A child can change an Epic Games display name only after the account is no longer restricted as a Cabined Account. A parent or guardian must complete Epic’s consent and account-setup process, the account email must be verified, and Epic must not be enforcing its two-week name-change cooldown. Once those conditions are met, sign in to the child’s Epic Account, open Account Settings, enter a name in the Display name box, and select Continue. This changes the Epic identity used by Fortnite and other Epic services; it does not rename a PlayStation Network account or Xbox profile.
First, identify which name you are trying to change
“Epic Games name” can mean different things depending on where the child is playing. The Epic display name belongs to the child’s Epic Games Account. It appears in the Epic Games Launcher, Epic’s forum and AnswerHub, and Epic games played on PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch, or mobile. Fortnite on one of those platforms can therefore show the Epic display name.
PlayStation and Xbox add a separate identity layer. A PlayStation Network online ID or an Xbox Gamertag can continue to appear on that console even after the Epic display name changes. If the name looks unchanged on a console, check which identity the screen is displaying before attempting another Epic account change.

The rest of this guide concerns the Epic display name. It applies to questions such as “How do I change my child’s Fortnite name?” when Fortnite is using the Epic account name rather than a console-specific identity.

Why a child account may not have a usable Display name box
Cabined Account restriction
Epic may place a child’s account into a Cabined Account when the required parent or guardian has not completed account setup. Cabined Accounts have selected features disabled, and choosing a custom display name is one of the restricted features. The child cannot work around that restriction by entering a different name in Fortnite or by changing a console profile.
Fully set-up account
After the parent or guardian provides the required consent and finishes Epic’s setup process, the account can become eligible for features that were unavailable while it was Cabined. The name field is available only when the account has reached that eligible state. Consent is an account-status requirement, not a one-time code that the child can enter into the name field.
Other eligibility checks
Even an account with completed consent must use a verified email address for Epic’s standard display-name workflow. A recent previous change can also temporarily disable editing. These conditions are independent: completing parental consent does not remove a two-week cooldown, and waiting two weeks does not unlock a Cabined Account.

Complete parental consent and account setup
If the account is Cabined, the parent or guardian must use Epic’s consent process associated with that child account. The exact screens can vary by account state and region, but the objective is the same: the adult confirms the relationship and completes the account setup that Epic requires before custom display names become available.
- Sign in using the child’s Epic Account details. Confirm that this is the account linked to the child’s Fortnite progress. Starting with a different Epic account will not change the restricted account.
- Follow the parent-or-guardian consent request. Use the adult’s contact information and complete the requested verification steps. Keep the child’s account and the consenting adult’s details associated with the same setup flow.
- Finish every account-setup screen. Consent by itself may not be enough if Epic still shows an incomplete setup task. Continue until the account portal no longer presents the pending setup request.
- Sign out and sign back in. A fresh session makes it easier for the account portal and game services to load the account’s new eligibility state.
If no consent request is visible, check that the adult is working from the correct child account and that the account’s birth-date information is accurate. Do not create a second account merely to obtain a custom name; that can separate the child from existing purchases, progress, and entitlements.

Verify the email address before trying to rename the account
Epic’s normal display-name change flow requires the account email to be verified. Look for Epic’s verification message in the mailbox associated with the account and complete its verification action. If it is missing, check spam or junk folders, confirm that the mailbox is accessible, and request another verification message from the account portal if Epic offers that option.
After verification, return to the account portal rather than relying only on an already-open Fortnite session. The account settings page is the place where Epic evaluates the email and cooldown requirements and exposes the editable field.
Change the Epic display name in Account Settings
Use this sequence once consent and email verification are complete:
- Open Epic Account Settings. Sign in to the child’s Epic Games Account in a browser. Make sure the account identifier matches the one used for Fortnite.
- Find the Display name field. The current Epic display name appears in the account settings area. If the field is unavailable or shows a lock, stop and use the eligibility checks in the next section instead of repeatedly submitting the form.
- Enter the desired name. Type the new display name exactly as the child wants it to appear. Because the name is publicly available, avoid a real name, school name, location, birth year, phone number, or other identifying detail.
- Select Continue. Submit the change using the button shown beside the field. If Epic accepts it, the account settings page should show the new display name.
- Refresh the services that still show the old value. Sign out and back in to the Epic Games Launcher or restart the game if a cached name remains visible. A console may still show its own online ID by design.
Epic permits a display-name change once every two weeks. The interval applies between successful changes, so changing a name and immediately deciding to change it again will normally require waiting.
What a lock icon means and how to check the cooldown
A lock icon beside the Display name field generally indicates that editing is temporarily unavailable. Hover over the information icon next to the field to see when the previous change occurred. Use that date to calculate when the two-week interval ends.

If the last change was recent
Wait until the full two-week interval has elapsed, then sign in again and check the field. Reinstalling Fortnite, changing a console profile, or entering the parental-controls PIN will not shorten the Epic cooldown.
If the account has never been renamed
A locked field on an account that has not recently changed names points to another eligibility issue, most commonly Cabined status, unfinished consent/setup, or an unverified email. Confirm each item in that order. The lock is not evidence that the child needs a different Fortnite installation.
If the date appears inconsistent
Check that you are signed into the same Epic Account used for the previous change. Families sometimes have several accounts sharing one household email address or console. The cooldown belongs to the Epic Account, not to the device and not to every child in the household.
Parental controls do not directly edit the display name
Epic’s parental-controls area is a permissions and availability layer, not a separate name editor. To open it, sign in to the Epic Account Portal, choose PARENTAL CONTROLS, and enter the six-digit parental-controls PIN when prompted.
Those controls can determine which options are available to a child, but the display-name change itself is performed in Account Settings after the account is eligible. Entering the PIN does not override a Cabined Account, verify an email address, or bypass the two-week interval. If the child can access parental controls but the Display name box remains locked, use the account-status and cooldown checks rather than looking for a name field inside the controls page.

Choose a name that will remain acceptable
Epic’s Terms describe the display name as publicly available. Epic may change a name that is offensive or misleading, violates its Community Rules, or infringes another person’s rights. A name that passes the form today can still be changed later if it breaches those rules.
For a child, a fictional word, game-related phrase, or non-identifying nickname is safer than a real name. Avoid combining a first name with a school, town, team, age, or year of birth. Do not use another person’s identity, an official-sounding title that could mislead others, or wording intended to evade moderation.

Common mistakes that prevent a successful change
Trying to edit the name from Fortnite
The game’s profile screens may display the current identity, but the standard change is made through Epic Account Settings. If the account is eligible, use the browser-based settings workflow rather than searching the game menus for a hidden editor.
Using the adult’s Epic account
Parental consent does not transfer ownership of the child’s account to the adult. The display-name field must be changed while signed in to the child’s Epic Account. Changing the adult’s name leaves the child’s account untouched.
Assuming a console rename will solve an Epic-name problem
A PlayStation Network online ID or Xbox Gamertag is separate. Renaming that platform identity, where available, is a platform-account action and does not change the Epic display name shown in Epic’s own services.

Changing accounts to get around the cooldown
Using another account can strand the child’s progress and purchases on the original account. Wait for the interval attached to the correct account instead of moving the child to an unrelated profile.
Expected results after the change
Once Epic accepts the new value, the new display name becomes the public name associated with that Epic Games Account. It can appear in the Epic Games Launcher, Epic’s forum and AnswerHub, and Epic games on PC, Mac, Switch, or mobile. Different services may update at different times while an existing session is open, so a restart or fresh sign-in can be necessary.
The account’s Epic identity remains the same: the child’s progress, purchases, and account relationship are not replaced merely because the display name changed. The separate PlayStation or Xbox identity remains governed by that platform.
When to contact Epic support
Use Epic’s support channel when the account’s status remains contradictory after consent and email verification are complete—for example, the portal says setup is finished but still treats the account as Cabined, or the displayed cooldown date is clearly unrelated to the account’s history. Include the Epic Account identifier and describe the exact field, lock icon, or message shown. Do not send a password, parental-controls PIN, or other secret credential in a support request.
For a normal Cabined Account, an unverified email, or a genuine two-week cooldown, support cannot substitute for the required consent, verification, or waiting period. Resolve the applicable requirement first, then retry the Account Settings workflow.
