Use Change Appearance on your existing GTA Online character; do not delete or replace the character. Rockstar says you can change heritage, features, appearance and apparel through the Interaction Menu’s Style section for a fee, but it does not explicitly guarantee that every saved outfit type survives every appearance-editing scenario. Before you edit, note the saved outfits you care about; afterward, check your saved outfit slots in freemode.
If your main concern is whether changing appearance automatically deletes saved outfits, the careful answer is that the cited guidance does not establish either universal preservation or routine deletion. GTABase lists a separate Outfit selector with 20 saved custom outfit slots, but that is not a promise about how every outfit behaves during an appearance edit. Treat the edit and the saved-outfit check as two separate tasks.

What changing appearance does—and what it does not do
Change Appearance is an edit to your existing character, not a character reset. Rockstar Games Customer Support says heritage, features, appearance and apparel can be changed for a fee through the Interaction Menu’s Style section. Rockstar also says a character’s gender cannot be changed after the initial character-creation process. The official guidance is for the PS4, Xbox One and PC versions named in its April 20, 2024 update. Rockstar’s appearance and gender guidance.

Saved outfits are a separate concern. A current Interaction Menu guide lists an Outfit selector and 20 saved custom outfit slots, but the guidance does not expressly promise that every saved outfit—including unusual or special outfits—will persist through every appearance edit on every platform or version. That evidence does not establish that outfits are routinely deleted, either. The practical approach is to record the outfits you want to keep, use Change Appearance rather than character deletion, and verify the slots afterward.
As of its January 24, 2026 update, GTABase lists the Change Appearance fee as GTA$100,000 and the Outfit selector as holding 20 saved custom outfits. Rockstar confirms that there is a fee but does not state the amount in its support article. Treat the amount and slot count as guide-reported menu details, not as a guarantee that every edition or later update will show identical values. GTABase’s Interaction Menu guide.
In short, the supported route is an in-game menu option with a fee. It is not a documented outfit backup, restoration or transfer feature. If the outfits matter to you, make a reference before the edit and inspect the relevant slots afterward rather than relying on assumptions about what the game will retain.

Before you open Change Appearance
Take a moment to identify the outfits you would be disappointed to lose. This is a precaution, not a Rockstar-required backup procedure, and recording an outfit does not itself save or protect its in-game slot. The point is to give yourself a reference for checking what is present after the edit—and, if necessary, for deciding whether to recreate a combination.
- Note the saved outfit names. A list of names may be enough if each name clearly identifies the look. If it will not help you remember the combination, capture or write down the clothing pieces and accessories as well.
- Record the slot as well as the name. If you use several saved outfits, note which slot contains each one. That makes it easier to check the entries you care about instead of relying on memory.
- Include unusual or special looks in your notes. The available guidance does not establish how every special or unusual outfit behaves during an appearance edit, or whether all such combinations can be rebuilt through ordinary apparel choices. Do not treat a screenshot or written list as a guarantee of recovery.
- Check that you are editing the intended character. Change Appearance applies to the existing character you select; it is not a way to transfer outfits to another character. If you are unsure which character is active, stop and confirm before proceeding.
- Be prepared for the fee shown by the game. GTABase listed GTA$100,000 in January 2026, while Rockstar’s support article only confirms that a fee applies. The in-game amount shown when you reach the confirmation stage is the relevant figure for your current version.
- Know the limit of the edit. If your goal is to change gender, do not pay expecting Change Appearance to do it. Rockstar says gender cannot be changed after the original character-creation process.
This preparation gives you a comparison point. It does not export outfit data, create a backup, reserve a slot or enable automatic restoration. Neither Rockstar’s appearance guidance nor the current menu guide describes an outfit backup or restore procedure tied to changing appearance.
It is also useful to decide whether you are ready to make the change before opening the confirmation screen. Rockstar says the attributes can be edited “at any time,” but that does not mean the edit is free. Review the displayed fee, the character selected and the change you intend to make before confirming. If any of those details are unclear, back out and resolve the uncertainty rather than treating character deletion or replacement as an alternative.

How to change your character’s appearance
- Open the Interaction Menu. GTABase’s January 24, 2026 guide lists M on PC, holding the touchpad on PS4 and PS5, and holding View on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Controls can vary with platform, configuration or game updates; use the control mapped to the Interaction Menu if these inputs do not work. These are menu-opening controls, not separate appearance-editing commands.
- Go to the appearance controls. Rockstar’s support article places the feature in the Interaction Menu’s Style section. GTABase lists Change Appearance under Appearance. Since the two descriptions use different labels, look in the Style/Appearance area rather than assuming the wording must match exactly. If you cannot identify the option, do not choose a character-management or deletion action as a substitute.
- Select Change Appearance for the character you mean to edit. Confirm that the selection is the appearance-editing option for the current character. Rockstar describes it as the route for changing that existing character’s heritage, features, appearance and apparel. It is not a route to create a new character, replace the selected one or alter gender.
- Review the fee displayed by the game before confirming. Rockstar confirms that the change costs a fee; GTABase reported GTA$100,000 in its January 2026 menu guide. The official support article does not give a price. If your screen shows a different amount, use the displayed amount as the cost applicable to your version rather than assuming the guide figure is universal.
- Make the changes you want and complete the in-game confirmation. The attributes Rockstar identifies as changeable are heritage, features, appearance and apparel. Make sure the change you want falls within that scope. Do not expect this process to change gender: Rockstar explicitly says there is no way to change gender after initial character creation.
- Return to freemode and check saved outfits. Open the Interaction Menu, go to Appearance > Outfit as listed in GTABase’s guide, and inspect the saved custom outfit slots you noted. GTABase describes 20 custom outfit slots. Verify the actual entries that matter to you rather than assuming that an unchanged name means the full combination is unchanged.
The controls and labels above come from GTABase’s guide updated January 24, 2026, while Rockstar’s appearance article was last updated April 20, 2024. If your game presents different controls or labels, follow the options shown in your current version and make sure you have selected Change Appearance—not an action that creates or deletes a character. Do not confirm an option solely because its name resembles the one in a guide.
The flow can be thought of as two checks around one paid edit: first confirm the existing character and fee, then confirm the saved outfit entries afterward. The pre-edit notes are for your own reference; they do not change what the game saves. The post-edit check is a precaution because neither cited source gives a blanket persistence guarantee across every outfit category, platform or version.
What to check after the edit
Once you are back in freemode, verify the slots that matter instead of assuming that the character edit either preserved or erased everything. GTABase describes an Outfit selector with 20 custom outfit slots; check the relevant saved entries and, where useful, compare them with the notes or screenshots you made before editing.
- Confirm the outfit names and combinations. A name appearing in a slot is not necessarily enough to confirm that the combination is unchanged; inspect the actual saved outfit. Compare the clothing and accessories with your reference if you made one.
- Check more than one slot if you use several. The 20-slot figure is GTABase’s guide-reported menu detail, not a Rockstar guarantee about persistence. Look at each saved entry you specifically wanted to retain.
- Distinguish the character’s current look from the saved entries. A change to the character’s appearance and the saved custom outfit selector are separate menu concerns. Use the selector to check the saved entries rather than judging only from the character’s current look.
- Use your records as a rebuild reference if needed. The cited guidance does not specify an automatic restore option or establish that every special or unusual outfit can be recreated through ordinary apparel choices. Notes can help you identify what you had, but they cannot guarantee that every item remains available.
- Do not infer a universal rule from one slot. Checking a single outfit tells you about that entry, not necessarily every saved outfit category or every platform/version scenario. The available official guidance does not provide that broader persistence rule.
If an entry is missing or looks different, the sources cited here do not provide a guaranteed recovery procedure. Your record may help you decide whether to recreate the outfit, but avoid assuming that another appearance edit, deletion or character replacement will restore it. The purpose of the check is to understand the state of the saved entries on your character, not to prove that every outcome has a known fix.
Also keep the menu figure in perspective: GTABase’s 20-slot description is useful for finding and reviewing the custom outfit selector, but it does not answer whether every unusual outfit is included in the same way or whether all saved outfits persist after every appearance edit. A slot count is not a preservation guarantee.
Change Appearance is not character deletion
Do not delete a character to make an ordinary appearance change. Rockstar documents character deletion as a separate operation with its own platform- and version-specific instructions. Its guide distinguishes PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced from PS4, Xbox One and PC Legacy, and the deletion flow requires a permanent confirmation by entering delete. That is a destructive character-management action, not the appearance editor. Rockstar’s character deletion instructions.

| Action | What it does | Why it matters for this task |
|---|---|---|
| Change Appearance | Edits heritage, features, appearance and apparel on the existing character for a fee. | Use this for an appearance edit; it does not change gender after character creation. |
| Delete character | Permanently removes the selected character after a confirmation flow. | It is a separate destructive operation, not a shortcut for appearance editing. |
The distinction is especially important if you are searching for a way to change a character’s face or look while keeping saved outfits. The supported route is to edit the existing character through Change Appearance, then inspect the outfits. Deletion is documented as a different operation, with a permanent confirmation step. It should not be used as an experiment, a reset button or a workaround for an outfit concern.
Rockstar’s deletion instructions are divided by platform/version: the guide provides separate paths for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced, and for PS4, Xbox One and PC Legacy. Those divisions concern the deletion interface, not extra methods for appearance editing. If you are merely trying to change heritage, features, appearance or apparel, stay in the Style/Appearance area and do not enter the deletion flow.
If the menu or fee looks different
The menu labels and control inputs cited here come from GTABase’s guide, updated January 24, 2026, while Rockstar’s official appearance guidance was updated April 20, 2024. Menus and fees can be affected by game updates or edition differences. Use the options and fee shown in your game, and do not proceed if you cannot tell whether you are selecting an appearance edit or a character-management action.

- You cannot find Change Appearance under the listed submenu: check the Style/Appearance area, since Rockstar and GTABase describe the location with different labels. Menu wording can vary; the action you want is still Change Appearance.
- The displayed fee differs from GTA$100,000: treat the displayed in-game amount as applicable to your current version; the GTA$100,000 figure is what GTABase reported in January 2026. Rockstar’s official article confirms a fee without specifying its amount.
- You are being asked to delete or replace a character: back out. Those actions are distinct from Change Appearance, and Rockstar’s deletion flow is permanent after its confirmation step.
- A saved outfit is missing after the edit: check the Outfit selector slots you recorded. The cited sources do not document a universal recovery method, so avoid assuming that deletion, another appearance edit or creating a replacement character will restore it.
- You want to change gender: do not continue expecting the appearance editor to do that. Rockstar’s April 20, 2024 answer says gender cannot be changed after the initial character-creation process.
These checks are meant to prevent a mismatch between an older menu guide and the controls or labels you see, not to suggest that every difference signals a problem. The current in-game menu is the relevant place to confirm the fee and the option selected. If you are uncertain whether the screen is an appearance edit or a deletion/character-management action, stop rather than confirm.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Limits of what is confirmed about saved outfits
Rockstar’s appearance article confirms which character attributes can be edited, the Interaction Menu route and the existence of a fee. GTABase supplies the control inputs, a reported GTA$100,000 fee and a 20-slot custom outfit selector. Neither source explicitly guarantees persistence for every saved outfit category or every special outfit after every appearance edit. Accordingly, the safest guidance is to use the existing character’s Change Appearance option, keep a personal record of valued saved combinations, and verify the relevant slots afterward—not to promise either universal preservation or inevitable outfit loss.
This is why the title’s practical advice is not “outfits are always safe” or “changing appearance deletes them.” The sources support the editing route and a separate outfit selector, but they do not state a universal outcome for every combination and version. If preserving a particular look matters, the prudent order is: document it, edit the existing character, then inspect the saved entry in freemode. That is a cautious procedure rather than a guarantee from Rockstar.
