Change the name on your Epic account from Epic’s website, not from your PlayStation or Xbox profile. After you verify the account email, open Account settings, edit Display name, and select Continue. Epic allows one display-name change every two weeks.
This changes the Epic identity shown in the Epic Games Launcher, on Epic’s forum and AnswerHub, on PC, Mac, mobile, and Nintendo Switch. It does not change a PlayStation Online ID or an Xbox gamertag.
Which name are you changing?
Epic accounts and console accounts can show different names because they are controlled by different services. The Epic Games display name belongs to your Epic account. Epic says it appears in the Epic Games Launcher, Epic’s official forum and AnswerHub, and while playing Epic games on PC, Mac, Switch, or mobile. Nintendo Switch uses that Epic display name.

PlayStation and Xbox use their own platform identities when you play on those consoles. Epic’s support documentation explicitly says that changing the Epic display name does not affect a PSN ID or Xbox gamertag, so your in-game name can vary by platform.

Epic’s display-name locator explains where each identity is used: Where can I find my Epic Games Display Name? If you want a different PSN ID or Xbox gamertag, you must use that platform’s account settings instead.
Why names look different on the same account
A single Epic account can be connected to a console account while each service continues to display the identity it owns. Epic controls the name used in its launcher, forum, AnswerHub, PC, Mac, mobile, and Switch experiences. PlayStation controls the Online ID shown in PlayStation-managed areas, and Xbox controls the gamertag shown in Xbox-managed areas.
That split explains questions such as “Why is my Epic name different on console?” or “Will changing my Fortnite name change my PSN name?” The answer depends on which label you are looking at. An Epic name change updates Epic-controlled labels; it does not rename a platform profile.
Before you start
Use the Epic account connected to your game
Open Epic’s website and sign in to the account linked to the game profile you want to rename. Signing in to a different Epic account will edit that account’s name, not the profile you see on your console. If you are unsure which account is connected, use the console sign-in option rather than guessing at an email address.
Have access to the account email
Epic lists a verified email address as a prerequisite. If the account email is unverified, complete verification first, then return to Account settings. The rename control may not work until verification is complete. Use the address already associated with the Epic account; changing account details unnecessarily can make recovery more difficult.
Check the two-week limit
Epic permits a display-name change once every two weeks. If you changed the name recently, the field can be locked until the waiting period expires. The page can show the last-change date through the information icon beside the display-name field. Treat the displayed date as the useful reference rather than repeatedly submitting the form.
Do not unlink your console
Unlinking a PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo account is not a rename step. Epic warns that unlinking can affect access to game data associated with the account. Leave the connection intact while changing the Epic display name. The linked-account process is for replacing a connected console account, not for refreshing a name.

- Open Epic Games’ website. Use a browser and select Sign in.
- Sign in to the linked Epic account. Choose the normal Epic login if you have one. If you have only played through a console and never completed an Epic account, choose the sign-in option for that console.
- Complete account setup if prompted. Console-only players may see Finish Setting Up Your Account. Follow that prompt before trying to edit the name. Epic’s guidance for this situation is covered in its account-linking help flow.
- Open Account settings. From the signed-in account menu, go to Account settings.
- Confirm email verification. If Epic indicates that the email is not verified, use the verification message sent to the account address and then reload Account settings.
- Find Display name. Enter the new name in the Display name box. This is the Epic identity, not your PSN ID or Xbox gamertag.
- Select Continue. Submit the change using the Continue button. If Epic accepts the name, the account settings page should show the new display name.
- Allow the new name to appear across services. Sign out and back in to the Epic Games Launcher or restart the game if an old name remains visible temporarily. A brief delay does not mean that the console account was renamed.

What the two-week cooldown means
The limit is one Epic display-name change every two weeks. It is a rule on the Epic account, not a limit on how often you can change a PSN ID or Xbox gamertag through those companies’ own systems. If you changed your Epic name on a Monday, the Display name control may remain unavailable until the corresponding date two weeks later.
When the field is locked, look for the information icon beside it and hover over the icon. Epic says the page can show when the last change occurred. Save that date before closing the page so you know when to try again. Repeatedly editing the field, signing in through another platform, or unlinking a console does not turn the control into an available one.
What happens on PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch?
PlayStation
Your PlayStation Online ID remains unchanged when you edit the Epic display name. A PlayStation player may therefore see the PSN identity in console-specific areas while Epic services use the new Epic name. If the objective is to rename the PlayStation identity itself, use PlayStation’s own account process; changing Epic settings cannot perform that operation.

Your Xbox gamertag remains unchanged. This is why a Fortnite or other Epic game name can look different on Xbox than on PC or Switch. To change the Xbox identity, use Microsoft/Xbox account controls rather than the Epic Account settings page.
Nintendo Switch
Nintendo is the exception among the consoles covered here: Epic’s locator says Switch uses the Epic Games display name. Editing the Epic display name therefore changes the name associated with Epic play on Switch, subject to normal synchronization time.
Cross-platform friends and parties
Friends may see the Epic display name in Epic-managed interfaces and the platform name in console-managed interfaces. A mismatch is expected and does not by itself indicate that accounts are incorrectly linked. Check which service owns the screen before attempting any account change.
If the Display name box is locked
A locked field usually means the two-week cooldown has not ended. Hover over the information icon next to the field to see when the last change occurred, then wait until that date has passed. Creating another Epic account or unlinking the console will not bypass the timer and can create a separate account or jeopardize access to existing game data.

Common problems and safe fixes
The email is not verified
Epic requires email verification for the rename. Check the inbox associated with the Epic account, including spam or filtered folders, and complete the verification link. Return to Account settings after verification status updates. Do not change the email address merely to make the display-name control available; that can affect account recovery.
I only have a console login
Go to Epic’s website, choose the sign-in button for the console you use, and authenticate with that platform. If Epic shows Finish Setting Up Your Account, complete it. A console login can represent an Epic account that was created automatically during first use but never received a full Epic email and password. Until setup is finished, the normal account-settings controls may not be available.
I signed in but see the wrong display name
Sign out and retry with the console sign-in option or the email belonging to the game profile you intend to edit. Editing the name while signed in to a second Epic account will not rename the first one. Confirm the account identity in Account settings before submitting a change.

Epic says synchronization can take time when a console display name changes. That delay is separate from changing the Epic display name. Wait for the linked-account page to refresh rather than unlinking and relinking immediately.

Those instructions are for replacing a linked console account, not for renaming the Epic account. Unlinking can affect access to game data, so treat it as an account-recovery or account-migration decision, not a display-name fix.
The name is rejected
Epic applies rules to display names, and the exact acceptance criteria can change. A rejected name may contain restricted wording, use characters the current form does not accept, or conflict with account-specific limits. Try a different name that follows the rules shown by Epic at the time of the attempt. Do not assume that a name accepted on one platform is guaranteed to be accepted by Epic.
The account belongs to a child
Epic’s Cabined Accounts can have different features and restrictions. If the account is a child account or has limited permissions, the display-name option may be unavailable or governed by additional controls. Follow the account’s on-screen guidance and Epic’s current Cabined Account and display-name rules rather than attempting to bypass the restriction.

How to verify that only the Epic name changed
- Return to Epic Account settings and confirm the new value in Display name.
- Open the Epic Games Launcher or an Epic game on PC, Mac, or mobile and check the account label.
- If you use Switch, check the Epic-managed player identity there after allowing time for synchronization.
- On PlayStation, check the PSN profile name; on Xbox, check the gamertag. Those values should be exactly as they were before the Epic edit.
If the console identity changed unexpectedly, you changed it through the console provider rather than through Epic, or you are viewing a platform-specific label. When you actually need to change a console username
Use Epic Account settings when you want to change the identity used by Epic services, PC/Mac/mobile play, or Switch. Use PlayStation’s account controls when you want a new PSN Online ID. Use Xbox/Microsoft account controls when you want a new Xbox gamertag. These are separate operations, with separate platform policies, availability, and possible effects.
Changing a console name is therefore not a workaround for the Epic two-week cooldown. Likewise, changing the Epic name will not rename the console profile that other players see in platform-owned menus.

Can a console-only player change the display name?
