96 PNG into that folder, not into a subfolder unless your configuration line includes the corresponding path and your setup supports it.
- Check the displayed filename character by character, including uppercase and lowercase letters.
- Open
server.cfgin the panel editor and add the command described below.
Control panels use different labels and directory layouts, so the exact button names vary. The important checks are that the file is on the server, the file manager shows it beside server.cfg, and the running instance uses that same configuration file.

Using a remote file-transfer client
Connect to the server with the transfer method provided by your host, locate server.cfg, and upload the PNG into that directory. After uploading, refresh the remote listing and verify the final name. A successful upload to your computer, rather than to the server, will not change the icon.
Add load_server_icon to server.cfg
Open the configuration file as plain text and add one line containing the command and the exact PNG filename:

load_server_icon "my-server.png"The quotation marks match the official Cfx.re example and are helpful when a filename contains spaces. A simple filename without spaces can also be written without quotes in many configurations, but using the quoted form consistently avoids ambiguity.
Choose a clear filename
Names such as my-server.png or cityrp-icon.png make it easier to identify the asset. Avoid renaming the file after adding the line unless you update the configuration at the same time. If the host’s file manager changes capitalization or adds a suffix during an upload, copy the name exactly as it appears on the server into server.cfg.

Some third-party instructions claim FXServer automatically detects a file named icon.png. The documented and broadly used method is the explicit load_server_icon command. Add the command even if you also happen to keep a file with that generic name; automatic detection is not a substitute for the configuration line.
Restart FXServer and verify the result
Restart the complete server process
Save server.cfg and perform a normal stop-and-start or restart through your host’s control panel, service manager, or launch script. Reloading a resource is not the same as restarting FXServer: the icon command is read as part of server startup. If the panel shows separate “restart resource” and “restart server” actions, choose the server-level restart.

Read the startup console
Watch the console while the server starts. A dimension error may identify an image that is not 96×96. A forum user also reported the message Could not open 96 for reading when the path could not be found. The wording can look unusual, but it indicates that the server was unable to open the expected file, so check the filename and location first.
Check from a direct connection
After the restart, connect using the server’s IP address or direct connection option and inspect the displayed icon. A forum report notes that the logo may remain unchanged on the main server-browser page even after the server has loaded the new file. The exact propagation delay for the public listing is not documented, so do not treat an unchanged browser thumbnail alone as proof that the configuration failed.

The server starts, but no icon appears
- Confirm that the line is present in the active
server.cfg, not in a backup or a different configuration file. - Verify that the PNG is in the same directory as that file.
- Compare the configuration name with the uploaded name one character at a time, including capitalization and the
.pngextension. - Restart FXServer after saving the change.
- Test by direct IP connection before judging the public browser listing.
The console says the image is not 96×96
Open the actual uploaded file and inspect its pixel dimensions. Resize or crop it to exactly 96 pixels wide by 96 pixels high, export it as PNG again, replace the server copy, and restart. Do not rely on the dimensions of the original artwork or on the size shown in a file manager; the pixel dimensions embedded in the PNG are what matter.
The console cannot open the file
Messages such as Could not open 96 for reading point to a path or file-access problem. Check for these common causes:

- The file was uploaded beside a different
server.cfgthan the one the server actually loads. - The configuration uses
logo.pngwhile the uploaded file is namedlogo.PNGorlogo (1).png. - The upload went into a subfolder, while the command names only the file.
- The file exists locally but was never transferred to the server.
- The server was not restarted after the upload or configuration edit.
Correct the path or name, save the file, and restart before testing again.

The PNG is valid but still rejected
Re-export a clean PNG without Photoshop metadata, as suggested in a forum report. Also try an optimized copy below 100 kB; that threshold is a community report rather than an official specification. Recheck that the final export remains exactly 96×96 pixels after optimization.
An externally hosted image does not work
The command expects a local file path, not an image URL. A forum user reported that Imgur blocked use of a hosted image for server icons. Upload the PNG to the server directory beside server.cfg instead of placing an Imgur or other web address in the command.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the wrong dimensions: A 128×128, 256×256, or rectangular image does not meet the documented 96×96 requirement.
- Putting the file in
resources: The icon belongs besideserver.cfg, unless your particular configuration explicitly resolves a different valid path. - Changing only the browser cache: Clearing a client cache cannot fix a missing server file or a configuration error.
- Forgetting the extension:
load_server_icon "my-server"does not name the same file asmy-server.png. - Ignoring case: A case mismatch can work differently between local development and a case-sensitive hosted server.
- Restarting a resource instead of FXServer: The server command is loaded at startup.
- Expecting immediate browser-list updates: The public listing may lag even when a direct connection shows the new icon.
A repeatable replacement workflow
Use this sequence whenever you replace the artwork later:
